New Business – Athena
We would like to wish Anna Peters, daughter of Steve and Marie Peters, Lehery, the very best of luck with her new business in Longford Town. Anna who studies at the National Colle of Art and Design and spent the past five years working in Art Galleries in Dublin decided to open her new Fine Art Gallery and Café in Longford Town. Athena is on Ballymahon Street right across from the Market Square is a very central location.
Along with her own excellent work Anna has linked up with local artists Mia, Gray, Kevin Casey and her friend and fellow local artist Grace Brennan whose beautiful works are also on display in Anthena.
The gallery will also be Anna’s Art School for budding artists of all ages from 7 years up and she will hold classes for all levels and for different types of art, drawing, painting and pottery.
The gallery is well worth a visit and their no doubt that you will be very impressed by what Anna has put together in Longford Town.
We wish her the very best of luck and our hope is that she will go from strength to strength with this wonderful business.
Death
The entire area was saddened when the new broke of the death at the Sonas Nursing Home (Innis Ree Lodge), Ballyleague on Sunday 26th November of Brian Gray, formerly of the Green. He was predeceased by his wife Mai, sons Emmet and baby Paul, granddaughter Aisling and his sister Jacqueline. Born in Liverpool it was there he met his wife Mai who was nursing there and nursed him when he was stricken by a virus that limited his movement. Brian and Mai came to Lanesboro when he got a job with Bord na Mona where his ability, technical and mechanical knowledge of machines and his ability to fix any problem was legendary. Brian had a wonderful vision and brain in the creation of inventions where he was very adaptive and creative. Apart from the Bord, Brian shared his knowledge with everyone and anyone and was always willing to oblige in solving even the most difficult problem. He was a very personable man, full of positivity and very strong in character. He accepted his ill health as a challenge that he met head on and he embraced it with a great eagerness to overcome any limitations it brought to him.
Brian was a wonderful family man whose family was always very close to his heart. He was a fabulous neighbour and was always available to lend a hand to anyone that needed assistance. He enjoyed his pastimes of beekeeping and fishing as well as supporting Everton, the club from his native city.
Brian reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday last and on Wednesday his remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church for his Funeral Mass followed by cremation at Lakeland’s Crematorium, Cavan. To his daughters Anne, Sharon, Jennifer and Amanda, his sisters Irene and Beryl, relatives and many many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Zebra Crossing
Last week staff of Electric Ireland arrived in Lanesboro and began the initial work with the installation of lights and poles in preparation for the introduction of a Zebra Crossing at the corner from O’Brien’s shop to The Yacht Bar.
Hopefully, this will ensure the safety for the young and old people crossing the road at this point. As there is no ‘lollipop person’ in place to cross young people for school it is vital that this crossing will alleviate the problem of people having to run the gauntlet trying to cross the road.
While this crossing is very welcome, to ensure everyone’s safety there is a great need to ensure that the traffic slows down through the town as there are times that the speed, particularly down the hill, is unbelievable.
Community College Concert
The annual Lanesboro Community College Christmas concert created and organised put on by the Transition Year students will take place this Thursday evening in Lanesboro Parish Hall at 7pm.
Rehearsing has been ongoing for the past number of weeks and if previous year’s is anything to go by Thursday evening, then the attendance is really in for a treat.
Community Games
The Community Games in Lanesboro and Ballyleague Kilgefin has a long and successful history with many All-Ireland champions along with medallists galore in the All-Ireland’s, County and parish competitions.
Community Games give any young person boy or girl the opportunity to display their skills and abilities in a huge array of almost 60 different disciplines. Community Games is primarily a parent driven local organisation with parents anxious to ensure that the Community Games is good for their youngsters and their equally talented friends.
This is the time of the year that the AGM’s for both local Community Games groups takes place, and it is hugely important that all parents support their kids by getting involved in the formation of the committee for the coming year. It is very important to attend the AGM’s if only to show your support to the incoming committee. If you have recently arrived in our community the Community Games gives you that wonderful opportunity to meet and get to know locals through the involvement of their youngsters.
Please keep an eye on the Lanesboro notes, either in the Longford Leader or online, so that you can attend the AGM meeting and involve yourself or turn up just to give your support and backing for the elected committee.
Masses for Christmas Day
Masses for Christmas Day in St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro are Sunday, Christmas Eve, 6pm and 10pm and on Christmas morning 11.15am. The choir will be performing from 11am prior to Mass.
Christmas Day Run
The Annual Newtowncashel to Lanesboro Run will take place again this year starting at the Hill in Newtowncashel and finishing at the bridge in Lanesboro. The run/walk of approximately 11km is going for over 30 years now and it caters for all levels of fitness, and it will be magnificent to once again huge numbers turning out for this great run. The beneficiary of the Run is Longford MS and this is a fundraiser that the Longford Branch depends greatly upon for its yearly work and support.
Walkers will start from the Hill in Newtowncashel at 11.45am and runners start at 12.15pm. Sponsorship cards will soon be available from the Local, Newtowncashel, Brigid Mullooly, Lanesboro or O’Brien’s Corner Shop, Lanesboro.
Christmas Day Swim
What is a long and great tradition on Christmas morning is the annual Christmas Day Swim. Hardy souls from all over the area come along and take part. This is a wonderful sight with so many taking the dip and the bridge well lined with supporting crowds.
The swim will take place following 11.15am Mass in Lanesboro and we urge big numbers to come along, lend their support and meet and greet all that came home for Christmas. Following the swim there will be hot showers and refreshments available in the clubhouse.

