Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Shauna Bergin, her partner Michael Neilan, their daughter Kayla, her sister Nicole, her brother Michael and their extended families on the death of Shauna’s father Michael Bergin in Cambodia on the 7th August.

Remembering one of our own

On Tuesday last I received a message from Mark McGann, son of Patricia and the late Harry McGann, Ballyleague, informing me that he was on his way to the official opening of the recently renovated park in the city of Somerville, Massachusetts. Kenneth (Ken) Kelly, son of Kathleen and the late Tommy Kelly, Carraroe left Lanesboro for a future in the US and it was in Somerville that he settled with his wife Kim and built up a number of businesses. He quickly built up a respected reputation as a leader of a number of businesses in the city. In 2014 Ken received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Somerville Chamber of Commerce. Ken was a young man who had achieved so much in his all too short life before his death took place on 15th December 2015. He was always a forward thinking and creative man and from our conversations he had many more ideas and plans for his adopted city. In a reference to Ken it was said his commitment to Somerville “is one of service, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his community”. Ken’s name lives long in Somerville and the official opening of the park in his name and his honour ensures that he will be remembered for ever more. Lanesboro/Ballyleague was represented by Mark and his lifelong friend and President of the Camogie Association Brian Molloy.

Pictured in the photograph taken by Mark McGann at the official cutting of the tape and the opening of the Ken Kelly Park are Ken’s wife Kim, Mayor of Somerville Katjana Ballantyne, Brian Molloy, Alan Kelly, Ken’s brother, and beside Alan is Ken’s son Michael.

Return of Bridge Club

The return of the Wednesday night Bridge club will take place on Wednesday 17th September at 7.15pm.

With the excellent weather and light that we are currently having this is an ideal opportunity for all our budding photographers to get out and get great photographs of all the beauty that surrounds us.

Tom Wins

The annual Iverk Show in Kilkenny is the oldest Agricultural Show in Ireland and it draws competitors from all over the country. The show is held in Piltown every year and this year was a memorable one for one of our most creative artists when Tom Gill’s entry won the Irene Purcell Perpetual Cup for the Best Overall Adult entry. Tom is forever thinking and creating some spectacular creations and this year is no exception with his winning entry ‘Money Laundering’ see attachment. Creativity is what we have come to expect and there in neve time that he disappoints.

Poetry book almost sold out

The new book of poetry Songs of the Sesh – Poems to be made music by Dan Magan brings to life the life experiences and tribulations of a young man just breaking through the 30 year age. Dan, a vibrant young man spent some time in preparing this book and it is a fabulous achievement for one so young. It is unique to have the younger generation delving into poetry and perhaps it is a book that his contemporaries should explore into and experience the craft of Dan’s writing. Going deep into his mind and thoughts Dan creates a wonderful book that will be very much worth reading and interpreting.  Dan’s success is due to his undoubted talent as can be seen with his book and we look forward to much more to come from him. Dan’s Songs of the Sesh – Poems to be made music is on sale in O’Brien’s costing just €10.

Guided tours on Land and Water

Tourism is a growing business countrywide and with the great summer we are having the town is presently doing a great tourist trade. Lanesboro has been doing much better this year than for many a long year. Be it the foreign tourists on their boating trips along the Shannon or those on day trips to the Shannon there have been great vibes in and around the area making the town quite busy. Honestly, there is no place better to be on the warm dry summers we are having than in Lanesboro and Ballyleague and enjoying all the beauty it has to offer.

A new and exciting venture has just been launched in the community and it offers just another tourism opportunity and an added attraction to the town. Many a time I have written about the great entrepreneurial spirit of our local people and the great ideas they have for the town and this new business will add greatly to what is available and it will also compliment the great work being done by Access for All.

We wish John Sorohan the very best of luck with his undertaking and we look forward to many people availing of John’s business.

Some exciting guided tours are now being offered to anyone that would like to explore Lanesboro.

