Lanesboro Ballyleague notes
A very important Press Release for our communities of Lanesboro and Ballyleague
Community Briefing Sessions on Future of Ballyleague and Lanesborough
If we keep doing things the way we’ve always done them, we know where it leads!
It leads to more people leaving our area, fewer opportunities for young people, more division between groups competing for limited resources, and an economy that struggles to grow.
Doing nothing isn’t the safe option anymore. It’s the one option that guarantees more population decline, more social division and continued economic stagnation.
That’s why a group of local volunteers, businesses and community organisations has been working together to create a new Ballyleague–Lanesborough Community Development Council.
This isn’t about creating another committee. It’s about creating one strong community organisation that can bring people together, attract investment, secure funding, develop local projects and make sure our towns have a voice in shaping their own future.
Facilitated through the EU Just Transition Programme, the aim is to build an organisation that belongs to the community and works for the community. Its job will be to help deliver projects that improve everyday life, whether that’s better tourism, supporting local businesses, improving recreation and amenities, protecting our environment, strengthening community facilities or creating new opportunities for future generations.
Over recent months, representatives from community groups, businesses and local volunteers have been meeting to design how this organisation should work. They have also looked at successful community development companies across Ireland to learn what works and what doesn’t.
The next step is simple – talk to the wider community.
Just Transition Activator Colm Croffy is inviting up to three officers from every club and organisation – especially those affiliated to the County Councils to attend one of a series of short briefing clinics.
These sessions are not about telling people what has already been decided. They are about explaining the proposal, answering questions, listening to concerns and making sure local people help shape the final organisation. Every question is welcome. Every concern matters.
Briefing Clinics
- St Faithleach’s – Tuesday 21 July (10.00 am – 8.00 pm)
- St Mary’s Parish Hall – Wednesday 22 July (10.00 am – 8.00 pm)
- Lanesborough Library – Tuesday 28 July (2 pm – 7.00 pm)
Appointments last approximately 25 minutes and are available by pre-booking with email to ccroffy@Longfordcoco.ie , with an additional drop-in hour at each venue. Members of the working group will attend alongside the Just Transition Activator.
Following the briefings, facilitated Community Organisation Re-imagining Workshops are planned for late September. Priority for workshop places will be given to those who attended a briefing session.
Anyone unable to attend a clinic can arrange an online Teams briefing with Colm Croffy by emailing cccroffy@longfordcoco.ie or texting 086 206 6597 before 7 August.
The future of Ballyleague and Lanesborough won’t be decided by someone else. It will be decided by the people who choose to get involved.
Fr. Pat launches his memoirs

Back in 2023 Fr. Pat Lennon celebrated his 50 years jubilee as a priest and in 2024 he retired to live in Clonfower. From time to time he continues to help out with parish duties when called upon to do so.
On Sunday next 19th July Fr. Pat will launch his new book, ‘Come Here a Second Till I Tell You: My Journey Through Priesthood’.
In this memoir, Fr. Pat reflects on his life and vocation, sharing stories from his years in the priesthood serving Athlone, Ballinahown, Ardagh, Carrick-on-Shannon, and Dromard/Drumlish parishes including his time serving on the missions in Chipata, Zambia.
Fr. Pat will celebrate the 9.30am Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Legga, on Sunday next 10th July and following Mass, he will officially launch his book at the Clubhouse of Dromard GAA in Pairc na nGael. Everyone is warmly welcome to attend.
The proceeds from book sales will go to St. Christopher’s Services and Meals on Wheels, making this a wonderful opportunity to support two very worthy causes while you are reading and celebrating Fr. Pat’s remarkable journey.
‘Come Here a Second Till I Tell You: My Journey Through Priesthood’ is on sale locally in O’Brien’s costing €20.
Fabulous Triathlon Weekend

Last weekend the Two Provinces Sprint Triathlon, National Triathlon Series and Kidathon saw over 900 contestants competing in this triathlon that has captured the imagination of triathletes from all over Ireland and further afield. When you look at the professionalism and volunteerism of the entire community you cannot but be astounded by how the Lanesboro Triathlon club, formed in 2010, has come from humble beginnings in to this unbelievable event that continues to grow and grow.
The first Two Provinces Triathlon took place on 9th July 2011. With 16 successful triathlons under their belt you can see how the competitors have grown accustomed to the excellent running of the race and you see the familiar faces returning years after year along with the growing numbers of elite athletes.
Last Friday night as is traditional seen things kicked off with 100 young athletes 8 to 15 year olds taking part on a very warm and sultry evening. It was energy sapping but the look on the faces of all these youngsters at the finishing line told of great enjoyment they got in competing.
From early on a bright and sunny Saturday morning those that were not staying in the area began flooding into town and the river bank was bustling with a great excitement for the competitor and the huge number of spectator that took every vantage point. As usual an air of great excitement was building as we approached starting time and with the sound of the hooter for wave 1 to begin it was hell for leather in the water before ascending their bicycles and the cycle to Scramogue and back to finish their race with the 5k run to Harold’s Cross and back to the finishing line at the small harbour.
As a community we could have wished for a better day to show off our twin towns Lanesboro and Ballyleague looked fabulous but it was not just for the weekend but that comment has been ringing in the ears of locals all year long – for that we must be very grateful to the Tidy Towns committees on both sides of the bridge.
We must once again thank Lanesboro Triathlon Club and this year’s Race Director Andree Gallagher and her incredible team for another great day in our community and highlighting what is fabulous here.
All-Ireland Finals

