Lanesboro Ballyleaague notes Monday 28th August 2017

      Lanesboro Ballyleague

Death

It was with great sadness and regret we learned the death at Mullingar General Hospital of May Nelson, Trilacroghan, Curraghroe on Sunday 20th August. May was a quietly spoken lady with a gentle manner and she was respected greatly far and wide. May was a nurse in England before returning home where she worked at the Sacred Heart Home in Roscommon until her retirement. She had a wonderful interest in and was a woman who was a master crafts woman at knitting. In her spare time she loved doing crosswords where she enjoyed the mental challenge. She was an excellent poet and was writing poetry right up to the very end. Most of all May was widely known for the cup of tea. In difficult times and good times she would always recommend first of all a cup of tea. May always found that during a cup of tea the realisation of the required answer always emerged. Her warmth of nature and soft words will be fondly remembered by all of us that had the pleasure to know her.

Her remains reposed at Mc Hugh’s Funeral Home on Wednesday before her removal to St. Mary’s Church, Ballagh. Following her Funeral Mass on Thursday her remains were laid to rest in Kilgefin Cemetery. To her husband Malachy, sons John, Malachy and Anthony daughters Mary, Anne and Eileen relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

All changed around

Over the summer holidays there were many changes to the teaching of the primary school students in two of our local primary schools. The greatest changes were in Fermoyle Primary School. As we reported prior to the school closing for the summer break Denis Connerton retired from teaching. Denis has been replaced as Principal by Patricia Boyce who was formerly principal at Scoil Náisiúnta Mhuire, Lobinstown, Co. Meath. Padraig Connerton having served 13 years in Fermoyle will also have left Fermoyle to take over as principal in Cloontuskert National School. Padraig will replace former Principal Andree Nice Aonghusa who served from 2006 to 2013 in Cloontuskert. Sean Mc Cormack who in recent times qualified as teacher and spent some time in Lanesboro Primary School has been appointed to Fermoyle. Fermoyle will also receive a new resource teacher this year where Marian Lynch has been appointed to that post. Rory Leonard has been appointed to the staff at Lanesboro National School.

We wish everyone the very best in their new positions and look forward to an excellent school year for both teachers and pupils alike.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

The Lough Ree Golfing Society were in Highfield Golf Club for Jackie Mc Donnell’s Captains Day. They were very lucky with the weather, when they hit a “lull” with sunshine for almost the whole day.

The course was good, with the greens a little bit slow!!!!. The turnout was excellent with our best numbers for 2017. Jackie’s array of prizes was very well received.

The Society was delighted for the winner of the Captains Prize Jimmy Flanagan being one of the Lough Ree Golfing Society’s founding members in1985 and also the Society’s first captain.  Well done Jimmy.

The men’s results are as follows: 1st Jimmy Flanagan 32pts (10), 2nd Martin McAllister 32pts (9), 3rd Mick Brennan 31pts (8) and 4th Fintan Jordan 31pts (7).

The front nine was won by John Martin, the back nine by Paul Taylor, and nearest the pin by Joe McGrath, the visitors prize was won by Tom Colcannon.

We had a close contest in the ladies, with Bernie Taylor 1st on countback over Antoinette O’Donnell with Ursula Burke 3rd.

The next outing is to Portumna GC on September 20th which everyone is looking forward to, it’s such a great course.

Hospice Barbeque

The barbeque held at Clarkes bar recently in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice was very successful. The sun shone, all prayers for a good day were answered and everyone had a fabulous evening.

A special thanks must go to Keith Brady and Kepak for the food, Bernard Keane SuperValu for the buns and rolls and the local musicians that provided such great music throughout the weekend – Brian Ross, Jimmy Hussey, Joe Duffy, Paul Ross and Robbie Chalmers. There were many donor of spot prizes – too many to mention, Pat Murtagh donated his car for the auction and James Kenny got it ready and passed the NCT.  Thanks also to Tom the Chef and Terry for the use of his barbeque and also to Sean Moran and his team for all their help. A word of thanks to Chris Cullen who as always was to the fore in lending a hand.

Finally, the organisers would like to thank everyone that attended and supported the evening. A sum of €1,660 was raised and that money will be added to the Anthony Healy card drive fundraiser and every penny will go to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

The group would like to thank everyone for their magnificent support.

Lough Ree AC

Let us start by congratulating all the participants who represented Longford and Roscommon at the Community Games Finals (50th anniversary) at Abbottstown, Dublin at the weekend. Indeed, to qualify for the occasion was an achievement in itself. Well done to all. Special mention to Christian Donlon who came home with a medal for 3rd in the Boys U10, 200 meters, what an achievement at national level! Indeed “the apple does not fall far from the tree” as his mother Carol was no slouch in her day. She put a lot of effort into preparing him for the race. As my information of the day is skimpy, I dare not mention other names only to say that the Lanesborough U16 Project team who represented Co. Longford, was also victorious taking the gold medal for their category. More detailed information may be available elsewhere.

Minor club

Final replay

Following the previous week’s drawn game it was back to Pearse Park for the replay of the Minor Football League Final on Wednesday evening and another tussle with Northern Gaels. The game was in direct comparison to the drawn game where Northern Gaels provided a storming finish to draw the game. This time our lads found themselves well back but in fairness to their fighting spirit they never gave in and were rewarded with a rousing 6-8 to 3-13 victory. It was a fabulous victory for the team especially when the victory was over one of the most iconic club over the past number of years. A very well done to all the players and their team management on their magnificent win

Trip to Croke Park

Sunday last a number of our minors gathered to make the trip to the All-Ireland semi-final between Dublin and Tyrone. The trip had the added bonus of the U17 All-Ireland Final where a number of the players were able to support their class and schoolmate Michéal O’ Donnell who was playing with the Roscommon U17’s. It was a fabulous occasion for our young players and their dream coming home was to go back in time to come with club and county and bring home a title.
