Defibrillator Training

Are you trained in the use of the defibrillator? Do you need to complete your refresher course? If yes, then you are asked to leave you name in with Martina or Bridgie O’Brien in the Corner Shop and a refresher course will be arranged.

Do you want to be trained in the use of the defibrillator? It is one of the most vital and worthwhile training you can have. If you are interested in being trained in the use of a defibrillator you are asked to leave your name in with Martina or Bridgie O’Brien in the shop. There is always a need for more people to take this course and your support will be vital.

Urgent Need for Road Work

Throughout the winter and right up to the present day a fall of rain brings its own share of troubles to John and Jacqui Rooney and their family in Rathcline. To those of you that know the layout and positioning of the road and their house you can appreciate their plight. The rain water flows down from the hill of Carraroe and indeed it is joined with a flow coming out of the graveyard road also. The water then lodges outside of their house with some of it flowing and lodging in their garden. The water on the road at this point can be up to eight inches deep and with a large volume of traffic using this road on a daily business it is impossible for any family member to be in the front area of the house such is the splash right up to their front door.

Remedial work was done some time back but this has not alleviated the problem – perhaps another look at this problem will identify and rectify this problem.

A further problem is that on one side of the road there is a drop into a channel that is totally hidden when the water is on the road and unless great care is taken when meeting another car there is a danger of one of the cars going into this channel and casing damage and injury and meeting lorries or school bus makes it all the more dangerous.

Hopefully the necessary work will soon take place to relieve this problem spot and leave it safe for the family and drivers alike.

The Rathcline ladies had a wonderful successful year last year and this year promises to be equally as good, if not better. The club is riding on a crest of a wave with so many of their panels playing leading and significant roles on the hugely successful county senior and Under 14 teams.
Already two teams are in place and we hope that you will come and join in and it is hoped that there will be five teams.

Fermoyle NS Success

The FAI blitz noted last week proved to be a great success for Fermoyle National School who came away as North Leinster champions. They now qualify for the final that will include two Dublin sides and the south Leinster champions and we wish them the very best of luck. The panel representing the school is Cronan Flood, Cillian Flood, Odhran Wyse, Oran Kenny, Connell Kennelly, Kian Gilmore, Daniel Curran and Luke Lisle.

All Lay Ministers from the parish of Rathcline are invited to the Longford Arms Hotel on Wednesday 30yh May from 7.30pm to 9.30pm for an evening of input and discussion on the topic Lay Ministry in the Church. It is hoped that all lay ministers will attend.

Lough Ree Athletic Club

The Roscommon County Championships for the U12 and upwards took place on Thursday last 8th May at Athlone IT. . An evening meeting is never a great idea, particularly if the competitors are attending school all day. This was reflected by the numbers taking part. The county champions for 2012 are Orla Keane U12 60m, Clodagh Kiely U13 Shot, Ronan English U13 Shot, Owen Murray U14 80m, Long Jump and Shot, Anna Peters 100m and Long Jump, Stephen O’ Dowd U15 Shot and Conor English U16 Shot.

Silver medallists were Orla Keane U12 600m, Cronan Flood U13 600m, Radek Pawdoski U14 Shot, Anna Peters U15 Shot, Cian Donoghoe U15 Long Jump and Shot, Conor English U16 80m, 800m and Long Jump, Enda Berga U17 100m and Clodagh Kiely U13 Long Jump.

Bronze medallists were Eanna Donoghoe U13 600m and Long Jump, Cian Donoghoe U15 800m and Iarla O’Sullivan U15 Shot

Well done to all who took part, particularly as the conditions were far from ideal. Spare a thought for Rebecca and Patricia, classmates, who waited patiently for the Under12 Ball Throw to take place, where they would have given a good account of themselves. Due to the inclement weather darkness came down too soon. Enda Berga was also in the same boat as she waited for the Javelin to take place.

Stephen O’Dowd was an impressive newcomer and some of the squad should consider the combined events competition in the future. The club looks forward to the Connaught Finals in Galway in the near future and of course the parish Community Games.

Well done: On Sunday May 6th, a gang of 24 members of Lanesboro Tri Club headed in convoy to take on the Boyle Charity Duathlon. Standing out from the crowd, decked out in the new club colours, Lanesboro Tri Club were a talking point among many an athlete and spectator!! A mix of abilities turned up for the duathlon, 5k run- 20k cycle – 2.5k run, from those taking part in their first duathlon to those returning to set new personal bests - all putting in brilliant performances. The sun shone brightly, rain stayed away and all in all everyone had a great day. Big congrats to Graham O’Brien and Colm Daly who both took home first place in their respective categories, and to Sean and Siobhan Mimnagh who picked up the couples prize. Congrats also to Seán Farrell and Marie Mc Loughlin, first male and female home for the club. Thanks to James Gallagher and Oonagh Casey for the snaps of the event.