The first is a ‘Town Walk’ where you will discover Lanesboro through time, including its industrial heritage. The duration of this tour is 45 minutes and there is a capacity from 2 to 10 persons.

The second walk is the ‘Commons Woodland Walk’ where there is a 2km or 4km option through our semi-native woodland with a local guide. The duration of this walk is 1 hour and it can cater for 2 to 10 people.

The third tour is the ‘Electric Boat trip’ that will be a short cruise north or south of the bridge, getting close to nature on the silent electric boat. This tour can accommodate 2 to 6 people and it will last for 1 hour.

Bookings can be made by phoning 085 838 8484.

The outstanding success of the daily number 426 Rural Link bus between Longford and Roscommon and vice versa has seen a new timetable being produced with additional stops being added on to the route. The bus from Monday to Saturday will pass through Lanesboro up to 17 times a week with a slight change on a Saturday so you will have to familiarise yourself with the new timetable. Sunday will see the 426 go through Lanesboro 8 times and again the new timetable must be checked.

The new timetable is available, free of charge, from O’Brien’s Corner Shop and there should be a copy in everyone’s house.

Championship starting to boil up

Next weekend will see the culmination of the group sections of the championship when St. Faithleach‘s and Rathcline bid to cement their places in the quarter finals of the Roscommon and Longford championships.

St. Faithleach’s will be the first team out on Friday night when they travel to Strokestown to take on Clann na nGael in a very important game. Clann with one win and one loss will be fighting hard to secure their place and with St. Faithleach’s having two wins they need to ensure the best possible position for the quarter final.

On Saturday 30th in Cashel Rathcline will take on Clonguish to see who comes out top of the league section. With both teams assured of the top two positions it promises to be an intriguing game with both unbeaten teams meeting to see who will emerge as table toppers. The throw-in in Cashel is at 7pm.

We look forward to both teams getting huge support for their games and we look forward to both teams emerging victorious.

Visit Corlea

As we are nearing the end of the holiday season and visitors arriving on our doorstep there is one jewel in particular in our crown that should be availed of and that is the wonder of the Corlea Iron Age Roadway and Visitor Centre. Built in 148 BC, this remarkable Togher—Europe’s largest discovered—was part of a significant route way, possibly connecting the ritual centre of Uisneach to the royal site of Rathcroghan. Crafted from solid oak planks, peat quickly swallowed the Trackway, perfectly preserving it for over 2,000 years.

Step inside the visitor centre to see an 18-metre stretch of this ancient road up close! Discover our ancestors’ stories, mysteries, and incredible craftsmanship.

Right on our doorstep the fabulous Iron Age Trackway situated in Corlea just 13km (7m) from Lanesboro is beginning to gain its rightful acknowledgement as a wonderful and unique place to visit. This very unique Trackway has an 18m long section of original Trackway the largest ever discovered in Europe and it is on display at the Visitor Centre. You learn how people lived at the time and murals depict implements of the time.

This is one of Ireland’s most famous hidden treasures and it is a place that should be visited hugely and it is first place to start with your visitors to this wonderful experience.

Visiting the centre is free of charge and the excellent and knowledgeable local facilitators will bring you though the experience and leave you in awe with the history of the Trackway. The knowledge and time given by the local guides at the centre is an experience in itself.

Continued interest in the New York trip

There has been a wonderful response shown by so many people expressing their interested in taking advantage of the Roscommon trip to New York next March/April.

Each year a Connacht team travels and it has become a huge social event for so many supporters and a golden opportunity for people to avail of group rates for a special trip to the Big Apple and next year it is Roscommon’s opportunity.

As part of the county trip, the St. Faithleachs GAA club is organising a trip to New York for the Roscommon/New York Connacht Championship game in Gaelic Park. The timing of the game is perfect as it will take place on the week ending Sunday, April 2nd (Easter Sunday). Flights would most likely be going out on the Thursday morning prior to the game and returning on the Monday night after. There is a great need for the numbers employed as local fire-fighters at Lanesboro Fire Station.
