Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 15th March’09

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Death

The entire area was saddened to learn of the death at her residence of Sarah Kennedy, Weekfield on Monday last. Sarah was predeceased only a few months ago by her husband John. She had been in failing health for a time and it was the true character of the woman for the way she faced ill health. She was a woman strong in resolution and dignity. A wonderful neighbour with a heart of gold and her passing will leave a great void in the area and in the hearts and minds of those that had the pleasure to know her. Her remains were removed from her residence on Wednesday last to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague and following her funeral Mass her remains were laid to rest in Cashel cemetery. To her son Joe, daughters Margaret and Ann, sisters Mrs. Maureen Mc Ateer, Ballyleague and Sr. Camillus, California, relatives and many friends we would like to extend our sincere sympathy.

 Patrick’s Day Parade

The second St. Patrick’s Day parade will take place on Tuesday next 17th March starting at St. Faithleach’s GAA pitch at 2.30pm. For a first time parade last year proved to be an extravagant affair and it is expected that the number of floats will exceed last year. The athmosphere generated is electric and especially as the parade comes into sight as it makes the bend at Sorohan’s and has the long straight in front of it.  The town last year was thronged and it will be great to have a great day for our community as both sides of the bridge celebrate our national feast day.  Come along and enjoy the athmosphere of the day and celebrate in your own town.

Fair Day

At the crack of dawn on Saturday last the clatter of barriers being put in place was the first greeting of the traditional Fair Day. A strong force of volunteers was closing off the upper Main Street area to facilitate the horses, ponies and other animals that would be in brought to Lanesboro Fair. By eight o clock all the stalls were in place and the local Gardaí were on hand that all traffic restrictions were adhered to. The buzz was already in the air despite the dank and dreariness the weather brought to the start of the day.

At half past ten the horses and other animals started to file up the town from the car-park and filled the area set out. It did not take long for the area to fill and the bidding and bargaining started and many animals were sold in the first two hours of trading. The excitement was now infectious and it was great to see so many people lining the street and watching the dealings while others were buying from all the trade stands. Shortly after noon the day closed in and the rain came but it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and the worries and concerns of the troubled economic times was set aside for the duration of the fair.

The Dog Show at the back of Joe and Martha Farrell’s Yacht Bar took place despite the rain and it was great credit to the dog owners that they turned up in such big numbers. Dogs of all breeds and sizes crammed the car park area of the bar and as usual the show was an outstanding success under the stewardship of Dog Show of organisers Samantha Lulham, Aaron Wyse, Niamh Shea and the watchful eye of judge Gerard Donoghue.

Again we must pay tribute to the organizational skills of the Fair Day committee for again organizing such an outstanding day. The word volunteerism is the buzz word at the moment within many organizations but there is absolutely no doubt that the people of the area are an example to the world. The number of people volunteering to help out is truly amazing and we as a community have to be right proud of the people that give of their time to help out. It is only right that both the committee and the volunteers be recognized and thanked for their tremendous work all day.

As an aside

While in the shop on Sunday morning a man that has moved into the parish a few years back was discussing the Fair Day and commented to me about the amazing amount of talent and invention that we have in the area. During the conversation he highlighted the number of events and local participation that happens in the area over a year and said that we have a community spirit second to none. It was particularly pleasing to have the spirit of the parish recognised and long may our community maintain and grow such excellent characteristics.

Ballyboro

The under 7 game played last week finished on a scoreline of Ballyboro 2 Ballymahon 1. Ballyboro Lions came away from Ballymahon with a hard fought victory on Saturday last. In a close contest goals from Liam Ormsby and Evan Chalmers gave Ballyboro the victory. Dylan Donlon was in good form in goals and the back three of Chloe Hussey, Jennifer Brennan and Michael Dunne gave very little away. Midfielders Liam Ormsby and James Browne got on top and formed the platform for the win. Up front Orla Costello and Evan Chalmers were always a threat. The Lions remain unbeaten so far this season and the players must be congratulated on this fine feat.

Lough Ree Theatre Company

In light of the inordinate number of events happening in the area at present the Lough Ree Theatre Company have decided to delay their play ‘Thy will be done’ until a later date.  Presently there are a lot of events going on in the local area and this led to the conclusion of the committee to defer the play. The decision was based on the large number of locals that are highly involved in these events and in order to give everybody the chance to draw breath. Rehearsals will continue apace and when the big night comes I am sure it will have been a play well worth waiting for.
