Death

From Strokestown to Drumlish, to England to Canada and to find a final resting place in Lanesboro were the life travels of Leona Cox, when along with her husband Ned they made their home Tullyvrane in the former home of Ned’s sister Mae and the late Frank Casey. Leona passed away on Thursday 25th December was predeceased by her parents Charlie and May Lohan, Moher, Strokestown. Lena was a nurse by profession and she epitomised the acknowledged vision of a nurse as a compassionate, kind, gentle, skilled, trustworthy heroes who are the backbone and of the healthcare system. Since settling in Lanesboro Leona worked in St. Joseph’s, Longford and Innis Ree Nursing Home where she was received the highest of acclaim from staff and residents alike. She had a wonderful community spirit and she was very involved with the local Social Service Whist nights and also with the church. She was a lady of great style and elegance she carried her style and elegance in her own inimitable quiet and gentle manner. Leona was a caring mother and loving mother and grandmother especially to her three grandchildren that she doted upon. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her and especially by the many that have spoken so highly of her.

Leona reposed in Glennon’s on Monday 29th December. On Tuesday the Mass of the Resurrection took place in St. Mary’s Church and following Mass she was laid to rest in Clonbonny Cemetery. To her husband Ned, her son Aron, her grandchildren Amy, Sarah and Daniel, daughter in law Patricia, her sisters Mary, Loretta, and Charlette, her brother Tom, Mae Casey, Dette Cox, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Cloontuskert Cemetery committee win again

Cloontuskert Cemetery Committee were recently awarded first prize in Roscommon County Councils Greener Spaces awards for the Tidiest Burial Ground in County Roscommon for 2025.

The Committee is delighted to have won the award again for the second year in a row. The committee extends a huge thank you to Roscommon County Council for the recognition and to everyone who put in the hard work in maintaining the cemeteries.

2025 was a very busy year for the Cemetery committee. Our year started with the completion of the landscaping of the New Cemetery including the sowing of over 5,500 daffodil bulbs. The highlight of our year was the upgrading of our mass enclosure with the unveiling of the permanent glass enclosure for Cemetery Sunday at a total cost of just over €10,000.

This truly is a testament to the generosity of all your support for our projects. We just want to extend our sincerest gratitude to everyone who played a part in this.

For 2026, we are delighted to announce we have secured necessary funding to complete the upgrade of the New Cemetery. These works will include the finishing of the concrete works on the left side of the New Cemetery and the replacement of the tarmacadam walkways with a new surface equivalent to the surface on the car park at a cost of €25,000. The completion of the upgrade to the Cemetery will see the committee achieve its goal of making the Cemetery 100% accessible for everyone both wheelchair and age friendly with smooth surfaces throughout.

The total upgrade of the Cemetery works including the access road and car park resurfacing cost €132,655 which was made possible thanks to grant funding, sponsorship and your generous donations.

Further to this, with the New Cemetery becoming accessible to all the  committee are hoping to make 2 wheelchairs and a coffin trolley available on funeral days, these wheelchairs will be available if required for people with restricted mobility or someone who may wish to sit at their loved ones graveside on funeral days. the coffin trolley will allow for the coffin of your loved ones to be walked to the graveside where a family wish to do so rather the carrying of the coffin. We are putting out this idea with the hope of gaining sponsorship for some of this or all. If anyone requires any further information or may be aware of a company or individual who may be able to assist us in securing the above wheelchairs and coffin trolley for the Cemetery, please contact any committee member.

Further works in 2026 will include a project on the entrance to the Old Cemetery. Further information will be made available at a later date but we hope to have this completed by Cemetery Sunday in August.

The Committee wishes to thank everyone who contributed to the upkeep of the Cemetery, your support for our projects are greatly appreciated.

Finally, we wish each of you a happy and healthy new year. See attachment

Be part of the Fire Service team

Recently we saw a number of high profile, tragic and critical accidents occurring both north and south of the border we have seen the essential and critical need of first responders of the fire service and the wonderful and vital work that they do.

Being first on the scene, the training that the Fire Brigade members receive, teaches them to respond and deal with the tragedies unfolding as well as stabilising those that are in need of help until the medical services arrive.

The training the fire service team receives covers a wide range of emergencies, including fires, road traffic collisions, floods, and incidents involving hazardous materials. They are also involved in rescue operations, such as water rescue, general rescue, and extrications from vehicles. Beyond emergencies, fire services work in prevention, community education, and can act as first responders for medical situations.

Long gone are the days of just putting out fires and the training received shows that the training is for all eventualities.

Working on the local fire brigade service is not just something taken lightly by the local team; it is a commitment by all its members to our local community and they give up their valuable time to be at the ready to help any one of us in our hour of need. The local team is one of remarkable comradery with people from all walks of life giving of their time for us in their catchment area.

At present there are a few vacancies for men or women at the Lanesboro Fire Service and if you feel you would like to be part of this remarkable team you should apply at www.hrrecruitment@longfordcoco.ie

There are a few requirements in relation to response time but it should be no problem for those in the Lanesboro, Ballyleague, east Killashee and Derryhaun, Cloontagh area. For the younger generation there is a great trend for them to be in the gym and this physical fitness regime makes them ideal candidates to become members of the fire service.

Full and intensive training will be given to the successful applicants and even though this is a part-time job the remuneration is excellent with excellent opportunities for advancement to other opportunities.
