Wonderful weekend ahead
Below you will read of two magnificent events happening in Lanesboro over the weekend that will bring many visitors to Lanesboro. The excellent Tidy Towns results of last week (see below) highlighted the tremendous work being done by the Tidy Towns committees in Lanesboro, Ballyleague and Cloontuskert will greet the many visitors and show what a tremendous and beautiful community they are entering.
Sling Shot Gin Launch
The Clancy family, Sheila, Peter and Michael will official launch Sling Shot Gin on this Friday, 5th October where the gin and its ingredients, including fresh Irish mint, will be revealed. This is a realisation of much hard work and preparation for what we hope will be an outstanding success for Lough Ree Distillery.
The gin is the first in a line of planned Lough Ree spirits that will include whiskey, vodka, liqueurs, poitín, and fruit spirits.
Sling Shot is being distilled in a custom-built distillery, while construction of the Lough Ree Distillery and visitor centre will commence by early October, ahead of its official opening in mid-2019.
The launch will take place this Friday night at the Taste of the Lakelands at 7.30pm. As places ar limited you are asked to contact to book a place at the opening – email info@lrd.ie or phone 043 33 51250.

Taste of the Lakelands
It is unbelievable the event that attracted throngs of people to Lanesboro is back with us again. It does not feel that a year has passed since the last Taste of the Lakelands. The festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday next 6th and 7th October.
There will be a big and varied array of producers on site where the quality of producers in the Lakelands area will be presenting their quality products to all and sundry. This is without doubt an unmissable event in the calendar of Lanesboro and Ballyleague. A lot of planning and hard work is going into the preparation and presentation of the programme and it is hoped this work will be rewarded with bumper crowds on each day.
On Saturday 6th events will commence at 12 noon with Clancy’s Sling Shot Gin and the Lough Ree Distillery followed at 1pm with chef Kwanghi Chan who for over 30 years has worked as a chef, creating revered dishes, and the evolution of trends in Asian cuisine within Ireland and Southeast Asia. At 2pm local and award-winning chef Stephen Dowd will impart his wealth of cooking knowledge. Catherine Fulvio will take to the stage at 3pm. Catherine is known in Ireland and beyond for her many Cookery TV series, her food writing for national and international media and for her many cookbooks. At home she runs Ballyknocken house and Cookery School in County Wicklow and the day’s events will finish with Barry John Crowe from award winning butchers Crowe’s Meats Cavan.
There will be live open-air music on the stage in the park area with the rising star David Keenan opening proceedings at 3 followed by the wonderful sounds of Mick Flavin at 4pm.
On Sunday events will open at 12 noon with the Grow Truck where founder Matthew explored plant-based cooking and the positive effects of plants and its positive effects on the body and mind. At 1pm Lanesboro Community College students will be doing a cooking demonstration. At 2pm Fiona Egan from Cloughan Farm and Cookery School with de demonstration her successful means of cooking with her excellent teaching skills. At 3pm world famous Kevin Dundon an Irish celebrity chef, television personality and author, known for featuring on television series such as Guerrilla Gourmet and Heat will communicate the many skills that helped him through his career to the recognised chef he now is. At 4pm the festival will close on a hot note with a chilli eating competition
The open-air music on the stage in the park will commence at 3pm where Camillus Egerton and his band will open proceeding and they will be followed by the newest star on the country scene Ciaran Rosney.
There will be a Dog Show at 1pm on Sunday 7th at 1pm beside the duck pond.
The Craft Village will be ongoing throughout the weekend in St. Mary’s Parish Hall Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm each day at different stages throughout the weekend there will be a HB Ice Cream Party, Kidzone entertainment, Mid Roscommon Vintage Group displaying their vintage models.
This year there will be a charge upon entrance to the site of €5 per adult where children will go free. This is a small charge for such a wonderful weekend and we hope that the attendance will far exceed the attendances of previous years.
Beginners Sett Dancing Classes
Have you an interest in learning to Sett Dance? Beginners Sett Dancing classes will continue in St. Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse, Ballyleague every Tuesday at 8.30pm.
Dancing is proven to be excellent for the mind and the body. Come along – bring a friend and have plenty of fun. For information contact Mairead 0868546433.
Championship Final Replay
All roads led to Pearse Park on Saturday last when the replay of the Intermediate Final took place between Rathcline and Ardagh Moydow. The first game was enthralling with Rathcline scoring the last point to draw the game. Saturday last was no different with Ardagh Moydow coming from behind to draw the game after 70 tough minutes of football. Off to extra time we had to go and while the evening was getting colder the excitement of the game kept us warm as it was touch and go right through to the final seconds of the game where we had to come from behind to once again draw the game and send it to a third game.
