Community College Concert

The annual Lanesboro Community College Christmas concert created and organised put on by the Transition Year students will take place this Thursday evening in Lanesboro Parish Hall at 7pm.

Rehearsing has been ongoing for the past number of weeks and if previous year’s is anything to go by Thursday evening, then the attendance is really in for a treat.

Former resident passes away

On Saturday 2nd December one of the country’s best-known businessmen and characters passed at his residence in Rosslare Strand, Co. Wexford. Born in Galway Dessie Hynes became a resident of Lanesboro at the age of 11 years when following his mother’s death, he moved in with his grandparents, the Mc Crann’s, who ran a thriving business and dance hall where the Convent was to replace. It is especially fitting that I am writing these lines between two storms as Dessie was truly a force of nature. He started business with a travelling shop, before moving to Longford Town’s Main Street with a newsagents and toy shop before moving to Dublin where he bought a pub – his first of many. After many pubs in Dublin, he ended up with the holy grail that was the widely known and popular pub O’Donoghue’s. Merrion Row where he spent many happy years before his itchy feet meant he was off buying more pubs. Dessie was a man of great spirit, exceptional generosity with a knowledge that no university could match. He had a devilment and wit that was unequalled. Dessie was as loyal a friend that anybody could have and a wonderfully astute advisor. The stories of him and indeed the stories he had to tell will live long in the memory and draw many a smile to a multitude of people. He never differentiated between the haves and the have nots, everyone was equal in his eye and were treated that way. His loyalty to his native place never waned at any time and for that he will always be remembered. When it is said ‘his likes will never be seen again’ it seldom holds but in Dessie Hynes this is a true fact. His 94 years on earth were indeed a tornado of happiness and activity.

May Dessie rest in peace.

Dessie married local Longford lady Celine Corkery who along with their daughter Annette his sisters Evelyn and Maura, and his brother Paddy predeceased him. He is survived by his family Thomas, Geraldine, Tony, Therese, Paul, Aideen, Winter, Kevin and Nina, his sister Allyson relatives and many many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

Fire on Main Street

On Saturday last a fire at a residential property at the back of LanesBrew Coffee shop created a great deal of concern to those in the vicinity. Thankfully, there was nobody in the residence at the time and due to the prompt actions of the Lanesboro Fire Brigade there was not a lot of damage done to the property. At this initial stage of investigation, it is believed that an electrical fault was the cause of the fire.

The actions and speed of the response by the fire brigade had to be seen to be believed. They began with a sprint to put out the fire and that swiftness did not stop until the fire was totally extinguished. Compliments to the local fire brigade team for their prompt action and the professionalism shown in dealing with the fire.

Searching your Family Tree

Particularly since Covid time when people had a lot of time on their hands a big number of people both home and abroad have taken a great interest on their family tree and have begun to search for their roots. Speaking for personal experience and stories of others your own search can bring you so far and then your search become a blur, like searching in a maze.

The Killian Homeplace Family & Genealogy Centre in Fermoyle has become a lifeline for so many people seeking to trace or continue the search into their family roots.

The research team are excellent in researching where even the flimsiest family comment will lead the team to astonishing family tree connections.

Christmas Day Swim

What is a long and great tradition on Christmas morning is the annual Christmas Day Swim. Hardy souls from all over the area come along and take part. This is a wonderful sight with so many taking the dip and the bridge well lined with supporting crowds.

The swim will take place following 11.15am Mass in Lanesboro and we urge big numbers to come along, lend their support and meet and greet all that came home for Christmas. Following the swim there will be hot showers and refreshments available in the clubhouse.

Sponsorship cards are available from club members or from Martina & Joe O’Brien’s shop.

Ballyleague Lights

The official turning on of the Christmas Lights in Ballyleague took place after 7pm mass on Saturday last 9th December. Lights committee Chairman Noel Moran thanked all present and reflected upon the year just passed and lamented the loss of those in the community who had passed away during the year. In particular, he mentioned Pauline Farrell, who was a tremendous supporter of the Lights in many different ways, Tom Corcoran and Dennis Dunne who were also tremendous advocates of the lights. Noel alluded and lamented the passing of Dennis who would have been the main instigator of the setting up of the Lights committee in Ballyleague and who toiled at them for many years. In recognition of the contribution that Both Tom Corcoran and Dennis Dunne made to the lights over the years the Committee felt it fitting to invite their spouses Mary Corcoran and Noreen Dunne to perform the honour of turning on the Lights. Fr Daniel Uftioa blessed the crib and acknowledged the great work of the lights committee. Fr Dan was assisted by a colleague who was visiting from Kilbeggan.

Although the lights are officially on the committee are hoping to have additional light features in place between Inver filling station and the Bridge in the coming weeks. The committee also wish to thank all those who have assisted in any way from putting up the lights, providing power or supporting us via our Church gate collection or go fund me page.

Pictured below are Ballyleague Lights Chairman Noel Moran along with Noreen Dunne and Mary Corcoran

Community Games

The Community Games in Lanesboro and Ballyleague Kilgefin has a long and successful history with many All-Ireland champions along with medallists galore in the All-Ireland’s, County and parish competitions.

Community Games give any young person boy or girl the opportunity to display their skills and abilities in a huge array of almost 60 different disciplines. Community Games is primarily a parent driven local organisation with parents anxious to ensure that the Community Games is good for their youngsters and their equally talented friends.

This is the time of the year that the AGM’s for both local Community Games groups takes place, and it is hugely important that all parents support their kids by getting involved in the formation of the committee for the coming year. It is very important to attend the AGM’s if only to show your support to the incoming committee. If you have recently arrived in our community the Community Games gives you that wonderful opportunity to meet and get to know locals through the involvement of their youngsters.

Please keep an eye on the Lanesboro notes, either in the Longford Leader or online, so that you can attend the AGM meeting and involve yourself or turn up just to give your support and backing for the elected committee.

Huge Success

The Talent Show hosted by the students of Lanesboro Community College on Thursday night last was once again a wonderful occasion. The show itself was designed and led by the Transition Year students and their vision for a great night out was an outstanding success.