The opening jackpot starts off at €600, and if the jackpot is not won in a particular draw €100 will be added to the pool the following week. For each week that the jackpot is not won, 4 members of the subscription list will receive €25 each. The annual subscription fee for the Lotto is €100, and is payable by either standing order, a full year cash payment or bi-yearly cash payments of €50. Participants who choose to pay the full year cash payment will be included in a draw for a weekend away to the value of €200. All preliminary proceeds will go towards repaying annual repayments with the Credit Union loan deal, and any surplus will be spent on the day to day running of the club and the development of Clonbonny. The club are very grateful towards everybody who has supported the club in the past, and hope to continue to receive that extraordinary level of support.

Golfing Society

We had our first Golfer of year competition on Friday, 4th May at Roscommon Golf Course.

A very enjoyable was had by all members who took part on this our first outing with our new captain, Liam Rosemond.

Indeed Liam had a good day all round as his fine score of 37 stableford points was sufficient to win the first prize.

Roscommon Golf course was in good nick and thanks to the committee for the good condition of the course.

The catering staff is to be congratulated also for the lovely tasty fare on offer after the game.

John James O Shea also had 37 points but he was pipped into 2nd place as Liam’s 18 points on back nine beat John James’ 17!

3rd prize was won by Tommy Reilly with 34 points. The first nine was won by our new treasurer, Colm Dardis with 19 points and the back nine was won by Peter Day also on 19 points.

Shannon Gaels

Despite a great performance the Under 16 team went down to Colmcille in a great final in Ballinalee last week. Well done to the lads and we hope that they can make amends in the championship. The minors continue to train every Thursday evening in Clonbonny. The Under14 team play this Thursday evening. The next game for the under 13 team is at the end of the month.
15 Years of Eucharistic Adoration

In celebration of this treasure in the Parish of Rathcline and in preparation for the Eucharistic Congress in June, we will have a special hour of prayer reflection finishing with Benediction on Monday 28th may from 7 to 8pm.

Lanesboro Community Games

At the County Swimming, in the individual events, Dúileach Ryan and Con Casserly got gold medals and will represent Longford In the U-10 and U14 Freestyle races in Athlone in Summer. Séadhna Ryan came a very close second in the U-12 breaststroke while Aisling Farrell and Orla Ryan swam very well to get silver medals in the u-12 Breaststroke and backstroke and Aimee Chalmers picked up a silver medal in the U-8 freestyle. In the other individual events, the children gained great experience that they put to good use in the relays. The Girls relay team of Rosin Brennan, Hazel Johnson, Orla Ryan, Aisling Farrell, and Jane Dowd brought home anU-13 silver medal. In the U-13 boy’s relay race, while the winner in this race was a foregone conclusion, Lanesboro were neck and neck with Longford North team for silver and bronze medals. Dúileach Ryan gave Lanesboro the early edge, Phillip Chalmers and Evan Chalmers swam out of their skins to keep Lanesboro in touch for Séadhna Ryan to finish off and secure the silver medal. All the children were very happy to be going home with their medals. See Picture below.

Finally, remember Lanesboro Community Games will be holding the area athletics competition on Sunday 20th May at 5.30pm. Up to 42 children will be needed to represent Lanesboro in the Athletics County Finals and hope the same will be the case this year. There are many events from sprint to distance running, and also many field events. We hope every child in the parish will come along.

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Longford Ladies on the Up Congratulations to Longford Ladies Senior Football team who on Sunday last in Tullamore came from behind to beat a strong Limerick team in the Bord Gáis Energy League Final. It was a particularly great day for the ladies of the Rathcline Ladies club who had five of their players on the winning panel. All of our club ladies performed admirably and the day was made all the sweeter with the performance of our ladies and especially Claire Greene who was awarded Player of the Match. The five ladies representing our club on the panel were Claire Greene, Rathcline, Paula Kenny, Fermoyle, Sinead Farrell, Josephine Donlon, Clonfower and Lauren Farrell, Cashel. The good news does not end there with 4 of the 14 Ladies on the Longford panel that are playing Kilkenny in the Leinster Final.
Longford Ladies on the Up

Congratulations to Longford Ladies Senior Football team who on Sunday last in Tullamore came from behind to beat a strong Limerick team in the Bord Gáis Energy League Final.

This is a further acknowledgement of the progression in the club of Ladies football. Good luck to the girls and their teammates in the Leinster Final.

If you are interested in being trained in the use of a defibrillator you are asked to leave your name in with Martina or Bridgie in the shop. There is always a need for more people to take this course and your support will be vital.

Death

The entire area was saddened to learn of the death on Tuesday last 1st May at the Blackrock Clinic in Dublin of Mrs mary Dowling, Ballyleague. Mary was a native of Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath came to Ballyleague with her husband Brendan many years ago. Mary was a nurse by profession and served as a district nurse in Roscommon. Her beaming smile and warmth of welcome told the personality of Mary and she brought kindness, hope and may laughs to her patients as she cared for them. Her legacy will be long remembered by the many families that she called to during the course of her duty. Mary was also a great and keen Bridge player and was a popular figure at the bridge games locally. Fourteen years ago Mary was diagnosed with cancer and as was the way and will of Mary she did not let it disrupt her way of life. She dealt with her cross with the courage and strength that she gave to patients in previous years and with an enthusiasm that defied belief. Mary was an example and strength to everyone. Her remains reposed at Farrell’s funeral Home on Thursday before being removed to The Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. Following her Funeral Mass on Friday her remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery. To her husband Brendan, daughters Breda and Ciara, sisters Peg, Kathleen and Rose, brother Joseph, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

There was great anticipation over the past two weeks as to the identity of the winner of the coveted President’s Prize presented by club President Mona O’Flaherty. The winner turned out to be a very popular figure in Una Lawlor. Runner-up was Katharine Harrison; third place was taken by Kathleen Hanley. The first session winner was Bernadette Gillen and the second session winner was Phil Chalmers. The club would like to show its appreciation to the two organisers, Gemma Douglas and Cyril Hussey who did a wonderful job.

