Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Sleep Out for Simon

This year sees the return, once again, of the very popular ‘Sleep Out’ as a Midland Simon Community fundraiser. The Sleep Out is held in conjunction with Longford Rugby Club and once again they are appealing to your generosity to equal if not better last year’s fundraiser.

Like last year local Ballyleague man Junior Hannon will once again be our local representative. Junior gives so much of himself to many local support groups each year and now is our time to reciprocate with our support for this very deserving cause. A sponsorship card is in O’Brien’s and your generous support would be much appreciated.

Death

The sudden death took place on Friday last 17th February at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe of Patsy Donlon, Moher. Formerly Patsy Eivers from Knock she was predeceased a number of years ago by her husband Pete, her son Thomas and grandson Daniel was just two weeks short of her 77th birthday. Patsy, a great conversationalist liked nothing better than coming to town where she loved to meet friends and locals to chat on current events and recall the great old days growing up in town.  She was a woman who was very glamorous, loved style and she was always dressed in the latest fashion along with a different handbag every time. Patsy was very family orientated who loved children and especially her grandchildren who were her pride and joy – she loved the excitement they brought to her life. She was woman who took great pride in the presentation of her home and who loved nothing more than tending to her garden. She also was a lady of very generous and charitable nature. Patsy had a very deep faith and she visited both Ballyleague and Lanesboro churches on a very regular basis. She had a great love of Irish country music and liked nothing better than a night out dancing.

Her remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home on Monday followed by removal from her residence on Tuesday to the Church of the Holy Rosary; Ballyleague for her Funeral Mass. Burial took place afterwards to Cloontuskert Cemetery. We extend our deepest sympathy to her children Christine, Niall, Edward and Patricia, her partner Gerry, her grandchildren Katie, Jordan, James, Channon, Rachel, Grace, Sam and Lexi, brothers T.J. and Kevin, relatives and many friends.

Your support for the Parade

In an effort to defray costs for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade the committee is holding a raffle and the support of our entire community is encouraged. This year the draw will take place in Adie’s bar on St. Patrick’s night. Tickets are priced at €2 each or 3 for €5. There will be five prizes of €100 and you may be one of the lucky five.

Tickets can be bought in the local bars, supermarkets, O’Brien’s and from committee members.

Day with the Stars

Yes, the wonderful and hugely enjoying Day with the Stars once again returns to Roscommon Racecourse this year. The show will take place on Sunday 18th June and there is no doubt but this year will equal if not better any day gone before it.

Tickets cost just €30 to be entertained by a multitude of Ireland’s finest musicians and can be bought in O’Brien’s.

Local notes inclusion

Anybody that wants items included in the local notes is advised that they have their note with me on a Sunday night at the very latest. This is to ensure inclusion in the coming weeks notes.

Lough Ree AC Success

Last Saturday the wonderful Indoor Athletics Arena in Athlone hosted the U12 & U13 Connacht Championships. Club athletes took part in a number of events which included 60m, 600m, Hurdles, Shot Putt, High/Long Jump and Relay. They competed against athletes from all over Connacht with well over a 100 in some events.

Highlights includes the Boys U12 Relay where Tadhg Shea an under 11 athlete bravely took the first leg had a great run, holding off the competition it allowing him to hand over the baton first, strong runs by Hession, Nolan and Morgan allowed them to finish 3rd in their heat. Unfortunately the girls were unable to field a relay team but all performed well in their individual events.

The Club’s highlight was undoubtedly Andrew Nolan’s performance in the U12 Shot Putt, where he finished 1st with a throw over 10m, he will now represent Lough Ree at All Ireland level. He has only recently taken up this event and it proves what commitment to practice and training can achieve.

Congrats Andrew.

Invitation to Fáilte meeting

As many know, over 70 people from Ukraine have come to live in our community in the aftermath of the Russian conflict. Many are playing a part in our local community – attending local schools and taking part in sport locally and some residents at the former Costello’s Care home facility have already taken part in water sports activity on a weekly basis at the Lough Ree Access for All Centre in the north quay in Ballyleague.

Residents of the area are now invited to join in a weekly english language get together with the new communities living here – starting at 7pm on Wednesday March 7th at the new Access for all centre on the North Quay in Ballyleague.

Fáilte Isteach is a community project involving predominantly local residents and local

volunteers welcoming migrants through conversational English classes but to the 120 communities it impacts across Ireland, Fáilte Isteach classes are so much more.

Fáilte Isteach classes are so much more.

The groups provide a space for those who are isolated to connect; for perspectives to evolve; for attitudes to change. The informal, relaxed approach to learning allows the most marginalised in our society to engage with others and truly integrate into life in Ireland.

The weekly classes help improve language and reduce loneliness for over 4500 migrants, allowing for long-lasting, authentic community integration. The classes salute the often overlooked potential of 1500 older volunteers who make Fáilte Isteach a reality.

Fáilte Isteach embraces a relaxed, unstructured learning environment. The classes are tutored entirely by volunteers who are encouraged to welcome participants to their community through language; identify needs through conversation and focus primarily on fluency and building confidence. Flexible classes allow volunteers to support participants in their immediate language requirements while offering a warm welcome.

Fáilte Isteach was established in October 2006 by Third Age in response to the observed daily difficulties that new migrants were experiencing integrating into the local community through a poor understanding or lack of English. Following its success as a pilot project in a small rural community, Fáilte Isteach was launched nationally in late 2008. From the inaugural class in Summerhill involving 12 volunteer tutors and 7 students, Fáilte Isteach has now grown to 170 classes across 26 counties, with over 1500 volunteer tutors who support the integration of 4500 migrant students by delivering over 96,000 hours of free tuition annually.

The first night of Fáilte Isteach in this area will be facilitated by Roscommon Leader Partnership at the new Access for all centre in the north quay in Ballyleague on Wednesday March 7th at 7pm and everyone is welcome – especially the Ukrainian community.

The Gathering Weekend

“The Lough Ree Environmental Summer School and Boat “Gathering”.

This unique event will make a comeback, after a brief pause, in Ballyleague / Lanesborough from 28th April to 1st May 2023. The Summer School down through the years had grown in significance with its remit being to increase awareness among locals and visitors alike with regard to our local environment through field trips / workshops and seminars. The Environmental Summer School was one of the most important festivals of its kind on the island of Ireland, and each year a theme was explored and this year the theme is ‘Nature’. The school is open to everyone, even those with just a passing interest in the environment. It is anticipated that it will attract visitors from all over Ireland as well as an increasing international audience. Previously, the Summer School developed a core of repeat visitors who returned each summer to sample new additions to its programme as well as partake in the old favourites.

Of course, it is the chat in the Sportspark afterwards that is most important, so we look forward in anticipation to a great night on 3rd March. As in previous years this challenge has proven extremely popular with a great response from people who signed up to be part of the training programme. There has been huge progression since January 3rd and participants are really looking forward to getting to the starting line. Without doubt, none of this would be possible without the encouragement and professionalism received from Roscommon Sports Partnership and we are extremely grateful to Coordinator Noel Feeley and his staff David Brady, Michael O Donnell with a special word of thanks to Martin Hannon for all their support.
