Tax Relief Scheme
A new five-year form is now available in the church porch for parishioners. This form when completed only has to be filled once every 5 years. This scheme is for PAYE taxpayers and proves to be of a huge benefit and a valuable source of income to the parish funds.
Please call into the church, take a form, fill it out and return it – your support will be invaluable in supporting your parish.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade Updates
Business Sponsorship
The parade committee is seeking the support of all local businesses by contributing €60 towards the sponsoring of the parade. Each year all of the local businesses continue to be very generous in supporting the parade. The committee would like to thank each and every business in advance.
Floats
It is time to get your application forms for your float back into the committee. The closing date for entries is Friday 14th March
Application forms are still available from Teresa Costello, Freda Connaughton or from O’Brien’s shop. The entry fee per float is €30.
Draw
To help pay for the insurance and other organisational costs there is a draw taking place on St. Patrick’s night and everybody is urged to buy a book of tickets to help defray the costs of hosting the parade. A book of three tickets costs just €5, your support will be of immense help. There will be five prizes of €100 for the five people drawn on the night. The draw will take place in Adie’s bar.
We look forward to another fabulous St. Patrick’s Day parade commencing at St. Faithleach’s GAA club and passing through Ballyleague and Lanesboro.
St. Patrick’s Day Schedule
As is the norm the St. Patrick’s Day committee have organised a schedule for the day. It will commence with a Traditional Mass in St. Mary’s Church at 11.30. This mass will include the parish choir, traditional musician and world champion dancers.
Prior to the start of the parade traditional musicians will converge on the viewing stand to perform and entertain the attendance while they await the arrival of the parade.
The parade will leave from St. Faithleach’s club grounds at 2.30pm.
The draw will take place in Adie’s at 10.30pm
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Patsy and Mags Glasgow, Kilnacarrow, on the death of Patsy’s mother Mrs Sadie Glasgow, Draperstown, Co. Derry on Saturday 22nd February.
Birth
Congratulations to Jenny and Joey Rooney, Ballyleague Court, Ballyleague on the recent birth of a baby girl.
Death
Following a long illness Pauline Gavigan, Ballagh, Kilrooskey, passed away peacefully on Saturday 29th February at the Galway Hospice. Pauline had fought her illness with a great strength and dignity. For the past 14 years she battled bravely with the support and help of her husband Colm. She will be always remembered for her warmth and friendliness. Her passing has saddened the hearts of everyone that had the pleasure to know her. She was a remarkable lady and was a true inspiration to everyone. To say that she will be missed, not only by Colm and her family, is an understatement, all our hearts are broken. The testimony as to how Pauline affected everyone was to be seen at the reposing of her remains in
Smyth’s Funeral Home on Monday 2nd March, at the arrival of her remains at St. Mary’s Church Ballagh and again at her Mass of the Resurrection on Wednesday. Cremation took place afterwards at Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan.
To her husband Colm, brother Peter Feely, sister Rita McKevitt, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
One end to the Other
The popular Paddy Dowd along with Fergal Darcy and Kieran Woods are undertaking a mammoth cycle from Lands End, Cornwall, England to John O’Groats, Caitness, Scotland. This cycle is from the most extreme point to the most extreme point in Scotland a distance of 1,574Km. The cycle will take Paddy and the lads 15 days from 2nd to the 16th April.
The cycle is in memory of Lilly Dodd and the funds raised will be shared between the Irish Kidney Association, Longford Branch and St. Christopher’s Services, Longford.
You are asked to be generous in your sponsorship. Sponsorship cards are available for sponsoring in O’Brien’s and other businesses in the town
Death
The death occurred on Tuesday 3rd March in the Rose Lodge Nursing Home, Killucan, Co. Westmeath of Jim Murphy, Gortgallon. He was predeceased by his son Gerry. Jim was one of the most travelled people in our community. Having reached the pension age, he made full use of the travelling benefits and Jim made the 32 counties his oyster making many friends along the way. Jim had the great talent of storytelling and he excitingly recounted many of the interesting stories of his travels along with many of the stories of old. Through his working days Jim worked with farmers and it was always said of him that he had a great eye in identifying quality cattle. In later years Jim was a regular in town and would have always been seen sitting on the windowsill of the yacht Bar where he would welcome conversations with local and stranger alike. Jim was one of our local characters and sadly they are becoming scarcer as time goes by. Since going to the Nursing Home Jim has been sadly missed in our community.
His remains reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home on Thursday last before being removed to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro. Following the Mass of the Resurrection his remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery. To his wife Bridie, daughters Olive and Miriam, sons John, Mike, Joe and Greg, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Éigse Peter Carberry
Pete Carberry was a legendary uilleann piper not only within Ireland but internationally. Pete lived in the Bord na Mona housing estate, Derryhaun outside of Lanesboro where his day job was with Bord na Mona. He was from a family renowned for the playing of Irish Music. The name Pete Carberry was synonymous with the playing of uilleann pipes where his skill and craft mesmerised everyone. Many of the extended Carberry family have followed in his footsteps and have formed an Irish music dynasty that has yet to be equalled.
The inaugural hosting of the Éigse Peter Carberry weekend took place during April 2019 in Lanesboro where the three generations of the Carberry family were joined for the weekend by some of Ireland’s foremost Irish musicians All through the weekend there were concerts, exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops as will be the case at this year’s event. Irish music will again overflow from St. Mary’s Hall, local hostelries and shops. The ambiance all over town will be terrific with the sounds of Irish traditional music spilling over from so many places.
Lanesboro, County Longford will more be the setting for the second hosting of the Éigse Peter Carberry weekend where once again a host of Ireland’s best traditional Irish musicians have committed to attending.
Éigse Peter Carberry will commence on Friday 24th April with the official opening ceremony in St. Mary’s Hall Lanesboro at 8pm and will continue through Saturday and Sunday with sessions, exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops throughout the weekend.
On Sunday in Ballyleague Hall the exciting Nóta Stóta will take place and it is a must for everyone to see and enjoy. Nóta Stóta is a group comprising renowned traditional musicians Conal Ó Gráda (flute, whistle, mouth organ) and Benny McCarthy (accordions, mouth organ) alongside inimitable puppeteer Des Dillon. The performance is entitled ‘Polkas, Puppets & Púcaí’ and is sure to produce some surprises as well as fantastic music.

