Royalty
When I think of the lines of the Don McLean song says, ‘the day the music died’, I think while not dead it was well silenced from where Irish music was in our community a number of years ago. Apart from the weekly Wednesday sessions in Clarke’s and at some other small events there was little to no music being heard.
Last weekend in Lanesboro the very first Éigse Peter Carberry took place and what we saw was the resurgence of Irish music in the area. Last weekend was the recognition of music Royalty within our community and it was a tremendous pleasure that throughout the weekend our Royalty could be seen and heard around the town. Pete Carberry will be long remembered worldwide for his absolute talented musicianship.
On Saturday afternoon there were a series of workshops where a large number attended the many workshops.
Crème de la crème was Saturday night’s concert in St. Mary’s Hall. It started of brilliantly with an array of some of Ireland’s most talented musicians and singers bringing an almighty glow of warmth and feeling to proceedings. A full house was there to celebrate the life of Pete Carberry and to support his family and his many friends that at a drop of a hat came from far and wide to contribute to the celebration of his musical life.
What followed in the second half of the concert was truly phenomenal and this was where we recognised our very own as Irish music Royalty with the following two families who have given so much of their lives to the deliverance of Irish music at the highest level.
While we all recognise the Donlon name within Irish music and on Saturday night we saw the legacy of Jim and Vera Donlon with their daughters Teresa, Nuala, son Padraig and his daughter Fionnuala and son Cillian performing to a level that has not been seen nor heard in a long time.
Next on stage was the Carberry family featuring all generations of Pete family; Diarmuid Ó Buachalla Uillean Pipes grandson, Kevin Barry Carberry, Uillean Pipes grandson, Noel Carberry, Uillean Pipes son, Angelia Carberry, banjo, grandniece, Angelina’s partner, Dan Brouder, accordion, Deirdre Ní Buachalla, harp and granddaughter, Óisín Malone great grandson and Méadhbh Carberry granddaughter. The family were joined by the excellent and world-renowned Patsy Hanley. The music was regal, and the legacy of Pete Carberry and his late wife Trish’s was clear to be seen in the performance of their family.
On Friday night at the Official launch there was a Ó ghlúin go glúin (from generation to generation) ceremony where Noel Carberry passed on the Uillean pipes to Pete’s great grandson Óisín Malone and following the displays on Saturday night the heritage of Irish music is safe and secure in the next generations of both families.
Pete’s Anniversary Mass took place on Sunday in Newtowncashel followed by a visit to his grave in Clonbonny where a recital took place. The weekend closed officially in the Parish Hall where there was a gathering of uilleann pipers playing throughout the afternoon.
To ensure that the future of Irish music is secure in the area the proceeds of the Éigse Peter Carberry weekend will go towards building an instrument bank to aid young people and develop Irish Music classes in the area where young people will be able to avail of the instrument bank to obtain an instrument and develop their skill.
Thoughts and ideas for next year’s festival are already being hatched and we look forward to it being a festival that will continue to grow and developed into a fantastic festival f Irish music to rival any other festival in the country. This was a weekend of music for the ages and we look forward to a resurgence of Irish music in the community.

Church Gate Collection
This coming weekend Easter weekend there will be a Church Gate collection taken up at all Masses for Lanesboro parish Hall, St. Mary’s. You are encouraged to be as generous as possible for our hall. There is much upkeep and maintenance needed on the hall on an ongoing basis and your contributions will go a long way in maintaining the hall in excellent condition for all the people that avail of it.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The first outing for 2019 of the Lough Ree Golfing Society is to County Longford Golf Club on Friday next 19th April at 11am
The Society is looking to welcoming back all previous members and they would like to see many new members
Tractor Run this coming weekend
Two local lads Gordon Farrell, and Shane Prior are making this marathon trip from Dublin to mayo to help raising the funds for the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire, Paediatric & Special Care Unit at the Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar and Mayo University Hospital Castlebar. Easter Penance Service will take place on Wednesday 17th April at 7.30pm.
Ceremonies for Holy week commence on Thursday at 7.30pm Good Friday 3pm and 8pm. Holy Saturday at 7.30pm. Easter Sunday Masses at 9.30am and 11.30am.
Lough Ree Athletic Club
Training has now gone from once a week to twice a week. It is great to see our numbers increasing week on week and to see so many young people out enjoying themselves. Training will now take place on Tuesdays at 6.30pm and Sunday’s at 12.30pm. We encourage as many young people to come along and join in the great fun that is athletics.

Tidy Towns Lotto
The lucky numbers drawn last week were 22, 23, 25 and 28. The winner of the €50 prize was Marie Mc Grath, Derrygeel, and the three €20 winners were Tiernan Hanley, Corrigeen, Ann Pam Feeney, Rathcline and Dorothy Fagan c/o Market. The jackpot now stands at €3,200.
For the Easter Draw on Tuesday next 23rd April the prizes will be an increase in the prizes given out apart from the jackpot the secondary prizes will be €100 and three €50 prizes.

