Lanesboro Ballyleague notes
Death

Despite his trial and tribulations when asked as to how he was the retort always came back ‘living the dream’ a saying that we will never hear again from the lips of Gavin O’Donovan. Gavin who passed away on Wednesday 10th December of St. Mary’s Terrace, Ballyleague was son of the late and very popular parents Denis and Betty O’Donovan. When we remember Gavin growing up we remember a bright, smart and highly intelligent young man who along with his neighbour and friend loved to mess around with cars and the louder the engine noise the better. His educational learnings led him to many high and influential positions before at a young age he was struck by an illness. He returned to his family home base where he lived for the past number of years. In latter times he could be seen wearing a crash helmet as a precaution as he told me it was a protection for his head as he had a tendency of falling due to his illness. Gavin had a wonderful positivity and he always spoke with a great exuberance where each day was brighter than the last. He loved to converse on all things local and he always spoke highly of his home community. Gavin will be greatly missed by us all and his passing will leave a great emptiness on the street and in our hearts and minds.
A gathering to celebrate Gavin’s life took place in Smyth’s Funeral Home Roscommon on Tuesday last. It will be followed by a private cremation.
To his son Sam, daughter Erinn, sisters Denise, and Maria, grandchildren Wren, Mara and Owen, daughter-in-law Holly, son-in-law Sean, niece Saoirse relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Marrying a local woman, a member of the Garda Siochana and making Lanesboro his home this popular man quickly became one of our own. Pat Prior, Rathcline Road, passed away in Our lady’s Manor Nursing Home, Edgeworthstown on Saturday 13th December. He was deceased by his wife Bridie, his daughter Helena, his parents Patrick and Lena and his brothers John, Hugh and James. Pat a native of Swanlinbar, Co. Later on he was transferred to the Roscommon Division where he was station in Boyle, Elphin before finding his forever base in Roscommon Town. Pat rose through the ranks where he achieved the rank of Detective Sergeant. Known as a compassionate and understanding Garda he was also known for his diligence, high rate of detection, his direct approach and a man that always spoke his mind. Pat became a very popular figure in the force and also in his adopted home of Lanesboro. He was a wonderful conversationalist and he was an avid reader. It was always privilege to have so many great chats when he called in to buy his paper where his wide range of sporting and world affairs knowledge. Pat loved to follow the fortunes of his native Cavan county football team and his historic knowledge of Cavan football was impressive. He was a keen gardener and in his spare time he loved to spend as many hours as possible in the garden. Pat married local woman Bridie Murray and they were a very recognised as very elegant couple.
Pat’s remains reposed in Glennon’s Funeral Home on Tuesday last. Mass of the Resurrection took place in St. Mary’s Church, on Wednesday followed by his burial alongside his wife Bridie in Rathcline Cemetery.

Death

It was cards five nights a week and the other two nights were spent at Bingo; Peggy was never idle until she suddenly passed away on Saturday last 13th December in the care of Galway Clinic following a short illness. Peggy Moran, Strokestown Road, was predeceased by her husband Phonsie, parents Patrick and Mary Kate and her sister Monica. Born and reared in Gaigue, Ballinamuck from where she moved to England and then along with her sisters she came to work in Ballyleague and Lanesboro where she met her husband Phonsie and they set up home in Cloontuskert before building their forever home on the Strokestown Road. Peggy had that inimitable north Longford spirit and she was very proud of her Ballinamuck heritage. She was of old stock and old ways and she had an incredible dive to achieve and move forward when others would call stop. Peggy loved the land, animals and farming was a driving passion for her and she also loved cooking and baking. Never one to be behind anything, she led from the front such was her personality. She had a great way with people and she really loved to stop and chat. She was an encouraging lady and she was always encouraging others to achieve to their fullest potential. Peggy had a great pride of place and community whether it was our community here of her old Ballinamuck community and her county of Longford. She loved to have her family around her whether it was immediate or extended and she welcomed everyone with open arms and her broad beaming smile. While on her farming duties she rarely missed a day visiting Rathcline cemetery. She loved to garden as can be seen from her meticulously kept garden and she loved to watch a wide variety of sport.
Peggy’s remains reposed at her residence on the Strokestown Road on Wednesday last. On Thursday following her Funeral Mass in St. mary’s church, Lanesboro, she was laid to rest alongside her husband Phonsie in Rathcline cemetery.
We extend our deepest sympathy to her sons Noel and Sean, her sisters Maureen and Kathleen, her brother, Packie-Joe, daughters-in-law Emer and Olivia, grandchildren Cian, Gavin, Bryan and Lauren, relatives and many friends.

