Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Death

Coming from the townsland of Kilcurry, Colehill to live on the Green with her late husband Willie who worked with Bord an Mona, Rose Farrell really made this town and community her own as did the community make her one of our own. It was with great sadness we learned of the death of Rose at Innis Ree Nursing home on Wednesday 17th December. She was widowed back in 2001 when her husband Willie passed and she was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Mary Ann McCormack, her sisters Eileen and Maura and her brothers Peter, Andrew, John Joe and Pat. Rose was renowned as a lady never to mince her words and her honesty was equally matched by her loyalty and her friendship. She was a lady with a great spirit and a great enthusiasm for life and always wanted the best for her family and all those around her – her encouragement very often drove others on to achieve when there may have been a little doubt. When they say ‘you should not give it unless you can take it’ this epitomised Rose as she was always one to let the joke fall on her as fast as her having a laugh at you. Visiting the Farrell home you were greeted with great warmth and openness and you would never be allowed to leave without sampling her home baking along with the cuppa.  Rose was a woman of great character, with a great strength of character, a most loyal of neighbour and friend and when you knew you had her on your side you knew you wanted for nothing more. She was a hard worker throughout her life and during the time of the mushroom growing tunnels on the Longford Rods she worked there and was a respected worker. She love play cards and had a great love of the game of bingo as well as being a keen follower of TV soaps with Coronation Street been her particular favourite.  The passing of Rose leaves us with a great emptiness but her memory will always bring smiles as we remember her many great times in our company.

She reposed in Glennon’s Funeral Home on Friday 19th and on Saturday she was removed from her residence to St. Mary’s Church for the Mass of the Resurrection. Following Mass she was laid to rest alongside Willie in Clonbonny cemetery.

To her daughter Mary, her sons Willie, Padraig, Tomás and Anthony, her sister Margaret, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Be part of the Fire Service team

Recently we saw a number of high profile, tragic and critical accidents occurring both north and south of the border we have seen the essential and critical need of first responders of the fire service and the wonderful and vital work that they do.

Being first on the scene, the training that the Fire Brigade members receive, teaches them to respond and deal with the tragedies unfolding as well as stabilising those that are in need of help until the medical services arrive.

The training the fire service team receives covers a wide range of emergencies, including fires, road traffic collisions, floods, and incidents involving hazardous materials. They are also involved in rescue operations, such as water rescue, general rescue, and extrications from vehicles. Beyond emergencies, fire services work in prevention, community education, and can act as first responders for medical situations.

Long gone are the days of just putting out fires and the training received shows that the training is for all eventualities.

Working on the local fire brigade service is not just something taken lightly by the local team; it is a commitment by all its members to our local community and they give up their valuable time to be at the ready to help any one of us in our hour of need. The local team is one of remarkable comradery with people from all walks of life giving of their time for us in their catchment area.

At present there are a few vacancies for men or women at the Lanesboro Fire Service and if you feel you would like to be part of this remarkable team you should apply at www.hrrecruitment@longfordcoco.ie

There are a few requirements in relation to response time but it should be no problem for those in the Lanesboro, Ballyleague, east Killashee and Derryhaun, Cloontagh area. For the younger generation there is a great trend for them to be in the gym and this physical fitness regime makes them ideal candidates to become members of the fire service.

Full and intensive training will be given to the successful applicants and even though this is a part-time job the remuneration is excellent with excellent opportunities for advancement to other opportunities.

Support and Help build an Athletic Track

Roscommon Athletic Club based in Roscommon Town has embarked on a huge project to create Roscommon’s first athletic track. The track will be a competition standard, 8 lane 400 metre track and will help greatly in the development of runners and sports people in the wider hinterland.

The club is seeking your support for their fundraising draw as they have to fundraise €1millon to see the project to it conclusion. With an identified site readily available they would urge everyone with an interest in athletics to support their upcoming draw.

There is are two incredible top prizes up for grabs, sponsored by two of the leading Irish companies based in Roscommon Town. Lidan is dedicated to providing high-quality modular buildings and they will supply a €65,000 stunningly designed and crafted Garden Room and nationally and internationally acclaimed Mark Lohan Kitchens will supply a €25,000 Bespoke Kitchen.

Get in touch via email to longfordassociationlondon@outlook.com This email address can also be used for further information and also for the booking of tickets.

If you would like to support or help in any way, big or small sponsorship is always welcome , any money raised on the event is shared throughout the year with various charities in both London  and Longford .

Great news for Lanesboro

While casually browsing through Facebook over the Christmas I noticed a message from Sean Mimnagh informing us of a windfall announcement for Lanesboro made just prior to Christmas with the announcement that funding has been secured for two exciting projects: €109k for the restoration and re-instatement of a sensory garden and community hub off Main Street – this project was well near completion before Storm Eowyn earlier in the year practically destroyed the brainchild of Stephen Dowd and almost seen his project completely destroyed. Hopefully this funding will see the project come to its final conclusion.

There was a further announcement of €49,500 to prepare and submit a planning application for a new Eco Park on the banks of Lough Ree. This proposed project has been gaining momentum over the past year and it is great to see that the funding has been received to help   complete the plan and see it to fruition in the very near future.

Finally, I would like to wish both our local county councillors Sean Mimnagh and Mark Casey a very happy New Year and thank them for their excellent work for our community over the past year and look forward to their support for the community in 2026.

With the Christmas time speeding in on us it has been decided to put the AGM back until the New Year with the new date set for Thursday 15th January in the Clonbonny clubhouse with a start time of 8.30pm.

What will be celebrated is a fabulously successful 2025 on the playing pitch for the young underage players of the club.

Everyone is invited to come along to Clonbonny on Thursday 15th January and join with the club in celebrating a great and electing a new committee for the coming year. We hope there will be a big attendance to acknowledge the wonderful work done by the executive, the coaches and the young players. There were a great number of spot prizes on the night and the club would like to say a huge thanks to all who donated prizes for the night.

As a mark of respect to the late Jeaff McGann fundraising tournament the club decided to pass up last Saturday night to allow their supporters and players support the fundraising event.  The Joker competition will re-emerge this coming Saturday night 3rd January with the great sound of Sean Hussey entertaining. The Joker will now become a Saturday night fixture in the clubhouse where it is hoped that it will create a Saturday Night Fever as the Joker prize money continues to grow.