New Play set for Lanesboro
A new play written by John McManus will be staged in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Saturday 4th April. The play is said to be scary and funny in equal measures. The play stars the one and only Seamus O’Rourke star of stage and Joe Duffy’s ‘Funny Friday’ accompanied by star of No Party for Billy Burns film Charlie McGuinness.
Once again, the Shannon Gaels have pulled off a major coup by attracting this play An Ogeous Brose to Lanesboro. As tickets are limited early booking is advisable. You can book by phoning Martina 086-3858934, call into O’Brien’s. Tickets are priced at €10 each and the show will commence at 8.30pm.

As part of Healthy Ireland at your Library, Lanesboro Library will host a very interesting talk on Memory Matters & Brain Health with Pauline Lee from HSE.

Guidelines for Helping Children with Anxiety
As part of Healthy Ireland at your Library, we are delighted to welcome psychologist Paul Marsden back to Lanesboro Library to give a very interesting talk on ‘Guidelines for Helping Children with Anxiety’. The talk will be very helpful to parents & teachers where children are anxious at home, with their friends, coming up to exam time etc. This is a free event, and all are welcome along on Monday 20th April at 7pm.

Foreign Currency & Used Stamps
We are still collecting unwanted foreign currency and old coins/notes in aid of Koins for Kids. The smallest donation can make a huge difference.

Clay Shoot
A Clay Shoot organised by the Killashee, Clondra and Tarmonbarry Shooting and Conservation clubs will take place at Templemichael Shooting Grounds on this coming Sunday 15th March. The shoot is in aid of the Ollie Cox Injury Fund and all shooters are asked to support this event.
There will be prizes galore throughout with €200 for High Gun, cash prizes on all traps, and a raffle with a number of spot prizes. The shoot starts at 11am and last cards at 3.30pm. There will also be refreshments served during the day.
Gun Club News
Clay Shoot
The club will travel to Lakelands Shooting Grounds Mullingar on the 21st March next for a member’s clay shoot. The competition will be run across sporting, ABT, DTL & OT layouts. All members in attendance are required to have necessary safety gear such as ear protection, safety glasses and baseball hat. We would hope to be on site at 11.30am in Lakelands. Could we ask local members to meet in Lanesborough circa 10.30am and arrange to carpool.
Easter Draw
The club will be holding an Easter Draw on Saturday night 11th April in Joe Farrell’s Pub with over €2,000 in prizes. Music will be provided on the night by Fran Deffew. We have received a huge response from the local community and further afield with regard to sponsorship of prizes. The club would like to thank all sponsors for their assistance to date. Tickets are currently on sale with club members and local businesses. All your support would be greatly appreciated.
Saint Patrick’s Day Parade
The club has decided to enter a float in this year’s local Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. We have received some great themes/ideas from members to date. We are hoping to finalise within the next few days.

Weekly Card Game
The results of the game played on Sunday night last 8th March are 1st Jack Bannon and Tom Skelly, joint 2nd Noel and Mick Maguire and Tom Mulvihill and Mickey Connaughton. Tidy Towns Lotto
The winning numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op on Tuesday morning 3rd March were 4, 8, 14, and 22. There was nobody with the winning numbers and the jackpot pool has now risen to €7,800. The €50 prize winner was Ollie Casey c/o Clarkes and three winners of the three €20 were Jean Fallon, Kilrooskey, Jenny and Freya Rooney, Ballyclare, and Eugene Mulvihill, Killashee.

