Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Break In

Last Wednesday a break in took place at the home of Anthony and Mary Lannon in Ballagh. There was nobody at home during the break in which took place during daylight hours. A lot of valuable items were stolen during the robbery If you were travelling in the vicinity of the Lannon household, Ballagh church and Ballagh National school on Wednesday last  and noticed anything all you are asked to contact Roscommon Gardaí  09066 38311

As we are in the run up to Christ it is very important that you be very vigilant about your own property and also your neighbour’s property. If you sense that there is anything out of place or suspicious you are encouraged to contact your local Garda station and the text alert system for your area will kick in. If you have not already joined the text alert system in your area there is not a better time than now to sign up and ensure that you are contacted by any of the alerts that go as the case arises.

Social Services Whist Drive

Next Friday is Friday 1st November and as usual the first Friday means the Lanesboro Social Services Whist Drive. Next Friday night along with all the regular Whist players there is a call for new players to come along. With the clock having gone back one hour last weekend there is a greater need for the services offered by the committee. We approach Christmas and a goal of the committee is to ensure that all the needy are in a position to enjoy the Christmas season worry free. The Whist Drive every first Friday helps in a major way to help alleviate the fears of those most in need. Your support and the support of your card playing friends is a major help to the committee and they look forward to welcoming you on Friday night to St. Mary’s parish Hall for the game commencing at 8.30pm.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Saturday night live – Our club brought younger members of the club to Croke Park on Saturday night last for the second and final game of the two game series between Ireland and Australia. There definitely is no place like Croke Park for an evening game and our young players were totally in awe of the whole occasion. Despite the game being one-sided it did not take from the brilliant occasion for these young people and they are now left with a huge memory of a very special night with their club mates in Croke Park.  It was an absolutely smashing night all-round. The club would like to thank those parents and club members who travelled and helped to make the night so very special.

Schools Coach – The club is very pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Hanley as schools coach for both Lanesboro Primary school and Fermoyle Primary school. We wish Kevin well on his appointment.

Now that the season is at its end the club would like to thank everyone that helped in any way towards the successful running of the club throughout the years. It was a year that has a tremendous buzz and it was great to be involved.

However, and there is always a however, it was notable at club events be they matches, training and social events such as concerts; it was notable that there were a great number of parents not supporting the club. There were always the regular people there but there was also a large absence. This was disappointing as practically all teams were very competitive and the young players were enjoying themselves. Hopefully in the year ahead there will be a huge number of parents turning out to support their kids within the club. Come along, enjoy and be part of your club.

The club would like to encourage all their supporters to support the new Rathcline Club Lotto that is commencing in the very near future.

Fitness Challenge 2013: St. Faithleachs Fitness Challenge Update – Week 3. The on-going commitment from all involved is to be admired with class numbers still very high so well done! Tuesday night’s circuit was slightly different as we stepped up the intensity and introduced some old favourites. Another great attendance added to the buzz and everyone got stuck in from the start pushing themselves hard. It was a tough class but everyone stuck with it and made it through. Those aching legs and backsides will all be worth it we promise! Friday nights “Mystery Class” was by local Ironman, Neil O’Donoghue from Lanesboro Triathlon Club. Neil gave a tough core strength and conditioning class which really tested the group but once again everyone rose to the challenge and gave it their all. Neil will have to watch out for some of this group on the Ironman circuit next year as they are a very determined crew! Sunday morning’s session up Sliabh Bán was unfortunately cancelled due to the severe weather conditions. As soon as the text was sent out the weather cleared up! We were sorry to have had to cancel as we were looking forward to it all week. This week see’s us reaching half-way in the challenge. It is important to keep the momentum going and the large numbers at the classes help to do that. See you all Tuesday night!

Lough Ree AC

Who is Jack Madigan? Jack turned up at our last run if the Clonbonny training series which finished last Tuesday evening. He is a young man from Sheffield, England, he was reluctant to take part, but when he did, he broke the 10 minutes for the 1¼mile run – of the 57 participants over the 6 outings only 12 managed to beat that time. The youngster disappeared as quickly as he arrived!

Cian Glennon is another who paid us a visit for the first time and brought in a time of 8min 12 seconds – the fastest time over the period of six weeks. We cannot truly evaluate that performance as we don’t know his age group. Suffice to say that he still attends Primary School, while several others are in secondary school.

In paying compliments let us not forget another Cian that is Cian Walton. This youngster is a 3rd/4th class pupil in Cloontuskert NS attended all six runs and brought in best times in most of them, while our leading lady must be Alannah Flood improving on every outing. There were other outstanding achievements but that is for another day.  The next fixture is the Connaught championship cross country  on Sunday 3rd November at Padraig Pearses GAA club grounds on the outskirts of Ballinasloe – out the old Athlone road from Ballinasloe and up roadway to left.

The results of last Tuesday’s run can be seen in O’Brien’s window.
