Quirky Quiz is Back
Yes, the Lough Ree Monster Festival Quirky Quiz that proved so popular last year will take place this coming Friday night next 13th April simultaneously in the Yacht Bar, Clarke’s Bar and Adie’s Bar. You pick your pub as the questions will be beamed live into the 3 pubs for this very unique quiz.
The idea of the 3 pubs is quirky and unique and the question will also be quirky and unique.
Grab you teams of 4 together and come along for what will surely be another fabulous night in Lanesboro.
The proceeds of the night will go towards the staging of this year’s Lough Ree Monster Festival from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August. You are guaranteed to have a great night of fun and laughter. Teams of 4 costs €40 and we would encourage everyone, local clubs and associations to get teams together and come along and support.
Blood Donor Clinic
With the continuation of the bad weather the amount of blood presently on hold is perilously low at the moment. You are asked to make yourself available at the blood donation clinic that will take place in the Abbey Hotel Roscommon on Tuesday week 17th April and the following two days Wednesday and Thursday 18th and 19th. State of Roadway
As road through Lanesboro and Ballyleague comes under the National Roads Authority (NRA) and not the county council it is high time that the NRA took the time to come for a drive down our direction.
The roadway entering Lanesboro and Ballyleague needs upgrading and repair work needs to be done but the NRA are allowing the Main Street of Lanesboro and Ballyleague to become nothing but a dirt track with the road sinking in many parts on both sides of the bridge.
As we go into the tourist season and with many people coming to Lanesboro/Ballyleague for the river and woodland walks and Sliabh Bawn for walking it is a disgrace that our visitor should have to encounter something that can be described as a bog road though Lanesboro and Ballyleague. The work being done on both sides of the bridge in an effort to enhance our community by both Tidy Towns groups is being rendered useless by the state of the roadway – it is not the beauty of Lanesboro and Ballyleague that will be remembered but the state of the roadway through the town.
I don’t know if the NRA will even see this note, but I hope it will be brought to their attention.
Blood Pressure Check
Such was the response to the blood pressure check in St. Mary’s Parish Hall recently they have decided to run it again to allow for those not able to have had the check done the last time. It will take place on this coming Friday 13th April in St. Mary’s Parish Hall from 11.30am to 12.30pm. This is your opportunity to avail of this great service.
Cake Sale/Coffee Morning
Claire Costello, Killinure along with her friends and class mates Tara Nerney, and Erica Fortune are embarking this summer on a five-week teaching programme in Kolkata, India during this coming summer.
Kolkata was formerly known as Calcutta has a population greater than Ireland’s with a population of 5.1 million people.
Claire and her friends will volunteer and work closely with the teachers helping educate the most vulnerable children in the area.
On Sunday week 15th April in St. Mary’s Parish Hall there will be a Cake Sale and Coffee Morning from 11.30am to 3pm. It would be great to have a huge crowd attending to support Claire and the girls.
All products will be home produced and baked. There will be treats available for Vegan, Gluten free and chocolate lovers.
Death
The news was greeted with great sadness and regret on Tuesday last 3rd April when news broke of the death of Carmel Casey, Carrowstrawley at her home. Carmel, nee Dowd, was from one of the oldest and most respected families in our parish. Carmel was a teacher of Irish and History in the Convent of Mercy, Lanesboro for a number of years. She then moved to the Mercy Convent Secondary school in Ballymahon where she spent many happy years until her retirement. Carmel always encouraged her students helping them to reach their full potential. She was a devout lady with a terrific devotion to her husband Jimmy and her family Caitríona, James and Ciara, to her Catholic faith where she was a daily communicant and to her friends. Carmel was a woman of great sincerity and a great neighbour with a discreet manner. Her genuineness and sincerity were clearly evident in the way she lived her life and her awareness of the need to help anyone in their time of need. Carmel’s passing will most definitely leave a great void in the hearts of so many people as could be judge at the reposing of her remains at her home in Carrowstrawley and again at her Funeral Mass.