One of our most recent arrivals to the parish passed away last week. Mickie Comerford, 1 Longford Road, a native of Tipperary, many years ago came to work with Lyons Meat Company in Longford. He had lived in Killashee for many years before recently arriving in Lanesboro where he became a popular figure. Mickie, like most Tipperary people had a keen interest and love of hurling. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Mickie’s remains were laid to rest in Clonbonny following his Funeral Mass in Killashee Church.

The late time has been set to accommodate those attending Longford’s opening game in the GAA championship. Last year we had 42 children represent Lanesboro in the Athletics County Finals and hope the same will be the case this year. There are many evens from sprint to distance running, and also many field events. We hope every child in the parish will come along.

Best of luck to our swimmers who will be taking part in the County Finals next Sunday 13th May. All the swimmers are young so this will be for fun and participation. We hope all the children will enjoy what will be a very new experience for most of them. The group are: Con Casserly, Philip Chalmers, Mark Dowd, Evan Chalmers, Séadhna Ryan, Brian Casey and Dúileach Ryan, Orla Ryan, Aisling Farrell, Róisin Brennan, Hazel Johnson and Jane Dowd.

Death

It was great sadness we learned of the death at Roscommon County Hospital on Tuesday 17th April following a short of illness of Theresa Barlow, Cloontuskert. Theresa was a gentle lady with a warm and kind nature. She was a nurse by profession and retired home a number of years back. The nature of the lady endeared her to everyone that she became acquainted with and indeed it made her highly thought of by her patients. Her warm friendly and welcoming smile will live with us all and it will be sadly missed as we travel the road and pass her Cloontuskert home. Her remains reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home, Roscommon before her removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. Following her Funeral Mass burial took place in her native Cloontuskert. To her sister Sr. Anthony, Callan, Co. Kilkenny, nehews, nieces, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Boro Celtic wins Cup Final

Not since 1999 has Boro Celtic taken home silverware of any kind despite many close losses but the team travelled with great confidence to Mullingar on Saturday last for the final of the Combined Counties Division Cup Final. This competition pits all the Saturday teams from all the other counties against each other and a victory in this competition would rank as the greatest victory in the history of the club. The final took take place in the Mullingar Town grounds, Dalton Park, Mullingar on Saturday last28th April. A great number travelled to Mullingar to support the Boro players and their support was well rewarded by a wonderful performance by a very determined Boro side. Boro were quick out of the blocks from the very start and after two minutes Henry Kenny struck to put them one nil ahead. They maintained the lead until the hour mark when Camlin Utd got back into the game when they scored to make the scoreline 1-1. It was pressure time for Boro and they rose to the occasion and with about 10 minutes to go Henry Kenny struck his and Boro’s second goal, a goal that proved to be the deciding score. This victory was great credit to the Boro Celtic but mostly to two men that have given so much time and energy to the team and the club, team manager Aaron Wyse and assistant manager Jeaffrey Mc Gann. We congratulate the two lads and the team on this wonderful victory.