Local Books back in Stock
Books by local authors will make great Christmas presents and you will also be showing your support for the great efforts made by our local authors.
New to our list is the recent arrival of Rose Moran’s book of poetry ‘In the Slant of a New Light’. You will all remember Rose as Sr. Rose who was part of the Mery nuns when they were in Lanesboro. Jack Harte’s Uneasy bedfellows and his local bestseller In the Wake of the Bagger amongst others are available. Ciaran Mullooly’s recent launch of his third book ‘The Future is Now’ is selling very fast and new stock has just arrived while a restock of Margaret Nohilly’s book of poetry ‘The Overlap of Times’ has it back on the bookshelves.
New stock arrived this week of the hugely popular Sliabh Bán written by Henry Owens, Longford Republican History and the Burkes and the Pollocks.
Christmas Lights
Lanesboro
The Christmas Lights Committee will be turning on the town lights on Saturday 9th December following the evening 6.30pm Mass. The committee is having their church gate collection at Christmas Eve and Christmas Day masses.
The Christmas lights Committee have cancelled their arranged carol singing after Mass to avoid clashing with the GAA’s annual club mass and refreshments.
Ballyleague
Ballyleague Christmas Lights will have their official turn on Saturday next, the 9th September after 7pm (approx. 7.30) mass in Ballyleague. This year we have asked the spouses of two deceased members of the lights committee to perform the honours. To add to our current initiative the committee will have additional new light features between the Bridge and Inver Filling Station in the coming weeks.
In order to support our work, the committee have launched a gofundme page and will also have a church gate collection at 7pm Mass and 11am masses on Saturday and Sunday next the 8th and 9th December, and they would appreciate your support
St. Vincent de Paul
The Annual St Vincent de Paul Appeal takes place over the next few weeks. Envelopes for your donations are now available in the church porch. You can leave your sealed envelope in with the Sunday offerings or drop it into the Presbytery. You can also use a plain envelope but mark it SVP. All donations received locally will be distributed locally. St Vincent de Paul offers direct support to families and individuals on a weekly basis and the assistance is non-judgemental and based on the need. Support can be either, food, fuel, clothing or education. Thank you for your generosity. SVP envelopes are also available in O’Brien’s Corner newsagents.
Genealogy Centre
The recent Open Day at the Killian Homeplace Family & Genealogy Centre in Fermoyle has created a wonderful reaction from so many people seeking to trace their family roots.
The research team are without doubt excellent in researching where even the flimsiest family comment will lead the team to astonishing family tree connections.
There is no doubt, if you are interested searching your family tree then the Killian Homeplace should be your first point of contact.

Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club
The club recently held their AGM and the following is the newly elected committee, Chairperson – Micheal Farrell, Treasurer – Paula Carberry, Secretary – Tracy Gray Farrell, Diving Officer – John Tully, Training Officer – Paul Newman, Safety Officer – Fergal McElgunn. The club would like to thank the outgoing committee on all their hard work over the last couple of years.
This year our sponsored Christmas day swim will take place after mass and hot showers and refreshments will be provided afterwards in the club house. Anyone who wished to take part can get sponsorship cards from any club member or in Joe & Martina O Brien’s shop.

