Former Resident Passes Away

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of one our former Green residents. Patricia Neilan formerly O’Neill and better known locally as Patsy passed away, aged 70, on Friday last 17th May. Patsy was predeceased by her husband Terry, her sister June and brothers Gerry and John Henry. Patsy and the O’Neill family left and indelible mark on our community and even after being away for so many years away they are fondly remembered and Lanesboro remains very close to their hearts.

Our sympathy goes to Patsy’s family Siobhan, Terence and Mary Jo, her sisters Bernie and Maura and brothers Bobby and Joe.

Meditation for Beginners

Meditation for Beginners continues in Ballyleague on Wednesdays, 7 – 8pm on Wednesday evenings. There are still a very limited of places available and if you wish to attend please phone Áine, 086-8407718 for all details.

Pipe Band

In recent days I had a chat with Michael Mc Dermott, formerly of Mount Davis. While chatting about the Lanesboro ago he mentioned that his father, Pat, used to recount of a pipe band being formed in the community. Back in the 1930/40s,  a parish collection was made for the purchase of Bag Pipes and drums hence the birth of the pipe band.
The band was very successful and they regularly played at various parochial events and other places where no band existed
Their largest event and a wonderful claim to fame was playing at the wedding of Lady Granard in the big house in Newtownforbes. It is said that they were there for almost a week – well, you can’t beat a good weeding.
I can vaguely remember as a child in the old Pillar Ballroom there was always two drums at the back of the stage – not sure if they were the same drums.

Does it bring back memories? It would be great to hear stories about the pipe band, the stories and the instruments.

It all happens on Friday night

Next Friday night we are a promised a rousing session when Fran Deffew along with band members of Rake the Ashes will play St. Mary’s Hall on Friday night 24th May in the ‘Back to the Boro’ concert at 8.30pm. Those have already heard them play in Cassidy’s Pub in Camden Street, Dublin and at their many concerts around the country will attest to magnificent night of music song and an abundance of craic.

This night in Lanesboro Parish Hall will be most definitely be one of the most rousing in many years of this venue and it is most definitely a night not to be missed.

On the other side of the coin we acknowledge Seadhna Ryan, Richard Prior, Kevin Tansey and Harvey Myhill were unfortunate to be on the losing side in a rousing Leinster Minor championship game at the weekend.

Ballyboro

Pride of place this week goes to Christian Donlon and Jack Casey who were part of the Longford League squad who recorded a historic win over the North Dublin League in the Under 12 National Shield final played at Mullingar last Saturday. This was the first time a Longford league team won a national title, so many congrats to both Christian and Jack. The game finished 3-2, with Christian scoring the decisive goal with time almost up.
The under 14 team played very well in their Shield decider versus Abbey Rovers last week. They dominated possession for long periods but found goal scoring elusive, and they were edged out by the Ballinamore team. It finished 1-0 in favour of Abbey Rovers.
