When your luck is in
Last October local man Paul Hunt now residing in England entered a R. Kings draw for a car. Paul, son of Tony and Maura Hunt, Gortgallon, in that draw was the lucky winner of an Audi R8. In this September’s draw Paul was again an entrant and low and behold if his name did not come out again This time the first prize was a magnificent Ferrari 458 Italia. Congratulations Paul on your fabulous win and let’s hope the old adage comes true the good luck comes in threes.
Saddle Up
Rathcline Senior, Minor and Ladies clubs are delighted to announce the return of ‘Saddle Up for Rathcline’ for 2020. Building on the massive success of the event in 2019 in improving the facilities at Clonbonny the club has embarked on very ambitious plans for 2020. The club this year, with your support, is going to grow and enhance facilities for the club’s junior members. The club will be unveiling their ambitious plans within the next few weeks.
A main fundraiser for this project is the ‘Saddle Up’ and that will take place on Saturday next 12th September. The cycle route will be from Lanesboro along the Royal Canal up to Mullingar Pewter and back to the club house in Clonbonny. The cycle is over 120Km and there will be the option of doing the complete cycle or a 15Km or more relay stage. Teams of 4 costs €50 per person. Bicycles will be provided for those on the relays there will be return journeys back to your car.
The club is hoping that the cycle will have a unique part to it by it being the first to be able to cycle across the new walkway/cycleway. Presently the Born na Mona workers on the project are working very hard to be able to provide a route across. However, there is a huge amount of work to be done and all we can hope is that there will be a fine weather week ahead to give the workers the chance at finishing the route.

Autumn creeps in
With the national schools and Lanesboro Community College and second level schools now re-opened following their five month lay-off. With the boat traffic on the Shannon slowed to almost a trickle and with less traffic through the town it is a sign that summer is on the wane and Autumn is upon us once again.
With the lockdown happening almost 26 weeks ago and no foreign visitors that each summer brightens our town we thought that the summer season on the river and hence our community would be a very quiet one but it was not to be with the arrival of the Irish tourists to the river making it a lively place.
This year has been unique and with the weather getting cooler we are moving into a time like never before with great uncertainty. It will be a time of unpredictability and this will cause a concern for our old and vulnerable.
Autumn and winter always bring along the long nights, in normal times there would always have been a host of social outlets that people could have been involved themselves with but this autumn and winter is sure to bring a new norm for everyone. Covid 19 it seems will be with us for a time to come and we must ensure that whatever we can we must do in creating a practical solution to make sure our vulnerable do not feel isolated throughout these dark days and longer nights.
Death
There are very few times that an entire community can be grief stricken by the death of a person but this was the case when we learned the news of the death at Galway Clinic on Tuesday 1st September of Sean Farrell, ‘Iowa’ Ballyleague. There are not enough column inches for the accolades superlatives that I could deservedly write on Sean suffice to say that he was a marvellous person, husband, father and friend to so many. Sean was reared in a way of caring and warmth which he carried with him throughout his life. He joined the Gardaí a number of years back where his tour of duty over that time was legendary and where his deeds and actions were always done in a caring and thoughtful manner. After a time, away Sean and his wife Pauline returned to his hometown of Ballyleague, built their home on the family plot and reared their family. His demeanour made him instantly recognisable to young and old where the warmest of smiles and cheery hello were his trademark. Sean had been ill for a relatively short period of time. He bore his illness with a determination, strength and dignity that was he quality of the man. It is hard to imagine that a man that was so widely admired and popular was a quiet and reserved man whose time and energy was devoted to his family. He was a very well-read and learned man who had an insatiable desire for knowledge. The attendance at the removal of his remains from his home on Thursday morning to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague and again after his Funeral Mass bore ample testimony to the esteem in which Sean was held.
To his wife Pauline, son, Adam, daughter, Leah, relatives, many friends and Garda colleagues we extend our sincere sympathy
Drive-In Bingo
The St. Faithleach’s Drive-in Bingo will continue on Sunday next 13th September at the club grounds. There will be €2,400 in prizemoney to be won and the first game will start at 3pm. This is affording you the opportunity to pass a Sunday afternoon along with the chance of going home with some extra money in your pocket.

