County Longford Primary Schools Cross Country – Fermoyle

The rain stayed away, and the temperature was perfect for a great days cross country running as schools from all over the country competed in the Annual County Longford Primary Schools Cross Country on Saturday 28th September in Moyne Community School.

“Cometh the hour, cometh the man” to quote William Shakespeare or in the case of Fermoyle National School, “cometh the MEN”. The young men in question are the 3rd/4th Class boys who romped home to take first, second and third individual positions in their 800m race. On a very challenging course Rhian Hogan set a blistering pace and was tracked all the way by his class mates Oisín Dillon and Mikey Sorohan, who finally got the better of him in the final 150 metres with Oisín taking the gold, Mikey the silver and Rhian the pacemaker having led all the way forced to settle for the bronze medal. They were closely followed home by Tim Kenny in 9th position, these were the four scoring members of the winning team. They were well supported by their classmates, Daragh Donlon, Jack Cassidy, Josh Curran, Sean O’Dowd and Elliot Johnston in the minor positions. In the 5th/6th class boys race John Farrell was our first man home followed by Callum Farrell, Luke Johnston and Alex Mc Dermott who had his first outing in a cross-country race. Full results are not available yet, so we are not yet sure how this fine team fared out.

Not be outdone by the boys the 3rd/4th girls team had a great run with Emma Feeney leading home the team in second position to take the silver medal just narrowly missing out on the individual gold. Emma is a gutsy runner and her lack of experience in letting the leader get a little too far ahead meant she had to settle for second place when she believes she had the winning of it. Her teammates Hannah Farrell, Maria Forde and Lillie Dowd all finished strongly but we are not sure yet of the team position. Ellie May Hanley was out sole competitor in the 5th /6th class girls’ race and has to be commended for competing and finishing a long and tough course with no team support which is so important in cross country running. At least Ellie May had her school mates for support, unlike James who this scribe met , James told me he was the only competitor flying the flag for Legan school competing in the 3rd/4th class event Well done James and Ellie May and well done to all the competitors for making this a great event. Special thanks to all the parents for the support and to Paddy McPhillips, Leslie Finnan and the team of volunteers from Longford Athletic Club and Moyne Community School for managing to run off the event in a timely and efficient manner.

Under 12

Congratulations to the Under 12 panel and management on winning the Shane Kenny Shield Final with an excellent win over Southern Gaels in a very entertaining game played by two excellent and competitive teams.

Prior to the game a minute’s silence took place in memory of young man Cian Neary, Killashee who died last week. Cian was a former member of the Killashee and Southern Gaels clubs. Our minor and senior club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the Neary family, the Killashee and Southern Gaels clubs on their tremendous loss.

The Under 20 panel got their campaign off to a convincing start with a great win over a strong Clonguish side on Saturday night last. The next game takes place in Clonbonny when the team takes on Colmcille at 4.30pm. We hope a big number will turn out to support the team and management.

Ballyboro FC

The under 14 team bowed out of the Connacht (Sketchers Cup) when they were beaten 5-3 by A.C. Celtic. The first half was closely contested and finished 3-3 with the Ballyboro goals coming from Christian Donlon (2) and new signing Gabriel Klava. However, 2 goals in the first five minutes of the second half for the Athlone boys proved to be decisive. Ballyboro: Sam Glennon, Ruairi Carling, Cormac O’Dowd, Joey Trimble, Josh Crawford, James Mimnagh, Christian Donlon, Brandon McCann, Alex Forde, Gabriel Klava, Jack Phelan, Subs: Fionn Crossan, Kevin Donlon, Luke Cullen, Rory Killian.
