Seeking People to do B& B
Last weekend I was asked where there was B&B locally that could be availed of for the Pike Fishing competition that takes place on 14th and 15th September. The two lads’ sons of a former local man are looking for B&B for the 13th/14th September. If you are intending to do B&B for that weekend or have the space to do it could you contact me at the shop, and I will put you in touch.
Midland Rally
The Midland Rally once again came to the parish. With it came the customary noise of the rally car as they came in the Longford Road and up the Rathcline Road to the stage start in Lisrevagh. Rally cars came from all over Ireland to take part and a huge number of followers came too searching for the best vantage points to see the thrills and spills of the Midland Rally. As the crossroads in town there was a great number of local residents watching the cars making their way to the stage start and it roar of the engines rather than the speed was the main attraction.
Local entrants Stephen Healy, driver along with co-pilot Enda Fallon had an eventful drive as the they encountered a clutch problem and as luck would have it happened beside Stephen’s home and they put it up and fitted a new clutch and they were back in the race where they went on to complete the course. Driver Vincent Collins and his co-pilot Fintan Kilroe did not encounter such problems and went to a high final position.
There were many local people involved in the staging of the rally and their input must be complimented for the successful organising of this very popular rally. Congratulations to the entire organising team on a fabulous day.
Extreme Tractor Run
An Extreme Tractor Run will take place the weekend 19th to 21st April from Dublin to Mayo to raise funds for the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire, Paediatric & Special Care Unit at the Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar and Mayo University Hospital Castlebar. All of the above are cause are well worth supporting. Two local lads Gordon Farrell, son of Pauric and Deirdre, Carrowstrawley and Shane Prior son of Ciaran and Jacqui Prior are making this huge trip to help raising the funds. Birth
Many congratulations to Urszula Kapeluszua and Artur Rydzak, Cnoc na Gaoithe on the recent birth of a baby boy.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Coyle family, Weekfield on the death last Tuesday 19th March of Mrs. Annie Coyle. Annie was predeceased by her husband the late Jimmy and she was sister of the late Pakie Wallace. She will be very sadly missed by her sons James, Michael, Paul and Patrick, sister Beetie, relatives and a huge host of friends.
Lough Ree Athletic Club
The reconvened AGM of the club will take place next Thursday 28th March in St Marys Parish Hall at 9.15 pm. It would be wonderful if all interested in athletics and it development in the area could attend.
There was a very good attendance at the Sunday morning run in Clonbonny with the “in form” Mikey Sorohan leading home the runners in a very fast time.
The next event for the younger brigade will be the Under 9 to Under 11 in the Indoor Arena at AIT, Athlone on Saturday May 4th. Athletes need to reach their eighth birthday this year to be eligible for this event.
The Green
The numbers of photos are starting to come in in greater numbers and I would like to thank you for your search. As I look through them, they are bringing back great memories of the people and their families. I would encourage anyone else that has photographs of the Green, and stories to contact me. I am looking for all photographs of all residents of the Green right up to the present day – just a flick on your phone, camera, iPad and forward it to me at joea@iol.ie.
If you do not have a family picture perhaps you can forward me individual pictures and the house number you live/d in.
If you don’t have a photograph from your time on the Green a family photograph from a later date will do. I am also looking for photograph of the apprentices and lodgers that stayed on the Green. You can also drop them into me in the shop where I will scan them and return them to you a minute later. Thank you.
Revisiting Nurse Donlon
Previously I was seeking information on the memories of Nurse Donlon at the bottom of Main Street. A good number of memories were recounted in longhand and via email to Stella in the Library. A great number made comment on the notice back then but never put pen to paper or finger to the keyboard. Now we are making a final call for people to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard and relate their memories in print. There is so much got already but there is much more out there. Éigse Peter Carberry
Pete Carberry was noted as being one off the very best uilleann pipers in Ireland and the opportunity to celebrate Pete’s memory and music comes to Lanesboro and I would urge everyone that remembers Pete, his music and those that would like to be part of the weekend to come along.
This Commerative weekend to celebrate the life and music of the late Pete Carberry of Derryhaun will be held in Lanesboro over the weekend 12th to 14th April. Pete was a noted uilleann piper who performed and recorded traditional Irish music in a career spanning several decades. The weekend’s events will include Junior and Master music classes, lecture, recitals, Workshops and Exhibition and a concert of traditional Irish music and song. Co. Longford Spelling Champion
Many congratulations to Chriswin Regit, Cnoc na Gaoithe who recently became the 2019 Spelling Bee Champion for County Longford. Chriswin is pupil at Lanesboro Primary School and will now progress to the Leinster Final in May.

Alzheimer Café
The next Alzheimer cafe will be held on this Wednesday 27th March at 7.00pm. in the room at the back of Longford Credit Union. Entrance and car parking facility are at the rear of the building, between Longford Shopping Centre and Longford Motor taxation office. Guest Speaker on the night is Marie Mc Givney PHN, and her topic is Caring for people with Dementia. This is an information and social evening with tea, coffee, and refreshments been served. Thanks to all who turned up in on Sunday
evening last in big numbers and auditioned for the forthcoming OSKAR Night. All
the aspiring George Clooney’s and Meryl Streep’s were put through their paces
by producer Kevin Rowe and his assistants, and they are eagerly looking forward
to the rehearsals beginning in earnest.
Fixtures: The under 16s are away to Ballymahon
in the quarter final of the Nolan Cup on Sunday at 2.30.In the first round of
the Shane Brennan Cup, the under 14s are at home to Inny FC on Friday at
5.30.The under 13s are at home to Killoe Celtic on Saturday at 1pm in the
Premier Division Shield. The under 11s play Killoe Lions in Lanesboro on
Saturday at 12 noon in a crucial league encounter. On Saturday the under 9s
will be taking part in a Blitz in Lanesboro along with Ballymahon and Melview starting
at 11am.

On Monday night last, the draw took place for the weekly 50/50 draw. This week our winner was Mary Tiernan, Ferefad, Longford. The winning envelope this week was worth €365. Mary is a weekly player of our 50/50 and we congratulate her on her win. Perhaps next week it can be your turn, all you have to do is to buy a ticket for €2 to be in the draw.

The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery draw took place on Tuesday morning last on the Co-Op office. There was no winner of the €15,000, jackpot and the jackpot for this week and the jackpot has now reached its maximum of €15,000. The numbers drawn were, 2, 20, 27 and 28. The winner of the €50 prize was Adrian Fallon, c/o Clarkes Bar, and the three €20 winners were Eugene Mulvihill, Killashee, Bridie c/o Mags, and Geraldine Farrell c/o Mags

U12 Boys: Our U12 boys team had the opportunity to play at half time in the Hyde
during the Roscommon v Kerry match on Sunday last. This was a fantastic experience for all concerned and we would like to thank Roscommon GAA, club manager John Casey and all the parents who supported the boys for great an afternoon.
