Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Tractor/Vintage car/Classic Bike Run

As the Covid-19 pandemic shows no sign of relenting the annual Lanesboro Tidy Towns Breakfast Morning has had to be cancelled. In an effort to raise funds whilst staying within the guidelines the Lanesboro Tidy Towns committee have come up with a three-pronged event on Sunday 25th October. There will be a Tractor Run, a Vintage Car Run and Classic Bike Run. The Tractors will assemble at St. Faithleach’s GAA grounds and start from there while the Vintage Cars and Classic Bikes will gather at Lanesboro Car Park and commence their route from there.

You are asked to donate some sponsorship to a participating tractor, vintage car or classic bike to help fund the Tidy Towns committee as they continue their excellent work in the area. I doubt if there is not a group in the community that the Co-Op/Tidy Towns have not helped out at one stage or another and this is a great opportunity to help back by supporting them in this tractor, vintage car and classic bike run.

Autumn Walks and Cycles

If this Covid-19 pandemic has taught us anything it is the number and beauty of the walkways and cycleways we have in our area. During the good weather during the lockdown a huge number of people, young and old, got out and discover the labyrinth of roadways/cycleways and were able to link many of them. Salmon’s Lane, Common’s North, Kilnacarrow, Bord na Mona bridge, the new greenway, the circuit through Bullockstown, the Cloonadra – Gardenstown loop, and those mentioned were the most populated while the cycleways were more extensive and naturally greater in number.

Last Sunday was a real pet day in Autumn with the midday temperatures at 17degrees and it was all that people needed to populate all the aforementioned walks and cycleways. People seemed to travel from many other areas to avail of our beautiful walks and it was especially pleasing that know that people are now recognising Lanesboro and Ballyleague as great places for walking and cycling.

Let us hope for many more of these ‘pet days’ so that many more people as well as our locals can get out and enjoy what we have in our community. Many more days at last Sunday would help in shortening the winter.

Roscommon Biography

The recently launched Dictionary of Roscommon Biography is continuing to sell well and it has almost sold its first full print. It is a book once you open it you will find it difficult to leave down. This huge volume priced at only €30 can be purchased in O’Brien’s while stocks last.

Bingo Drive-In Cancelled

Due to the alarming rise of people contracting the Corona Virus and the anxiety it is causing in all communities in the region, the Rathcline GAA club have deferred what would have been their very first Drive-In Bingo at their club grounds in Clonbonny on Sunday next 18th October.

The club would like to sincerely thank everyone that supported this initiative in a most positive way and offer their help and support. The club looks forward to your support to the drive-in when this pandemic has been curtailed and normal living can resume.

Former local Resident dies

It is with great sadness we record the death on Saturday 19th September of J.J. (Seamie) Carroll, Northampton. Seamie was formerly from Gardenstown and had emigrated to England a number of years ago. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Agnes, sons Vincent and Ivor, daughter Lorraine, his brothers Jack, Gardenstown and Cahal, Slane, Co. Meath and their families.

Longford International College

In the words of Vincent English President of Longford International College, “Longford International College was initially founded to provide courses to support professional footballers who are nearing the end of their contract, or who have left the game with any prior qualifications”.

In just six months the college has completed courses for 230 students from clubs all over the world. Premiership club Leeds United recognised the importance of the college and have had foresight for their players futures and have partnered up with the college and this alliance has taken the college to a new level of recognition.

The college has also partnered with the Swiss colleges James Lind Institute and Rushford Business School, where students can gain accreditations recognised throughout Ireland and Europe.

“LIC offers accredited diplomas, master degrees and one doctoral programme. The courser are delivered online and through online live webinars”.

To explore all the options you should go online to www.longfordcollege.com

Vincent English is a resident of our parish for a long number of years. He married Fermoyle native Marie Kenny and they returned from England to set up their family home in the parish where they have three children.

Vincent has always had a progressive view on life and with education being of specific significance. It is only fitting that it was himself that would have the foresight to set up Longford International College.

We wish Vincent and his staff the very best of luck now and into the future and there is no doubt that the College will blossom into something huge.
