Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Sympathy

It is sad to relate the passing of former Green resident Noel Duffy on Monday 3rd February. Noel along with his late wife Gertrude came to live on the Green when Noel got a job inboard na Mona. Noel was a man with a quiet and gentle manner. He will be fondly remembered by all his former workmates and Green residents. In recent times lived in Longford Town. We extend our deepest sympathy to his sisters Deirdre and Eithne, brother Fr. Edmund, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Noel reposed at Glennon’s Funeral Home, Longford on Thursday where followed a service in celebration of Noel’s Life also in the funeral home. Afterwards Noel was laid to rest alongside Gertrude in Clonbonny Cemetery.

New Defibrillator

Fermoyle National School Parent’s Association are hoping to purchase a Defibrillator to be installed outside Fermoyle School in the coming year. This will be of great benefit to the students and staff attending the school, along with the wider Community who reside in the surrounding areas.

The Parent’s Association has already received a generous donation from Innis Ree Lodge Nursing Home and Lanesboro ESB, so the remaining cost to install this lifesaving device is €2,000. We are reaching out for your support to help complete the purchase of the Defibrillator.

If you could please help support this worthy cause with any donation or sponsorship, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please make contact with any of the following members of Fermoyle Parent’s Association if you are able to do so: Karen Johnston, Eilish Dillon, Deirdre Kenny, Audrey Sorohan, Sinéad Farrell, Serena Gibbons or Siobhan Curran. You can also contact via email at fermoyleparents@gmail.com

Thank You

The organisers of the Lourdes Pilgrimage Fund church gate collection last weekend would like to sincerely thank everyone who generously contributed to the collection. With the weather being so atrocious and storm Ciara was blowing strongly the sum donated was €532. If you did not get to contribute and you would still like to, you can leave your contribution into O’Brien’s Shop for collection or to Breda Moran.

Change of Date

Due to totally unforeseen circumstances the Éigse Pete Carberry weekend of Uilleann Piping and Irish Music had to be put back a week. The music weekend will now take place on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April in Lanesboro. The change of date is due to the announcement of the Longford County Fleadh Cheoil taking place on 18th and 19th April the original date of Éigse Pete Carberry.

Last year was a hugely successful inaugural Éigse Pete Carberry weekend remembering the piping of Pete Carberry. Musicians came from all over the country to celebrate the piping of Pete and the musical exploits of the Carberry family. Many of his children and grandchildren have followed the Irish Music tradition of Pete. The weekend music expanded from St. Mary’s Hall to the library, bars and shops creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout Lanesboro and Ballyleague. The uniqueness of the sound quality had to be heard to be believed.

We are expecting that the second Éigse Pete Carberry weekend will be another rousing occasion and it is most definitely be a weekend not to be missed. If you want to hear Irish Music in its purist state and played like you cannot believe, then you must be in Lanesboro for the weekend. As mentioned previously the weekend date had to be changed from the original date and it will now take place in Lanesboro on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April

The committee is receiving requests for all types of accommodation for the weekend and if you can help in putting people up you can drop an email to me joeaobrien@outlook.com  phone 0862460840 or call into the shop and leave your name.

Weekly Card Game

Election Distraction

Following the voting on Saturday in the General Election we are still on tender hooks as to the outcome of the election. The excitement of every count throughout Sunday and Monday is awaited with great interest in the hope that we will have one if not two TD’s in the county in the end. At the time of writing there is no conclusion to the counting.

A major distraction happened in the case of a young Ardagh/Moydow young man on Saturday night in the famous Millrose Games in New York. Cian Mc Phillips a young man was invited by games organiser Longford man Ray Flynn to take part. Cian showed the tremendous potential talent he is displaying on this side of the Atlantic when he showed a clean pair of heels to some of the very best Junior runners in the USA. Cian took part in the 1500m and came home very comfortably in a time of 4:10.95. We congratulate Cian on his tremendous achievement on Saturday and we wish him the very best for the future. As a community we are delighted that he is putting Longford county to the forefront in the world of athletics.

We look forward to great electoral results to finish off a great weekend for Longford.

Arrival of Quads

Diarmuid and Maithiú Hanly, Lehery spent a long night with one of the ewes on their family farm and their time and patience really paid off when the ewe had quads. It was the first time in many years that the Hanly’s had quads during their lambing season and it was great to have these two young budding farmers on hand to act as midwives. The pictures shows Maithiú (l) and Diarmuid (r) each holding two of the quads while the proud mother looks on.
