Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Wednesday12th July 2017

      Lanesboro Ballyleague

Nestor Cup resides in Ballyleague

When we find ourselves out of the running there is always a wonderful satisfaction and joy in seeing our neighbours, friends and their children winning and celebrating. Such was the case on Sunday last when a wonderful performance by the Roscommon team brought wonderful excitement to our community.

Little did we know when Ciaran Murtagh led the Roscommon team out onto the Pearse Stadium pitch in Salthill on Sunday last that he and his teammates would have such a comprehensive victory over favourites Galway when he was lifting the Nestor Cup at the end of the game.

Playing with the wind the Rossies jumped into an early lead and this was a lead they were never going to relinquish right to the end of the game. Ciaran and his brother Diarmuid were tormenting the Galway backs and their performances led to this magnificent victory. It was a fabulous day for the Murtagh family as their brother Brian was also on the panel making their parents Andy and Breda very proud parents indeed. Another local man David Rooney, son of Gerry and Emily Rooney was another of the local contingent on the panel. Sunday was a very proud day for the families, the St. Faithleach’s club, Kevin Mc Stay and his management team, the Roscommon senior team and county board. We congratulate them on their magnificence and look forward to them going from strength to strength in the All-Ireland series.

Traditional Music Night change

Clarke’s bar has not only has local notoriety but its notoriety is international for it Wednesday night Traditional sessions. It is widely acclaimed as having the best traditional night – every Wednesday – the entire length of the Shannon. When you go along on a Wednesday night and see and hear the calibre of the local talent you cannot be impressed by the quality.

The Leinster Fleadh Ceoil takes place all this week in Ballymahon until Sunday next and Clarke’s bar has been selected to host one of the evenings of traditional music. To facilitate this the Wednesday night session for this week only will switch to this Thursday night 13th July. A great night will ensue and this promises to be a most memorable night not to be missed.

Return of the Sand Beds

For a great number of us growing up in Lanesboro swimming in the Sand Beds was one of great childhood memories each and every summer. Swimming with sand under our feet and walking in the water through sand, it was just like being at the seaside and we enjoyed it as if we were the seaside. We flocked to the area once the swimming season began and there was so many of us swarming the area it remains a terrific memory. The honeycomb featured layer of rock leading to the water was always mystifying as we made our way to and from the water and it is a wonderful sight and today it holds the same awe.

Recently the Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op cleared away an overgrown area on the shoreline of the Shannon and the famous Sand Beds were reborn. It is as it was a wonderful area and the new seating in site only further enhances the beautiful Sand Beds area.

You may ask where is this area I write about and how accessible is it. As your go through the car park and continue past the harbour making your way to the gate that is the entry to the Commons North walkway. Just inside the gate on the right-hand side is the famous Sand Beds. You will see the clearance where the work was done by the Co-Op and this work further enhances the area around down around the Shannon and add greatly to our growing amenities and attractions. Pay it a visit, enjoy and celebrate the rebirth of the Sand Beds.

Death

The area was saddened to learn of the death, following a short illness, of Bertie Mc Dermott, Cloontuskert on Friday 30th June. Bertie was predeceased by his wife Bridget. Bertie, a native of Kilglass, spent his working life with Bord na Mona and for a number years following his retirement he was working with Larry Leavy. Bertie was a very warm and friendly man and always had the cheery word. He had a warm personality which endeared him to everyone that came to know him. Bertie’s passing will leave a great sadness in the hearts and minds of those that knew him. His remains reposed at the home of his son Thomas and daughter in law Rachel in Kilglass. He remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary Ballyleague for his Funeral Mass on Sunday 2nd July after which he was laid to rest alongside his wife Bridget in Cloontuskert cemetery. They are looking to those who hold music, singing lessons, dance classes, sporting groups, cycling and walking clubs, Leisure groups and arts, crafts and skills to contact. The idea is to allow the mature foreign students to mingle with any of the above groups so that they get the feel for our ways of life while learning and improving their abilities in English.
