Rally to Support

While we all feel that the Government needs to make crucial and critical cutbacks in spending in an effort to get the economy back on an even keel. The last thing we expected was that while the minister was making announcements on pension cuts that could not be touched unless by the express permission of these ‘pensioners’ he was cutting a vital service to the real pensioners. He was suspending the funding for the Scheme of Community Support for old people.

At a time that not alone pensioners are feeling very vulnerable in their homes and business he hits at the most defenceless in our country. He hits out at the people that put this country on its feet that worked through the last recession to build and make the country what it was before greed and avarice over took in the past few years and swiftly allowed the carpet of support to be pulled swiftly from under their feet. Surely they deserve much better respect that what was bestowed on them in the last election.

As the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs tersely put it “As a result, the funding for a range of activities supported by this Department has had to be curtailed to meet the Government’s objectives”.

Rathcline Neighbourhood Watch group will hold a meeting in the Lough Ree Development Co-Op Hall on Tuesday 5th May at 8.30pm. The Garda Superintendant, local Garda Sergeant Martina Reddington and public representatives will be in attendance. It is extremely important that a huge crowd attend this meeting and voice their opinion on such a crucial and most worthy cause. Questions must be asked and answers must be obtained in response. The people of Rathcline should rise in one voice and ensure that this is the case.

Pilgrimage to Lourdes

The Ardagh Clonmacnois Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from Wednesday 27th May to Monday 1st June. The pilgrimage will be led by Bishop Colm O’Reilly, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois. The pilgrimage Director is Monsignor Bernard Noonan, Moate phone 090 6481180 and the invalid section is dealt by Fr. Michael Scanlon P.P. Cloghan phone 0902-57122. The cost of the pilgrimage is €725 inclusive per person.

You can get you eggs, bread; cards, knit-wear, bags, scarves, jams, plants, and vegetables etc. and enjoy a cup of tea.

Lá na gClub

Shannon Gael Minor Club has embarked on major club plan for the 125th celebrations of the GAA. The club would like to encourage all the support of the community for their celebrations on Sunday week 10th April. The club would like to see all members of the parish putting out a club flag from this weekend.

The day starts off with all members of Rathcline GAA assembling in the car-park at 10.30am. The club will parade behind the army pipe band from the bridge to St. Mary’s Church where there will be a special Mass at 11.30am remembering all deceased club members and honouring those that have and continue to develop the club. It is a special privilege for the club that the chief celebrant will be our Parish Priest Fr. Mickey Reilly who is one of Longford’s legendary footballers.

The club will also make a special presentation at the Church of Ireland parishioners at St. John’s Church.  Following Mass the club activities of the day will commence in Clonbonny where there will be a host of activities.

There will be a celebrity match between former players with team managements to be seen to be believed. Size and lack of stamina will no doubt be the order of the day – although the rumour is that some players have been seen running the roads and fields around Carrowstrawley in order to be a step ahead of the townies. The teams – Rathcline and Honest John Martins- and team mentors will be announced next week. Look out for some legendary household names. This game is assured to bring tears but it will be tears of laughter. There will be an exhibition of rounders by the under 16 panel. There will be a match between the senior team and the under 14s in both ladies and men.

There will be the unveiling of a plaque in memory of everybody that has worked, played and supported the club since its inception.  There will also be an unveiling of club historical documents from its earliest days in the reception room. These documents were kindly donated to the club by Eddie Farrell and we are most grateful to him for his gesture.

Kieran Feeney has been busy throughout the parish getting interviews from club members and players both past and present and his excellent interviews will also get its first airing.  The club will also announce a panel to investigate and document a history of our club.

There will be a launch of a census of the population of foreign nationals in the parish and adopt an inclusion plan to make them feel part of and participate in our club events. The cultural side of the GAA Scόr will also take a place of pride in the celebrations especially as it is a developing activity in the club and bringing so much enjoyment to so many club members.

This promises to be a wonderful day for the club and parish and it is very important that you are part of the celebrations. A collection will be taken up on the day with the full proceeds going to the Special Olympics.

The day of celebrations will be brought to a close with a ‘Hooley and Oiche Céoil’ in The Peer Inn, Lisnacusha. The club encourages all to finish off a great day with a great night out.

The club would like to invite anybody that was part of the parish in any stage of their lives back to the club for the day. It would be great to relive memories and meet up with old friends and fellow parishioners.

Lough Ree Athletic Club

The club organised a very successful sportsday for the Primary Schools in the area. The following schools too part: – Lanesboro NS, Ballyleague NS, Fermoyle NS, Cloontagh NS, Newtowncashel NS and for the first time Gaelscoil, Longford. The numbers were huge and anymore would have given the hard working officials big problems. Indeed – teachers, students, parents and officials are to be complimented on making the day so pleasant for all.

The medals were well distributed between the schools and it was pleasing to see that the club athletes were to the fore on many occasions. It was also great to see Longford Sports Co-ordinator Siobhan Mc Guinness paying a visit.