Carmel’s remains reposed at her home in Carrowstrawley on Wednesday and on Thursday last her remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro for her Requiem Mass. Following Mass, her remains were laid to rest in Rathcline cemetery. To her husband Jimmy, daughters Caitríona and Ciara, son James, sisters Bridie, Anna, Máirín, Olive, relatives and so many friends
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the late Cyril D’Alton, Stockport, Cheshire, England and formerly Kilrooskey who died suddenly in England on St. Patrick’s Day Saturday 17th March. Cyril was a regular visitor to Lanesboro where he came to stay with his late sister Maura Harold and her husband James. Cyril was a very popular figure in the town. He had a real warmth and his passing will leave sadness in the hearts of all that knew him. His remains reposed in Smyth’s Funeral Home on Tuesday 10th April before his removal to St. Mary’s Church, Ballagh. Following the Mass of the Resurrection on Wednesday he was laid to rest in Derrane cemetery.
Local Footpaths
Many people have asked me to mention the current state of the footpaths and walkways through the town due to the amount of dog soiling on the footpaths. All dog owns are required to clean up the soiling by their dogs but that seems to be lost on the few that do not do so. There is no place clear of this soiling, but I am told Church Road/Old School Road is especially bad. The number of dogs has grown greatly over the past few years and we ask those that are not cleaning after their dogs to start doing so and let out footpaths return to clear of dog soiling once again.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Carmel O’Shea, The Green and Teresa and Pat Reilly, Rathcline, on the death of their brother in law Kevin Kelly in Shropshire, England recently.

Lough Ree Monster Meeting
The weekly meetings in St. Mary’s Hall on Wednesday night at 9.15pm. We would love to have a great divergence of people from Cashel, Killashee, Kilgefin, Rathcline, Ballyleague and Lanesboro.
Rolling Stones
In what, without doubt, will be the Concert of the Year in Croke Park, The Rolling Stones will roll back the years and perform a wonderful concert on Thursday 17th May.
Rathcline GAA have a very special draw taking place for that concert where for €2 only you could be the winner of the draw for those 2 most valuable tickets in the luxury Premium Stand.
The draw will take place on Saturday 12th May in Clarke’s Bar and make sure you have your tickets in this draw. Tickets are on sale in all shop, bars and from committee members.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Elizabeth Hensey, Weekfield, and her daughter Carmel on the unexpected death of their husband and father Sean Hensey on Friday 6th April. Sean was formerly of Kinnity, Co. Offaly before settling in Weekfield. His remains reposed in Smyth’s Funeral Home on Monday 9th April before being removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Tuesday Sean was laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery.
Fleadh Cheoil Longfoirt
Fleadh Cheoil Longfoirt will, for the first time, be held in Newtownforbes on 27, 28 and 29 April. The main competitions take place on Sunday 29th in Scoil Mhuire NS Newtownforbes. Competitions in the céilí bands, grúpaí cheoil, rince ar an sean nós, rince Céilí and Seit will be held on Saturday 28th April while the Comhrá Gaeilge, scéalaiocht and storytelling will start the weekend off on the Friday evening at 4.30pm. Former Resident Dies
On Sunday 1st April one of our former residents passed away at Milford Nursing Home Limerick. Noel Connaughton always remembered locally as Dolie passed away after what was a courageous battle with illness over the past five years.
Dolie no matter where he went over the years became a very popular figure and for any of the past years his home was in Thurles where he lived with his wife Josephine and daughter Bernadette. For all of us that knew Dolie we will be saddened by his departure. The attendance by present and former Lanesboro people at his removal from Egan’s Funeral Home, Thurles and again at his Funeral Mass in The Cathedral of the Assumption, and burial in the local St. Patrick’s cemetery, Thurles, bore testimony to the highest regard in which Dolie was held locally. He was a man with a great love of life and indeed lived it to its fullest.
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Josephine, daughter Bernadette, brothers Mickie and Josie Lanesboro and Seanie, Newbridge, their families, relatives and many friends.

On the closing day of Organ Donor Awareness week Saturday 7th April, the Longford branch of the Irish Kidney Association raised €1,491 in Lanesboro.