This was a tight and tense game throughout and while we had many chances over the 115 minutes to win the game the spirit of the two teams surely deserved another day. The replay is fixed for Sunday week 14th October in Pearse Park at a time yet to be decided.
New Opening Hours
Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union has new revised opening hours for the business. As and from 4th October the Credit Union will open the following hours. Tuesday and Wednesday 9.30am to 3pm, Thursday 9.30am to 5.30pm, Friday 9.30am to 7pm and Saturday 9.30am to 1pm.
This is our own Credit Union and it should be used as often as possible by everyone in our community and those within the area covered by the Credit Union. Be local and bank with your local Credit Union.
Memorial Mass
Local man John Scally, formerly of Anrattabeg passed away in Vilnius, Lithuania on Sunday 23rd September. John was predeceased by his parent Tom and Annie Scally. He is survived by his son John, John’s mother Ernesta, his sister Caroline, brothers Kevin and Donal, relatives and friends. His Memorial Mass for the happy repose of his soul will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon, on Saturday October 6th at 11am, followed by interment of his ashes in Cloontuskert Cemetery.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
Breakfast Morning returns
The hugely popular Lanesboro Tidy Towns Breakfast Morning will return on Sunday 21st October in St. Mary’s Parish Hall from 9am to 1pm.
Last year was the inaugural staging of the event and it proved to be a massive success. This year we hope there will be a bigger crowd supporting the Breakfast and the wonderful work being done by Lanesboro Tidy Towns. Tickets, priced €10, are on sale throughout the town for those that wish to support and cannot attend on the day. There is also the option to pay your €10 on the door.
50/50
On Monday night last, the draw took place for the weekly 50/50 draw. The winning name this week was in the name of two young men B & T Donlon, Ballyleague. The winning envelope was worth €330. Congratulations to Blain and Tommy on their marvellous win and thank their mother Claire for her continued weekly support of the 50/50
The club thanks everyone for their continued support and encourage everyone to persist in your support as your name will surely be drawn out soon. Tickets are on sale in local shops and businesses throughout the town at €2 each. Alternatively, you can by the pink ticket for the year for just €100 and have 2 free weeks. Fr. Ted Comes back to Town
The hugely popular play Fr Ted Comes to Town will come back to St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Saturday 13th October. The previous staging of the play was such a huge success and public demand was such that the play has had to be staged once more.
Apart from the magnificent show another feature of the night will be the half time draw where there will be an amazing €500 in prizes.
The sale of the tickets is going very well, and the remaining tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s. There is a limited supply you are advised to get your tickets as soon as possible to ensure your seat at their great night out. The show will commence at 8.30 with doors opening at 8pm. Rathcline and Recipes
Rathcline GAA Club will once again be holding their Annual ‘Cake Fare’ on Sunday 9th December in St. Marys Parish Hall.
On that day we intend to launch a collection of recipes gathered from around Rathcline parish. If you would like to have your favourite recipe or indeed an old family one included in the publication, simply handwrite or type it up and leave it in to Joe or Martina O’Brien or you can contact Pat Connerton on 0861617501 or Michelle Connerton on 0861699466. Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mags and Patsy Glasgow, Clonbonny on the death last Tuesday 25th September of Mrs. Margaret Lennon, Doory, Ballymahon, mother of Mags.
Death
The entire area was deeply shocked and saddened when the news broke of the sudden and untimely death on Tuesday 18th September of Ciaran Farrell, Derrygeel. Ciaran had a wonderful way about himself and warm nature. He was an employee of the ISPCA where he was a valued member- he had a very special and gentle way with animals hence the admiration in which he was held. Ciaran, as many of his contemporary’s attested to was wonderful company and a lad with great sense of humour and adventure. Ciaran had that playful smile that disarmed even the coldest heart. He was a quiet young man but there was never a moment he was not available to lend his assistance to anyone in their time of need. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his father Pat, mother Pam, brothers Martin, Paul, Colm and Damian, their wives and partners, uncles, aunts’ relatives and a huge number of grieving friends.
Ciaran’s remains reposed at Glennon’s Funeral Home on Monday 24th September. His remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church on Tuesday for the Mass of the Resurrection. Following Mass Ciaran’s remains were brought to Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan for cremation.
€13,900 Tidy Towns
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery draw took place on Tuesday morning last. There was no winner of the €13,00, jackpot and the jackpot for this week, will now rise to €13,900. The numbers drawn were 1, 13, 21 and 26. The winner of the €50 prize was Marcellka Kavanagh, Rathcline Road and the three €20 prizes were won by Mike c/o Mags, Martini c/o Mags and Maureen Donlon c/o Market.

Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends, both local and Latvian, on the sudden death of the late Janis Pastars, Cloonadra. John a native of Latvia formerly lived on the Green is survived by his daughter Sintija to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
Mens Club
All the places on the bus have now been booked for the Mens Club visit to the Titanic Centre in Belfast on Monday week 15th October. This is one of the many trips this well-travelled Mens Club make during each year.
The club meets every Wednesday in Clarke’s Bar every Thursday from 12noon until 1pm. If you have never been there and would like to get involved just drop in to Clarkes for a cuppa and a chat for the hour once a week.
Tidy Towns Results
On Monday last the results of the 2018 Tidy Towns were announced. Lanesboro took the biggest jump rising from 277 to 288 points this year and getting closer to breaking the magical 300-point mark. Ballyleague continued their upward point progress with a six-point jump from 301 to 307 points and Cloontuskert also continued up the scale when the also went up six points from 319 to 325.
The three communities continue to do fabulous work from one end of the year to the next and there is no doubt with the vitality in each group it will not be too long before one of our Tidy Towns groups will surpass the 339 points achieved by this year’s winners Listowel.
A special word must go to all the committees for their total dedication and their aim to make their own the most beautiful in Ireland hence the comments on a daily basis from strangers about how beautiful our community is. It is incumbent on everyone in all communities to play their part and help make our area winners – play your part by volunteers just a few hours each and every week.
Lanesboro Library
Exhibition – History of Music in Co.
Longford
Lanesboro Library are hosting an exhibition on
the history of music in County Longford.
The exhibition traces the county’s musical
heritage and includes details of some influential musicians, including pipers
and fiddlers.
One of those was Fiddle master Thomas ‘Blind’
Kiernan (who died in 1887). He taught several people to play and they, in turn,
taught others, and that chain continues to this day.
Also included is the Granard Harp Festival,
which began in 1781 and was the first of its kind in Ireland.
The exhibition also looks at Longford musicians
who were well-known in the US such as Frank Quinn and Packie Dolan.
The exhibition runs for two weeks during library
opening hours.

Vandalism
The
unbelievable wanton vandalism of a year ago revisited our community last week.
Johnny Hanly along with his young grandson and granddaughter had erected
Rathcline posters wishing the team well in the County Final when last week
someone found it necessary to knock down all the signs. This is wanton vandalism
and the person(s) that thought it was a smart thing to do has a warped sense of
community spirit. I am afraid the laugh is on them as the signs have gone back
up and the community is more than ever behind the families in the area that
have suffered this dastardly deed. The culprit(s) should hang their heads in
shame. To paraphrase the saying ‘you can crush our signs, but you can’t crush
our spirit’.
Duck
Derby
Cloontuskert N.S. are holding a Duck Derby Sunday 7th October at 3pm on the Shannon (Ballyleague side). Ducks cost €5 each. There are great cash prizes and lots of other prizes to be won. Also, ducks will be available to buy during the Food Festival and on the day of the Duck Derby. We hope that you will come along on the day.

