Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 6th May 2024

Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Death

It was with great sadness we learned of the unexpected death on Tuesday 30th April of Sean Hanley, Lisnaria, Roscommon. Sean born and reared in Lisnaria was predeceased by his parents Paddy and Bridie Hanley and his sisters Kathleen and Elizabeth. Sean, a lifelong farmer worked with ESB until his retirement where he was recognised as a great workmate with a great work ethic. While he was always diligent about his farm he was noted for his keen interest in walking and shooting. He also worked tirelessly in developing Hanley Fuels where he had built up a large clientele. Sean was a quietly spoken man and a man that would always help out those that were in need of assistance. He will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him. The attendance at the reposing of his remains at his residence bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held.

Sean reposed at his residence on Thursday last and the removal of his remains took place to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Friday for the Mass of the Resurrection. Burial took place afterwards to Cloontuskert Cemetery. To his wife Betty, daughter Sharon, sons James and John, sisters Bridie, Marion and Carmel, brother Padraig, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Beginners Pilates

Beginners basic Pilates classes (4 weeks only) with Regina will commence on Thursday May 9th at 7pm in St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro.
The classes will be focusing on Breathing, Flexibility, Balance, Muscle strength and Tone, enhanced use of back and limbs using the Pilates technique.
Family Fun Day

Last year the Tidy Town committees and teams of Lanesboro and Ballyleague were frustrated by the inclement summer of 2023 having to cancel their very first Family Fun Day collaboration on a number of occasions. The Family Fun Day was rearranged and fixed for Sunday last Sunday 5th May on May Bank Holiday weekend. It fitted in nicely with the events of the second hosting of the Summer School and Gathering of Boats as the owners celebrate the beginning of the boating season. The boat owners turned out in their numbers and the added attraction of lectures and walks hosted by Dr. Harman Murtagh who spoke eloquently on the Quakers and Inchcleraun islands and Eanna Ní Lamhna who led walks through Commons North Woodland enlightening everybody on the flora and fauna all along this beautiful walk.

Sunday started dull and overcast but as the start time of 1pm approached the sun began to break through and the huge attendance got the most glorious of afternoons enjoying all the events, challenges and kiddies entertainment.

The collaboration of both tidy towns proved to be an outstanding success showing that although we are divided by the river we are a single community that has the wonderful ability of providing entertainment for all our community and welcoming strangers and friends back to Lanesboro Ballyleague for such an outstanding event. The attendance for the Fun Day was absolutely huge and it was great to see so many locals enjoying a wonderful day on the banks of the Shannon. It was a very special day for Lanesboro and Ballyleague Tidy Towns committees and an acknowledgement of their outstanding great work. I earnestly hope that this is just the humble beginnings of something huge for us all. To see the amount of people that turned out to help prepare and steward the entire day was truly heart-warming and another sign of the outright strength of our community.

Well done to everyone involved in the Summer School, Gathering of Boats and the Family Fun Day your organisational skills were terrific and your dedication to the weekend was truly magnificent.

Pictured are the legendary Walt Disney cartoon characters Mickey (Tom Gill) and Minnie (Nuala Malone) Mouse who were the most popular and most photographed at the Family Fun Day.

Thank You

The organising committee of the joint Tidy Towns Fun Day were delighted to see such huge crowds at the event. It was truly a magnificent community event enjoyed by all.

The committee wish to thank everyone who support the event or helped out in any way possible to make the event successful.

Former local lady passes away

The Casey family has been synonymous with the Main Street for many generations and it was with a great sense of sadness we learned of the death on Monday 29th April at St. James Hospital, Dublin of Philomena Johnston, nee Casey, Churchtown, Dublin. She was predeceased by her husband Bill and son Kevin. Philomena is survived by her daughter Maureen, sister Mary, brothers John, Gurteengar, and Michael, Newtowncashel, relatives and friends to who we extend our deepest sympathy.

Darkness into Light

Never before has the annual Pieta House Darkness into Light sunrise walk taken a greater significance in our community than it has this year. The walk will take place at 4.15am on this Saturday morning 11th May at the Mall in Longford Town and from Ballymahon Vocational School; In county Roscommon the walk will take place from the Convent Gym, Roscommon Town and from Strokestown Community & Sports Centre. I hear on the grapevine that there may even be Darkness into Light Walk in Lanesboro. More information as it becomes available will follow.

It is very important that those that feeling down or depressed that they talk to someone and tremendous work in this respect continues to be done by Pieta House. We are reliably informed that men are the least likely to seek help or talk about the problems that is affecting them and talking does not create a stigma but a clarity of mind.

Statistics shows us that suicide was the most common cause of death among people aged 15 to 34. The statistics also show that the ratio is more than twice the number of males as against females commit suicide.

It is vitally important that everyone reading this should always be encouraging people that they feel may be vulnerable to talk of their concerns with, family, friends or use the excellent and professional services of Pieta House.

In 2022 Pieta delivered 50,000 hours of intervention and bereavement counselling. Pieta received almost 100,000 crisis support calls and texts over that same period and they directly supported over 700 households devastated by the loss of a loved one by suicide.

All the services of Pieta House are private, free of charge and all the staff are fully qualified, providing a profession one-to-one therapeutic service.

“We all have one common goal where no-one should feel alone or so afraid that suicidal ideation of self-harming becomes an option they choose”

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Freda and Josie Connaughton on the death of Freda’s brother Joe McDonagh, Knocklyon, Dublin and formerly Gurteen, Sligo on Thursday 2nd May. Joe was a regular and popular visitor to Lanesboro. He will be sadly missed by all that remember him so fondly.

Women’s Midsummer Retreat

Rest, Recover, Reconnect.

The retreat will be facilitated by Chartered Health Psychologist Marianne Fallon on Saturday 22nd June from 10am to 4pm at Strokestown Park.

The expectations of modern life are constant and demanding.  Research shows women offer the most emotional support to others, repeatedly giving beyond our limits. When do we make time to rest, receive and recover?

Join the Women’s Midsummer Retreat in the beautiful grounds of Strokestown Park House and invest in a day of rest and recovery.  Open yourself to a different way of being, through engaging all of your senses in the woodlands and gardens.  Learn how to develop a relationship with natural allies and make connections between your inner and outer landscapes.

Immersion in nature can support you to slow down and emotionally regulate.  Move from ‘ego’ to ‘eco’ and experience a deeper, more embodied way of moving in the world.  Step into the brightest time of the year with a renewed sense of self and well-being.

This women’s retreat will be led by two experienced chartered psychologists.  We are passionate about the benefits that nature can offer women in moving towards a more authentic and embodied sense of self.