The Knitting and Crochet group that meets in the library has just changed its meeting day. They will now meet every Tuesday in the library from 2pm to 4pm.

Christmas Fair
Lanesborough Parish Hall and Tidy Towns groups are hosting a Christmas Fair and Market on Sunday next 10th December in the Parish Hall from 11 am to 1 pm. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be arriving at the hall on a pony and trap driven by the Hanley family, Lehery, with a treat for all children. All stalls are booked out. A fun morning is ensured.
Yearly annual -Teathbha
The annual Historical Journal of the County Longford Historical Society is back on the bookshelves once again. Teathbha 2023 is edited by Martin Morris, County Longford Archivist. The journal is, as usual, laden down with many excellent stories and records and it should prove to be essential reading. The journal is priced at just €12 and it is on sale in O’Brien’s shop.
Tidy Town’s Lotto stands at €15,000
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery for Tuesday 5th December stands at a very exciting €15,000 and never would it be more welcome than on the weeks leading up to Christmas. This is a wonderful opportunity to win the €15,000 for just €2 or 3 envelopes for €5.
The draw took place in O’Brien’s Shop and the numbers drawn on Tuesday 28th November for the jackpot of €15.000 were 1, 13, 15 and 29. There was no winner of the jackpot. The winner of the €50 prize was Jonathan Farrell, c/o XLNTEE, and the three €20 prizes went to Anthony Lannon c/o Yacht Bar, John Rice, The Abbey and M. O’Halloran, The Green.

When Stones Speak
Longford Historical Society are pleased to announce the forthcoming launch of “WHEN STONES SPEAK”- Headstone inscriptions and local history from the cemeteries of Killashee, Clondra and Ballinakill – a magnificent book of 180 A4 pages and over 630 headstone inscriptions and photographs, that has taken many years to complete. While the majority of the headstones are associated with Killashee parish, there are quite a few with Lanesboro addresses and across the Shannon in Erra, Derryhaney and the Tarmonbarry areas. The book will be launched by a guest personality and will take place in Longford Library on Tue 12th December at 7.00pm. Everybody is welcome to attend.

Weekly Card Game
The results of the weekly card game held in St. Mary’s Hall Lanesboro on Sunday night last are: 1st Niall & Liz Hughes. Joint 2nd Mick Finnan & Pat Rock and Seamus Casey & Aidan Carly. Last game winners were P.J & Bridie Glennon. As usual light refreshments are served at the game. No partner needed. The game commences at 8.30pm every Sunday night.
Rathcline 50/50
On Monday 27th November the Rathcline GAA 50/50 weekly draw took place in Adie’s Bar. The winning envelope drawn out was in the name of Jack Naughton, Ballyglass Court and he won the massive jackpot of €725. Well done Jack on your great win.

Rathcline AGM
Rathcline GAA invites you to our Club Mass in St Mary’s Church on Saturday 9th December at 6.30pm and to join the club and LanesBrew, in a joint initiative, for light refreshments and Carol singing after the 6.30pm Mass. A special Christmas personality will join us for the evening.
The club’s players from the senior club, ladies club and Mothers and Others are organising the Lanesborough GOAL mile on St Stephen’s Day at 12.30pm. You, your family and friends are invited to join us to walk a mile (as short or as far as you wish to walk) on the Walkway at club grounds at Clonbonny. After the walk, join us for a Christmas chat and a cup of tea in the clubhouse. If you wish you can also make a donation which will go to the GOAL charity to help it with its lifesaving work across the world. This is a new initiative by the club and we hope that this charity event will become a key date in the club and community calendar for the years ahead.
The clubs AGM has been rescheduled to Thursday 21st Dec at 8pm. Please join us as the club reviews it’s activities during 2023 and looks forward to 2024.
Co. Longford Citizens Advice Centre
Co. Longford Citizens Information Service has recently been restructured and is currently under new management.
They continue to provide free, impartial, and confidential information, advice, and advocacy services to the public on social services, rights, and entitlements. The range of areas covered by the citizens information centre are extremely wide including social welfare rights and entitlements and other social issues such as employment, health services, housing, education, family matters and consumer rights, all where people need access to information.
The way people access the services changed during Covid and now they currently deal with a large number of queries over the telephone, however, they continue to provide our drop-in times and welcome people to their face-to-face service five mornings a week from the Longford office. The services are provided by experienced trained Information Officers who are there to help you.
The centre is located on level 1 within Longford Shopping Centre and direction can be obtained at the reception desk from Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 5.00pm. The office closes for lunch from 1pm until 2pm.
The Employability Service
is an Employment and Recruitment Service to assist people with a disability or health issue to pursue and maintain employment in the open labour market. If you are over 18, have a disability or health issue and would consider working part-time then you should contact Employment Services Roscommon support to help find you a job in your area. This is a confidential and free individualised service funded by the Department of Social Protection.
Are you managing mental health issues? There is the opportunity for Individual Placement and Support (IPS) that is funded by the HSE and offers a range of tailored personalised supports to people using mental health services who wish to work. ALONE is a national organisation that enables older people to age at home.
Our work is for all older people and aims to improve physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. We have a national network of staff and volunteers who provide an integrated system of Support Coordination, Practical Supports, Befriending, a variety of Phone Services, Social Prescribing, Housing with Support and Assistive Technology.
We use individualised support plans, to address health, financial benefits and supports, social care, housing, transport and other arising needs using technology and through harnessing other services.
We work to empower the whole sector of community support for older people through our Community Impact Network that provides Training, IT support and resources to other organisations.
Support line for older people
ALONE manage a national support line and additional support for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to Covid-19. Professional staff is available to answer queries and give advice and reassurance where necessary. The support line is open seven days a week from 8am until 8pm. Text TALK to 50808 to begin.
Alcohol Anon Meetings
Relatives and friends of alcoholics are welcome to attend meetings in the Family Centre building at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral on St. Mel’s Road, any Tuesday evening at 7pm.