There is a great excitement building in our community on both sides of the bridge where the ladies footballers of St. Faithleach’s and Rathcline are really stealing the limelight.
Kingspan Breffni Park was a very happy hunting ground for the Roscommon Under 16 ladies on Thursday 25th June when they had a hard earned victory over a much fancied Armagh side. Local ladies Phoebe Ryan, parents Tom and Eleanor Ryan, Mountcashel and Sophie Cox parents Danny and Amanda Cox, Curraghroe along with their families and the entire area are looking forward to the AirNav All-Ireland U16 B Final where they will take on Laois on Wednesday 15th July in Kinnegad at 7.15pm.
Back to Cavan on Sunday last for the Intermediate semi-final where Roscommon took on neighbours Westmeath for a place in the TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate Championship Final and following a monumental game Roscommon again found Kingspan Park a very happy hunting ground where a late goal ensured victory on a 2-14 to 2-10 scoreline.
Ellen Irwin daughter of James and Dara, Cloonadra was once again to the fore with another sterling performance. Roscommon will now travel to Croke Park for the All-Ireland final to take on Fermanagh at 1.45pm. (A little birdie informed me that a major birthday celebration has had to be put on hold until after the final).
Pictured is Ellen Irwin with her father James, mother Dara and sister Orla.
On Wednesday last in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe Longford travelled to take on Limerick in the ZuCar All-Ireland C semi-final. The scoreline at the end told a different story to the preceding 60 minutes as right through the game there was nothing separating the sides and it was only in the final few minutes that Longford struck with a 3 goal rush.
For the Rathcline club it was a proud occasion for 5 local ladies Emma Feeney , parents, Kieran and Caoire, Emma Dowd, parents Stephen and Tina, Leah Kenny, parents Mark and Deirdre and Lauren Killian parents Thomas and Deirdre, and Tina Dowd who is part of the team management. The ZuCar All-Ireland Final will take place in St. Tiernach’s Park, Clones on Saturday 25th July at 2pm where Longford will take on Armagh.
Engagement
Many congratulations to Rachael Banahan, daughter of Noel and Miriam Banahan, Ballagh and Darren Nerney son of Gerry and Angela Banahan, Doughill who announce their engagement recently.
New Accommodation
Over the time we have noticed that the Lanesboro Ballyleague area has become more and more popular with many people wishing to spend some time here. We have noticed the great and growing influx of campervans on a weekly basis and a great growth in inquiries for accommodation in and around the area.
I was delighted to be informed during the week of further accommodation availability when the Canal View Lodges came on the market offering luxury accommodation with 6 x 3 bedroom houses sleeping up to 6 people at Foigha between Lanesboro and Ballymahon. With a spa coming on stream in the near future this new accommodation is a Godsend for those that are looking to stay locally.

President presents All-Ireland winners in Pearse Park

It is not every day, week or year that we can say that the honour of an All-Ireland Final is played in Pearse Park but it happened on Saturday last when the Glen Dimplex Junior All-Ireland Championship final took place.
Indeed, it has never happened before that a proud Rathcline man and proud Longford man had the honour of being the National Camogie President and presenting the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland Cup to the winning captain their trophy as what happened on Saturday last in Pearse Park when Brian Molloy presented the Monaghan joint captains their All-Ireland trophy.
It was a magnificent occasion for Brian to have the privilege the Cup in Longford.
At his inauguration Brian set out in his aims for his term in office his wish to see Camogie getting stronger and developing in counties that are not competing in the Camogie championships and this year was the first year that Monaghan had fielded an adult team in competitions in 15 years. We hope that the tender steps that are currently being undertaken within Longford at the moment will lead to us seeing an underage team represent the county in the near future.
Championship begins
Friday night next 17th July in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park is when Rathcline will begin their championship campaign where they will take on Abbeylara at 8pm.
The last meeting just a few weeks ago in the league saw Abbeylara emerge victorious but just by a very narrow margin. With so little between the teams we hope that the supporters of the club will be their 16th man and be very vocal in cheering them to victory.
St. Faithleach’s will have to wait for almost another three weeks when they will open their championship campaign with a home game in Ballyleague against Castlerea St. Kevin’s.on Bank Holiday Sunday 2nd August