Tidy Towns Clean Up
Starting Friday 27th April 2012 and continuing on the last Friday of each month for the summer in an effort to enhance the town and the environ. Death
The entire area was saddened and shocked when they learned of the death last Tuesday 10th April of one of our most loved residents Patsy Horohoe, Salmons Lane. Patsy was one of a kind whose mould was thrown away. For almost 15 years Patsy had been in ill health but did that stop him from doing and achieving- absolutely not. His outlook on life was remarkable and he carried his very heavy cross as though it was a feather. He was an example for us all. His outlook was always bright and cheerful; the lasting memory he left us was that even the darkest day has an amazing amount of sunshine and that is what we should cling to. Patsy was a remarkable tradesman gifted in so many ways. It is the mark of the man and the impression he made on us all that in death when we think of him we can only smile and remember his warm and beaming smile. The attendance at his residence where he reposed, at his removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague, on Friday and again at his Funeral Mass and burial in Cloontuskert cemetery on Saturday was one of the largest ever seen in the area. To his wife Geraldine, sons Mark, Paul, Alan and Brian, mother Josie, his brother Johnny, his sisters Tess and Kathleen, relatives and so many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Ballyleague N.S. Enrolment Day:
Parents of new entrants who wish to enrol their children for September 2012 are invited to visit the school on this Thursday April 19th at 2.15p.m. Parents, unable to attend on the day can phone the school, on 043-3321906 to make an alternative appointment. Please bring your child’s birth certificate and
St. John’s 150th Celebrations this weekend
Next weekend 20th to 22nd April is a red lettered weekend for the members of the St John’s congregation. Ash Disposal
The Ashman/woman cometh and the residents between the Strokestown Road junction and Ballyglass wish that whoever it is that is disposing of their ashes along that stretch would stop. It is a recent phenomenon that is blighting the residents along the road. Surely someone has seen or knows who is disposing of their ash on the road and creating such a mess especially when the weather is wet and if they could mention it to them to stop. Not only is it a mess when things are wet but it is also dangerous as it makes the road slicker, heightens the chance of a road accident and injury.
Thank You
The Irish Kidney Association would like to sincerely thank everyone that contributed to their collection on Saturday 7th April. The sum realised was €1213. The collection is run in conjunction with Organ Donor week.
Included in the pack were a group of enthusiastic Lanesboro Tri Club members, members of Shannonside Cycling Club and Athlone Tri Club and of course, the Harte family. After a briefing from the cycle’s organiser Matt Harte, the Garrycastle flag waved the cyclists off, as they began retracing the journey (approx. 120k), regularly taken by Matt’s father John (RIP), when he first came to Lanesboro. John Harte travelled to Lanesboro by bicycle, to find work with Bord na Mona. For a period of three years he made the journey back and forth, between Lanesboro and Easkey at weekends, cycling 70 miles on an old fixed gear bicycle, climbing the Curlew Mountains without the capability of changing gears. (While being challenged with many an uphill, some of the cyclists could only admire John’s stamina to do so without any of the high-tech bikes of today. Some were heard quoting the same complaint while searching for another gear going uphill, “I hate that feeling when you need to change gear again and find there isn’t another one!!”)
The first leg of the journey was from Lanesboro to Elphin (approx. 25k). After a quick refresher the group headed off for Collooney, via Boyle and the main N4 roadway (another approx. 50k), followed by a brief pit stop to refuel for the final trek to Easkey (approx. 35k) the original home place of John Harte. Having battled many a hill, along with the driving North West winds and rain, (with the help of a stash of power food, sweets and chocolate), the cyclists eventually reached their destination. Greeted with congratulatory applause, hot drinks were served to warm the bones of all. After spending the day in the saddle, laughing with the craic and banter among each other, puffing and panting while being faced with various challenges, the cyclists eventually made it to the hotel at Inishcrone (approx. 15k) to celebrate their achievement. A successful day was had by everyone! All this couldn’t have happened without the team, who organised it, under the guidance of Matt Harte, and also Lanesboro Tri Club’s group leaders, who encouraged and helped everyone along the way and not forgetting the support crew and Gardaí who assisted en route! Perhaps this could become an annual thing as there’s already talk of another club cycle and night away!
Many thanks to all who supported through sponsorship of the cyclists (Charities: I for Immunisation and Westmeath Hospice) and also to Oonagh Casey for her photos.
Girls U13 Cup Final: Ballyboro V Castlepollard. Final Score Abbeycarton was the venue for the ultimate glory for those strong enough for Cup Honours with the meeting of two great teams, Ballyboro & Castlepollard. Boro girls were in top form with a full squad lead by their team captain Marie Kelly. From kick-off Ballyboro showed full possession on the ball. Their strong mid-field players (Jillian Banahan, Rebecca Cox and Sarah Scally) consistently played the ball forward to Ellen Irwin. Castlepollard were playing a defensive game & at half-time the score was 0:0. Tensions were high & the second half started off with great determination from both sides. However, Ballyboro were not going to give into defeat easily. They pushed hard on Castlepollard’s defence and finally Ellen Irwin got the ball in the back of the Castlepollard net. Now 1:0 up, Ballyboro steamed ahead, with great defending by Aoife Mc Loughlin & Marie Kelly consistently keeping the ball out of danger. Ballyboro goalkeeper Hannah Shea had no worries. Great play was shown by Áine Halpin, Aisling Casey and Natasha Hegarty. Ballyboro were now in full control of this game, they continued to push hard on Castlepollard and a break in mid-field played, the ball to Sarah Scally who passed to Ellen Irwin and Ellen succeeded in getting goal number 2 for Ballyboro with 5 minutes from final whistle. Cup glory was for Ballyboro girls who deserved their Cup honours. It was a great match from these two teams with great play from both sides. Ballyboro honours were not to stop there – the Longford District schools girl Player of the League went to a Ballyboro player: Mid-Fielder Sarah Scally again bringing great glory to her club & team. The managers (Majella Kelly & Bernadette Scally) would like to thank their trainer John Tynan for all his commitment and hard work. Many thanks to all family and friends who travelled to Abbeycarton in support of these great girls.