Seeing what has come in so far is great to see and recall memories. Don’t delay or depend on anyone else to send them please forward them on to me. It is just a flick on your phone, camera, iPad and forward it to me at joea@iol.ie.
If you don’t have a photograph from your time on the Green a family photograph from a later date will do. You can also drop them into me in the shop where I will scan them and return them to you there and then. I am also looking for photograph of the apprentices and lodgers that stayed on the Green.
Annual 25 Drive
The annual Rathcline Good Friday 25 Drive (Partners) will take place in St. Mary’s Hall on Good Friday 19th April with the first hands being dealt at 9pm sharp. Year on year this card game becomes more popular and we look forward to Friday 19th being great night with big numbers. Tickets are priced at € each and even if you are not going you can buy your ticket put your name on it and return to the seller. By doing this you will be in for the draw for a number of prizes. As usual refreshments will be served and there will be numerous spot prizes.
25 weekly drive

Illegal Dumping
I know it is useless to ask people to stop illegal dumping they just don’t heed. No matter what road off the main road you take there is not a shortage of illegal dumping. This illegal dumping is spoiling our countryside and it is a blight on our community. It is only an attraction for vermin. The problem is getting worse and it is very important while walking, cycling or driving that if you come across people dumping that you take the car/van registration and report it immediately to the Environment Department of Longford County Council: (043) 334 3300 or Roscommon County Council (090) 663 7100
50/50
On Monday night last, the draw took place for the weekly 50/50 draw. This week our winner was Clara Ginty, New York City. The winning envelope this week was worth €412. We congratulate Clara on her win and thank her for her support. Maybe next week it can be your turn, all you have to do is to buy a ticket for €2 to be in the draw.
It is wonderful to see the 50/50 continuing to rise each week and a special thank you to all of you that are new to supporting the draw and those weekly contributors. Let’s hope that in the very near future the draw each will consistently top the €500 mark and it can with your continued support.

Alzheimers Café
The next Alzheimer cafe will be held on Wednesday week 24th April at 7.00pm. in the room at the back of Longford Credit Union. Entrance and car parking facility are at the rear of the building, between Longford Shopping Centre and Longford Motor taxation office. Guest Speaker on the night is Pat Chapman, Citizens Information, and his topic is The Fair Deal. This is an information and social evening with tea, coffee, and refreshments been served. Tractor Run
Ballymahon’s first ever Tractor Run, takes place on Sunday April 14th. All proceeds on the day goes to Ballymahon Day Care Centre.
The Centre has renovations which need to be carried out. This will bring the Centre in line with today’s standards.
Work will commence when the Centre closes for the month of August and will need to be completed for when the Centre reopens in September.
All proceeds from the tractor run will go to make up the shortfall of funding required for the renovation works which needs to be carried out.
On the day of the tractor run, all tractors are asked to park in the field opposite Nally’s Topaz/Spar and walk across the road to register in Ballymahon Day Care Centre.
Any lorries, jeep and trailers carrying tractors are asked to unload at Finn’s Centra on the Athlone Road and park lorries or jeeps there in their big car park in an orderly fashion.
Registration opens at 11am with raffle cards on sale €2 a line. Tea or coffee and homemade scones served before we depart at 12noon.
The safety vehicle will go in front followed by the vintage tractors which will set the pace.

team came back to form with a vengeance when they recorded a comprehensive win
over UCL Rhinos, by six goals to two, to clinch a league semi-final place. Team

The under 13 team gave a terrific performance when they
accounted for a highly rated Melview team in the quarter final of the David
Flaherty Cup .A resolute Ballyboro defence kept the Longford boys at bay
in the early stages, before devastating counter attacks yielded goals from Eoin
Cox(2),Euan Cullen, and Christian Donlon. Though Melview staged a comeback in
the second period, Alex Forde scored the clinching goal to see Ballyboro safely
through to the semi-final by a 5-3 margin. Team: Sam Glennon, Rory Carling, Jack

OSKAR fever is beginning to grip the locality and the
castings were revealed before a big attendance on Friday last. Due to the fact
that an amazing 110 people auditioned for parts, an eight film will be screened
on the Big Night. Tickets are being snapped up at O’Brien’s for what will
undoubtedly be the night of the year. The Cashel group are staging a Mr. and
Mrs. event in The Local on Easter Sunday night. This is sure to be a very
entertaining and informative night and all support will be appreciated.
Fixtures: On this Tuesday (16th), the under 16s
play Gaels United in Drumlish at 7pm.Also on this Tuesday the under 12s play
Melview at Abbeycartron at 7pm in the Major Division Championship. On Wednesday
the under 13s play Stonepark in Abbeycartron, kick off 7pm. On Friday the under
14s are at home to Newtown, time tbc. Two games are fixed for next Monday (Bank
Holiday): the under 12s are at home to Newtown Bears in the quarter final of
the Tynan Cup, kick off 11.30am and at 1pm the under 14s are also at home to
Ardagh United in the semi-final of the First Division Plate.

Leader Cup
Saturday last was the chance to build on our win over Clonguish when we took on Mostrim in Clonbonny on Saturday. It was another tough, hard and sporting game with neither side giving quarter. In the end the score board read in our favour on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-11. The old adage of goals win games was again proving to be true. Well done to the lads.
On Friday next 19th our Reserve League Division 1 team will play Longford Slashers at 5.30pm in Farneyhoogan. All panes members are asked to be in The dressing rooms at 4.45pm.

St. Faithleach’s GAA
Senior League: Round three of the O’Rourke Cup was held in Ballyleague on Sunday afternoon against Western Gaels. Result: St. Faithleach’s 2-12 Western Gaels 0-10. Next round against St. Brigid’s.
Junior Ladies League: The Ladies play Boyle in the league semi-final on Sunday 28th April.
Well done: To club rep Katie Murray and her teammates on the Roscommon Ladies U14 panel who won the Connacht B Final on Saturday. Also, to Ellen Irwin, Kate McPhilips and Jennifer Brennan who won the Minor B Connacht Final.
Community Games: Kilgefin Community Games track events were held on club grounds on Thursday last with over 100 children from the parish participating, well done to all involved and to the volunteers who continue to grow the event year on year.
