Official Opening by An Taoiseach
After what seems like a very short 7 years the hard work of a dedicated number of people sees the Official Opening of the new National Accessibility Centre for Water Sports and Recreation in Ballyleague. We more commonly know the Centre as the award winning Access for All Centre on the banks of the Shannon in Ballyleague that has been cause waves since the launch of their boat a few years back.
This auspicious occasion will see An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar attending and officially performing the official opening the National Accessibility Centre for Water Sports and Recreation on Friday next 24th February at 11.30am.
Sincere congratulations to everyone that made the dream become a reality and may the National Accessibility Centre for Water Sports and Recreation continue to flourish.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Word is that there is a great deal of endeavour taking place in many places planning their floats for the return of St. Patrick’s Day Parade to Lanesboro and Ballyleague. Great credit is really due to everyone for their efforts and the committee for their work in preparing for the Parade.
As usual the floats will gather at the St. Faithleach’s GAA Club House for a departure time of 2.30pm and will travel through the town to Lanesboro Community College.
The overall winning float will receive €250 and a trophy. Other categories that will be judged – Best Club, Best Junior, Best Vintage, Best Business, Best Dressed Window, and Most Original with the winners receiving €50 and a trophy.

St. Patrick’s Day Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church at 11am and it will include traditional musicians, parish choir and champion dancer.
Break-Ins
On Thursday evening last once again the scourge of break-ins and robberies raised its head on both sides of our community. A house was broken into in the Killinure area followed by a break-in in the Moneen area. A number of items were taken in the first house while the resident of the house of the second house disturbed the robber inside the house.
After a relatively quiet time over the past few years it is sad to say that we have, once again, to be very observant and keep an eye out for anything we see as suspicious. If you can, please, take the number and make of the suspicious vehicle.
Presently, the text alert has ceased and the names from the old system are being transferred to a new county wide app. This should prove to be a more inclusive and efficient way of notification and reach a greater number a lot faster.
Presently we seem to be devoid of Gardaí on the ground in our community hence making it much easier for intruders to infiltrate our homes. We ask the powers that be to renew Lanesboro Garda Station to the numbers it is supposed to have and not keep drawing our locally stationed Gardaí to Longford. We are entitled to the same protection in our community.
Line Dancing
Line Dancing classes will take place every Friday morning 11am at the Quad Centre Roscommon Town.
Line Dancing classes, again, every Sunday at the Quad Centre Roscommon Town
Beginners are on from 6pm to 7pm. Followed by Improvers from 7pm to 8pm
Line Dancing will take place at the Kilbride Centre every Tuesday evening at 7pm followed by Social Dancing with Christopher Byrne
Your support for the Parade
In an effort to defray costs for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade the committee is holding a raffle and the support of our entire community is encouraged. This year the draw will take place in Adie’s bar on St. Patrick’s night. Tickets are priced at €2 each or 3 for €5. There will be five prizes of €100 and you may be one of the lucky five.
Tickets can be bought in the local bars, supermarkets, O’Brien’s and from committee members.
Lanesboro I.C.A.
Joe Flaherty, TD very kindly treated 16 local ICA members to a day in the Dáil. It was lovely event and was much enjoyed by all. Staff and politicians were most welcoming and gave a very informative tour of the Dáil. The visitors were treated to a lovely lunch and had ample time to view the live Dáil debates. Members wish to say thanks to Joe for a very interesting and entertaining day.
There are always several activities taking place with something for everyone. New members are always welcome. Just call into any of meetings to get a taster.
Meetings are usually held on the second Wednesday monthly at 8pm in St Mary`s Hall Lanesboro. The March meeting is an exception and will be held on Wednesday 1st March to facilitate members attending National Women`s Day on the 8th March at Headquarters, Connolly Barracks, Longford’
A weekend trip to An Grianán is arranged for 10th to 12th March and early booking is essential.

Festival of Lights next weekend
Next weekend 24th to 26th February will see the very unique Festival of Lights taking place at the former Connolly Barracks in Longford Town.
The Longford Lights Festival is free, fully accessible outdoor public event and invites you, your family, friends to come along on at least one of the evenings between 5.30 and 8.30pm.
As stated in the Longford Leader “Tom Meskell, the Artistic Director brought together a team of artists from all over Ireland and England including the Liverpool Lantern Co, Macnas of Galway and Black Powder Monkeys to work with ten community and school groups in the Longford town area.”

