Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
More and more littering
A few weeks back I mentioned the amount of littering on the Longford Road and the fact that somebody was throwing black sacks of rubbish onto the roadside. On Wednesday morning last a customer regularly traveling from Longford to Roscommon told me that there were another two bags thrown onto the road around the Rapareehill junction.
Up at Derrygeel where there is a partial layby a large amount of rubbish had been thrown out.
It is a despicable act to inflict this littering on any community and especially on the residents of the affected townlands that spend so much time in having their property and area in pristine condition. The residents of both areas take such great pride in their own area and do not need to have anyone desecrating it. Nobody nor any community should have to suffer at the hands of these litter louts. If you see anybody disposing of their litter along the roadside, please take the vehicle registration and report it to the local Gardaí.
Creating a Stir
I mentioned a few weeks back the community was to receive new Gardaí along with a new appointment to replace the retired Noel Egan. It has happened and the new Gardaí have become very visible throughout our community on both sides of the bridge and this is creating a huge amount of stir.
Judging from the amount of comment there is a great welcome for the new Gardaí. It is like our community of old when there were a similar number of Gardaí stationed at Lanesboro Garda Barracks. The additional feature of a Garda on his bicycle cycling all over the area is not only novel but something that is drawing hugely favourable comment.
The high visibility of Gardaí throughout is very welcomed and the great sense of security felt is worth more than its weight in gold. We hope that this deployment will continue, and our overall community can be policed in its current manner for many a long day. With the current numbers our now local Gardaí can be great backup not only to Longford but also Roscommon at their time of need.
We can only compliment Superintendent Jim Delaney for this insightful initiative and let him know of the delight within our community for the initiative and hope the increased numbers will become a permanent feature.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Gerry O’Connor, Kilrooskey, on the death of Noel Sweeney, Burntwood, England. Noel was brother of the late Carmel O’Connor.
Lanesboro Library

To help contain the spread of Covid-19, all branches of Longford County Library will be closed to the public until further notice. All meetings and events have been postponed until a later date.
Just a note to say that I am missing you all and hopefully it won’t be too long before our doors are open again and we are back to the hustle and bustle!

Death
The news broke on Saturday evening last 4th April of the death at his residence in Ballyleague of Paul Herraty. Paul at the time of his passing was surrounded by his family. Paul worked with Bord na Mona where he was a very popular member of staff until his retirement. He was a man of many skills and talents, he was an excellent butcher along with being a great craftsman. Paul has a wonderful skill when it came to the garden and the growing od vegetables. He won many awards for his vegetable produce. Almost two years ago at the prestigious Tullamore Show at a time he was not in great health, he was the winner in two categories and took fourth place in a third. He was meticulous in all his preparation and deliverance of all that he did – nothing was done without prior planning. Paul was a very pleasant man and a very obliging man. He would be the first to be of assistance when it was needed. His passing will leave a great emptiness in the hearts and minds of everyone that had the pleasure to know him. His warms and friendly smiling face will be sadly missed in our community.
Following prayers at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague his remains were removed to Cloontuskert Cemetery where his remains were laid to rest.
Due to the current restrictions on wakes and church services owing to the Coronavirus we all missed paying our last respects to her family, but we deeply feel the pain of her family. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Marion, daughter Sarah and sons Stephen, Peter and Mark, brother Patrick, sisters Angela, Christine and Judith, relatives and friends.
Death
On Monday morning last 6th April, we got the news that we had been fearing for the past number of weeks when the word came through of the death of Henry Kenny, Cloontuskert. Henry a native of Ballinahinch, Newtowncashel a son of the late Johnny and Brigid Kenny.
Henry in his younger days was a major feature in the successes of the Cashel team. He married Mary Gouldsbury, Killashee and they made their home in Cloontuskert. Henry embraced his new community and parish with open arms and there was precious little he did not do in support. His love of football was not diminished in any way and he immersed himself in the St. Faithleach’s club. There was precious little of his heart and soul he did not give to the club right up to the onset of his illness.
Henry worked with Bord na Mona up until his retirement. He was a noted character with words at will and always the life and soul of any gathering. Henry always gave a wonderful encouragement to everyone. He never left anyone that was in need without his support and assistance. Henry had a heart of gold and he will be sadly missed from the communities of Ballyleague/Kilgefin Cashel and Lanesboro/Rathcline. When we think of Henry, I am sure we will all have a smile because of all his devilment.