Emergency Department deals with serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies if you need urgent medical help. They are open 24 hours a day and can be contacted by phoning 999 or 112.
Smart Recovery
SMART recovery is an evidence-based addiction recovery support group where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club
The club held its AGM at the clubhouse in Clonbonny on Friday 17th November before a large attendance. The success of the club over the past 12 months were highlighted with players and management complimented for the tremendous work done on the playing and training fields. The club is buoyed with the continued-on pitch progression of all our players over the year and a great thanks must go to GPO coach Ciaran Carey and all our club coaches for their great work with all the teams and schools during the year.
The club encourages more and more people too get involved with coaching. There is a wonderful and committed team of coaches – see list below. The club urges everyone that gets involved to complete the coaching courses to help continue the club’s great development. These courses will be done through the club and you will have excellent support. These courses are open to both male and female.

Advent Retreat Day: As we prepare for Christmas you are all invited to an Advent Retreat Day on Saturday next 9th December in Ballyleague Church from 11am to 1pm. During the retreat there will be recitation of the Holy Rosary; Adoration of the Blessed sacrament; Confessions; A talk on Advent – “What is God speaking to us as we prepare for Christmas.
Christmas Tree/Flowers: The parish is seeking for parishioners to sponsor a Christmas tree for all the churches and to help with the cost of decorating the trees. All donations should be put in envelopes and indicated accordingly. Thank you in anticipation of your generosity.
Carol Service: There will be a Carol service in Ballagh Church on Sunday next 10th December at 5pm. This choir service is organised by the parish choir in preparation for Christmas.

Thank You: The Parish Hall committee would lie to thank everyone that turned up, made donations, sponsored prizes and supported the recent Table Quiz in aid of Hall. Thanks also to St. Faithleach’s for the use of their clubhouse. The sum raised amounted to €1,508.
Eucharistic Adoration:
There is always an hour of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament every Friday in Ballyleague Church from 10.30am to 11.30am and in Curraghroe Church from 8pm to 9pm. You are invited to go along to spend some quiet time of prayer with God.
Envelopes for 2023/24:
Church offering envelopes in boxes are available in the church for distribution. A special word of thanks to the distributors for all their on-going work.

Short Break Scheme: Would you be interested in providing home from home short breaks for children and adults who have an intellectual disability? Brothers of Charity Services Ireland, Homeshare Roscommon are recruiting host carers. Training and support will be provided. There will be a tax exempt allowance paid. Our Annual General Meeting for the Club take place at St. Faithleachs clubhouse on Thursday 30th November (Senior) at 8pm. All welcome to attend to voice opinions and share ideas. New volunteers and coaches always welcome.
Christmas Draw
Our annual Christmas Draw is back with a very desirable €5,000 first prize. Tickets will soon be available from all local outlets and committee members. Best of luck to all and your continued support is very appreciated by us.
