Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 8th October 2018

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Rathcline and Recipes

The subcommittee organising the Rathcline GAA Annual ‘Cake Fare’ on Sunday 9th December in St. Marys Parish Hall is seeking your help in collecting recipes you may have and would like to share them. The idea is to produce a collection with all your recipes included and, on that day, it is intended to launch a collection of recipes gathered from around Rathcline parish and further afield.  If you would like to have your favourite recipe or indeed an old family one included in the publication, simply handwrite or type it up and leave it in to Joe or Martina O’Brien or you can contact Pat Connerton on 0861617501 or Michelle Connerton on 0861699466. There are surely a huge number of recipes handed down safely stowed away in presses, drawers and attics. Now is the time to dust them off and share them with us. Thanking you in advance.

Can you get your recipes to us as soon as possible as we hope to have the booklet available for the Cake Fare?

The club is looking forward to hearing from everybody and especially adding your recipe into the publication.

Thank You

I received the following note of thanks from the Clancy family following their huge successful launch of their Sling Shot Gin on Friday last. “The three of us, Peter Sheila and Mike and our team would like to thank the people of Lanesborough-Ballyleague and surrounding areas for their help and encouragement in getting us to the launch of our first product and for the depth of support shown to us over the course of the weekend. We are humbled and extremely grateful”.

Festival of Football

In the words of the song “Here we go again, we’re on the road again” Following the two tense and tight tussles that ended in draws the Longford Intermediate Championship will take place on Sunday next 14th October. We go with great confidence that this will be third time lucky for the team.  Ardagh Moydow are proving most resilient and a tough nut to crack but we are looking forward to Sunday and bringing the Gerry Hennessy Cup back to the parish of Rathcline. For the previous two games there has been great support for the team with former parishioners travelling from all sides of the country, from surrounding counties as well from all parts of the county. We hope that everyone is again looking forward to the third game and are preparing to make the trip to Pearse Park once again. We are looking forward to once again seeing another huge crowd supporting the team. We would like to wish the team and management the very best of luck on Sunday.

The game will be part of a wonderful triple header of finals and a feast of top-class football. It will be fabulous value for all GAA supporters. The triple header commences with the Under 20 A final at 12 noon, followed by Rathcline V Ardagh Moydow at 1.45pm and the replay of the County Senior Championship at 3.45pm. Where else can you find the three major championship finals taking place on the one day in the same venue?

Gets Better and Better

I have often spoken and written about what a fabulous place we live in and the events of the past few weeks allied to last weekend Lough Ree Distillery’s launch of their Sling Shot Gin and the Taste of the Lakelands on Saturday and Sunday reinforces what I have been saying, writing and believing. In the words of one visitor to Lanesboro at the weekend “Lanesboro is such a magical place and there is always something happening in it”. Last weekend in Lanesboro was one of those times where you knew you were in someplace very special.

On Friday night last, the Clancy family owners of the Lough Ree Distillery launched their very first product onto the market when the launched their Sling Shot Gin. The venue was one of the marquees being used for the Taste of the Lakelands. The venue was full to capacity for the launch. It was tremendous to see the local community come out in force to support Peter, Michael and Sheila and their families. The atmosphere was wonderful and MC for the night Joe Flaherty did a fabulous job regaling us with story of old about himself and the Clancy family along with many amusing asides.

The night set a standard and the Sling Short product in its eye catching blue and the merchandise was a sign of the quality of work and thought that went into the making of the Gin and quality of merchandise. Now that Sling Shot Gin is up and running we hope that the word will spread worldwide about the quality Gin being produced in Lanesboro. Good luck to Peter, Michael, Sheila and their staff for many years of successful business.

Saturday morning, we were awoken to bright sunshine as is now the norm for the annual Taste of the Lakelands Food Festival. Stalls and stands were being made ready from early morning and a huge number of visitors to the Festival started to arrive very early. The day continued to be bright and enticed record crowds for the first day. With master crafts people on stage during the day, plenty of sampling and attractions the day was an outstanding success. David Kiernan and Mick Flavin provided afternoon music fitting to their star recognition.

