Lanesborough/Ballyleague Twinning Association
Following the meeting last week it is all systems go with the community of Lanesboro/Ballyleague to twin with the community of Inguiniel in Brittany, France. The meeting was well supported by clubs and associations and it is wonderful to feel that our community will be invigorated with an exciting build up to the twinning both here and in Inguiniel
The people of Inguiniel are already committed to establishing such a relationship with Lanesboro Ballyleague. Inguiniel is a community similar in size to our own, situated in the region of Brittany in North West France.
In the lead up we will need the full support of our community to create an atmosphere of welcome to Lanesboro and Ballyleague. There will also be a couple of fundraising events in the coming weeks and months and we will ask of your fullest support.
Former local resident dies
It was with a great sadness I learned of the death in Watford, England on Thursday 8th February of Jimmy Hurson, The Green. Jimmy was a regular visitor back to his native sod and was always delighted to meet and chat with locals recalling the memories of growing up in Lanesboro. Jimmy, an Instrumental Electrician began his working career with Bord na Mona before moving on to run successful businesses. He was predeceased by his parents, Mick and Bridget, his wife Phil and sister Bridie. Jimmy is survived by his wife Norma, and family Mark, Brian and Suzanne, his sister Rosemary, brothers Mickie and John and extended family to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Launch
The official launch of the Lanesboro Ballyleague St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place in Clarke’s Bar on Friday night next 1st march at 8.30pm. It would be great to have a huge attendance at the launch showing your massive support for the committee and the great work they continue to do for our community.
With St. Patrick’s Day only a few weeks away it is time for our focus to turn to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Individuals, clubs, organisations and businesses with their creative skills are the mainstay of a wonderful parade that has been happening in our community for the past number of years. We look forward to wonderful celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day with another spectacular parade and we look forward to seeing your great creativity again this year. There will be a number of category winners; Best Club, Best Junior, Best Vintage, Best Business, Best Dressed Window, Most Original who will win a trophy and €50 and the Best Overall Float will receive €300 and a trophy.

Pedestrian Crossing
It was great to see on Thursday last the final part of the new pedestrian crossing been completed. The yellow lights are now flashing creating an awareness of the crossing and there are also two new overhead street lights over the crossing.
Considering the amount of continuous traffic through the town I feel it would be very beneficial to have signs on all approach roads, warning drivers and creating the awareness of the new pedestrian crossing.
Death
It was with great sadness we learned of the death on Saturday 10th February at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon of Elizabeth Hensey, Weekfield. Elizabeth originally from the neighbouring townsland of Lisnaria was predeceased by her husband Sean almost 6 years ago, her parents Paddy and Bridie and her sister Kathleen. A number of years ago along with Sean she returned from Dublin with their family to her own local community. She was a quiet lady with a great heart. Elizabeth was a real mother who dedicated herself to her family. She will be sadly missed by her neighbours and friends and by her daughter Carmel.
Elizabeth remains reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home followed by removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. She was laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery following Mass of the Resurrection in the Church of the Holy Rosary. To her daughter Carmel, grandsons Dominic and Luke, sisters Bridie, Marion and Carmel, brothers Sean and Padraic, aunt Lucy, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
St. Patrick’s Day Draw
The St. Patrick’s Day committee is again holding a fundraising draw to raise funds to help defray the cost of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
Tickets are on sale in all local shops, from the Parade committee or in O’Brien’s and we urge you to fully support the draw.
Tickets are priced at 3 for €5 and the prizes are €100 for 5 lucky winners. The draw will take place in Clarke’s Bar on St. Patrick’s night.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Liz and Pat Brennan their family, Lismacmanus and extended families, on the death on Wednesday 21st February of Paul O’Grady, Gaybrook, Mullingar.
Lough Ree Athletic Club
The wonderful Indoor Athletic Arena at TUS Athlone hosted the U12, 13, 14 Connaught Indoor Championships on Saturday. This event attracted 1,233 entries from 616 athletes. Lough Ree had athletes competing across a range of events.
For some of our members it was their first experience of a major event and given the numbers competing, all performed well. Special thanks to James and Paudie Murray (both U11) who at short notice joined the Boys U12 relay team, it was their first competition both ran well and then went on to play a soccer match for Ballyboro afterwards. Thanks to their families also.
Tadhg Shea U12 competed in 3 events, Relay, 60m and 600m where he was extremely unlucky not to qualify for the All-Ireland Finals by 0.35 of a second. Well done also to Hugh Creedon who competed in Long Jump and 600m where he recorded a personal best time.
Performance of the day, was Andrew Nolan’s U13 Shot Putt Championship throw of 14.30 meters, a new Connacht record. Congrats Andrew, all your hard work is paying off.
Well done also to Longford Athletic Club for being top of the medal table after day one.
Trócaire Lenten campaign
Trócaire’s Lenten Campaign this year, focuses on the country of Malawi. It is one of the least developed countries in the world. In the Machinga district, Malita and her family must make a one-hour trip up to five times a day to collect water. Please support Trócaire’s efforts to create access to clean, safe, and reliable water supplies by taking home a Trócaire box and endeavour to fill it during Lent.

