Lanesboro Ballylegue notes Monday 18th February 2019

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Dinner Dance

Last Saturday night saw the return of the Rathcline Dinner Dance to celebrate the winning of the Intermediate Championship and U20 Championship. The venue was the Longford Arms and it was good to be back in the Longford Arms after so many years absence.

The venue and meal were exceptional and the selection of the venue by the committee proved to be an excellent one. The atmosphere was laid back and the presentation by the club of the event was exceptional much credit must go to Marie Farrell, Caroline Ginty, Sarah Kearney, Cathal Chapman, Alan Fayne and Ryan Fallon.

Dancing went late into the night with Rhythm & Sticks followed by the disco. We look forward to the event next year and look forward to a bigger, but I cannot say better event. Well done to all.

The Green

The photos are starting to come in and believe me they are bringing back great memories. I would encourage anyone else that has photographs of the Green, and stories to contact me. I am looking for all photographs of all residents of the Green right up to the present day – just a flick on your phone, camera, iPad and forward it to me at joea@iol.ie. If you do not have a family picture perhaps you can forward me individual pictures and the house number you live/d in. If you don’t have a photograph from your time on the Green a family photograph from a later date will do. I am also looking for photograph of the apprentices and lodgers that stayed on the Green. You can also drop them into me in the shop where I will scan them and return them to you a minute later. Pleurisy

It is a bigger, better, brighter and happier parade we are looking forward to this year.

And Thank You

‘And thank You’ is a new play written and performed by the ever popular and star man Seamus O’Rourke will come to St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro, on Saturday 9th March at 8.30pm. This is a production much sought after, and it was a very lucky thing that the Minor Club got their ‘spake’ in on time to ensure we would be fortunate enough to have it. Tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s costing €10. Tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s and to book your tickets phone Martina 086-3858934. The play is being hosted by the Shannon Gaels Minor Club.

The following is a synopsis of the play: A play about an ordinary man living in rural Ireland who gets saved… Saved from a life of pub talk and prophesising. King John O’Sullivan used to be able to drink fifteen pints without having to piddle, now, it’s every nine. Going to the Gents so often can wear a man out. The story is told by the Reverend Thaddaeus Clancy and O’Sullivan’s two sons, Larry O and Martin. The sons run the family shop while Daddy, the King of McKenna’s Bar makes up the rules. It’s a story of hard work and success and dangling. There’s bad driving and ice hockey and there’s falling down. When the ‘Divel’ starts to gnaw, the kingdom will fall.

U.C.D. Student, Padraig Sorohan is organising a table quiz in Rosie’s on Friday 1st March at 9.30pm in aid of his upcoming trip to Haiti. Dinner Dance

Last Saturday night the Rathcline Dinner Dance returned to the club and parish social scene after a lapse of a few years and it proved to be a tremendous community night out. The venue was the Longford Arms and Orla Reynolds and her team really pulled out all stop to ensure that it was going to be a great night for us as it really proved to be.

MC for the night the peerless Mickey Farrell introduced a brief and excellent video history of the club compiled by Sarah Kearney. County Board Treasurer Albert Cooney spoke on behalf of the county board where he complimented the club on their success and their continued input into the county teams. He also lamented the lack of a club history and encouraged someone to take on the task in compiling the history of the club. The medal presentation took place followed with club chairman Liam Connerton presenting medals to the Intermediate and U20 panel ad team managements. Following the presentation 2018 team manger was invited to say a few words. Liam who received a rousing welcome gave a very informative talk where was high in his praise of the young men he had to deal with during the year, the tremendous potential of the club going forward and the need to manage the talent that was available to us. Club Chairman Liam Connerton then made a special presentation to Liam and Marie Farrell made a presentation of a bouquet of flowers to his wife Catherine. Liam was then asked to announce who he and the team management felt was the players of the year. Falling into the criteria of what was required he announced Kevin Chapman as the club player of the year.