Death
It was with a great sadness and shock we learned of the death at his residence on Monday 26th March of Kevin O’Dowd, Barnacor. Kevin was a proud native of Newtowncashel. He was a man who for many years was an employee of Longford County Council until his recent retirement. He had been in failing health for only a short time and he fought his battle in his own inimitable way with the great support of his family. Kevin was of farming stock and liked nothing better than maintaining and working the family farm. He had an abiding passion for horse racing especially Point to Points where he had the uncanny knack and gained tremendous satisfaction in spotting the next superstar, be it the horse or the jockey. Kevin’s popularity was clearly evident by the attendance visiting his home where he reposed until the removal of his remains on Tuesday and again at St. Mary’s Church following his removal. The attendance on Wednesday was both large and representative and following his Requiem Mass Kevin was laid to rest in his native Cashel Cemetery. Kevin’s passing will leave a great void in the hearts and minds of his wife Margaret, son Michael, Sorcha and grandson Traolach, daughters Marie and Deirdre, relatives and many friends to whom we extend our sincere and deepest sympathy.
Death
The area was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar on Monday 19th March of Brendan Carberry, Killinure. Brendan, from the well-known musical Carberry family from Derryhaun, his proficiency in a talented family was the Bodhran. Brendan with his wife Deirdre and children Kevin and Katie came to live in the parish a number of years ago. He was distinctive by his cap and full beard, he was a man who loved all things Irish and had an abiding love of the game of hurling, music and culture. He was a man of great kindness and gentleness who endeared himself to everyone that had the good fortune to know him. He was a renowned raconteur and could hold an audience in the palm of his hand. Brendan was a very familiar figure in the town and was much loved and his company always enjoyed. To borrow a line from the ballad of James Connolly “gone is a man that loved Ireland so well”. His remains reposed at his residence on Wednesday last and on Thursday was removed to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro for his Funeral Mass and following Mass his remains were laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery. A measure of his popularity was clearly evident by the attendance on both Wednesday and Thursday. To his wife Deirdre, daughter Katie, son Kevin, father Peter, mother Trish, brothers Peadar and Noel, sisters Kitty, Mag and Pat, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
It has been a week of Success for Lanesboro Community Games.
The Project Team of Conor Sorohan, Sean Kenny and Harvey Myhill got first prise for their excellent presentation of their Ideal country “Ballareik”.
In the County Talent Solo Singing competition, Aisling Casey won a gold medal, getting first prise from a large field of contestants. Aishling’s performance of the classic Leonard Coen Song Hallelujah was a huge undertaking for her first time on stage, but after a few small nerves Aisling made this song her own it was a match for any of the X-factor versions of the song.
In the County Art Competition, Lanesboro had two gold medallists, Jack Casserly and Tanya Farrell with James Gavigan winning a bronze medal.
The results of the County U-10 Handwriting competitions in which Aoife Nolan and Cillian Cox represented Lanesboro are unannounced as yet.
All of the above gold medal winners will represent Lanesboro and Longford at the first weekend of the National Community Games finals in May. Having seven children reaching this stage across a number of disciplines is a great level of success and hopefully this number will be extended further when our U-16 Table Tennis Team plays the Leinster matches and the hand writing results are announced.
Well done to all the children who took part in the county competitions and for the parents assistance in getting them to the various venues.
If you, your family or friends have sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers, blankets, shoes, toys or teddy bears you are asked to drop them top Mike Greene’s house on the Green. Your support will be of great benefit to the club.
Rathcline GAA
Congratulations to our Reserve League team and management after winning their third game on the trot away to Carrickedmond last Sunday. It finished 2-12 to 1-10 to Rathcline, a result which leaves Rathcline top of the table ahead of the break for the Senior League. There will be a six week break in the competition before resuming against Sean Connolly’s.
Our senior team kick off the league this Saturday against reigning county champions Longford Slashers. The game throws in at 6.15pm at Clonbonny. It would be fantastic to get as many parishioners out as possible to support the lads under new manager Enda Macken. Also, the tireless work to prepare Clonbonny for the opening game of the season must be complemented.
Congratulations to the Rathcline Ladies on a great start to their League campaign, they defeated Dromard at Clonbonny last Saturday.
The club extends its sympathy to the Carberry family, Killinure, after the recent death of Brendan Carberry.
The Annual Longford GAA Race Day at Punchestown Racecourse will take place on Wednesday, 25th April this year. Anybody interested in attending can contact Liam Connerton, Albert Cooney or Chris Cullen.
Finally, the club are currently in the process of compiling a number of old photographs to display on the Clubhouse walls. If anybody has any old images of past events or people who were connected with the club (in any capacity), the club would greatly appreciate the opportunity to borrow these photographs to scan and hang on the walls. Rathcline GAA has a fantastic history and tradition, and it would be great to display that history for all to see.
The Longford Branch of Multiple Sclerosis is holding their annual Church Gate collection at all masses on Saturday 31st March and Sunday 1st April. Your generous support will be appreciated.
Summer Time
Early on Sunday 21st March 1am sees the beginning of summer time and the clocks will go forward one hour. The sign of times to come and hopefully there will be many many long hot summer days for us all to enjoy.
Longford Person of the Year
Each year the Longford Association in Dublin celebrates with a Gala Dinner Dance where they celebrate the recipients of the Longford Person of the Year. This year, it is a tremendous pleasure and honour to have amongst us one of the joint winners of Longford Person of the year. Ciaran Mullooly was announced last week along with John Donlon, Moydow, as the joint recipients of this year’s award. It is always a wonderful tribute to be recognised by your own people and we congratulate Ciaran on this great honour.