Sympathy

Festival of Lights
Last weekend saw the culmination of many months of hard work in preparation for the Festival of Lights 2024 in the old army barracks in Longford town. For anyone attending it was a huge and very creative spectacle with an amazing colourful display of lights in so many guises. Many congratulations to Arts Officer Shane Crossan, Artistic Director Caroline Conway and their team of artists who had the thousands of attendants in awe of their work.

Former resident passes away
It is very regrettable to learn of the death in the care of Roscommon Hospice of one of our former residents Ben Balfe on Monday 19th February. Ben lived in Killerney on the outskirts of Roscommon Town. He was predeceased by his father John, mother Catherine and infant brother Gerard. He was a trained mechanic and was renowned for his excellence at his trade. He worked for many years at his father’s garage business before working at Westward in Strokestown. There are many happy memories of growing up with Ben in Lanesboro when he lived in Knock and in particular his good nature and kindness. His death brought great sadness to our vintage from the area, his family and to his many friends. Ben reposed in Smyth’s Funeral Home before his removal to the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon. His Funeral Mass took place on Thursday before he was then laid to rest in St. Coman’s Cemetery, Roscommon.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Anne, son Alan, daughter Amanda, his brothers John, Marcus, Denis and Terry, his sisters Liz, Joan, Kay and Grace, relatives and many friends.
Defibrillator
The new Defibrillator course will commence on Thursday 7th March and anyone interested in doing the course or doing their refresher course should leave their names with Martina O’Brien, Corner Shop. Call in or phone 086 3858934 or 3321107.
The committee will be contacting everyone that has already given their names and phone numbers. The training will be done on three Thursday nights 7th, 14th, and 21st March.
Tidy Town’s Lotto stands at €15,000
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery for Tuesday 27th February stands at a very exciting jackpot limit of €15,000. With the jackpot having reached its maximum this is a wonderful opportunity to win the €15,000 for just €2 or 3 envelopes for €5.
The draw took place in O’Brien’s Shop and the numbers drawn on Tuesday 20th February for the jackpot of €15.000 were 1, 4, 14, and 18. There was no winner of the jackpot. The €50 prize was won by Pam Feeney, Rathcline and the three €20 prizes were won by Ronie Rutherford, Cnoc na Gaoithe, Mary Rice, The Abbey and Jay, Leah and Becky Hanley, Corrigeen.
The next draw will take place on Tuesday morning 27th February and every Tuesday morning in O’Brien’s Shop.

Roscommon Community Challenge Friday
We are entering into the final week of the 2024 Roscommon Community Challenge. This very popular and hugely supported event takes place on Friday night March 1st at 8pm. This year the event comprises of a 5 and 8 km reasonably flat, fully marshalled route around Roscommon Town.
This community event is for everyone walkers, runners, joggers, individuals, teams, and families, those looking to set a time for 2024 and those that would like to improve on previous timings. We are very grateful to the members of Roscommon Harriers running club who help with all the timings on the night.
As in previous years this challenge has proven extremely popular with a great response from people who signed up to be part of the training programme. This year has seen the largest ever number of walkers and runners signing up to our training plan, There has been huge progression since training started in early January and participants are really looking forward to getting to the starting line. Our new routes will be revealed nearer the date.
Without doubt, none of this would be possible without the encouragement and professionalism received from Roscommon Sports Partnership and organisers are extremely grateful to Co-Ordinator Noel Feeley and his staff David Brady, Atilia Tavers and Martin Hannon for all their support.

Roscommon Special Olympics and Roscommon Sports Park are the 2024 chosen Charities.. Roscommon Special Olympics are a remarkable bunch of athletes, and the club are delighted to be the beneficiaries of this year’s Challenge. There is a thriving club within the town with athletes attending sessions weekly in various sports and activities. In September 2023, The Club lost one of its most valued coaches and mentors in Mrs Maire Allen. To recognise the great work done by Maire with regard to both Roscommon Special Olympics and the Community Sports Park, Organisers have dedicated the last mile of the event to Maire’s Memory. Speaking this week, Jacqueline McCormack stated that this will be our way to pay our treasured respects to Maire and to most importantly thank her for all she done for us, we hope she knows how much she is missed and how very grateful we all are that she was in our lives. Roscommon lost a legend the day she passed away. To honour Maire legacy , to remember all the good work she done in the area of special needs and disability, to support Roscommon Special Olympics, and simply to remember the wonderful woman that was Maire Allen, anyone that that might not be taking part in the actual event on the night can should they so wish make a donation to Maire’s Memory Mile through this link. Weekly Card Game
The weekly card game takes place every Sunday night in St. Mary’s hall. The results of Sunday night last 25th February are 1st with a record breaking 16 games were Kay Featherstone & Anne Corcoran. Well done ladies. 2nd with 13 games were Pat & Geraldine Greene. Last game winners were Frank & Brian. Raffle winners were Martin McDermott, Kay Featherstone, Tom Mulvihill & Anne Corcoran. The game takes place every Sunday night with light refreshments served.