Be part of the Fire Service team
Recently we saw a number of high profile, tragic and critical accidents occurring both north and south of the border we have seen the essential and critical need of first responders of the fire service and the wonderful and vital work that they do.
Being first on the scene, the training that the Fire Brigade members receive, teaches them to respond and deal with the tragedies unfolding as well as stabilising those that are in need of help until the medical services arrive.
The training the fire service team receives covers a wide range of emergencies, including fires, road traffic collisions, floods, and incidents involving hazardous materials. They are also involved in rescue operations, such as water rescue, general rescue, and extrications from vehicles. Beyond emergencies, fire services work in prevention, community education, and can act as first responders for medical situations.
Long gone are the days of just putting out fires and the training received shows that the training is for all eventualities.
Working on the local fire brigade service is not just something taken lightly by the local team; it is a commitment by all its members to our local community and they give up their valuable time to be at the ready to help any one of us in our hour of need. The local team is one of remarkable comradery with people from all walks of life giving of their time for us in their catchment area.
At present there are a few vacancies for men or women at the Lanesboro Fire Service and if you feel you would like to be part of this remarkable team you should apply at www.hrrecruitment@longfordcoco.ie
There are a few requirements in relation to response time but it should be no problem for those in the Lanesboro, Ballyleague, east Killashee and Derryhaun, Cloontagh area. For the younger generation there is a great trend for them to be in the gym and this physical fitness regime makes them ideal candidates to become members of the fire service.
Full and intensive training will be given to the successful applicants and even though this is a part-time job the remuneration is excellent with excellent opportunities for advancement to other opportunities.

St. Vincent de Paul Appeal
“The Wonder of Christmas” is the theme for the 2025 SVP Christmas Appeal. Too many families – young and old, ‘wonder’ does not mean excitement or happiness, it starts a sad question – ‘I wonder will I be able to feed my family at Christmas or indeed throughout the year’. So many households are struggling to meet their daily needs – from families with young children to people living alone. From your donations, no matter how small, the local branch of SVP will assist local families. Envelopes can be obtained from the church porch or from O’Brien’s and donations can either be left in with your weekly offerings, left into Mairéad in the presbytery or into Joe & Martina O’Brien, Corner Shop. All donations, no matter how small, will be gratefully received. Thanking you for your continued support

Lanesboro man won an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Medal
Football has always been the big game in County Longford ever since the GAA was founded in 1884. The parish of Rathcline was to the fore from the very beginning. Indeed, Rathcline Honest John Martin’s contested the first ever Longford Senior Football Final in 1890, losing narrowly to Colmcille. Strong and all as the game is in Longford, the nearest the county team ever got to a senior All-Ireland was in 1968, when they won the Leinster Championship for the one and only time, losing to Kerry by two points in the semi-final. Just one Longford man holds an All-Ireland Senior Football medal. Tommy Banks from Dublin St in Longford played at left full forward on the Dublin team that won the 1942 All Ireland.
What a surprise it is then to learn that a Longford man did win an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship medal. That man was Tom Belton from the townsland of Rathcline, and he played for the Dublin team that won the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final of 1889. The dramatic story of Tom Belton’s success, and his death less than ten years later, is told in the recently launched 2026 edition of Teathbha, the Longford Historical Society’s annual journal. The story was researched and written by Seán Ó Súillebhain, the author of Longford’s Republican Story. Now in stock are copies of Teathbha 2026 that can be got in O’Brien’s, Lanesboro.
