BT Young Scientist Success
2019 got off to a winning start for Lanesboro Community College as they achieved wonderful success at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS last week when all three of their projects were award winners
Conor Lyons looked at how the cost of playing for your club impacts on your family life, free time and even the days missed from work due to injury. All involved were delighted when he was awarded 2nd place in the Social and Behavioural category.
Leah Farrell’s project was highly commended by the judges for designing an online tool for calculating CO2 emissions and for applying this model to analysing the carbon footprint of our diets. Food for thought!
Orla Lyons’s study on the benefits of a short maths programme to help students improve their numeracy was awarded the ‘Highly Commended’ accolade and singled out as a ‘policy changing study’.
Well done to all involved and thank all those who supported the students with their projects; teachers, parents and the various organisations and individuals that gave up their time and expertise so freely.
Going for Reprint
The wonderful publication Sliabh Bán has now sold out in all shops. Such was the sale of the book that there is a complete sell out and the great news is that the book is going for a second print having a second print. Sliabh Bán the book of history of the area will be back on the book shelves within the next three weeks. You will see it here when the book is back.
LCC Enrolment nears closing.
The closing date for application forms for enrolment in 1st year in September 2019 is Friday 1st February at 1:00. The Green
Thanks to those that have already sent me photos.
Sometime ago I recorded the 64 houses on the Green and those that I could remember and find out that lived in what house since the early 50’s. I am now looking for photographs from the families that lived there from the start right up to the present day. Family, presentations, work pictures or sporting events right up to this current day that involved anyone that lived on the Green everything and anything please. If you can email them to me joea@iol.ie or drop into the shop with them where I will scan them and return them immediately. If you did not live on The Green and know people that did can you tell them I am looking for photographs. Death
The untimely death took place on Sunday 13th January at the ICU, Galway University Hospital of James Mullooly formerly Kilteevan and formerly Tullyvrane. James just 39 years old was taken ill last summer and was found to have a very rare form of virus. He was a tall and strongly built and for such a strong young man to be struck down was a great shock to us all. James fought hard for life in the intervening time and his untimely death shook us all to the core. He had a warm personality and his smiling face and welcome always disarmed the coldest of hearts. James was married with two young children and lived in Kilteevan. The attendance at the reposing of his remains in Smyth’s Funeral Home Roscommon and again at his Funeral Mass and burial was the largest seen for many a long year. To his wife Joanne, sons Jack and Billy, father Peter, mother Mary, sisters Dara, Margaret and Laura, the extended Mullooly family and wide circe of friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
James was laid to rest in his native parish Rathcline Cemetery following his Funeral Mass in St. Joseph’s Church, Kilteevan.
Nurse Donlon, your memories
Nurse Donlon’s time in Lanesboro was legendary for all of those that remember her time as the district nurse and her shop at the bottom end of Main Street beside Paddy Kenny’s garage. What are your memories of Nurse Donlon and can you put them to paper or on computer? If you have any memories, then Stella in the library would love to hear from you. it is hoped that the older generation amongst us that have so many wonderful memories and it would be great to put them to paper and send them to Stella as soon as you can.

AGM
The AGM of the Rathcline club will take place in the clubhouse in Clonbonny on Friday 15th February at 8pm. If you have an interest and would like to be part of our club come along to the meeting where you will be made very welcome. As the club moves back into the senior ranks, they would like to welcome parishioners and former players to get behind the club and team and help drive all forward.
New Defibrillator Course
A new Defibrillator course will take place in the very near future and the organisers are urgently seeking many new people to take the opportunity of getting trained in the use of defibrillators. As this is a down time it is important that all clubs and organisations on both sides of the bridge encourage their members to attend and get trained up.
Rarely a day goes by in a workplace, sporting events or in public places that a person’s knowledge in the use of the defibrillator in not required hence the great need to have all area and events covered with people with the required knowledge.

A little food for thought. There are many roles/tasks that need to be filled/completed in each and every association and club in the community- remembering that there is a great link up with those not affected by the county/parish divide and the others that are affected. There is something for everyone, just mention to the club or association that you are interested in helping. Help is a vital component to the continuation of all our associations and clubs, and you should be helping to grow our community as one in your chosen group.

Play in St. Mary’s Hall
‘And thank You’ is a new play written and performed by the ever popular and star man Seamus O’Rourke will come to St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro, on Saturday 9th March at 8.30pm. This is a production much sought after, and it was a very lucky thing that the Minor Club got their ‘spake’ in on time to ensure we would be fortunate enough to have it. Tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s costing €10. Tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s and to book your tickets phone Martina 086-3858934. The play is being hosted by the Shannon Gaels Minor Club.
The following is a synopsis of the play: A play about an ordinary man living in rural Ireland who gets saved… Saved from a life of pub talk and prophesising. King John O’Sullivan used to be able to drink fifteen pints without having to piddle, now, it’s every nine. Going to the Gents so often can wear a man out. The story is told by the Reverend Thaddaeus Clancy and O’Sullivan’s two sons, Larry O and Martin. The sons run the family shop while Daddy, the King of McKenna’s Bar makes up the rules. It’s a story of hard work and success and dangling. There’s bad driving and ice hockey and there’s falling down. When the ‘Divel’ starts to gnaw, the kingdom will fall.
Community Celebrations
The club will host a Dinner Dance on Saturday night 16th February where the club with celebrate its community links and honour the panel of 2018 that retained the Intermediate Championship. The Celebrations will take place in the Longford Arms Hotel.
The Dinner Dance is always a wonderful community celebration night out and it should also bring back for the night the many ex-players and supporters of the club for a great night of reminiscence and revelry. Music on the night will be supplied by the hugely popular Rhythm & Sticks who will add greatly to our celebrations. Tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s.
The club looks forward to a huge number attending on the night and create a great parish and community night out.
Community Games
Well done to all of our young participants who took part in the County Community Games Draughts Competition last Saturday, in Killoe National School.
We were well represented with five teams at U10, U12 and U14 age levels. They all battled really well in their respective competitions.
Congratulations to our U14 team who managed to win out their competition by the narrowest of margins, to a very strong Ballymahon side.
They are now Longford County Champions 2019 and will go forward to represent the County in the Leinster competition.: Kieran O’Dowd, Cormac O’Dowd, Shane Gavigan, Conor Farrell, Ronan Farrell, Fionn Crossan.