The Gathering Weekend
“The Lough Ree Environmental Summer School and Boat “Gathering”.
This unique event will make a comeback, after a brief pause, in Ballyleague / Lanesborough from 28th April to 1st May 2023. The Summer School down through the years had grown in significance with its remit being to increase awareness among locals and visitors alike with regard to our local environment through field trips / workshops and seminars. The Environmental Summer School was one of the most important festivals of its kind on the island of Ireland, and each year a theme was explored and this year the theme is ‘Nature’. The school is open to everyone, even those with just a passing interest in the environment. It is anticipated that it will attract visitors from all over Ireland as well as an increasing international audience. Previously, the Summer School developed a core of repeat visitors who returned each summer to sample new additions to its programme as well as partake in the old favourites.
LAND BASED EVENTS
On Saturday 29th of April, Eanna Ní Lamhna, Ecologist and Environmentalist will be giving “Talks and Walks” this will entail the exploration of the local woodlands with their vast array of wild flora and fauna.
Dr. Harman Murtagh will be giving a presentation in the Access for All Centre on Quaker Island with reference to the replica Burial Stones that are on display in the centre, this will be followed by Boat Trips up to Quaker Island on the purpose built Access for All Disability Boat.
Dr. Tina Aughney, who has a keen interest in all wildlife matters and has been very fortunate to work in the area of bat recording since the mid-1990s,. She has greatly contributed to the knowledge and conservation needs of Irish bat species. For the last 11 years she has been surveying for bats across the island and has gathered extensive records on this mammal group, all of which have been entered onto the BCIreland database, which she manages for Bat Conservation Ireland will also be giving lectures and “Bat Walks”.
Nuala Madigan, Chief Executive Officer Irish Peatland Conservation Council – (PEATLANDS) will be guiding walks through some of our local peatlands as well giving a lecture prior to her walks. The way into the bog is along a tree-lined track that is home to a range of wild flora and butterflies, while the bog itself offers a rich environment for sphagnum mosses, lichens, insect-eating plants and rare flowering plants.
Billy Flynn. MCIEEM MIBiolI MIEnvSc CEnv Ecologist -Chartered Environmental Scientist (ECOLOGY & WATER QUALITY) will be giving lectures on Water Quality within our catchment area followed by Field Trips and Workshops.
Sue Moles – Wildlife Ranger. National Parks and Wildlife Service, and Niall Fallon (Ecologist) will take the lead on a “Nature Walk & Talk” on Commons North and Curreen Point.
A Maypole will be unveiled at the Marina in Ballyleague to commemorate the old “Maypole” tradition with music and festivities on the Sunday night.
WATER RELATED EVENTS
A big number of visiting boats have been invited to Ballyleague Marina for the weekend through 2 specific Irish Waterways Facebook Pages, who have a total of over 15,000 members – Shannon Boat Owners Group and Irelands Inland Waterways Comments and Advice Pages. These 2 groups have come together to showcase Ballyleague as a destination with courses in Power Boat Level 1 accreditation from the Irish Sailing Association. Lectures and demonstrations on First Aid, Defib, Boat Safety, Fire Safety and Boat Mechanics will also be offered over the weekend. RNLI from Athlone, Lough Ree Sub Aqua and Roscommon Civil Defence Water Units will also be giving demonstrations and advice on Safety to water users over the weekend.
Les Saunders, a member of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI) CSIG Group which is a cooperative of members from all branches of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI). Members of the Charts Special Interest Group (CSIG) are working together to deliver a new set of charts for the rivers, lakes and canals of Ireland with the aim of making the waterways safer and more enjoyable for everyone. Achieving this goal involves carrying out depth surveys, analysing data, adding location knowledge and then producing electronic charts from the resulting information. Les will be giving a presentation and demonstration of the Electronic Navigation Charts for all boaters in the Access for All Building.
Denis Baker, from the Royal Canal Branch of IWAI will be demonstrating “NavWatch”. The NavWatch group has developed a Survey Tool for boaters and other users of the system, to log infrastructure and navigation issues that impede the use of the navigation. It is anticipated the data collected will be of significant use for planning the maintenance required to keep the navigation usable. Regular updates on issues logged are published, so all interested parties can assess needs and resources required.
Boat Trips north on the River Shannon, passing under the Bord na Mona bridge on which peat is still transported to the Bord na Mona works. The boat will travel on to Tarmonbarry, through the locks and then return. Along the way, you will learn about the bird life and angling on this part of the river.
Neath an Irish Sky
There are just two copies of the Henry Owens written book on Roscommon Republican Dead ‘Neath an Irish Sky’ left such was the sale on this wonderful book The book documents the lives of those that died in the troubles between the years 1917 and 1923 in County Roscommon. Don’t miss the opportunity to have this book in your library of excellent local books.
The last two copies are on sale in O’Brien’s costing just €16.
€12,100 to be won
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery on Tuesday 21st February stood at €12,100. This is a wonderful amount of money to be won with tickets just costing €2 or 3 tickets for €5.
The numbers drawn on Tuesday 14th February for a jackpot of €12,000 were 3, 4, 8 and 23 but there was no winner of the jackpot. The winner of the €50 prize was Des McDermott, and the three €20 winners were Willie Dennigan, c/o Mags, Mike Greene c/o FÁS and Kathleen Donlon c/o Mags.