Lough Ree Athletic Club
Saturday last was the date for the Annual Co Longford Primary Schools Cross Country hosted by Longford AC. Moyne Community School was the venue and the event was very well organised, a credit to Longford AC. There was a massive turnout from primary schools in the county, unfortunately the same cannot be said for the local schools but the match may have affected participation. However, we had three stalwarts from Fermoyle school in the 3rd/4th class run and they acquitted well themselves in an event that they will still be eligible for next year, unfortunately they were short a fourth person to make up a team. Well done to Mikey Sorohan, Óisin Dillon and Callum Farrell who had their first cross country run ever on a very tough course. Kiltoom is the venue for the county Roscommon event on Thursday next 4th Oct and we hope for a better turnout. The road runs continue each Tuesday in Clonbonny at 630pm.

Lough Ree Golfing Society
The Lough Ree Golfing Society’s outing to Carrick on Shannon Golf Club was very enjoyable, with the weather holding up very well. The scores returned were very impressive on a tricky course, with 38 points from Timmy Glynn securing first place. The next and last outing of 2018 is to Strokestown Golf Club on Friday 12th October at 11am It is hoped that there will be a big turnout for the last outing of 2018. The race for golfer of the year will go down to the last day, with 4 players in contention.
The results from Carrick on Shannon were 1st Timmy Glynn 38 pts, 2nd Tony Patton 34pts and 3rd Mick Brennan 33pts.

Ballyboro FC
Following their defeat of Tuam Celtic in the first round of
the Connacht Cup, Ballyboro Under 12s were drawn away once again in the second
round. Their opponents were the highly regarded Mayo outfit Westport United.
With one minute left the Ballyboro lads were ahead 2-1, due to a brace of
brilliant goals scored by Christian Donlon. As a result of a controversial
refereeing decision Westport goaled. No goals were scored in extra time and the
issue was decided by the dreaded penalty shootout. Here Westport prevailed by
the narrowest of margins to secure victory. While defeat was their lot the
Ballyboro boys can be proud of a superb display in which every player gave
their all. Team: Ronan Cox, Anthony Cox, Jack Casey, David Cox, Euan Cullen,
Christian Donlon, Ethan Slattery, Ben Murphy, Daniel Hogan. Subs, Luke
Johnstone and Blaine Donlon.
Ballyboro play Renmore at home on Saturday at
2pm in the first round of the under 13 Connacht Cup.

Championship Final Replay:
Last Saturday we travelled to Pearse Park in high hopes that we were going to overcome Ardagh/Moydow in this replay of the final. We were fully aware from the first day that Ardagh/Moydow were going to put up a stiff challenge, but it was one we felt we could overcome on the second occasion. Things were looking good with 5 minutes to go with scores particularly hard to come by but we allowed Ardagh the two scores necessary to make their comeback and to bring the game into extra time. Extra time from start to finish was very tight and tense and there were very few scores but with just seconds to go Ardagh/Moydow scored what appeared to be the winning score but as with the drawn game we never gave in and a free from an awkward angle on the wrong side for a right footed kicker showed the mettle of Shane Kenny who shot over the equaliser which brought the game to a draw.
The replay will take place on Sunday week 14th October at a time yet to be decided.
Fr Ted Comes to Town:
The exceptional play Fr. Ted Comes to Town written by Colin Fayne will make its return to St Mary’s Hall, on Saturday week 13th October at 8.30pm. Such was the popularity of the first staging of the show the Minor Club had to stage it once again. There are a limited number of tickets still available and you are advised to get your tickets early.
An added feature to the magnificent show will be the half time draw where there will be €500 in prizes. All club members and their friends are invited to come along and enjoy a great night’s entertainment before going to Pearse Park on Sunday to support Rathcline.
