Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 11th March

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Can we allow this to Happen?

Last week I received one of the most disturbing notes I have received in a long long time. The note was from the Lough Ree Athletic club and I quote “There is now a motion before the next meeting that the club be abandoned and interested athletes can join either Longford or Roscommon clubs”. I ask you can we allow this to happen?

Lough Ree Athletic Club was formed in 1973, 46 years ago, and has been an outlet for so many young people over the years and so close to a 50th Anniversary its demise would be unthinkable

Lough Ree Athletic Club is synonymous with the communities of Rathcline, Kilgefin, Newtowncashel and Killashee, Ballymahon for a huge number of years with many great successes since its inception. It has provided the youth of those areas with a sporting and athletic grounding. The lose the Lough Ree Athletic Club would be shocking.

Lough Ree Athletic Club has for generations given so many young people a sport to participate in and the chance to excel which many did down through the years with national and international success.

There has been a dedicated and hard-working committee working with the youth of the club but there is a time that those people, who have done so much, to say stop and for others to step up to the plate – now is that time. The next meeting is crucial to the continuation of the club and there must be a big number from all communities to take the mantle from the current committee and drive the club strongly into the future.

Our St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Have you entered you float or group into the St. Patrick’s Day Parade? If not, don’t delay another minute. Application forms are available from Teresa Costello, Freda Connaughton or O’Brien’s shop and returned to O’Brien’s please.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade starting in Ballyleague and finishing in Lanesboro is our very own parade and it is a parade that we should be very proud of and we should be very supportive of all the hard work being done by the committee as they work on enhancing our special day year on year. There are many very creative people in our community, and we would love to see their thoughts and work coming up the Main Street.

Final preparations are taking place all this week in preparation for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade which will commence at 2.30pm from St. Faithleach’s clubhouse and finish at Lanesboro Community College on St. Patrick’s Day.

The day will kick off with the traditional mass at St. Mary’s Church at 11.30am which will include the Parish Choir, World Champion Irish Dancers and the very best of Traditional Musicians.

You are asked to get your float entry in as soon as possible as you will not be adjudicated if your entry is not in on time.

There are raffle tickets on sale throughout to help defray some of the costs of hosting the Parade and we would ask you to be generous in your support. The draw will take place in Adie’s on St. Patrick’s night at about 11pm. There is €500 to be won in prizes.

The organisers would like to thank all the businesses that have already contributed and ask those outstanding to make their contributions as soon as possible. The committee would like to thank everyone who are putting in so much effort in getting their floats ready.

Before the parade enters the town, the traditional musicians will entertain the gathering as they play at the reviewing stand.

The categories being judged are Overall Float, Best Club, Best Junior, most Original, Best Vintage, Best Dressed Window and Best Business.

The entire community and surrounding communities are all invited to come to Lanesboro and Ballyleague for our parade.

Strength in unity is what St. Patrick’s Day brings to our community.

Coffee Morning

A Coffee Morning in support of Daffodil Day and the Irish Cancer Society will take place in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Friday 22nd March from 10am to 1pm. Your support can help greatly in the ongoing developments in the search for the cure for Cancer. Great work continues to be done and your support will mean a lot.

CBS on a Roll

Roscommon CBS who a fortnight ago qualified for their first Senior Rugby Final on Wednesday next were not allowed take all the limelight in the school as the senior GAA team played and defeated St. Muredach’s in the Connacht semi-final to qualify for the Final. Featuring on the football side were local lads Cian Glennon, Michael Dunne, Liam Ormsby so of Steve and Teresa and James Browne son of Declan and Patricia.

There is not much time to draw breath for the Senior Cup Rugby Final will take place in the Sportsground, Galway on Wednesday at 4pm and the Connacht Senior Final will take place the following Saturday 16th March. Cian Glennon and Michael Dunne play with both sides and we wish both lads along with Conor Rohan, team captain, and Jack Tucker the very best on Wednesday along with Liam Ormsby and James Browne and the two lads Cian and Michael doubling up on Saturday the very best of luck on Saturday.

It is a proud week for the parents of the players, and we as a community share their pride and excitement and we wish them the very best of luck this week

New Estate

Last week over 30 people received their keys to the new Knock Manor housing estate on the Longford Road adjacent to Curraghrua. There has been great excitement in the area over the past while as people were being informed as to who would be receiving their key. It is great to see lights going on in the houses for the first time as each family prepare their new home for moving into in the very near future.

The estate was built by Faughnan Construction along with Mulleady Construction comprises of a selection of 2, 3 and 4-bedroom houses.  The estate by all accounts has been very well built and laid out. It will be great to see everyone making their home there and in Lanesboro and I would like to compliment both Faughnan’s and Mulleady’s on their great work and having Knock Manor completed in such a short period of time.

This is a new beginning for all the new residents of the estate, and I would like to welcome everyone to the Knock Manor and Lanesboro. I hope they have a long, healthy, successful and happy time in our great community.

