Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 9th September 2024

Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Cloontuskert Cemetery

Following an impromptu meeting called, last weekend, to discuss the resignation of the Cloontuskert Cemetery committee. It was expected that a small number would attend as the meeting was called at short notice. Showing the depth of feeling and the emotions generated by the resignations the attendance numbered well over 100 people. The feeling of the meeting was that the committee should withdraw their resignations and return to their excellent work in the two cemeteries. Seeing the response of so many to turn up on such short notice and make their support known the committee agreed to return to work in the cemetery.

Be extremely vigilant

On Wednesday last at around 2pm a black car was seen circling the Cloontuskert estate. A short while later it was seen parked on the roadway leading down to Cloontuskert cemetery. At that time there was one person in the car and two others at the back door of a house. Later it was discovered that the same house had been broken into and a sum of money taken. If anyone has any information on that incident they are asked to contact the Gardaí in Roscommon 090 66 38300

In recent times I have been writing about the need to be vigilant as there appears to be a lot of suspicious activity and damage being done locally. Please be very vigilant and on your alert at all times and don’t hesitate to ring 999 if you see anything untoward at any time.

Local notes

Anybody that wants items included in the local notes is advised that they have their note with me on a Sunday night at the very latest. This is to ensure inclusion in the coming weeks notes.

Shamrock 165

Shamrock 165 is a trilogy of books written by Sligo native Gavin Walsh on the first ever Aer Lingus plane crashed on Snowdonia National Park, Wales

This is the true story of both the Irish nation’s and Aer Lingus first fatal crash, which occurred in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales on Thursday 10th January 1952. Gavin spent 13 years researching, writing and compiling the ‘Shamrock 165’ trilogy. His final results are diametrically opposed to both the British and Irish Government’s official investigation findings. The author has accumulated more than 1000 never-supposed-to-see the light of day documents; many of which illustrated in the 3 volumes. The story also details the lives of all the 23 victims who perished on that night almost 73 years ago.

On board was local Rathcline lady Evelyn Belton which makes this book of great interest to locals.

This is a fascinating trilogy of books delving into every aspect of the crash and a tremendous read. The books can be bought in O’Brien’s at a cost of just €65 for the set of three or individually Book 1 at €25, Book 2 at €20 and Book 3 at €30.

Vintage Steam Engine to Feature at Upcoming Show

The Mid-Roscommon Vintage Club is arranging a special appearance of a historic steam engine at the Strokestown Agricultural and Industrial Show on Saturday next 14th September.  This impressive machine, weighing approximately 20 tonnes, was once used to steamroll the roads of County Longford until the early 1950s. The engine is owned by Mr Gerry Bratten from Killoe, Co. Longford.

On the morning of the show, the steam engine will be transported on a specially modified carrier to Church Street, where it will be carefully unloaded and driven through the town to the grounds of Strokestown Park House. The engine is powered by a coal-burning furnace that heats water to produce steam, which then drives the pistons. It will be fired up and ready for its journey down Church Street on Saturday morning.

Steam power, first discovered by the Greeks in the 17th century, was revolutionized in the mid-18th century by Scottish engineer James Watt, who developed the first external combustion engine. This innovation soon powered factories and ships, and by the 19th century, steam power had transformed the transportation system with the development of railways and steam-powered trains. Even today, fossil fuel and nuclear power stations use similar steam-driven technology to generate electricity.

The steam engine will be on display at the vintage exhibit throughout the day at the show. In addition to the steam engine, the Mid-Roscommon Vintage Club will showcase a variety of tractors, cars, and machinery. Later this month, the club will also host the Sliabh Bán Harvest Festival, a highly anticipated event featuring a wide array of attractions. The festival is set to take place at the foothills of Sliabh Bán on the L1425 (Kilrooskey Road) on Sunday, September 29—a date not to be missed!

The admission to the Festival will be €10 with children going in free.

Celebrated local author Jack Harte will be in attendance to officially launch the new book.

The book covers many aspects of the communities’ history from both sides of the Shannon – Lanesboro – Longford and Ballyleague – Roscommon.

Much is written about the Fight for Independence and many of the skirmishes and actions in both Longford and Roscommon are fully detailed.

Other chapters cover Fair Days and regattas that were once an annual feature of the community. Prominent locals and important visitors are also featured as is the varied local architecture and sections covering the river and the bridge.

A total of 33 chapters give a comprehensive history of the area, with 100’s of photographs to enhance the stories.

The book is not all John’s work. Major contributions have been made by Lanesboro and Roscommon’s own Tommy Murray and by historian Seán Ó Súilleabháin. The book has been edited by Andrew Knowles.

Priced at €20 the books will be on sale at the launch and afterwards at O’Brien’s Shop and Newsround in Longford and Roscommon.
