Table Quiz
Michael Cleary is taking part in this year’s Dublin City Marathon to raise funds for Join Our Boys and seeks your support. He is hosting a table quiz in the clubhouse on Friday night next 18th October. Table of four is €40 and all money raised goes to the Join Our Boys Fund. All are welcome.
Ghost Homeland
Local man Colin Carberry son of Barney and Nuala (Harold) who is presently residing in Mexico with his wife and two daughters has just launched a new book of poetry. Ghost Homeland is the latest collection of poems that takes him through his life growing up in Lanesboro along with the effects of events, especially in the north of our country, while growing up in the seventies and eighties. The collection also takes him through his journey of Latin America where he was eventually married and made his home in Mexico.
The litmus test of any writer’s success is the response by the readers and Colin has captured them globally to an enormous degree.
Colin since his first publication of The Crossing in 1998 has received many accolades and much notoriety worldwide because of his excellent work. This is Colin’s fourth collection of poetry while he is also translator of two books of verse. His poems have been translated into many languages.
Colin’s latest collection is further testimony to the very special talent that he is, and it is a collection well worth having amongst you book collections. Ghost Homeland is on sale in O’Brien’s and costs just €12.
The introduction to Ghost Homeland was scripted by Jack Harte and it is wonderful to see two of our very own literary geniuses together in this collection.

Sunday night Card Game
The weekly Sunday night game continues every Sunday night in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. As we go into the winter months this is the ideal way for any card player to spend a few hours on a Sunday night. The game starts at 8.30pm and you are more than welcome to go along and have a night of card playing and many a great chat.
The results of Sunday night last are: 1st Tom Nohilly and Pat Joe Fallon. There were four seconds. A play of was needed and after a nail-biting game Eugene Kelly and Barney Kenny came out winners. The last game was won by Tommy Fox and Pat Rock Snr. The raffle winners were Brendan Hanley/Aidan Carling/Jonno Byrne/Pat Joe Fallon. The game continues every Sunday night at 8.30pm sharp. All welcome. No partner needed. Refreshments served

The Collaboration group have spoken to Fáilte Ireland about people from their Accommodation Provider department to come to Lanesboro to speak to people that may be interested in becoming Accommodation Providers from single rooms, B&B, Guesthouses and hotels. As well as our local community this meeting is open to people from all surrounding parishes and towns.

Blood Donation Clinic
The next Blood Donation locally will take place the Longford Arms Hotel on Tuesday 29th Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st October. The clinic will be open from 4.30pm to 8pm.
The need for blood continues to increase and it is very important that you help by making your donation and encouraging others to accompany you to make your blood donations.
Breakfast Morning Returns
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns group are hosting their very popular Breakfast Morning in Lanesboro Parish Hall on Sunday 17th November from 9 30 am until 12.30 pm. Tickets will be on sale locally at the usual price of €10. This has been a very enjoyable event over the last few years. Your support would be very much appreciated. The funds raised go towards keeping the town and outskirts in top condition.

Defibrillator Training
A new course will commence in the near future and if you have not already done the course you must register your interest and if you need a refresher course you must also register your name. Superb Success
Superb was the accolade regularly used on Sunday on Sunday last as you met with people that were attending the Taste of the Lakelands. Over 40 producers and crafters filled the marquee behind the parish hall while cookery demonstrations continued on the hour by all award-winning local chefs in the parish hall.
This year the Lanesboro/Ballyleague Collaboration team were the conduit between Longford and Roscommon Local Enterprise Offices and their collective efforts provided a fantastic day for everyone. If evidence was ever needed as to the community spirit between both parishes and counties, then Sunday last was the ultimate proof that there is wonderful support for the tremendous work being done. Not too long ago there was to be no Taste of the Lakelands this year but with the combined effort it all came to pass.
For most of the day the cooking demonstrations were played out before a full house and the marquee hosting the producers and crafters was hugely busy. A guestimate by a person more accustomed to such events said that there was in the region of 4000 to 5000 numbers present during the day and to everyone of them we are so very thankful of their support and attendance in such huge numbers
The day was a wondrous in our community and there are many people to be thanked for the creation, delivery, presentation and stewarding – you all know who you are. We would like to congratulate and thank everyone for making Sunday so wonderful in our community. We look forward to seeing the Taste of the Lakelands once again on the banks of the Shannon in 2020.
Glitz and Glamour on Saturday
Cashel G4M and O’s are hosting a night of Glitz and Glamour in support of the Ollie Cox Injury Fund in the Local, Newtowncashel on Saturday night next 19th at 8pm.
This will be a lady’s night to remember with expert advice on style, hair, make-up, health and fitness.

Lough Ree AC
Congratulations to our athletes who represented Fermoyle School in Moyne on Sunday 13th October. Well done in the first place for turning up and then for taking on the cream of Connaught on a very tough and muddy course. The standard at provincial level was very high but our boys despite their lack of experience ran very well to finish in 7th team place from a field of 15 teams in the 3rd/4th Class race. The in form Oisin Dillon was first home again for the team followed by Rian Hogan who both finished in the top 20 out of a field of 110 athletes. Rian reversed the positions with Mikey Sorohan from the last day out, with Tim Kenny being the fourth man home following by Daragh Donlon and Elliot Johnston. Kudos to John Farrell who represented his school in the 5/6th class race on his own as he was the only one who qualified but fought as if his life at stake. All individual placings not to hand at the moment but may appear elsewhere in the paper. We look forward to other opportunities for these athletes to gain more experience at this level. Again, well done, we are all so proud of you for representing your school at provincial level.
Tidy Towns Lotto
The winning numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op on Tuesday morning 8th October were 2, 11, 20 and 30. There was nobody with the winning numbers and the jackpot pool has now risen to €5,800. The name on the tickets for the €50 prize Lisa, Ciara, Kevin and Aoife and the three winners of €20 each were Catherine Egan, c/o Credit Union, Anthony Casey, Stonepark and Rosaleen Egan, Derryhaun.

