Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Football Feast

Next weekend will provide a feast of football in Pearse Park where the Junior A and B finals will take place on Saturday and the Intermediate and replay of the senior final on Sunday. Happily for the Rathcline club they are to play a part in the biggest footballing weekend of the sporting calendar in Longford and in fact kick off the weekend of football when they play in the Junior B Final on Saturday against Carrickedmond. The team has prepared well for this game and we hope that there will be a huge local support from the parish in Pearse Park for the throw in time of 3pm. We wish the lads well and look forward to the junior title resting in Lanesboro for the year.

Sunday will see our neighbours Cashel in their second Intermediate final where they will take on Carrickedmond in the opening game. This will be followed by the mouth watering clash of Clonguish and Dromard in the replay of the County Senior Final. Following the wonderful performance in the drawn game this game promises so much and it is a game not to be missed by anybody interest in Gaelic Games.

The county final in Leitrim also takes place on Sunday next and we would like to wish Carrigallen the very best of luck. The Carrigallen team is managed by our local postman Colin Hannify.

An added interest is the Westmeath final which I believe takes place on Sunday week between St. Loman’s and Garrycastle. The St. Loman’s team is being managed by local man Wally Burke. Wally had a successful spell with St. Faithleach’s getting them to two county finals before taking up his appointment with St. Loman’s. It is their first final appearance in over 40 years and we wish Wally and his team the very best of luck and hope many locals will make the journey to Mullingar for the final.

Posters Vandalised

It is with great regret that I have been informed of not only the taking down but also the taking away of the Lisbon Treaty posters. A number of the ‘YES’ posters at the church and Main St areas have vanished without trace and this is a great shame. Everybody is entitled to voice their own opinion and it is a great shame that anybody would try and diminish the freedom of opinion. If anybody has any knowledge of the whereabouts of the posters can they inform me and I will inform those that put those posters up and have them collected or just leave them at the back of the shop.

Death

It was with great sadness and regret that we learned of the sudden death at her residence on the Longford Road of Mrs. Kathleen Connerton. Kathleen formerly lived and reared her large family with her late husband Billy, who predeceased her 6 years ago, at the Round House, The Green. As well as her husband she was also predeceased by her daughter Carol. Kathleen, a native of Mayo, was a lovely lady whose gentle ways and gentle nature stood her a lady apart. She was a dedicated and loving mother whose priority was to her family each of whom did her proud. She had resided at her granny flat on the grounds of Liam’s house for the past few years. She was an excellent neighbour and her passing will sadden the hearts of everybody that had the pleasure and honour to know her both. Her remains were removed from her residence on Thursday last to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro and burial took place to Clonbonny Cemetery following her Funeral Mass on Friday. To her daughters Mary, Angela, Phyllis, and Vera, sons Denis, Liam and Padraig, brother, sister relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Lough Ree Athletic Club

After a summer of Track & Field, Cross Country re-opens the new athletic season. The word “cross-country” is frightening to some. Why this is so remains a mystery! After all, it is only middle-distant running that helps develop stamina, which is essential in all sports.

Schools: Call it what you will, it starts this week with the Primary Schools competitions. The venue for the county Longford \event is St. Mel’s College on Saturday 26th Sept at 3pm, while in Roscommon the championships will take place at the racecourse on Thursday 1st October at 11am. All schools are notified and we are hoping that there will be a large turnout from the local schools.

The club has commenced training on Tuesday evenings in Clonbonny, starting at 5pm and finishing about 5.30pm. With club competition commencing shortly for the younger age groups, there are teams to be selected and it is important all turn up for training.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

On Wednesday last 16th September, the 4th outing of 2009 was to Mount Temple Golf Course.  Eighteen players enjoyed a wonderful day’s golf at this exquisite course on one of the sunniest days of our Indian summer.  The excellent condition of the fairways and greens coupled with the fine day resulted in some very good scores.  The following were the results:  Nearest the pin on the first green was won by our captain, Paddy Donlon;  the front nine was won by Brendan Whitty on 22 points and the back nine was won by Peter Day, also on 22 points.  Second with 42 points was Frank Conmy and the first prize with a fine score of 46 points was won by Ray McCormack from Newtownforbes. Many thanks to Mick Dolan and the green keepers at Mount Temple for the wonderful condition of the course.  Thanks to Mick also for sponsoring the nearest the pin prize. Thanks too, to Jimmy and Breda Brennan, The Peer Inn, for their kind sponsorship.  The tasty and wholesome homemade soup and sandwiches provided by the lovely ladies in the clubhouse afterwards was much appreciated:  many thanks to all.
Our final outing for 2009 is the fun Christmas one at Strokestown Golf Course on the 5th December, tee off at 11 am followed by the AGM.

There are many doors that can open for those that wish to pursue refereeing to county level. In the past few years Longford has been represented at national level very successfully and it would be great to see one of our own club people in the not too distant future also gracing these fields on the biggest days on the GAA calendar.