Ciaran’s great work year on year is being recognised with this award. He stayed local throughout his early schooling days having attended the Boy’s National School on the Green before moving on to Lanesboro Vocational school. Ciaran’s propensity towards journalism shone through from an early age when he was the Longford News junior reporter for the National School where he was bitten by the journalism bug.
Ciaran’s career in journalism commenced with the Longford Leader where he got his first job as a reporter before moving to the Cavan Leader where his career went from strength to strength. He then moved on to our local Shannonside radio station where he was to the fore in reporting in the current affairs of the local area. Ciaran then moved to the hugely popular TV farming series Ear to the Ground where he reached every home in the country. His reporting skills were well noticed by the RTÉ News team where he moved to following his very successful time with Ear to the Ground. Ciaran moved to the RTÉ and has become an integral part of the news team serving as the midlands correspondent.
He has played his part in the Shannon Gaels Minor Club and Rathcline GAA club both as a player and club official. He has and continues to have a great interest in the development of his native Rathcline parish and Ballyleague where he now lives with his wife Angela and sons Brian and Owen.
The award is well deserved and I am absolutely sure there will be a huge number of Rathcline people in the Red Cow Moran’s Hotel on Saturday 14th April. If you want to buy tickets for the night out and it is a night that every Longford person in Dublin and surrounds should miss you should contact Dessie Kiernan 087 9276767, Liam Caldwell 087 2595963 or Yvonne Mc Cormack 086 8548282. Tickets are only €45 for a five-course meal and music by the hugely popular P.J. Murrihy and his band. All in all it promises to be a great night.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
If proof was needed then the success of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday last 17th March without doubt showed that community spirit was alive and well in Lanesboro and Ballyleague. There is undoubted spirit in abundance and the general comment from one and all right throughout the weekend was the ability and cohesiveness within our community to create and pull off a marvellous occasion, once again. It is definitely a time for everyone to take a bow and to be hugely proud of your efforts and achievements.
Such was the scale of the efforts by the committee and the participants that almost 30 floats wound its way from St. Faithleach’s GAA grounds through Ballyleague and Lanesboro all the way to the Community College on the outskirts of town. Of all the parades since its inception this proved to be the ultimate parade for the town, a boost for the morale and an indication of the spirit and pride that lies at the heart of all great community efforts.
The parade was full of colour, entertainment and all current topical issues were addressed by the float entrants. The beauty of the parade is the proximity of the floats to the throngs, and this year it was throngs, and the fact that everyone one taking part is local with everyone knowing each other and part of our community.
As the crowds were gathering on a chilly, overcast but dry afternoon, they were entertained by the excellent ‘Acting the Magot’ who brought their great musical style to the streets of Lanesboro. Young and old also availed of the free face painting and the atmosphere was electric as word filtered through that the parade was on its way. Our local butcher Terry Mc Loughlin added to the atmosphere by roasting a pig on a spit which was a sight to be seen.
We must pay special comment to the committee for their great work in organising the occasion. Their time and effort did really pay off.
The parade was led by the Peter Keenan ONE branch – this is the organisation for ex-servicemen of the Irish Defence Forces. It was fitting that the flag bearer and to the fore was local man Pat Masterson who was joined in the parade by another local ex-serviceman John Farrell, formerly Knock. Longford Pipe Band again proved what a tremendous pipe band they are and created a marvellous atmosphere and array of marching tunes.
The floats that took part were; Lanesborough Fire Brigade, St. Mary’s National School Newtowncashel, Mike Kenny With His Enterprising Trap, Michael Egan – Massey Ferguson 135, Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club – Van And Boat, Gerard Farrell Agri Supplier, Michael Hanly Continues To Turf Cut, St. Faithleach’s Celebrating 50 Years, Steve Ormsby, Clarkes Bar – Gone Vintage, Top Filling Station – In Full Action, Kevin Mc Kenna – Karate Club, Lanesborough Pike Angling Club Pop Eye, Community College Lanesborough, Larry Leavy – Pick Your Headstone Now! Jimmy Hussey On His Bike, Terry Mc Loughlin – Local Butcher Roasts His Pig For Charity, Chris Cullen Mr Fix It Himself, Shannon Gaels Minor Club, Ted Falvey – Fresh n Ready Vegetables, Lanesborough Triathlon Club, Supervalu Lanesborough, Mickey Connaughton – With his vintage model, Roscommon Disability Support Group, Ballyleague Tidy Towns and Ballyboro Scouts – In Disney Land.
Early Days of the GAA
A talk which should be of interest to all Longford GAA followers takes place in the Longford arms Hotel on this Thursday 22nd March at 8.30pm. In preparation, Tommy Flynn of the well-known GAA family has done extensive research into the GAA in the county. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Pooper Scoopers
All dog walkers are asked to note that free pooper scoopers are available in O’Brien’s Corner Shop. Hopefully all dag owners will avail of these and keep our streets free from dog excrement
Wedding
The marriage took place at St. Cecilia’s Church, Curraghroe, on Friday last 16th March of Paula Cox daughter of Dan and Mary Cox, Culleenora, Curraghroe and Peter Droog, son of Hans and Anne Droog Adare, Co. Limerick. Chief bridesmaid was Mary Cox, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Aoife Higgins and Marie Ryan, both friends of the bride. Bestman was Colm Cribbin, friend of the groom, and groomsmen were Aidan O’Rahilly and Stephen Lavin, both friends of the groom. The usher was Stephen Droog, cousin of the groom. The flower girl was Aliana Carley, cousin of the groom. The chief celebrant was Fr Donal Mc Namara, St. Munchin’s Limerick, assisted by Fr. Ray Browne, Ballagh, and Fr. Michael Breslin, Ballygar. The wedding reception was held in Lough Rynn Castle, Mohill. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.
Football Tradition continues
