Death

There was a great cloud of sadness cast within our community when it was learned on Friday 1st July at the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar of Eileen Ganly, 48 The Green. Eileen along with her husband Tom and family moved to the Green many years ago. Eileen was predeceased by her son Fr. Liam, Mill Hill Missionaries. She was a woman who enjoyed life, loved all aspects of nature and a lady that always put her family first. Eileen immediately became an integral part of the community and was involved in many parts of parish life. She was a founder member of the Active Age group many years ago as well as being involved in local drama. Eileen was always good for a laugh, she had razor sharp wit and words at will. Five years ago she suffered a stroke but right up to the very last her marvellous will to live and positive strength of mind remained. Eileen will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure to know her.

Her remains reposed at her residence on Sunday and again on Monday until the removal of her remains on Tuesday to St. Mary’s Church. Her Funeral mass took place on Tuesday followed by the interment of her remains to Clonbonny cemetery.

To her husband Tom, daughters Elaine and Denise, sons Sean, Aiden, Declan and David, brother John, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Celebrate Local Biodiversity

This is a great opportunity for everyone to work together and celebrate our local biodiversity.

It is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the environment. On the 27th August with Bord na Mona and local community groups we will be holding an environmental awareness event in Corlea, Co Longford. This community event is for everyone with an interest in the environment around us. The event will focus on recording all biodiversity (birds, mammals, plants, mosses and invertebrates) in Corlea and will focus on habitats such as cutaway bog, intact raised bog and scrub.

During the day events such as a bird talk, bat walk, moth trapping along with general biodiversity walks will be organised. All events will be free of charge and will be available to everyone, young and old. A timetable of events will be available soon.

If you or your group would be interested in helping run one of the events on the day, please let me know and we can work together on a schedule of events. Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who may be interested. Contact David Fallon: David.Fallon@bnm.ie phone; 087 9711658 or 057 9345993

Matron of Honour was Loretta Finlay, sister of the bride and bridesmaid was Sinead Larkin best friend of the bride. The Flower girls were Ellie and Katie Finlay nieces of the bride.  The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Shane Crombie, Daingean assisted by Fr. Michael Reilly, Lanesboro. The wedding reception took place in the County Arms Hotel, Birr, Co. Offaly. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.

Connaught Final

All roads led to Salthill on Sunday last for the Connaught Football Final between Roscommon and Galway. The day was lousy with constant rain and a strong breeze not lending itself to good football, nor did get any, but what we got was a game there that had never more than three points in the difference. That three-point difference diminished to one point and tightness that remained right up to the final whistle when both sides finished on a scoreline of Galway 0-13 Roscommon 1-10. Both sides deserved the opportunity to have another day and we look forward to having a much better day suitable for the playing of good football and we also look forward to Ciaran Murtagh raising the Nestor Cup and having it resting in Ballyleague for the next 12 months.

At the time of writing the replay is provisionally fixed for Mc Hale Park, Castlebar on Saturday next 16th July with no throw in time listed at the moment.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Vera Smyth, Derryhaun who passed away at the weekend. She was formerly Vera Coyle, Knock and we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to her daughters Regina, Antoinette and Karen, brother Jackie, sisters Mary, Theresa, Dina and Irene, relatives and her many friends.

Poetry at the Sisters

Following on to the very successful ‘Poetry at the Sisters’ last month it has been decided to hold another hour of Poetry again at the Sisters Restaurant on Main Street. It is particularly nice to have cultural events happening at different venues in our community and it would be great to see more happening.

You are invited to go along to the Sisters enjoy the many niceties they have on offer in their restaurant and enjoy hearing the poetry of local people whether they compose it themselves or they are reading from other poets. Interspersed amid the poetry will be some music making this a real live and vibrant hour.

You are invited to go along between 4 and 5pm this Wednesday 13th July and perhaps you may bring along a poem of your own and read it to the gathering.

Longford Upset the Odds

Last Saturday Longford senior team travelled to Clones to play Monaghan, Ulster Champions 2015 in the qualifiers. This game in the words of one national journalist was to be shooting practice for Monaghan. How wrong can one journalist be? Longford played heroically for the full 70 minutes and emerged victorious on a scoreline of Longford 2-13 to Monaghan’s 1-13. Days like this have not come along very often but already this championship Longford has beaten two Division 1 teams showing that there is the ability in Longford to compete at the top level. We hope that they will now proceed in their next round on Saturday next where they have a home draw against Cork

Congratulations to Denis Connerton, Liam Connerton and Shane Kenny and their team on a wonderful success.

It was great to hear throughout Sunday of the large number from the parish that made the journey to support the team. Fair play to you all for the support of your county and you were duly rewarded for your support.

Blood Donation Clinic

The Blood Donation Clinic returns to Longford at the Longford Arms Hotel on Tuesday 26th, Wednesday 27th, and Thursday 28th July. The clinic will be open from 4.30 and 8pm each of the three days.

There is always a great demand for blood and at this time of the year with holidays and other travels there tends to be a drop off in donors but the high demand for blood still remains. If you are already a donor and have not been there for a while, please consider going back and if you have not previously donated blood please begin in the Longford Arms on the above dates.

If you cannot make it to Longford for this clinic then mark in the next clinic in the Hyde Centre, Athlone Road, Roscommon from Tuesday 16th August to Thursday 18th August.

Ballyleague Village Renewal

The Mayor of Roscommon has given his approval to an impressive plan to develop a new walkway and amenity along the Roscommon road into the village of Ballyleague.

Councillor Tony Ward and the CEO of Roscommon County Council Eugene Cummins were on hand in the Shannonside village last Friday evening when the local tidy towns group Ballyleague Village Renewal unveiled a 10,000 Euro project which has already started with the development of a beautiful newly faced limestone wall on the outskirts of the village beside the derelict Lakeview filling station.

“We are working with the county council to make it safe for all local residents to walk into their own village” Gerry Trimble from the Village Renewal works committee said, “we have made a good start with the new wall and we will now build on this with some very well planned landscaping along the route to the hill of Cloonadra.”

Last weekend’s event at Ballyleague included a demonstration on traditional stone wall building by the stone mason Tom Fitzmaurice which was thoroughly enjoyed by neighbours and residents in the area. The project was highly commended by the new CEO of Roscommon county council Mr Eugene Cummins.

To help pay for this project Ballyleague Village Renewal committee is staging a church gate collection this coming weekend before the 7pm mass on Saturday July 16th and the 11am mass on Sunday July 17th at Ballyleague church. Donations to the project can also be made through Treasurer JP Kilcline or Fr John McManus in Ballyleague or by e mailing keepballyleaguetidy@gmail.com.

The local committee wish to take this opportunity to wish Fr John McManus well in his new parish in Castlerea. He will be sorely missed in Ballyleague.