Death

Great people come into one’s life and leave a lasting impression. Such was the case of Luke Kenny, Cullentra who I am sure affected everyone he met. Luke was one special man whose warm and embracing smile was the first thing you would notice only followed by the warmest of welcomes you were ever to encounter. Luke, in his late 80s lived his life and worked the family farm until recent times. He was a man who loved to welcome the many that called to his home and such was his dept of knowledge you always left a more informed person. Luke will be very sadly missed by everyone that knew him. He was highly read and has a wonderful love and in-dept knowledge of nature and his farm land. Luke passed away suddenly at Portiuncla Hospital Ballinasloe on Monday last 4th March. His remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home before being removed to St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday. Following his Funeral Mass on Thursday Luke was laid to rest in the Kenny family plot in Lanesboro Cemetery. We would like to sincerely sympathise with his relatives and many friends.

Three new Gardaí

Last week three local lads became members of the Garda Siochana when they graduated at the passing out ceremony at Garda training Centre Templemore. Patrick Gill, Clonadra son of Marty and Ita Gill, will be stationed in Trim, Co. Meath, Darragh Hussey son of Pat and Dee Hussey will be stationed in Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal while Colm Mangan son of Jimmy and Mary will be stationed in Blanchestown, Co. Dublin. We wish the three lads the very best of luck in their new life pathway.

The Green

The photos are starting to come in and believe me they are bringing back great memories. I would encourage anyone else that has photographs of the Green, and stories to contact me. I am looking for all photographs of all residents of the Green right up to the present day – just a flick on your phone, camera, iPad and forward it to me at joea@iol.ie. If you do not have a family picture perhaps you can forward me individual pictures and the house number you live/d in. If you don’t have a photograph from your time on the Green a family photograph from a later date will do. I am also looking for photograph of the apprentices and lodgers that stayed on the Green. You can also drop them into me in the shop where I will scan them and return them to you a minute later.

Award Nominations

We are all aware of the high standards set by the PS Restaurant and the great comments are never ending. Oskars Launch

Since Sept 1st last year a small committee of dedicated volunteers has raised 25,000 euro for to build a new astro football pitch in our community. The pitch will be for everybody of every age who wants to use it at the track beside Lanesborough Community College.

The committee has two active grant applications for up to 200,000 euro ongoing but it is clear they will need around €100,000 of matching funding to get the pitch done this coming summer and that’s why they are launching one big push at fundraising in the next few weeks when you and your family and friends will be asked to take a small part of some sort in an Oskar night.

7 short films of less than 10 minutes duration will be shot by a professional company (Kevin Rowe Events) here around all areas where Ballyboro players live around Easter. Every community organisation is invited along with parents of students to then come to the auditions on Sunday March 24th at 6pm in the Community College to kick it off and, when it is over, the films will be shown at a Mega Ballyboro Oskar Premiere Night on Saturday June 15th. In the next ten days you will be asked by one of the committee members to play a part. Please say yes.  And if you don’t want any role in the film (even as an extra) we still want your help please because we urgently need people to help behind the scenes for a 10-week period only. See you all on Sunday March 24th in Lanesborough Community College at 6pm for the kick-off.

Thirty years ago, a small group of hard-working people with a vision came together and put the track and the pitch at the school – we all see what a fantastic amenity it has been for walking, running and athletics since Sept 1st last year our committee has raised €25,000 for our new astro football pitch. The pitch will be for everybody of every age who wants to use it at the track beside Lanesborough Community College.

We have two active grant applications for up to €200,000 ongoing, but it is clear we will need around €100,000

Ballyboro

The Blitz on Saturday proved to be a very worthwhile venture. Due to the adverse weather forecast the venue was switched to the Lisnamult Astro and the game format was changed to six a side. Ten teams took part and Dr. Dolittles Animals took the honours defeating A Little Silhouette of Milan in the final. The winning panel was James Quigley, Daniel Foley, Brian Murtagh, Ciaran Murtagh, Liam Ormsby, David Rooney, David Harrison, and Aidan Dooney. Kyle Fitzmaurice won the award for top goal scorer. Thanks are due to all who helped make the occasion such a success: The teams and their sponsors (Irwin Construction), Dr. David Harrison, Garret Johnston, Vistamed, Gerard Farrell, Fusion Electrical, Kevin Hanley, Finns Centra, Ellie Ann’s, Alan Farrell); the management of Lisnamult Astro for making their fine facility available to the club; Stephen Dowd, Declan Molloy and Philip Gordon who looked after the food; the organising  committee and in particular organiser in chief Jason Fallon. Thanks also to Willie Penrose and Alan Mangan who made a generous donation towards the running of the event. It is envisaged that the competition will be an annual one, and here’s looking forward to next year when hopefully it will be held on our own brand new Astro.
The Oskars night will take place on 19th June and the official launch of this huge project will take place on Sunday week at 6pm in Lanesboro Community College, where casting and auditions will also be held for the seven short films to be screened on the big night. All are welcome to attend.
The under 10 team’s game away to Killoe Celtic was cut short halfway through the first half when a heavy fall of snow made it impossible to continue. The score at the time was 1-1, with the Ballyboro goal coming direct from a corner courtesy of Rian Shanley.