Weekly Card Game
The results from last Sunday night’s weekly card game held in Lanesboro Parish Hall game held on Sunday night last 12th February are: 1st 1st Barney & Eugene. Three way tie for 2nd with Pat & Frank, Tom & Tommy and Anne & Kay. Last game winners were Basil & Tom. Raffle winners were Noel McDermott, Tom Mulvihill, Jim Horan & Anne O Connor. The game continues every Sunday night at 8.30 pm with light refreshments served.
Pollinator Plan
The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan’s newsletter for February is now available on www.pollinators.ie. It is a wonderful and informative read packed full of information on early food sources for pollinator, bulbs for pollinators and very interesting thoughts on the planting of wildflower seeds. It is well worth reading as we are entering the planting, growing and end of hibernation
Living Well Programme Dates Announced
HSE, Living Well is a free online group programme delivered over six workshops (2.5 hrs x 6). It is delivered by trained leaders, most of whom are also living with a long-term health condition. You will develop self-management skills and confidence to live well with your health conditions.

It was a very busy weekend with 10 teams in action.
Pride of place this week has to go to the under 16s whose Connacht adventure continues as they just got the better of Galway side Renmore. The Ballyboro boys displayed great spirit and resilience in a game that was always tightly contested. Cody Phelan put Ballyboro ahead in the first half but a late Renmore goal meant the game went into extra time. Ben Murphy became the Ballyboro hero as he notched the winning goal in the second period of extra time. SMART recovery is an evidence based addiction recovery support group where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour.

Roscommon Community Challenge
There are just 2 weeks to go to the 2023 Roscommon Community Challenge; this very
popular and well supported Moonlight walk/run around Roscommon Town takes place on
Friday March 3rd at 8pm. This year, Roscommon Special Olympics and Roscommon Sports
Park are the chosen Charities. This community event is for everyone walkers, runners,
joggers, individuals, teams, and families, those looking to set a time for 2023 and those that
would like to improve on previous timings. As in previous years this challenge has proven
extremely popular with a great response from people who signed up to be part of the training
programme. There has been huge progression since training started in early January and
participants are really looking forward to getting to the starting line. This year, we are
looking forward to revealing our new 10k route which will be revealed in the next few weeks.
Roscommon Special Olympics are a remarkable bunch of athletes, and the club are delighted
to be the beneficiaries of this year’s Community Challenge. There is a thriving club within
the town with bowlers and swimmers meeting every week and the Club are looking forward
to resuming on the Astro pitch at Roscommon Community Sports Park shortly. Roscommon
Special Olympics are incredibly grateful to the Community Sports Park, for the use of their
facilities throughout the year. This event is especially important to the Club and proceeds will
enable the continued provision of sports to a most wonderful bunch of fantastic athletes. The
second charity is Roscommon Community Sports Park (RCSP), This is a wonderful facility
and a great example of true community spirit. The building is a busy spot and is used by a
variety of community groups.
Without doubt, none of this would be possible without the encouragement and
professionalism received from Roscommon Sports Partnership and organisers are extremely
grateful to Co-ordinator Noel Feeley and his staff David Brady, Michael O’ Donnell, and
Martin Hannon for all their support. Extending a word of thanks to all who help with the
running of the event on the night, organisers are currently recruiting volunteers to help
Marshall the route and as usual businesses are offered an opportunity to promote their

Lenten Scripture Courses: A Lenten Scripture Course will begin on Tuesday 28th February in the Parish Hub. The starting time will be confirmed later in the week.
Mass Intentions: As there is an increase in the demand for Mass Intentions, it is proposed to share two intentions at the 11am Mass on Sundays, from the start of Lent.