Marriage
The wedding took place at the Church of St. Charles Borromeo, Leixlip, Co. Kildare on Monday 31st December of Fran Deffew son of the late Noel and Bridie Deffew, Rathcline Road and Joann Keenahan, daughter of Geraldine and Larry Keenahan, Leixlip, Co. Kildare. Bestman was Nevan Deffew brother of the groom, and bridesmaid was Jenny Keenahan sister of the bride. Pageboys were Cillian and Liam Deffew nephews of the groom. Flower girls were Cora Deffew, niece of the groom and Ella Cullen, Tessa Grogan and Eva Greene all nieces of the bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Philip Corcoran. The wedding reception was held in Confey GAA club, Leixlip, Co. Kildare.

On Monday night last, the draw took place for the weekly 50/50 draw. This week our winner was Mary and Geraldine c/o SuperValu which was a great the 50/50 for the first time. The winning envelope was worth a wonderful €352. Thanks to Sheila for her continued support of the draw and maybe next week it will be you.

The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery draw took place on Tuesday morning last on the Co-Op office. There was no winner of the €15,000, jackpot and the jackpot for this week, will now rise to reach and the jackpot has now reached its maximum of €15,000. The numbers drawn were 6, 10, 12 and 15. The winner of the €50 prize was Patsy c/o Mags, and the three €20 winners were Fiona c/o Mags, Mary Hussey, Lough Ree Park, Ballyleague and Kathleen and Teresa c/o SuperValu.

Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club
Lough Ree sub aqua would like to start off by thanking everyone who took part in and those who attended the club Christmas swim which took place on Christmas day at 12:30PM. There was a great turnout and it would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the support from both club members and the local community. The first training exercise of the year took place in Portrun harbour county Roscommon on Saturday the 12th of January. This event included a 1 KM fin from the harbour to a specific location situated 1 KM along the lake, a similar exercise is planned for Sunday the 20th of January. Special thanks to all club member who acted as support for these events.

The aim of this 4 week programme is to encourage
joint play between a parent and their toddler. Activities will include
soft ball games, movement to music and parachute games. These activities
will develop fundamental motor skills, spatial awareness, manipulative skills,
co-ordination and balancing skills and develop a positive attitude to physical
activity. The programme will involve a trained and garda vetted sports
tutor attending and leading a fun, physical activity session for 1 hour a week.

The under 12s play their first game in the Major Division

Gaels United provide the opposition for the under 13s in a
first round Premier Division Shield game in Drumlish at 11am on Saturday.
The under 14 team are at home to Gaels United on Sunday. Kick
off 2pm.
Gaels United also provide the opposition for the under 16
team in Drumlish on Sunday at 12.30
The under 9s will be taking part in a Blitz at Ballymahon
Astro on Saturday with a 11am start. Other teams involved are Ardagh and the
host team.
Entry forms for The Last Man Standing fundraiser for the
Astroturf Football Pitch fundraiser will be distributed within the next week.
The previous LMS generated a lot of interest with Enda Naughton from
Ballygar the overall winner.
Alzheimer Café
The Longford branch of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland will open their first ever Alzheimer Cafe in Longford Credit Union ltd, 50 Main Street, Longford on Wednesday 30th January (7.00pm-8.30pm). ThisCafé will take place on the last Wednesday of every month at the same time and location. Alzheimer Cafes provide a warm and welcoming space for people with dementia, their family and friends and social and health care professionals to meet, exchange ideas and learnings. The topic for this month is ‘Living with Dementia’ with guest speaker Gerry Farrell Counsellor / Psychotherapist Sligo. This is free of charge and there is a car parking facility at the rear of the building. Anyone who is affected by dementia is welcome to come. It is a social evening with tea, coffee & scones being served. The Alzheimer Cafés are organised and led by a mix of organisations, professionals, carers, people with dementia and volunteers interested in the area. Leinster Final
Congratulations to Ballymahon Secondary School on qualifying for the Leinster Schools Senior Final following a very hard earned. Having come through the Shannon Gaels and some are still in the underage section we are delighted to have such a strong delegation on the panel with 8 of our players. We wish them the very best in the final.
Book Reprint
The Rathcline Bakes recipe book has gone for reprint. As there will only be a further limited supply anyone that has not got their book should do so before all the books have gone. This is a great book and most definitely well worth having with a great number of baking recipes. The cover of the book has been designed by local artist Jack Casserley and the book includes a recipe from Kieran Glennon a 2-star Michelin Star chef with Irelands leading restaurant Patrick Guilbaud’s which makes this book a collector’s item. Defibrillator
The club needs people that are interested in helping out the club by completing the defibrillator course to take place in January. The need for people to have training done in the use of the defibrillator is essential at all grades especially with all the games and training in Clonbonny. We look forward to a good number of parents of the underage club and supporters and officials from all our clubs to give their names and phone numbers to the minor (Seadna) or senior (Cathal) secretaries or to Martina O’Brien at the corner shop.

Ireland Lights Up: Well done to all our members who took part in the official Ireland Lights Up walk on club grounds last Thursday, walks continue every weekday evening at 7pm and it’s a great way to get active and connect with people within the community.