We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Mary, daughters Marie, Pauline, Claire, Ursula and Olive, sons Enda and Henry, brothers Sean, Mike and James, sisters Kathleen and Bernadette, his aunt Celine and uncle Gerdie, his 20 grandchildren relatives and legion of friends. Henry was laid to rest on Wednesday last in Cloontuskert cemetery for prayers in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. Following the prayers Henry’s cortège travelled around the perimeter of St. Faithleach’s pitches where a huge number had gathered at a social distance to pay their final respects to a great man.
Death
The sadness of Monday 6th April continued in our community when we learned of the death of Pat O’Sullivan, Lehery at his residence. Pat a native of Caherciveen, Co. Kerry was a man fiercely proud of his native county. He married local lady Josie O’Brien, Mahoraveen and when his teaching posts brought him to County Longford, he built his family home in Lehery. Pat taught in Moyne N.S., Cloontagh N.S. and he was Principal in St. Mary’s Boys National School on the Green until his retirement. Following his retirement Pat spent a lot of time tending to his garden where he was an avid gardener. He played a major role in all aspects of the Rathcline club as is the wont of a man born and reared in Kerry. Pat was natures gentleman of mild and kind-hearted nature. He was a wonderful parish man who involved himself in all the good things of the parish. Pat was the most helpful of men who was always willing to go out of his way to assist anyone in their time of need. He was a great support and confidant. He had the time of the world for everyone, his relaxed and easy manner had everyone in his company at their ease. In times past Pat loved nothing more than an evening of card playing in Adie’s with his old friends and they were the real characters. Pat was a keen dancer and when time allowed from his chores himself and Josie loved to travel. A testimony to the esteem Pat was held was to be seen at the guard of honours given to him as his remains made its way to St. Mary’s Church. Pat’s absence will leave a great void in the hearts and minds of all that knew him.

Following prayers Pat was laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery. We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Josie, sons Micheál, Fr. Brendan and Diarmuid, daughters Marie and Ciara, sister Maura, brothers Jack and Jim, 13 grandchildren, relatives and a host of friends.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs Sarah Hopkins, Lisnacusha and her family on the death of her sister Lizzy Keegan, Bohermore, Ardagh on Thursday last 9th April.
Defibrillator Certificates

Government guidelines for the bereaved
Funeral arrangements are made via phone calls or emails. A limit of 10 people attending any ceremony with social distancing and no associated gatherings. The use of condolences books is discouraged; where possible. Close relatives and contacts of the deceased should use their own transport. Families and friends of the deceased will not be able to have gatherings after the funeral service.
Mass Intentions
All Mass intentions which have been book can be rescheduled for a later date when the current situation changes.
Parish Newsletter
The parish newsletter will be printed each week and it will be available in the Church porch from Friday afternoon. The newsletter will also be available from Friday afternoon in O’Brien’s Corner Shop.
Collections
Fr. Reilly would like to thank everyone that has dropped in their collection envelopes into his house. The current crisis is impacting significantly on the Parish Financial Resources and the ability to meet responsibilities. Parishioners are encouraged to drop off offertory and priest’s dues envelopes into his house and NOT to put them in the box in the church porch.
Due to the shortage of collection envelopes there will be a revised payment scale. This will mean that some priests will receive only €600 per month.

The Trócaire collection has been deferred until the current crisis passes. If you wish, you can contribute in one of the following ways: online banking – sort code 93-80-92 account 88227020 or cheques can be posted to Trócaire Head Office, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, W23 NX63
Online donation fraud
You are asked to be vigilante if contacted by any online payment companies offering to set up parish donation services. In the current climate it would be prudent not to respond directly to these emails as requests may not be legitimate.
Tax Relief Scheme
If you have completed your tax relief form you are asked to return them to the box in the church porch.
Rathcline GAA
Death
The Rathcline club was greatly saddened to learn of the death on Monday last 6th April of our former Chairman Pat O’Sullivan. Pat played a major role in every facet of our club and was a tremendous guidance down through the years. Being a fiercely proud son of Kerry and Caherciveen Pat brought all the Kerry nuance with him when he came to reside in our parish. Pat was immensely proud of the achievements of his home club St. Mary’s Caherciveen who won the All-Ireland Junior club final in 2011 and the All-Ireland Intermediate club final in 2016. His family are steeped in St. Marys with his brothers, Jackie a former chairman and Jim a former selector. He was a calm and inspiring man as was to be seen by the number of successful students that emerged from the ‘Boy’s School on the Green’ where he was principal until his retirement. Pat gave us lots as a teacher, mentor, as a club official, a parishioner and member of many other committees and for that we will be eternally grateful.
It is coincidental that this year his son Micheál is the club chairman following his father’s footsteps and his grandson is a major player on the Longford senior county team. We have no doubt that Pat was incredibly proud of both Micheál and Iarla and no less proud of his other grandchildren Oisín, Ultan, Éabha, Laura, Anna, Bryn, Lucy Anne, Harvey, Josie, Maria, Muireann and Patrick most of whom are playing major roles in the minor, men’s and ladies clubs. As his remains left for St. Mary’s Church, Pat received a guard of honour from his neighbours, the Rathcline club and friends who were interspersed along the funeral route. Pat was laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery following prayers. There is no doubt about it that if there is some Irish music being played in heaven Pat will be dancing a Kerry Polka.