When is draw a good thing? For me the draw between Garrycastle and Crossmaglen in the All Ireland club football final on St. Patrick’s Day was my saving grace. One of the families that was a mainstay of the Rathcline club for many a year had one of their offspring playing for Garrycastle and in the lead up to the match I omitted to mention it in these notes. Doran Harte, son of Matt Harte, grandson of the late John and Lollie Harte, The Green and Barnacor, nephew of Owen Harte, centre back on our only championship winning team, Loretto Gallagher, Barnacor, Carrie, Jack, Georgie, Miriam and the late Joe and has played a prominent role in Garrycastle’s historic run to the All-Ireland club Final. We wish Doran and his teammates every success in the replay and let’s hope that the Andy Merrigan Cup comes to back to Athlone.
Vandalism
While I have been writing earlier about the magnificence of St. Patrick’s Day in our community it grieves me to think that some mindless vandalism can spoil all that the good of our celebrations. Recently, Longford Council erected a nice street figure on the footpath at the entrance on to the bridge. On Saturday night/Sunday morning some mindless moron decided to uproot it from it position and carry it across the bridge and dump it into a derelict area. Only for an alert and civic minded lady noticed it and reported her sighting the chances are that it would have lay out of sight and rotted away. We thank the lady for being so observant and look forward to the figure being put back in place and hopefully a recurrence of this moronic vandalism will not take place again.
Engagement
Many congratulations to Padraig Wallace son of Sonny and Mary Claire Wallace, Strokestown Road and Janet Melia, daughter of Sean and Anne Melia, Newtowncashel who announced their engagement recently.
Credit Union AGM
The AGM of the Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union will take place in the Inis Ree Lodge Nursing Home on Monday night next 26th March at 8.30pm.
This is your Credit Union and it for and about you and your presence at the AGM will be much appreciated. As we continue to go through troubled financial times your continued support is the strength of our local Credit Union and you are urged to continue your great support.
As this is the joint 43rd and 44th AGM there are a number of important items on the agenda and your attendance is essential.
Lanesboro Primary School Enrolment
Enrolment for September 2012 will be held in Lanesboro Primary School on Friday week 23rd March at 1pm. Parents and their children are invited to call to the school around this time. This is an ideal opportunity to come and visit the school, meet with the Principal and teachers. For further information please contact us at 043/3321545.
INTO/EBS Handwriting Competition
Congratulations to Joshua Crawford in Junior Infants for being awarded second place for his handwriting in Co Longford.
Thank You
The Rathcline Ladies GAA club would like to sincerely thank everyone that turned up in Clonbonny on Sunday last and also to everyone that contributed to the voluntary donations on their way into the match. The sum realised was €1237 and the club will forward the money to the Mater Hospital Appeal towards the Hospitals Family Heart Screening Clinic.
The club would like to thank everyone that helped in any way, the Rathcline Senior Club and Shannon Gael Minor Club, those that helped in the clubhouse and around the grounds. The club would like to thank Garrycastle for their great input into the day’s event.
The match was an excellent with both teams giving their all in the name of one of the best servants. Alison’s mother Pat presented the winning trophy to the winning Rathcline side and while it was an emotional game for all, it was a fitting acknowledgement of the wonderful lady Alison was.
Next weekend the club will get its campaign for the new season underway when they entertain Dromard in what should be a keenly contested game. At the time of going to press we do not have a time or day for the fixture but when confirmed it will be posted in O’Brien’s window.
Death
The news saddened the hearts of everyone when it was learned of the death on Sunday 11th March at Roscommon Hospital County Hospital of Beatrice Glennon, Cloonadra. Beatrice was predeceased some years back by her husband Bertie. Beatrice was a most friendly and affable lady. She had a great warmness about her that commended her to those that were fortunate enough to know her. She was renowned as a hard working lady and no task fazed her in any way. In recent times her health was failing but in her own inimitable way she dealt with her cross with the strength and dignity she lived her life. Her remains reposed in her son Greg’s home on Monday and her remains were removed to The Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Tuesday for her Funeral Mass. Following Mass her remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery. To her sons Dermot, Michael, Greg and Brendan, daughters Catherine and Irene, sisters, Miriam and Bernadette, relatives and a host of friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Afterwards salad and soup will be served in the clubhouse followed by the prize giving and the AGM. It is hoped that all members can attend this important meeting to elect the new committee for 2012 and plan the outings for the coming year.
St. John’s Plates.
Following on from the great uptake on the sales of the commemorative candles with an imprint of St. John’s Church emblazoned on it comes a commemorative plate to mark the 150th celebration; Both the plate and the candle can be bough in O’Brien’s, Gareth Johnston’s Health Bank or from any member of the committee.
As you are now aware this is a very special year for the congregation of St. John’s Church as they celebrate 150 year of their church on the weekend 20th April where a number of events will take place throughout the weekend. The committee is still seeking any memorabilia, artefacts or old photographs relating to St. John’s church. There has been an excellent response to this call and it is great to see such a great response. If you have any material relating to the Church please contact Philip Mc Garry, Gardenstown or Tora Crooke, The Green or any member of the congregation.
is now set for our very own St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Following huge time and
effort by the hard working committee in the preparation and the clubs,
organisations and businesses the stage is set for another tremendous St/ Patrick’s Day
parade in Ballyleague and Lanesboro. The most vital part of the organisation to
make it the best yet are the stewards that will man and patrol the event and
ensure that everything runs smoothly on Saturday. If you have not already
volunteered your services then it is not too late to be part of one of the best
events in Ballyleague and Lanesboro. If you can be part of the day contact
Teresa Costello or Freda Connaughton. The parade will start from St. Faithleach’s
club grounds at 2.30pm and it will wind its way through Ballyleague and
Lanesboro right up to the Community College where refreshments will be served
for all participants.