Lanesboro Community Games Update
It has been another great season for Lanesboro Community Games, with children from the area taking part across a wide range of events and representing the community with great enthusiasm.
In Chess, Lanesboro was represented by an U13 and an U11 Team, with our U11 team reaching a final after some excellent performances.
In swimming our Lanesboro competitors took part in the U10 and U12 freestyle events, while another group of children put their knowledge and teamwork to the test in the Community Games Table Quiz.
The Arts and Handwriting competitions took place in St. Mary’s Hall in April, with a fantastic turnout from Lanesboro. Our young artists and writers went on to represent the area at the county competition in June.
The local Track and Field Day in Lanesboro was another success and a great day out for all involved. Fifteen athletes qualified for the County Finals and we are delighted that three Lanesboro athletes have now secured their place at the Community Games All-Ireland Finals at the end of the month, they are Niall Morgan, Patrick Casey and Andrew Nolan, and we wish them every success.
A huge thank you to all of the children, parents, volunteers and coaches who continue to support Lanesboro Community Games.
Your cooperation makes these opportunities possible and we are very proud of all our participants for their commitment, sportsmanship and achievements throughout the season.

Uniting Ireland new book
Daniel McGann, Killashee has become a prolific writer and his latest publication ‘Uniting Ireland’ has just reached the shop shelves this weekend. I am sure that the book will be another bestseller.
The topic of an All-Ireland poll to vote on a United Ireland seems imminent and is very topical with all political parties offering their opinions on how and when the vote takes place. In this book Daniel expresses his vision for the upcoming vote with his own unique style of writing and it contains very thought provoking views.
The book is really worthy of a read and it can be bought in O’Brien’s for €10.

Echoes of BnM and ESB: The Grand Lanesboro & Ballyleague Reunion
We are endeavouring to make a magical trip down memory lane for all the families that came to Lanesboro and Ballyleague communities when they came to work with Bord na Mona and ESB since the mid 1950’s. We are remembering their parents and all the families that grew up going to school in the all the schools around the three housing estates of The Green, Cloontuskert and Derryhaun. We are also remembering all the families that came to work from all the surrounding parishes. There were also a number of years of apprentices that came to Lanesboro Vocational School now Lanesboro Community College and the committee would love to welcome them back too.
To help with the reconnection of everyone we would like that everyone that reads these notes and that have connections to anyone that comes from the above mentioned families that they would pass the word around of a giant gathering in Lanesboro on Saturday 26th September where we will all reconnect with Bord na Mona and ESB.
It is fitting and a right time to do this as the power station has been closed for seven years now and the Bord na Mona works is rapidly come to its life end and we should all celebrate what both companies and the people that it brought to work here and bring families and former workers back to the community that they made so great.
The organising group is asking you to share the news with old school friends, send vintage photos with names to lanesbororeconnection@gmail.com or drop physical copies into O’Brien’s. It would be made all the better if you could include names of the people in the photographs. Please put your name on anything you leave into O’Brien’s as we want to credit your input and be able to return them to you.
If you wish to scan them yourself you can send then to lanesbororeconnection@gmail.com The committee would love to receive all your memories.
The Joker survives again
The Joker is on the rise once again and on Saturday night last the Joker was not cut from the deck of cards and another €100 will be added to the jackpot for next week. The Joker now stands at €3,100 from the remaining 41 cards on Saturday night next 18th July in the St. Faithleach’s clubhouse.
The €100 draw took place and the two winners of last Saturday’s draw winners, 11th July, were Walter J. Burke and Padraig Hoare
Be in with your chance to have a cut for the Joker by buying tickets online on the ClubSpot portal St. Faithleach’s, from any of the organising committee or in the clubhouse on Saturday night.
Killashee & Clondra Parish History
The process of collating the historical records of Killashee and Clondra Parish has just begun and the first publication sees a very detailed account of the history of faith in the parish subtitled ‘A History of Faith ‘is now available.
The faith history and records of the parish is phenomenally detailed so much so that the list of the clergy that served both the Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic Church were comprehensively recorded to the extent that there is a record going back to 1411.
The communities of St. Paul’s Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic churches of St. Patrick’s (Killashee) and St. Brendan’s (Clondra) has and continues to play a major role in the parish for such a long time.
This book is launched to coincide with a momentous occasion that is presently happening in the parish where Fr. Shea Casey and Fr. Jimmie McDonnell are both celebrating the Golden Jubilee of their ordination into the priesthood.
This Killashee& Clondra Parish – A History of Faith is available in O’Brien’s costing just €25.