Sunday came to us with the first real touch of winter with a strong chilling the morning. We had hopes that the day would brighten up but alas we were to be disappointed. However, while the crowd was not that of Saturday the fare on the day was absolutely marvellous. As the day progressed the crowd grew larger and larger and a great deal of business was done, sampling and cookery demonstration took place in the main tent and each person was a revelation. The Chilli eating competition brought the tent events to a finish. Camillus Egerton and his band followed by Ciaran Rosney and his band provided great music bring the Taste of the Lakelands to a close for this year.

Full marks must go to Alan Horohoe and his team for staging such a wonderful event in Lanesboro once again this year. The hard work and endeavour really paid off.

Fr. Ted Comes back to Town

Rehearsals for the return of the hugely popular play Fr Ted Comes to Town are almost complete. A huge amount of work throughout the warmest summer in years such is the dedication of the cast and crew. It is a credit to everyone that the play is back so soon in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Saturday night next 13th October. The previous staging of Fr Ted Comes to Town was magnificent hence the call for the second staging. This is your last opportunity to see this wonderful play.

The club would like to sincerely Pat Deasy and his company Greenlight Pharmaceuticals for their most generous sponsorship of the play.

Apart from the magnificent show another feature of the night will be the half time draw where there will be an amazing €500 in prizes.

The sale of the tickets is going very well, and the remaining tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s. There is a limited supply you are advised to get your tickets as soon as possible to ensure your seat at their great night out. The show will commence at 8.30 with doors opening at 8pm. You can book your tickets by phoning Martina 086 3858934.

Ambitious Plans

The Committee of Cloontuskert Cemetery would like to thank everybody who contributed so generously to our recent Cemetery Sunday collection for the upkeep of the Cemetery for the coming year your generosity is greatly appreciated.  Our thoughts now turn to our next project which will be our last.  We hope to erect a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and the three visionaries it will be erected on the left-hand side of the front entrance to the old Cemetery to the height of the surrounding wall 48 inches. We do not have a time frame for its completion but would love to have it in place for next year, but that might be a bit too ambitious as we are just falling short of the estimated cost.

Anyone who wishes to inquire further about the proposed project contact any committee member – Sean Carthy, Johnny Malone, Peter Cox Frank Curley Pauline Brennan

Ballyboro FC

It was a very successful weekend for the club with all three teams in action victorious. Pride of place must go to the under 13s who recorded a tremendous win over Renmore in a second round Connacht Cup encounter. Inspired by a 5 star and 5 goal performance by Christian Donlon, the Ballyboro boys imposed their authority on the proceedings right from the start and emerged fully deserving winners on a 7-4 scoreline. Eoin Cox and Joy Trimble also found the back of the Renmore net. Team: Sam Glennon, Rory Carling, Jack Casey, Cormac O’Dowd, Josh Crawford, Conor Farrell, Christian Donlon, James Mimnagh, Joey Trimble, Eoin Cox, Rory Killian. subs: Luke Cullen, Jack Naughton, Fionn Crossan.
Many thanks to the ladies who served up a sumptuous meal for both teams in Ballyleague Hall after the game.
The under 12s got their league campaign off to a good start when they defeated Stonepark on Sunday. Ballyboro looked to have the game in the bag halfway through the second half but a late Stonepark rally made for a nervous few minutes before Ballyboro secured victory on a 7-6 margin. Scorers: Christian Donlon 4, Jack Casey 2, Euan Cullen 1. Team: Billy Murray, Anthony Cox, Jack Casey, David Cox, Ethan Slattery, Euan Cullen, Christian Donlon, Daniel Hogan, Ben Murphy. subs: Jack Beattie, Jack Brogan, Conn Maxwell, Luke Johnston, Aidan Kelly, Ryan Mimnagh.
The under 14s were also in fine fettle as they defeated Abbey Rovers 5-4 in their first league game of the season. The goals were scored by Jimmy Farrell (2), Ryan Byrne 1 Matthew Heneghan 1 and an og. Team: Luke Dowd, Bryan Mullooly, Ryan Byrne, Paul Byrne, Jack McGloin, Matthew Heneghan, Jimmy Farrell, Shane Ross, Ciaran O’Dowd, Briain Farrell, Christy Burke. subs, Conor Farrell, Cormac O’Dowd, and Christian Donlon.

Rathcline GAA.

Recipes for Rathcline

Rathcline GAA Club will once again be holding their Annual ‘Cake Fare’ on Sunday 9th December in St. Marys Parish Hall.