As this scribe has not all the results to hand it would be foolish to comment on some performances and ignore others. However, it is safe to say that the Rooney sisters had an exceptional day winning two of the three individual events. Shannon won the 80 meters and 400 meters for 6th class while Hayley had the same success with the 4th class events.

Max Zimarves (Lanesboro NS) seems to be the only boy that won two medals i.e. Ball Throw and Long Jump for 5th class.

Indeed one of the most striking pieces of information to come from the day was he number of winners that are not in the club. Of course, this is one of the reasons for the Sportsday – making youngsters and parents aware of they have. The club’s part is “to bring the horse to the water” They cannot make them drink!

Awards: Apart from the usual medals for the 1st three, there were three special awards. Outstanding Male Competitor – Michael Burke, Cloontagh N. Michael won the 4th class Ball Throw and threw the sliothar further than his contempories in 5th and 6th class.

Outstanding Female Competitor – Enda Berga, Lanesboro NS threw the sliothar further than any of her female competitors, she also threw it further than any of the boys! The ball throw is not a

‘mickey mouse’ event, it is a fore runner to throwing the Javelin and originated in Sweden.

The Surprise of the Day Award – Conor Nealon Fermoyle NS. His performances were the surprise of the day based on the athletes he beat.

In view of the success of the fixture and questions asked the club decided to have an evening meeting for the schools who were unable to travel on Thursday last, more about that later when the schools are consulted.

Heart Foundation Walk

“Your Heart is your Health” is a comment is seldom heard but it is something that we must take very seriously. The Irish Heart Foundation is once again organising the Kerry Walk to raise much needed funds for ongoing work in helping to support the fight against heart attack and stroke.

Once again I am taking to the roads of Kerry to help this very worthwhile cause and I ask for your usual generous support. Each year your contributions are in the region of €2,000 and I hope with your support to able to give the same amount again this year. Your support is really humbling and it is a great pleasure for me to represent you in helping to fight heart disease and stroke. As is usual the full sum of your of your contributions will go to the Heart Foundation as I will be paying my own way to ensure this.

The Irish Heart Foundation is Ireland’s only national charity for heart health and is working to reduce premature death and disability from heart disease and stroke. Your contribution can and will be a great assistance in helping the Irish Heart Foundation.

Church Painting

In the very near future it is hoped to commence painting of the exterior of St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro. If you would like to have your view as the colour scheme you can see the suggested colours towards the rear of the church on the Old School Road side of the church. Fr. Mickey would welcome your view as to your colour preference.

U11 Semi-Final: Ballyboro Lions V Castlepollard Reds. Final Score 2-1.
This semi-final got off to a cracking start in Abbeycartron on Saturday last with both teams fighting for a place in the upcoming Final. Jonathan Hussey, Shane Phillips & Mikey Cox had some fine chances for Boro in the 1st half while Castlepollard had chances with 7 corners. Eran Farrell pulled off a cracking save before the half-time whistle with neither team having secured a goal, things were neck-in-neck. Two minutes into the 2nd half, Castlepollard scored and put the pressure on Boro. Boro replied when a Kevin Sorohan corner resulted in an OG for Boro. The weather broke and both teams fought hard while the rain poured down. Jack Irwin & Joseph Farrell controlled defence while Mikey Cox was outstanding in mid-field. Cian Gannon came on for Boro finding the ball in box and chipped it into the back of the net with 2 minutes to go. Boro were roaring home but Castlepollard fought back hard although time was running out. Niall Nolan came on for Boro before Mikey Cox got unlucky to find his last minute goal for Boro disallowed. A magnificent team performance for Boro under very poor weather conditions securing their place in the final against Lisryan.
U10 Semi-Final: Ballyboro Tigers V UCL Warriors. Final Score 3-1.
Ballyboro Tigers made it to the Final of the Under 10’s with a great win over a very strong UCL Warriors side. Boro took the lead 5 minutes into the game when Darren Nerney’s shot from outside the box found the back of the net. 5 minutes later Daniel Foley got a ‘goal of the season’ with a fantastic header from ten yards. UCL fought back and scored 1 minute before half-time. Boro’s defence and James Bennett in goals made sure things stayed that way. In the second half, Boro were much stronger. They piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a 3rd goal when Daniel Foley struck again. Best for Boro were James Bennett in goals, Darren Nerney, Ronan Healy, Luke Parker and Man of the Match, Daniel Foley. Ballyboro Tigers play against Melview Lions in the upcoming Final.

Death

It was with great sadness we learned of the death at the County Hospital Roscommon on Sunday 19th April of Paddy Killian Main Street. Paddy was from one of the oldest and most respected families in the parish. He was a man big in stature with a great outlook on life. Paddy worked for the Sisters of Mercy for his working life and indeed when they owned and resided at Rathcline House he farmed their land meticulously. Paddy was a lovely man and his passing will sadden the hearts of those that knew him. His remains were removed from Farrell’s Funeral Home on Monday last to St. Mary’s Church and burial took place to Clonbonny cemetery following his Funeral Mass on Tuesday.
