Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 17th July 2017

Triathlon Success

The Lanesboro Triathlon Clubs Two Provinces took place last Saturday and Kidathon on Friday. Once again it was a wonderful success and a fantastic sight. It is truly amazing how well organised this club is and the way they run the event year on year. This year, judging from the results sheets, there were clubs representing a remarkable 27 counties of the 32. There were individuals not affiliated to clubs and perhaps the other 5 counties were represented by these contestants. It just goes to show the reputation of the Lanesboro Two Provinces Triathlon that they can attract participants from so many counties.

Friday night the annual Kidathon took place with 125 entries taking on the swim, cycle and run and everyone enjoying themselves and the comradery was a sight to behold.

Entries for the senior event on Saturday stood at 650 and the club had to close entries at that such was the demand for this race. The day was dull, overcast and breezy thus making the swim testing in choppy waters, the cycle was down wind on the outward trip but on the turnaround, it was straight into the wind and the road run took a new route turning down David and Joan Johnston’s roadway and back out to the finishing line at the harbour beside the car park. The road run took the new route due to the reposing of the late Albert Gill at his residence on the Rathcline Road and a mark of respect to the Gill family who are always great supporters of the Triathlon race day.

Following the race there was food in the marquee, on the banks of the Shannon, for all the athletes and Brian Ross supplied the music which by all accounts everyone enjoyed and appreciated.

When you consider 650 entries, their supporters and the locals attending it meant that there was over 1000 people at the banks of the Shannon. It was a tribute to Lanesboro Triathlon club how comfortably they dealt with such a large number of people. The way the club can get so many stewards out on the day and cover every aspect of this three-pronged race shows a great ability in the art of logistics. It must be said that the day could not be as successful as it is without the support of the Gardaí from Lanesboro, Longford and Roscommon. The day commenced with all stewards and workers being offered breakfast in the Parish Hall for their working day ahead.

The club must be congratulated on another hugely successful day for the Lanesboro Triathlon Club.

For the record, in the Super series event the first man home was Darren Dunne in a time of 58min.41sec and the first lady home was Elizabeth Carr. The National series winners were Maruisz Olejniczak and Amy O’Keeffe. The Aqua Bike race was won by Bjorn Ludick and the Try a Tri was won by Cian Noone.

Last, but not least, we would like to thank all the sponsors whose generous donations help us put on such a top-class event.”

Race Day Full

Such has been the interest in the Bernard Keane SuperValu sponsored Rathcline GAA club Race Day at the Galway Races on Monday 31st July that the club had to stop taking bookings. The day each year proves to be very popular and enjoyable hence the great demand. There are still people looking to book their places but alas it will not to be this year. The Galway Races are legendary and the Rathcline Race Day is beginning to develop a legend of its own.

Death

Thursday last 13th July was a very sad day for our community when news broke of the sudden death at his residence on the Rathcline Road of Albert Gill. Albert Gill for as long as I can remember was a man of great integrity and a man whose roots and great love were deeply imbedded in his native parish of Rathcline. He wanted the best for his community and he was a man who always sought progression in everyone and our community. Albert was a teacher in Lanesboro Vocational School and he retired from teaching when he was at Roscommon Vocational School. He was a man of great vision and he used it to great effect when assisting students and locals who sought his advice as a Guidance Councillor. Albert was a great narrator and a wonderful character. He was a loyal and true friend as many people can attest-he was a great family friend. A sign of the popularity was that his passing was mourned by so many people in our community both young and old. Albert never afraid to speak his mind and when he did people listened. When summing Albert up you can define him as a tremendous human being and a wonderful friend. He will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure to know him. Albert gave wonderful dedication to the Rathcline club and he will be remembered as great player for the club – the club gave him a guard of honour as he was removed too St. Mary’s Church. Indeed, my first and lasting memories of Albert Gill was when himself, his brother Mickey and Mickey Hyland were the trio from the ‘country’ who were outstanding on the Rathcline team of the time.

The attendance at the reposing of his remains at his home, at the removal of his remains to St. Mary’s Church on Saturday and again at his Funeral Mass bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held. Following his Funeral Mass on Sunday Albert was laid to rest in Cashel cemetery.

To his wife Mairead, sons Quentin and Michael daughters Aoibheann and Amy, brother Fr. Mickey, Connecticut, USA, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Championship Begins

Friday night next 21st July will see the renewal of local rivalry in Mc Gann Park, Kenagh when Rathcline take on Cashel in the first round of the Longford Intermediate Championship at 8pm. This should be a close and exciting encounter and it would be great if you could be in attendance to encourage our team to what we hope will be a victory. Good luck to Kevin Hanley, his team management and panel.
