Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 24th September 2018

Lough Ree AC

It is safe to say the cross-country season is upon us starting with the Longford Primary Schools on Sat next 29th September in Moyne.  Our training runs in Clonbonny are going well, the weather has been kind and the numbers participating increasing each week and we are now up to 40 runners.  Parents and newcomers are welcome; start time is 6.30pm, meet at Clonbonny GAA grounds, the runs will continue until the time changes.   The club would like to offer condolences to the Casey family Rapparee Hill on the death of PJ.  PJ was involved in the club in the early years with all of his family competing in various events and indeed his daughter Carmel caused quite a stir as a distance runner in her day.

Taste of the Lakelands

The Taste of the Lakelands will take place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October. There will be a huge array of producers on site where the quality of producers in the Lakelands area will be presenting their quality products to all and sundry. This is without doubt an unmissable event in the calendar of Lanesboro and Ballyleague. A lot of planning and hard work is going into the preparation and presentation of the programme and it is hoped this work will be rewarded with bumper crowds on each day.

Separately on Friday 5th the Lough Ree Distillery will officially launch their distilled Gin. Further details of the launch will follow.

Some of the main attractions on Saturday 6th will be the School Cookery competition, Catherine Fulvio at 3pm and demonstrations with Matthew from the Grow Truck Vegan, the Comfort Wholefood Company. There will be live open-air music on the stage beyond the duck pond from 3pm with the rising star David Keenan and Mick Flavin

On Sunday Kevin Dundon will be the star attraction at 3pm with Asian and Chinese chef who will entice the oriental taste to the uninitiated. On stage from 3 pm will be rising Country Music star Ciaran Rosney and his band and Camillus Egerton

This year there will be a charge upon entrance to the site of €5 per adult where children will go free. This is a small charge for such a wonderful weekend and we hope that the attendance will far exceed the attendances of previous years.

Championship Final Replay

On Sunday last Rathcline played an intriguing draw in the final of the Intermediate championship. Having led from start to the final moments it looked as at the end of a tough hard game victory was to be ours. However, with injury time running out an Ardagh/Moydow free went all the way into the net.  It looked all over for us, Shane Kenny’s free broke into the hands of Iarla O’Sullivan who the opportunity to slot the ball over the bar with the final kick of the game.

It is all back to Pearse Park on Saturday next for a 5pm throw in. We hope for a huge crowd from the area to go and cheer on the team and hopefully bring back the Gerry Hennessy Cup to Lanesboro for another year.

We wish manager Liam Tully, mentors and Rathcline panel the very best of luck

A 100km Charity Cycle in aid of the Irish Cancer Society took place on Saturday September 15 around Lough Ree. Over 50 cyclists took part. The main sponsor was Pat McDonnell Paints, Athlone. Db Cycles sponsored tyres & tubes, Sherry Fitzgerald sponsored the water & Macs Shack sponsored the lovely sandwiches. There was a tea stop in Lanesboro Parish Hall.  Special word of thanks to Tom & Evelyn Rooney, Brendan Rooney & Mairead Rooney who organised the hall and served the tea & coffee. Thanks to the Hall Committee for the use of their great facility. Thanks also to Mark on the motorbike, the stewards & the lads in the vans.  A great day was had by all.  This was the first cycle sponsored by Pat McDonnell Paints in this area and such was the interest in it, the company may consider making it an annual event.

Championship Final Replay:

Last Sunday finger nails were chewed right down to the butt. This was a game not for the faint hearted. Leading from the 1st to the 60th minute and a tough hard game seemed to be going our way until a hail Mary free landed in the square and finished in the net leaving us a point in arrears. We wondered if there would be enough time to launch another attack and thankfully there was and Iarla O’Sullivan won the breaking ball from a Shane Kenny free and pointed with the last kick of the game.

Next Saturday we return to Pearse Park for the replay. The game will have a throw in time of 5pm. We look forward to a massive crowd cheering us on Saturday and bring the Gerry Hennessy Cup back to the parish for another year.

We wish manager Liam Tully, mentors and panel the very best of luck.