On that day we intend to launch a collection of recipes gathered from around Rathcline parish.  If you would like to have your favourite recipe or indeed an old family one included in the publication, simply handwrite or type it up and leave it in to Joe or Martina O’Brien or you can contact Pat Connerton on 0861617501 or Michelle Connerton on 0861699466.  Like the football it is “Minor, Senior, ladies and Gents”.  The club is hoping to collect a huge number of old recipes and if you can get them to us as soon as possible so that we can have the booklet ready for our Cake Fare. Looking forward to hearing from everybody and especially adding your recipe into the publication.

Championship Final Third Game

Next Sunday the Intermediate championship final will be part of a trilogy in every sense – our third meeting and part of a triple header. Our game is the middle game with a throw in time of 1.45pm. We must do it all again and we hope that this will be third time lucky. While we were in a position to win the previous two games we showed great courage and guts to come back to draw the games in the end. We hope that if we are ahead in the run in that we will push forward and win it. There is no doubting out quality, determination and guts and we have to raise our game that bit more to deny Ardagh/Moydow from spoiling our goal of winning back to back titles..

We are very grateful to the huge numbers of parishioners and former parishioners that are making the journeys to support the team. Your great support is needed once again on Sunday and we look forward to seeing you all back in Pearse Park.

Fr Ted Comes to Town:

The exceptional play Fr. Ted Comes to Town written by Colin Fayne will make its return to St Mary’s Hall, on Saturday week 13th October at 8.30pm.  Such was the popularity of the first staging of the show the Minor Club had to stage it once again. There are a limited number of tickets still available and you are advised to get your tickets early.

An added feature to the magnificent show will be the half time draw where there will be €500 in prizes. All club members and their friends are invited to come along and enjoy a great night’s entertainment before going to Pearse Park on Sunday to support Rathcline.

Thank You:

The Rathcline club would like to express their deepest gratitude to JP Mc Manus for his very generous donation to each GAA club in the country. Our donation was gratefully received and will be spent wisely.

Good Luck:

The club would like to wish Paddy Neilan, St. Faithleach’s, the very best of luck on Sunday next. Paddy, during the week was appointed to referee the Roscommon County Final in Hyde Park.

50/50

On Monday night last, the draw took place for the weekly 50/50 draw. The winning name this week was in the name of one of our most popular town residents Tommy Mc Carthy, Longford Road. The winning envelope was worth €320. Congratulations to Tommy on his marvellous win and the club also thanks him for his weekly support of the 50/50

The club thanks everyone for their continued support and encourage everyone to persist in your support as your name will surely be drawn out soon.  Tickets are on sale in local shops and businesses throughout the town at €2 each. Alternatively, you can by the pink ticket for the year for just €100 and have 2 free weeks. The club would like to thank everyone that continues to support the draw on a weekly basis and the many people that buy the one-year ticket.

Fixture:

The club still has two league games to play following the Intermediate Championship final and they are pencilled into the fixtures as follows: Saturday 20th October at 4pm game against Cashel in Clonbonny and the final game in Dunbeggan at 4pm on Saturday 27th October. If we win both games, we will play Granard for the opportunity to be promoted to Division 1 for the 2019 season.

Underage:

On Saturday last our U16 team played Clonbroney/Wolfe Tones in Pearse Park on Saturday last in the Juvenile Division 1 Final. This was our first time in many years to be in a Division 1 final at this grade. The game started well for us and things looked great when we were three points ahead during the first half. As the saying goes ‘goals win games’, and this was the case as Clonbroney/Wolfe Tones scored 3 over the hour to our 1. The final scoreline read Clonbroney/Wolfe Tones 3-7 and Western Gaels 1-9. It was a tremendous performance by our lads who lost nothing in defeat and there is no doubt that the future is bright for those young men. We congratulate them on reaching the final and remind them that with continued hard work their day will come.

Our minor team will play in the Minor Football Cup on Wednesday week 17th October in Michael Fay Park at 8.15. This is a wonderful opportunity for this excellent team to leave their grade as Minor champions. We urge every Rathcline supporter to go along to Farneyhoogan and cheer the lads on.

Fixtures:

Our Under 14s were due to play next Saturday but received a walk over and their next fixture will be Saturday week when
