Ard Ollamh na Fleadh Award

Aughaloughan native and son of Vera and the late Jim Donlon, Padraig Donlon will receive the Ard Ollamh na Fleadh or High professor award at this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann gala dinner this week.

This award is one of the highest accolades that one can receive from within Comhaltas Ceoltóirí na hÉireann and it is an award so richly deserved by Padraig.

Padraig from a family steeped in Irish music showed from a very early age his displayed his   prowess and great love for Irish music and was winning awards from a very early age. Padraig grew up in a home where his mother Vera, late father Jim and sisters Teresa and Nuala were all accomplished musicians and he was surrounded by the wonderful talented musicians that were in the Rathcline and Cashel parish area at the time. Sessions were held throughout both parishes and the skills learned and developed served him well for all those years since the days of his youth.

Down through the years Padraig has won a host of All-Ireland medals in many aspects of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Padraig moved to Dundalk many years ago and the mention of his name to Louth people always brought glowing responses as to the excellent work he was doing with and for Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

This recognition is nothing less than Padraig deserves and we would like to congratulate him and his wife and four children, his mother Vera, his sisters Teresa and Nuala on this fabulous honour. I am sure that the many locals that played with Padraig during the many sessions locally are also basking in the success of this very accomplished man.

This is a fabulous achievement for Luke and we would like to wish him every success in his debut and we look forward to him featuring at bigger and greater profile events as his career flourishes into the future

Monster Festival Outstanding Success

The firing of a flare on Friday evening 4th August signified that after 25 years of waiting the Lough Ree Monster was on its way back to Lanesboro following its quarter of a century absence. It was indeed a wonderful sight to see the Monster emerge through the ‘cut’ and making its way towards the bridge accompanied by the Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club. There was a huge crowd along the banks of the Shannon to welcome the Monster back. The arrival brought with it a wonderful excitement for the weekend ahead and the weekend did not disappoint.

The music throughout the weekend David Kiernan, Cliona Hagan and her band, Painted Skies, Natty Wailer, Katie Gallagher, Mike Denver and his band, Reprisal and IE/DC did not disappoint and created wonderful vibes throughout. The kiddies were royally entertained with their disco in the barn on Friday and again on Sunday where James Flaherty had fun and games all afternoon. All in all, the entertainment was there to suit everyone throughout the weekend.

Sunday night was farewell to the Monster as it was time to depart and return to Lough Ree for another year. For those watching along the banks of the Shannon saw that the Monster was reluctant to leave and headed toward shore a number of times before finally succumbing to the call of the lake. The firework display was a fitting send off to the Monster and the huge crowd were treated to a great firework show sending off our Monster. The firing of a flare was the final sign that the Lough Ree Monster had finally reached its resting place and was safely home in the waters of Lough Ree.

Lest we forget John Kenny’s play ‘The Lough Ree Monster’ which started the week off in a very unique and excellent way – it was a marvellous occasion with the successful coming together of the Newtowncashel Drama group and locals volunteering to play a part in the play. Videos of the play are for sale in O’Brien’s at a cost of just €15.

There were many groups and individuals that contributed greatly to the success of the Lough Ree Monster Festival and their work will be acknowledged. It was a fabulous community event for our community and all those that came to join us throughout the weekend.

This was a weekend that will be long remembered and it goes to show following last year’s Taste of the Lakelands International Food Festival the two International fishing festivals and now the Lough Ree Monster Festival and play that our community has a lot to offer. The organisers have shown that our community can and will bring many big and successful events to the area and long may they all thrive.

Parking in and around the Church

Once again, I have been asked to write about the parking in the vicinity of St. Mary’s Church at Mass times. There should be parking from the top of the Church View Road down past Ferguson’s gate only on one side of the road, this is to allow large vehicles and emergency vehicles access up and down the road.

On the Green, there should be parking on only one side of the road and there should be no parking blocking pathways down to the road. There are a number of people in the area in the vicinity to the church that need to have the footpath access cleared and it is very important that all parking is done to allow easy access and exit to and from the Green.

Annual Pilgrimage

The annual pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday week 27th August with the bus leaving Ballyleague hall at 7am. The bus fare is €10 and the Lough Derg Island contribution €40. For further enquiries, you should phone Mary at 043-33 21969
