Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Triathlon Weekend

Each year the Lanesboro Triathlon Club host the Two Provinces Triathlon and each year the club host a series of the Super Series. Each year the preparation and organisation of the races becomes better and better and the race goes off extremely well..

Early morning Saturday the sun shone brightly to welcome the athletes to Lanesboro. The stewards were at their posts from 7am directing and helping everyone and registration was going on even at this early hour.

Almost 500 athletes had registered to take part in the Triathlon and it promised to be a wonderful sight.

At 11am the first of the competitors, the elite men, started their 750m swim which was followed by a 20k cycle to Scramogue and back and then undertook a 5k run through the quarry and up to Harold’s cross and back to the finishing line in the bay area close to the small harbour. This race was ultra-competitive with only 4seconds separating first and second.

The Super Series ladies race was also ultra-competitive with only 2 minutes separating the first three ladies home.

In the male Sprint Triathlon first three home were separated by just one minute while the Ladies Sprint Triathlon the first three home were separated by less than one minute.

The huge attendance was thrilled with the excitement of the tight finishes and also seeing family and friends making it to the finishing line in this gruelling race.

The whole event was a massive success for the Lanesboro Triathlon Club and the organisation of the entire event was a massive success for them. The club must be congratulated for bring such a massive event to our community and also for running the event in such a professional and efficient manner.

The Kids Triathlon took place on Friday evening with a massive 120 young people taking part in a swim, cycle and run. This was a marvellous occasion seeing so many young people making gigantic efforts to complete the course. There was a wonderful excitement all evening and all the young people and their parents must be congratulated for making the event such a success.

The feel-good factor in the town throughout the day was wonderful. To know and feel that such a huge event can be ran year after year and getting better each time is a credit to everyone involved for creating a fabulous memory for everyone that came to Lanesboro for the Two Provinces Triathlon.

To the Lough Ree Triathlon club and the many stewards both on an off the water, the many organisations that backed up the committee, to the Gardaí and the massive number of stewards that gave of their time you are a credit to your community and each one of you are the reason this wonderful occasion is run so successfully.

Congratulations

Earlier in the year the Abbey Theatre issued a call for young people to help programme a two-way festival at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. It was the first time this austere theatre made such a call and it was a wonderful opportunity for the five young curators. The aim of the programme is for the five new curators to set a new festival in 2019.

Luke Casserley, son of Con and Yvonne Casserley, Clonfower was one of the lucky young people to be selected as one of the young curators. He has been deeply involved and hugely successful in the Arts both locally with the Backstage Theatre and also nationally over the past number of years and he is rapidly rising to the very top of his chosen field. This can be seen by the acknowledgements of his talent by the many awards he has received. We would like to congratulate Luke on his recent appointment and we wish him huge success in his future exploits in the Arts field.

Death

Over the past two weeks the town has suffered great heartbreak and this past week we were stunned and shocked to learn of the sudden death of David Farrell, Knock on Monday last 9th July. David, only 27 years old was a young man with the whole world and a bright future ahead of him. Since his very early days David was a very personable and warm young man. He had the smile to disarm even the most serious situation. David as he got older developed into one of the finest young men in our community. His warm welcome and impish smile was feature of David which endeared him to everyone. A short time ago David was diagnosed with a strain of cancer that was to spread rapidly through his body. He refused to let it get to him and as was his strength of character vowed to fight it to the very end. He may have been a slight man, but he had the fight of a lion and he fought his illness gallantly until it took him from us on Monday last. It was one of our blackest days ever.

The attendance at the reposing of his remains at his family residence on Tuesday and Wednesday last and again at his Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church on Thursday was testimony not only to the esteem in which he was held but also to the different generations of people he affected. Following his Mass Cremation took place in the Lakeland’s Crematorium, Cavan

To his father Gerry, mother Teresa, sister Melissa, partner Emma, godson Dylan, relatives and many many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Healthcare Monitoring in Your Home

Shannonside Digital Skills are putting together a new plan for a pilot scheme in the Lanesborough Ballyleague area in the coming months.

The scheme will allow 20 people who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, COPD or other chronic illness to decide themselves to have their critical daily medical readings monitored by the use of new technology in the comfort of their own home through the use of broadband. These readings will then be monitored in conjunction with a specialised nurse service so that any healthcare readings of concern will be brought to the attention of the person immediately and action proposed.

This pilot project is now only at developmental stage. Participation will be purely on a voluntary basis for each person (10 from Ballyleague and 10 from Lanesborough) and each person who volunteers must firstly fill out a questionnaire and consult with their own GP.

This is the first pilot of its kind in the republic of Ireland and to find our more information please contact Debbie at (086) 223 0971 or Adrian at 04333 21734

The pilot will not start until the initial questionnaire has been successfully completed by all 20 people.

To seek a questionnaire please e mail:  shannonsiderenewal@gmail.com

Rathcline GAA.

Championship: Sunday last we started out in our bid to retain the County Intermediate title we won last year. The opening game was against our near neighbours Killashee.

After the driest spell in many a long year our championship opening game happened to be played in continuous rain. This was not to deter us in our efforts and after an entertaining game we emerged victors on a scoreline of 3-11 to 1-8.

This was a great start to our campaign which will continue on Saturday evening next in Cashel. We will take on Kenagh at 7pm and we look forward to a great number making the short trip to cheer on the lads once again.

Richard Prior

Throughout the Leinster U17 championship our very own Richard Prior was a shining light on the Longford team performing greatly during each match. Unfortunately, they lost out to Kildare in their semi-final, but they made amends on Saturday last when the played a very fancied Dublin team in the Shield Final in Pearse Park. Richard and his team mates got the reward that was effort all thoroughly deserved when they beat Dublin it the Leinster Shield Final.  Well done Richard on a great county season.

Gerry Reilly Tournament

The intercounty U16 Gerry Reilly tournament is currently taking place and Longford are in a strong position to compete in the final. We have two representatives on the team namely Briain Casey and Seadhna Ryan. We wish them well in the latter stage of the competition and congratulate them on their fine performances so far.
