Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

New Book

Many congratulations to local and prolific writer Jack Harte who recently launched his latest book ‘Two Plays’ published by Scotus Press. This book included two satirical comedies that had very successful runs in Dublin.

Jack has an uncanny knack of developing himself as he transitioned himself from school principal, to writing school textbooks, to the writing of many short stories, to a playwright in 2015 followed by a further four plays since then, including Lugh and Balor performed in Greek translation at the Ancient Theatre of Maroneia and the Theatre of Komotini in Greece (2016). Jack was founder of the Irish Writer Union and the Irish Writers Centre.

Death

It was with great sadness we leaned of the death on Friday 15th January of Patricia McDonnell, Curragh Rua. Pat as she was most commonly known came to live amongst us many years ago was predeceased by her husband Martin. Pat, a native of Summerhill, Co. Meath was a very popular figure in the community. She was a character of note and always had the quick response to the banter that was going on around her. Pat, no matter where she was had a great presence and her forthrightness endeared her to everyone that came to know her. She always had a warm and cheery welcome and through the few years of her illness she was never heard to complain, nor did she ever lose the warm and cheerful smile. The impact Pat made in the community was clear to be seen by the large number that were genuinely upset at her passing. She will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure to know her.

Pat’s remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church on Tuesday followed by removal to Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan for cremation.

Pat will be sadly missed by her daughter Stephanie, sons Martin and Jed, sister Marie, extended family, relatives and friends to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.

Death

It was with great deep regret we learned of the death on Saturday 16th January at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda of J.P. O’Boyle, Ballyleague. J.P. a native of Castlebar was predeceased 13 years ago by his late wife Kathleen to whom he was totally devoted to and he was by her side right to the end. Many years have passed since he came to a new job with Bord na Mona where he worked in administration until his retirement. Initially the O’Boyle family lived on the Green before moving to their newly built house in Ballyleague. J.P. was a man who was meticulous in everything he done where he left nothing to chance. He was very popular amongst his workmates and throughout our community. He was a quiet gentleman and he always had that friendly and welcoming smile that went with his warmest of welcomes. J.P. was a great family man and had a deep and great interest in education and was a great encouragement to his growing family in them achieving the best. J.P. had a great love of the game of golf and he was a one of the leading lights at Longford Golf Club, in itself no mean feat. He attention to detail on the golf course was clear to be seen in his game where he was for many many years a single handicapped member of the club. J.P.’s passing will no doubt sadden the hearts of everyone that knew him and leave a void in our community.

His remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Tuesday last for his Funeral Mass and was then laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery alongside his wife Kathleen. To his sons, Brendan and John, daughters Joan and Anne, sister Nancy, relatives and many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