The 50/50 draw took place on Monday 7th October and the lucky winners of this week’s draw was the Rose Mulvey, Carrickedmond. The winning pool was €470. Thanks to the Rose for her weekly support of the 50/50.
There are four options when buying your tickets, (1) buy your €2 ticket, (2) 3 tickets for €5, (3) the green envelope where you pay €50 for a six-month term with one free draw and (4) the pink envelope where you pay €100 for a 12-month period with two free draws. Those tickets are available in any of the local shops and pubs or from any member of the club executive.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
As is the tradition the Lough Ree Golfing Society’s final outing of 2019 was to Strokestown GC last Friday 11th October. The golfers were very lucky with the day, no rain!! the greens were in excellent condition, the fairways and rough were very wet, but with placing everywhere this was compensated for. The scores returned were very good considering the time of year and conditions. Paul Taylor came 3rd with 32pts, 2nd Martin McAlister with 36pts, and Jimmy Flanagan in first place with an excellent 37pts. The front nine was won by Ronan Cullen with 18 points, back nine by Frank Costello with 16pts, longest drive Frank Costello and nearest pin Martin McAlister.
The Golfer of the Year was very close as predicted, with 2 pts separating the first 3 places, Mick Brennan had 33pts, Ronan Cullen 34pts, and Timmy Glynn retained the trophy with 35pts, congratulations
Timmy well played, it was great to see 24 members featuring on the GOY sheet, well done everyone. The Society would like to thank Strokestown GC, and Bernie Taylor and Ursula Burke for providing refreshments before and after play. For 2020 the Society is asking members to nominate 3 courses they would like to play, and they will try to book the 6 best.

Monster Tractor Run
A Monster Tractor Run will take place in Strokestown on Sunday 20th October organised by Mid Roscommon Vintage Club. The event is in aid of the Kilglass based Sick Children’s Fund. All tractors; modern and vintage and vintage cars are invited to the run. Entry €20. Please support this worthy cause.
The place where I was Born
An Áit ‘nar Togadh Mé – The place where I was Born is the latest publication by local Kenagh man Paddy Egan. This book takes a nostalgic look back at a way of life around Kenagh during the nineteen forties and fifties. Reading the book, I am sure will bring back many memories from their childhood and it is surely an essential read. The book is available in O’Brien’s.
Strokestown Further Education Centre
As a number of our community are eligible for places as the below courses it is important that they take advantage of these opportunities. The under 15s overcame a slow start to
eventually get the better of Gaels United by three goals to one. New signing

The under 13s remain unbeaten in the League following a

The under 8s really enjoyed their day out when their two
teams were involved in a blitz with Inny Rovers. Great enthusiasm was evident
with many of the players donning the Ballyboro colours for the first time. The
talent on view certainly augurs well for the future. Jay Flynn, Kyran Horohoe,
Ben Cassidy, Cian Shea, Joe Greally, Andrew Nolan, Niall Morgan, Matthew
Murphy, Donncha Farrell, David Kenny, Finn Fallon, Darragh Shanley, Tadhg, Shea,
and Malachy Martin were on duty for Ballyboro.
The under 10 team commenced the season
with flying colours when they had a big win over Killoe Celtic. Cathal Hanley, Alfie

The under 12s also performed extremely well when they defeated Ardagh

The under 14 team went down narrowly 4-3 to UCL. This
game could have gone either way but the UCL’s greater sharpness in front of

The club will be staging a National Schools Blitz in
early November on our brand new Astro Pitch. It is hoped that all schools in the
locality will take part in this novel event.
Fixtures: The under 9s will be taking part in a Blitz
at Ballymahon Astro on Saturday starting at 11am, along with the host team and
Inny FC. The under 11s play Inny FC in Streete on Saturday at 11am. The under
14s play Killoe Celtic on Sunday in Abbeycartron, kick off 11am. The under 11
girls play their first game of the season when they play Gaels United in
Drumlish Astro on Saturday at 12 noon.

St. Faithleach’s GAA
General Meeting: Many thanks to all who attended our general meeting last Friday evening in the clubhouse, it was fantastic to see so many people interested and contributing to the structure and initiatives of the club.
Table Quiz: Table Quiz takes place in the clubhouse on Friday 18th at 9:30pm. All proceeds to the Join Our Boys fund as Chairperson Michael Cleary takes on the challenge of the Dublin City Marathon in support of the fund. Table of four €40, all welcome.
U16 Girls: Hard luck to our U16 girls who lost out to St. Michaels in the D4B Final on Sunday morning. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the management team of Patricia McCormack and Siobhan Ormsby for their hard work and encouragement throughout the year and to the girls for their continued commitment.
Cards: Take place every Tuesday evening in the clubhouse.
