The Mens club will take to their travels once again this time they will travel to Dublin to visit Croke Park and the Skywalk. The Croke Park museum is well worth the visit alone but to get the skywalk and overlook the city of Dublin is a wonderful bonus to the trip. The trip will take place on Thursday week 2nd November. Annette Coffey does great work in organising the Mens club and all the trips they go on, some of the places they have visited are Áras an Uachtaráin, Guinness Storehouse, Arigna Experience, Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum to mention a few. Tri Club AGM
The Annual General Meeting of Lanesboro Triathlon Club for 2017 is set for Friday week 3rd November at 7pm in the Club Rooms, Lanesboro Co-Op Hall.
All members have been sent an email with a nomination form, motion form and meeting agenda. Members should return the nomination form and any motions to secretary@trilanesboro.comm no later than 5pm on Fri 27th October. Fidelma (Chairperson), Niall Mulvihill (Secretary), Sinéad (Social), Frank (Treasurer) and Jim (PRO) have said they are willing to remain in their current roles, but don’t let that stop you from making your own nominations!
Other non-executive positions to be filled on the night shall include:
– Race Director 2018
– Training Officers
– Club Gear Committee
– Social Committee
It is extremely important for the clubs continued success in the future to have a large turnout at the AGM. It would be great to see new faces coming forward to take a position on the executive and bringing the club onwards and upwards.
Calling all bakers
Rathcline GAA club is holding a festive fund-raising Bake Sake and Cake Demonstration event on Sunday 10th December in the parish hall.
We know there are many fabulous bakers within the parish and outside and the club is looking for your support. Create your ideas, prepare for baking and remember the date 10th December. You can bake anything you want be it buns cupcakes, rock buns, brownies, scones, brioche, doughnuts, biscuits, chip cookies, cakes, puddings, loaves, cheesecakes, muffins and breads or anything else you wish to bake.
This promises to be a fun filled afternoon for everyone and it is an event to be baked for and not to be missed. Further details will be published next week
Volunteer & Designated Drivers
There is a campaign underway for every village and community to have a legally regulated Community Car Service throughout Ireland. This new group will hold a meeting in Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon on Wednesday week 1st November at 3pm. If you are interested to find out more feel free to go along. The aim of the group is to help combat rural isolation and to help end the needless road carnage due to alcohol.
Caretaker Required
A caretaker is required for St. Mary’s Hall. This is a CE scheme and it is 19½ hours per week. For further information you should contact the local DSP office or call Sean at 086 1427 143.
Walking time nearly here
Your donations to the Sponsored Walk on Bank Holiday Monday in aid of the Lough Ree Monster Festival are continuing to grow and I would like to say a very big thank you to every one of you that have sponsored us so far.
The walk is a huge undertaking Lanesboro Bridge to Athlone Bridge and your support is truly massive. Those walking (so far) and cycling are Caroline Gray, Angela Knowles, Gerald Farrell and Joe O’Brien.
There has been an interest from people inquiring about walking all or part of the journey. Our response is “feel free to join us on all or part of the way” we would love to have you. We would ask that you take a sponsorship card and help in securing sponsorship – cards available in O’Brien’s.
There is a great interest in the walk especially the distance and my ability to walk the full journey – shur what else would you be doing on a Bank Holiday Monday only go for a little walk. Come along be a part of it and join in making it a walk of craic and chat and mentally shortening the challenge of the walk from Bridge to Bridge all 40km of it.

Well done to Stephen Tobin, Rathcline Road who recently successfully completed the Trek to Everest Basecamp Nepal on 10 October 2017 reaching a height of 5364m above sea level.

Use the Defibrillator
Being able to use of the defibrillator means you have acquired lifesaving skills. Names are now being taken for the training in the use of the Defibrillator. The training is free and training will soon commence. If you wish to take part in the training or need to upskill your use of the defibrillator, then you should leave your name into Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop or phone 086-2460840 or 3321107
Outstanding Success
On Sunday last Lanesboro Tidy Towns held a Breakfast Morning in the Parish Hall. It was a new initiative and the committee went forward with some trepidation as to how the morning would go. They need not have had any concerns as the entire community totally rowed in behind the idea making it an outstanding success. The hall was practically packed from start to finish and it proved to be a great fundraising event for the committee. Well in excess of 300 people turned up for breakfast and everyone went home happy with their breakfast. The response to the call for chefs, waiters/waitresses, those to do the washing up and also those to do the many other jobs and businesses to sponsor food, milk etc. was amazing. In the shop on the way down two ladies told me it was their first time to volunteer for something in the community and they were absolutely delighted and feeling wonderful about coming on board. So many people gave so much of their time on Sunday and it was truly a tremendous community effort from all the volunteers to all that came along to have breakfast. Everyone must be commended for all their hard work and support and it shows that we are a super community.
DVD’s for sale
With the evenings staring to lengthen and if you are searching for something to watch over the longer evenings and nights you could do no worse than buy the DVD of the play ‘The Lough Ree Monster’. DVDs are available in O’Brien’s costing €15and you are assured of a great couple of hours with a local cast.
World Bronze Medals
Lanesboro’s Martial Arts and Karate club had three of its members Eabha Kenny, Keisha Carty and Elizabeth Clyne selected to represent Ireland in the IKU World Championships. It is a wonderful achievement for the club that it has three young ladies capable of being selected to represent Ireland at World Championship level.
Keisha Carty and Elizabeth Clyne both won bronze medals and Eabha Kenny performed excellently in her grade and was unlucky not to be in the medals.
We would like to congratulate the three young ladies on their selection to the Irish team and their performances in the World Championships in Kilkenny last weekend. We would also like to congratulate their sensei Kevin McKenna who is the instructor at Lanesboro Karate club.