Short Breaks Scheme

Rathcline 50/50
On Monday 19th February the Rathcline GAA 50/50 weekly draw took place in The Yacht Bar. The winning envelope drawn out was in the name Kathleen G Hoare, Roscommon. The jackpot for the draw on Monday night stood at an excellent €670.

Co. Longford Citizens Advice Centre
Co. Longford Citizens Information Service has recently been restructured and is currently under new management.
They continue to provide free, impartial, and confidential information, advice, and advocacy services to the public on social services, rights, and entitlements. The range of areas covered by the citizens information centre are extremely wide including social welfare rights and entitlements and other social issues such as employment, health services, housing, education, family matters and consumer rights, all where people need access to information.
The way people access the services changed during Covid and now they currently deal with a large number of queries over the telephone, however, they continue to provide our drop-in times and welcome people to their face-to-face service five mornings a week from the Longford office. The services are provided by experienced trained Information Officers who are there to help you.
The centre is located on level 1 within Longford Shopping Centre and direction can be obtained at the reception desk from Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 5.00pm. The office closes for lunch from 1pm until 2pm.
The Employability Service
is an Employment and Recruitment Service to assist people with a disability or health issue to pursue and maintain employment in the open labour market. If you are over 18, have a disability or health issue and would consider working part-time then you should contact Employment Services Roscommon support to help find you a job in your area. This is a confidential and free individualised service funded by the Department of Social Protection.
Are you managing mental health issues? There is the opportunity for Individual Placement and Support (IPS) that is funded by the HSE and offers a range of tailored personalised supports to people using mental health services who wish to work. ALONE is a national organisation that enables older people to age at home.
Our work is for all older people and aims to improve physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. We have a national network of staff and volunteers who provide an integrated system of Support Coordination, Practical Supports, Befriending, a variety of Phone Services, Social Prescribing, Housing with Support and Assistive Technology.
We use individualised support plans, to address health, financial benefits and supports, social care, housing, transport and other arising needs using technology and through harnessing other services.
We work to empower the whole sector of community support for older people through our Community Impact Network that provides Training, IT support and resources to other organisations.
Support line for older people
ALONE manage a national support line and additional support for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to Covid-19. Professional staff is available to answer queries and give advice and reassurance where necessary. The support line is open seven days a week from 8am until 8pm. Text TALK to 50808 to begin.
Alcohol Anon Meetings
Relatives and friends of alcoholics are welcome to attend meetings in the Family Centre building at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral on St. Mel’s Road, any Tuesday evening at 7pm.

Roscommon University Hospital Injury Unit is available from 8am to 8pm seven days, a week and the contact number is 09066 32212.
Emergency Department deals with serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies if you need urgent medical help. They are open 24 hours a day and can be contacted by phoning 999 or 112.
Smart Recovery
SMART recovery is an evidence-based addiction recovery support group where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour.

A musical treat from Uganda will take place in Longford Methodist Church on Wednesday 13th March at 7pm. The Abaana 20 Children’s Choir will entertain the audience with song, dance and stories. There is no admission charge but donations to Abaana will be much appreciated.

Thank You: On behalf of Bishop Kevin Doran and the Missionary Society of St. Paul, I wish to express my gratitude and appreciation to all my beloved parishioners for your generous contribution in support of the missions. Our Junior Ladies got their 2024 league campaign underway this evening against St. Dominic’s in Knockroghery. The ladies put in a massive effort and just lost out by the smallest of margins. Hard luck to the ladies.

Roscommon: Well done to Diarmuid and the Roscommon men who had a fantastic victory over Monaghan on Sunday afternoon in the Allianz Division One League.
Well Done: Well done to our U10 Boys who took part in the Go Games in Dr. Hyde Park at half time in the Roscommon v Monaghan. The boys done brilliantly and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. Thank you to our opponents Kilmore for the games and to Roscommon GAA for inviting us in to take part.
Congratulations: Congratulations to Roscommon GAA Chairperson Brian Carroll who has formally taken up the role of Chairperson of the Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) at the Annual GAA Congress in Newry.
This is a great honour for Brian, his family, his club Kilmore GAA and Roscommon GAA.