Vacancy
The Church View estate has an immediate vacancy for a Rural Social Scheme worker.
To qualify the person will need to have or have the use of a Herd Number and be in receipt of a social protection payment, i.e. job seekers allowance or farm assist. The hers Number can be in the parents or sibling’s name.
The vacancy will involve maintaining the estate, cutting and trimming grass, litter control, weeding and caring for plant beds etc.
The hours will be 19.5 per week or similar arrangement. Full stamp will be provided.

Towns Lotto Winner
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns lotto on was held Tuesday 25th August. After a long number of weeks rising by to €8,600the lotto was finally won. Brian Farrell, Lehery, was the lucky person with the four valuable numbers of 3, 9, 23 and 25. Congratulations Brian on your great win. The €50 prize was won by Celine Hester Knock and the three x €20 prizes were won by Joe O’Brien, Corner Shop, F&E Clyne, Corrigeen and Jimmy Tarmey, Cloontuskert.
The numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lotto on Tuesday 1st September were 7, 15, 19 and 26. There was nobody with these four numbers and the jackpot for the draw on Tuesday 18th August stood at €1,600. The consolation prize of €50 went to Ciara Feeney, Tullyvrane, and the three €20 prizes went to Martin c/o Mags, Martina Healy, Cloonadra and M&E Hanley, “The Turlough”.

Cloontuskert Cemetery
Due to Covid 19 restrictions sadly there will be no Cemetery Sunday this year.
We propose to have a Mass offered in the church at an available date.
The committee depend each year on your kind donations to maintain and offset the expenses associated in the upkeep of the Cemetery.
As there will be no collection in the Cemetery this year we appeal for your support, anyone who wishes to make a donation can do so by contacting any of the following Frank Curley Treasurer Sean Carty Johnny Malone Peter Cox or to our go-fund me page

Leaving Cert Results
The anxious wait of the past number of months came to an end on Monday last when the results of the Leaving Cert became known. I can only hope that everyone achieved the number of points that they required to further their education.
Not only was this a unique and historic Leaving Certificate with teachers and the Department allocating the points due to the Covid19 pandemic but it was a more stressful time for both the students and their parents. The days are much brighter ahead and let’s up that the students will flourish in their chosen paths.

The draw of the 50/50 took place on Monday night 31st August in the Yacht Bar. The jackpot pool stood at €198 and the winning ticket was in the name of Alan Fayne, Cullentra

Last Notification
As there was no Mass at Rathcline Cemetery to celebrate the life of the people buried there the annual collection for the upkeep was not taken up. If you would like to donate to the upkeep of the graveyard you can do so by dropping your contribution in and envelope into the box in O’Brien’s Shop.
Yemen Appeal
Listening to Mike Magan, Killashee being interviewed by Damien O’Reilly on CountryWide on Saturday morning could not but bring a great sadness to your heart when you heard of the living conditions and suffering that is happening in Yemen at the moment.
Mike had started a campaign and was asking for farmers to donate the “milk from a cow for a day”. Non-dairy and non-farmers are also invited to contribute in an effort to alleviate some of the need for food that is so badly needed in Yemen. Living Well
The next programme dates are the 9th,14th 22nd of September and 2nd November
If you are living with a long-term health condition you may be interested in doing the Living Well Programme. This is a six-week programme delivered in 2.5-hour weekly sessions where you will learn new skills to manage your health condition on a day to day basis. More now than ever it is important we look after are mental and physical health. Full training will be given to all participants in using the online platform

The Under 14s played Killoe Celtic in an entertaining friendly game on Sunday. The game finished 3-2 in favour of Ballyboro with Wesley Hughes (2) and Aidan Kelly the goal scorers. Ballyboro: Paulius Rasa, Brendan Mulvihill, Aidan Kelly, Wesley Hughes, Jack Beattie, Billy Murray, Euan Cullen, Rian Hogan, Luke Johnstone Murphy, Nathan McCloat. The new season kicks off on Saturday week 19th with games for the under 11s, under 13s, and under 15s.On Sunday 20th the under 12s and under 14s will be in action. Fun leagues for the under 8s, under 9s, and under 10s will commence on Saturday 26th.