Tourism Co-Op Draw €11,300
Last Tuesday 3rd April the Lough Ree Tourism Co-Op held their weekly lottery draw for a jackpot of €11,300. The numbers drawn were 2,13, 14, and 29. There was no winner of the jackpot and the roll-over for this week stands at €11,400. The winner of the €50 prize was Kathleen D c/o Mags and the three €20 prizes were won by Sean Connaughton, Curraghroe, Kevin Murray, Lanesboro and Ralph and Bridie c/o Mags. The co-op really appreciates your continued support.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to J.T. Mullen, his wife Bernie and daughters Louise and Regina, Cloontuskert on the death of JT’s mother Bridgie Mullen. Bridgie formerly of Cornadough, Newtowncashel for the past number of years live in Cloontuskert. Bridgie was a warm and friendly lady and her warmth will leave a great sadness in her absence to everyone that had the pleasure to know her. Her remains reposed at the residence in Cloontuskert on Wednesday before being removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague for the Mass of the resurrection on Thursday. Following Mass, she was laid to rest in Forgney Cemetery.
Ballyleague Tidy Towns AGM
On Tuesday next 17th April Ballyleague Tidy towns & village renewal will stage its rescheduled AGM at St Faithleach’s clubhouse at 8.30pm.
This meeting will discuss a range of issues of importance to ALL local residents such as
- the state of the footpaths and roads in the village – implications of traffic going through our village from proposed ESB Lough Ree Power plant changes, b) the proposed village renewal work at Ballyleague marina – north harbour approved last September , c) safety issues at Ballyleague national school , d) proposals for new community park sculpture area in village , e) significant problems with public lighting in the village, f) road-sweeping in Ballyleague, g) new town / village app update, h) tourism signs plans for Ballyleague , i) county council housing estate issues in Ballyleague , j) shortfall in funding for Xmas lights structures in a Ballyleague, k) ongoing Tidy towns projects and wild flower meadow sites in Ballyleague and much more …

Former Resident Passes Away
The death took place on Wednesday last 4th April of Jim Fallon, Artane, Dublin and formerly of Lismacmanus, Lanesboro. Jim was from a large family which was one of one of our oldest and respected families in our community. The Fallon name is synonymous with our parish and while many of the family moved away such was the love of their native soil that Lanesboro and Lismacmanus was always home. Jim will be sadly missed by his family friends both local and in Artane. We would like to extend our sympathy to his wife Mary, daughters Marie and Joanne, his sisters Phil Chalmers, Longford Road, Veronica Manning, Dublin, their families, the extended Fallon and Shea families, Lismacmanus and Blenavoher and many friends.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club
U15 success: Following on to the great win of the U13s in the Leinster League the U15 team were not to be outdone. They travelled to Kildare to take on the local St. Kevin’s side in the Leinster League semi-final. The game went right down to the wire and we emerged 1-point victors. Well done to the management team and panel of Aaron Oates, Diarmuid Conlon, Eoin Farrell, Eoin Kinlan, Gary Hand, Jason Mc Dermott, Matthew Hawes, Rory Maguire, Ryan Casey, Tadgh Nerney, Harvey Myhill, Kevin Tansey, Óisin Kenny, Duileach Ryan, Shane Killian, Cian Farrell, Cormac Casey, Cillian Cox, Jamie Hagan, Aaron Kenny, Niall Chawke and Callum Gordan.
Evening Out: The date has been set for the upcoming Minor Club’s night of entertainment in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. There will be great variety on the night built around a hilarious comedy sketch. The sketch is loosely based on the Fr. Ted theme and it is an evening not to be missed. The date has been set for Saturday 2nd June. Games Off: Our minor game scheduled for Saturday in Clonbonny was called off due to Clonbonny pitch been closed. Our U14 gave a walk over in the Féile Plate in Kenagh on Thursday evening last.
Fixtures: Our U14 team will travel to Ardagh on Tuesday to plat St. Patrick’s Óg. On Thursday our Juveniles will travel to Kenagh to play St. Dominic’s at 7pm