The results of the St. Faithleach’s lottery that was held on Tuesday 3rd March are: numbers drawn 8, 14, 16 and 25. Ballyboro
The weather relented somewhat at the weekend to enable most games to go ahead though there were some postponements.
The under 14s certainly had their shooting boots on when they recorded an emphatic win over Killoe Celtic. After a sluggish start the team gelled together as the game progressed and Christian Donlon helped himself to five goals, while Eoin Cox and Joey Trimble scored a goal apiece. Ballyboro: Sam Glennon, Ruairi Carling, Cormac O’Dowd, Jack Casey, Josh Crawford, Luke Cullen, James Mimnagh, Alex Forde, Sam Murphy, Christian Donlon, Eoin Cox. Sub: Joey Trimble.
The under 12s played very well against a highly rated UCL side, and it was 3-3 as the game entered the closing stages. However, two late goals secured the points for UCL. Billy Murray (a stunning effort from halfway), Matthew Murray, and Oisín Dillon scored for Ballyboro. Team: Adam Farrell, Aidan Kelly, Rian Shanley, Ciaran McGloin, Billy Murray, Cody Phelan, Matthew Murray, Ethan Slattery, Rian Hogan. Subs: Ryan Mimnagh, Oisín Dillon.
The under 11s played a friendly game with The Football All Stars on Saturday. The All Stars come in the main from the Polish Community, and they certainly lived up to their name with a superb display of attacking football.
The under 15s showed impressive form in a closely contested encounter with Ballymahon. Both teams had chances to win but a draw was a fair result. Christian Donlon scored the Ballyboro goal. Team: Sam Glennon, Briain Farrell, Cormac O’Dowd, Jimmy Farrell, Conor Lyons, Jack Brogan, Ryan Byrne, Shane Ross, Ciaran O’Dowd, Matthew Heneghan, Jack McGloin. Sub: Christian Donlon.
The under 11 girls found a highly impressive Stonepark team, a tad too good for them even though the Ballyboro girls improved greatly in the second half. Team: Lillie Dowd, Ava Brehon, Anna Cox, Leah Mimnagh, Amy Burke, Marianna Donlon, Emma Feeney, Emma Dowd, Maria Forde, Kate Malone, Sarah Healy.
The under 8s fielded two teams in their Blitz with Melview and both teams displayed great enthusiasm with great passing moves and super scores to boot. Andrew Nolan, Chloe Kilcoyne, Niall Morgan, David Kenny, Tom Hession, Jay Flynn, Daragh Shanley, Tadhg Shea, Caden Donlon, Brian Raftery, Senan McHale, Joe Greally, Malachy Martin, and Adam Greally all showed great promise for the future.
Fixtures: A hectic weekend in prospect with seven teams in action. The under 12s play Stonepark on Abbeycartron on Sunday at 11am. The under 13s play Melview on Saturday in Abbeycartron, 11am kick off. The under 14s play UCL Harps in Dernafest, Lough Gowna on Sunday at 11am. The under 15s play Killoe Celtic at 11am on Saturday in Abbeycartron. The under 9s will be taking part in a Blitz in Dernafest on Saturday along with UCL Harps and Stonepark. The action gets underway at 11am. The under 11 Lions are at home to Kenagh Eagles on Saturday at 11am, while the Tigers travel to Ballinamore where they play Abbey Rovers, Kick off 12 noon.
Rathcline
Becoming a club member
This year the club is encouraging everyone to become a club member. Membership can be paid easily online at www.rathcline.gaa.ie. Just log on to the page and follow the link. Being a club member shows your support for you club and parish. It also gives you your identity as a paid-up member of the Rathcline club. The more that will join will instil a greater pride in our club and your community. Membership of Rathcline retains your connection in your club that you may have played with and/or just supported. With a big membership we are able to connect to all the new residents in our parish whether as players, parent or just supporters. Rathcline is a club of the welcomes and we encourage everyone to become a member of our club.
Non-playing membership is €20 and playing membership is €50.

Join Club Longford
Rathcline are well represented with Club Longford with John Finn, Seadhna Ryan and current county chairman Albert Cooney all founder members.
Club Longford in now up and running and everyone is encouraged to join up and help in the promotion of football and hurling in the county.
When you join Club Longford you will receive a Longford GAA hat and pen. You will be added to a text service and receive text alert with announcements about the senior team before league and championship games. You will be entered into a draw for Two Football and Hurling All-Ireland final tickets. Joining will cost you just €40 and you can do so by logging onto www.clublongford.ie