The AGM of the minor club took place on Friday night last in the clubhouse. A big number turned up for the meeting. There were many changes to the executive and we would like to acknowledge all the excellent work done by those stepping down. Their dedication to the minor club was remarkable and they left the club in a great place. Thank you.

Art and Craft Camp
Halloween Art and Craft camp for kids will commence on Tuesday 31st Oct until Thursday 2nd November from 10am – 2pm in St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro. ‘Babble and Books’ Baby Book club, a free weekly baby book club for parents/carers and children aged 0-2 years continues on Wednesdays at 10.15am. Sessions include songs, stories, early literacy/language games followed by a cuppa and a chance to chat with other families!
Preschool Drop In and Sing-along continues on Wednesdays at 12.30pm. Pop in to the library on your way home from preschool to join the group sing-along and choose a book with your friends.
Lanesboro Book Club will meet on Friday 27th October, 11am-1pm. Their book of the month is “The Watch House” by Bernie McGill. All are welcome. If you would like to read any of the club’s selections, call to the library to request the title.

Tourism Co-Op Draw
The numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tidy Towns lotto on Tuesday 17th October were 3, 5, 13 and 28. There was no winner of the jackpot of €9,000. The winner of the €50 prize was Tiernan Hanley, Corrigeen and the three €20 winners were Phil Hanley, Barnacor, Geraldine Farrell c/o Mags and Johnny and Mary c/o Mags.
Drug & Alcohol Prevention & Treatment Support Services
Following the formal launch of the Extern MYDAS (Midlands Youth Drug & Alcohol Support) Project & MQI DATS (Drug & Alcohol Treatment Support) Project a briefing of briefing and information sessions is scheduled to be delivered in Longford.
The session will outline what each service offers, how to access/refer to the services and also provide an opportunity to meet key staff working in each county from both projects.
Those from the Community, Voluntary and Statutory Sectors are invited to attend the information and briefing sessions which will take place in the Longford Arms Hotel on Tuesday 7th November from 2.30pm to 4pm.
Rathcline GAA
Leinster Club Championship: On Saturday last, we welcomed Wexford Intermediate Champions Kilanerin to our town and club grounds in Clonbonny. Kilanerin has the legendary Mattie Forde leading their attack and had won their championship final only the previous Sunday.
The day was far from ideal with Storm Brian trying to play a significant part in proceedings. Despite the rain and wind both teams played an entertaining game on a pitch that was in remarkable good condition despite all the rain that fell Saturday morning.
Kilanerin proved too strong for our lads and their guile and experience seen them through. Nonetheless it was a great experience for our younger players and we are sure they will all have learned a lot from this game.
We wish Kilanerin the very best of luck in the rest of the Leinster Championship, they seem well equipped to go a long way in the competition.
Final: Following our great win over Ballymahon in the Patsy Reilly semi-final we will now take on Sean Connolly’s in the final the weekend after next. Further details next week.
U21: Our Under 21 team will take to the field next weekend, see fixture on Facebook or club website, when we will take on Cashel/Killashee most likely in Dunbeggan. Your support for the lads would be great.

You should consider refereeing?
Have you ever thought of taking up refereeing? Refereeing is open to men and women from the age of 18 upwards. It is something that brings great satisfaction and allows referees to progress up the ranks to whatever level their dedication takes them.
The image of referring being a solitary occupation does not bear anything close to reality. You are a member of a team of referees in the county where there is great comradery. You also will have your own umpires that leaves you part of another team and a leader of that team.
Now, there are wonderful opportunities for young referees to climb the ranks within Longford and indeed in the Leinster ranks also. Now is the time to be giving it serious consideration.
Longford has a proud record of supplying referees to Leinster and the National Refereeing panel for many years and this opportunity is waiting for you with the right application.