There
will be prizes for Best Window, Best Junior Float, Best Club Float, Best Business
Float, Overall Float and Most Original Float.

Come
along and enjoy a wonderful day in Lanesboro and no matter how bad the troubles
of the country are affecting us there can be nothing better than a celebration
among locals and friends in your own native area. Activities on the day will be
face painting, pig roasting and live music by our own local and hugely popular
group Actin da Magot.

I
expect that every building along the route will make the special effort in
decorating their house and business which will add greatly to the atmosphere of
the day.

Tickets
are now on sale to help defray the cost of organising the parade and your
support would be greatly appreciated. Tickets, €2 each or book of 3 for €5, are
on sale in O’Brien’s and throughout the area and perhaps this might be your
lucky day when you purchase your tickets and win some of the €1000 prize money.

your usual generous support for this very worthy cause.

Cloontuskert –
The Abbey

The
new initiative for Cloontuskert – The Abbey, to gather memories, stories and
photographs has really taken off as can be seen on Facebook. The momentum will
gain greater speed this coming week when the main man Padraic Best will be in
the area gathering as much information as possible. It should be a mighty
weekend, I am sure Padraic will no doubt organise a get together to get as many
stories and tales of time past.

If
you have information you can send it to Padraic at the website set up for this
initiative http://www.memoriesofhome.me/. Gerry and
Martina Trautt are helping assemble all old pictures, memorabilia and writings
in relation to the area.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

Lough Ree
Golfing Society is kicking off 2012 with a scramble in Strokestown Golf Club on
Saturday week 24th March at 10.30am. Tea and scones will be served
in the clubhouse at 10.30am where the teams for the scramble will be selected
and the teams will then tee off at 11am.

Afterwards salad
and soup will be served in the clubhouse followed by the prize giving and the
AGM. It is hoped that all members can attend this important meeting to elect
the new committee for 2012 and plan the outings for the coming year.

As usual you are
asked to text 087-9730611 to confirm attendance.

The society
welcomes both young and old golfers from the Lanesboro Ballyleague area to the
society. This is a local society with all local members and it would be a great
achievement to have all past and present residents of our area coming together
a great day out and enjoying present and past tales.

New Pilates Course

Remembering Alison this Sunday

The
Rathcline Ladies GAA will remember the passing of one of their and the county’s
finest footballers Alison Smyth in the only way that is fitting to such a fine
footballer. Alison also played with Garrycastle, Athlone for a short while and
on Sunday next 18th March both teams will honour Alison when they
will play each other in a memorial match. The club invites everyone to go along
and join the celebration of the life of a very special lady Alison Smyth. The
can be no better way of both clubs to recognise her memory than by the coming
together for this match. The throw in for the game will be 5.30pm. There will
be refreshments in the clubhouse following the game. We hope the Garrycastle
senior men footballers will the previous day be crowned All Ireland club
champions and the Andy Merrigan Cup will pay a visit to Clonbonny.

The
proceeds of the game will go towards the Sudden Adult Death Syndrome unit in
the Mater Hospital. The Mater Hospital raises
much needed funds for the Mater Hospitals Family Heart Screening Clinic, where
relatives of loved ones, who have died from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome)
or survived a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, can be screened for undiagnosed Heart
Conditions.

This is a
wonderful gesture as it will give hope in heart and mind to everyone that needs
to can avail of the wonderful service that the Mater provides. Your support
will definitely be a great help in the life of others.
