Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Tuesday 20th January 2026

Apologies for being a day late, it was due to a service provider issue that only got rectified this morning.

Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Golden opportunity for some extra earnings

Last year the events ran in Lanesboro and Ballyleague drew in thousands of people taking part, spectating or supporting in the events. There were three main draws in particular that brought people from all over the country and that was the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Monday 17th March, the Gaelforce Great River Swim on Saturday 17th May and again at the Lough Ree Tri Club’s Two Province Triathlon on Saturday 12th July. The entire summer was the best weather in years drawing in greatly enhanced numbers to the area. Every year the our community in Lanesboro and Ballyleague makes themselves available for stewarding and this tremendous voluntary effort added greatly to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Gaelforce swim and the Tri Club.

In 2026 we are looking forward to welcoming the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Tuesday 17th March, the Gaelforce Great River Swim on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May and the Two Provinces Triathlon on the weekend of Friday 10th and 11th July.

There is a great shortage of accommodation locally to accommodate many of the participants and their supporters who want to come to Lanesboro/Ballyleague for these weekends. Indeed, there is a constant shortage of accommodation in the area to satisfy the needs of everyone that wants to stay in our beautiful area.

At a recent meeting it was suggested that to help in alleviating the accommodation problems that we should ask people that may have spare rooms for B&B or empty properties to make them available for the weekends at the going rates for those extra people that need to be accommodated and want to stay locally.

Presently, there is a register of available properties and accommodation being drawn up and if you have a spare room, an apartment or a house available could you please get in touch with Nuala to express your willingness to be involved. The contact number is 043 33 21977 up to 2pm daily or email your information to lanesborotourismcoop@gmail.com

Death

The absence from the town over the past eight years most definitely was a great loss to the community but the news of the death on Wednesday last 14th January at Innis Ree Nursing Home of Madge Finn, Rathcline Rd., brought great sadness to the entire community. To know that we will not see Madge’s beaming smile and feel the warmth of her greetings is leaving us all the poorer. She was a wonderful character full of life and she had a most vibrant, cheeky and light-hearted and cheerful personality. Madge had a great love of style and fashion as well as being a woman that loved being involved in many crafts.  Nobody was a stranger with Madge because once she greeted you her nature took over and you felt you were no longer a stranger. She may have been small in stature but that everything in her personality was huge. Madge always smiling, full of laughter and she was especially accommodating to anyone that was in need of a chat or a shoulder to cry on, her caring heart drew you in and comforted you in a most meaningful way. Madge had a great enthusiasm for her faith, family life, family development, golf and support for all the local people and teams that were representing the community. She was a woman who was never stuck for words and her descriptions of events and happenings would bring a smile to your face. Madge dying at the beginning of the year is very saddening but in her own inimitable way she would want everyone that knew her, her personality and wittiness, to go forward with the very same positivity that she had professed throughout her life. The attendance at her reposing and funeral was both huge and represented.

She was predeceased by her parents John and Ita, her brothers Christy, Jim, Tom, Con and Noel her sisters Mary and baby Anne.

Madge’s remains reposed in Glennon’s Funeral Home on Thursday and the Mass of the Resurrection took place in St. Mary’s Church after her removal from her family home on the Rathcline Rd., on Friday. Burial took place afterwards to Clonbonny Cemetery.

To her husband Jim, her children, John, Shirley and Michael, grandchildren, Fiona, Kitty, Zara, Emilie, Cillian, Fionnán, Kirsten, Oisín and Lauren, extended family and many friends  we extend our deepest sympathy.

We also extend our deepest sympathy to Maureen’s children Eva and Jarlath, and the extended Maguire and Conlon families.

Another National Training Course in Lanesboro

At Lanesboro’s Fire and Rescue Service station a National Training Course is currently taking place for this week. The course has participants from several counties and a number of from county Longford Fire Service. The course has also four instructors.

It is a great boost for the local economy having people travelling countrywide to Lanesboro to take part in courses. It is particularly exciting to know that we have in the community a centre that is capable of hosting national courses.

Currently there are vacancies for Fire and rescue personnel to become part of the Lanesboro station. It is a wonderful opportunity to become a valuable member of the local service. Members meet and mingle with people from all over the country on these courses and this is an ideal opportunity meet and become friends with fire service members from all over the country. View the Longford County Council website and make your application to www.hrrecruitment@longfordcoco.ie

Recently we had the Defence Forces using the Power Station for training on two occasions and I believe that the Defence Forces are keen to avail of the power station building again for further training in the future.

For courses and training as well as visitor numbers on the increase the popularity of our Lanesboro and Ballyleague community is continually growing and there is a great need to see an increase in accommodation and as well as guesthouse and B&B added capacity there is a need for a boutique hotel and a location to hold functions. With all this attraction of people to Lanesboro this is an ideal opportunity for entrepreneurs to avail of the gaps that currently exists in the market.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Áine and Micheál O’Sullivan and their family, Lehery, on the death of Áine’s mother Mrs Maureen Murray, Monaghan Town on Thursday last.

Roscommon Community Challenge 2026

The annual Roscommon Community Challenge will take place this year on Friday night 6th March with a moonlight 5k and 8k trip around the beautiful surrounds of Roscommon Town.

Every year more and more people from the Lanesboro and Ballyleague community are participating and this year it is hoped that there will be many more.

Unique and Historic Victory

On Thursday last a very unique game took place in Clonbonny. Both the Senior and Junior teams had qualified for the Roscommon ‘B’ Shield Championship finals. Ironically, both the Elphin Community College teams had also qualified. With dates for fixtures running out a very unique compromise was reached and it was agreed to play the Junior final over the first half of the game with the leaders at half time winning the title and the second half would be the senior final, again, with leaders at the final 30 minute be crowned senior winners.

As it turned our both the Lanesboro Community Colleges teams were ahead at the whistles and were awarded the Senior and Junior Championships. Well done to all the panels and their management team on such a unique and historic achievement. See attachment

Like Father like Son

Belvedere College in the heart of Dublin city is renowned for its prowess on the rugby pitch but last week the mould was broken when the first year Gaelic football team won the Tom Quinlan Cup First Year Division 1 schools in Dublin when they overcame Malahide Community College in the final. Former local man and Rathcline player Odie Lawlor is a member of the staff at Belvedere College and his son Oisín was a member of the winning team. His proud grandparents John and Una, Rathcline, are basking in the glory of Oisín success. See attachment

The Joker

So far nobody was turned over the Joker in the card cut in the St. Faithleachs GAA club fundraiser and Saturday night saw a jackpot for €2,300 go unclaimed. The jackpot rises to €2,400 for Saturday night next where the odds of turning the Joker is now one in 50. Go along; enjoy a great night of fun and craic in the clubhouse and be in with a chance to win the €2,400 jackpot. Saturday night winners in the draw were Ann Galvin and Michelle Brehon who both won €100.

Be part of the Fire Service team

Recently we saw a number of high profile, tragic and critical accidents occurring both north and south of the border we have seen the essential and critical need of first responders of the fire service and the wonderful and vital work that they do.

Being first on the scene, the training that the Fire Brigade members receive, teaches them to respond and deal with the tragedies unfolding as well as stabilising those that are in need of help until the medical services arrive.

The training the fire service team receives covers a wide range of emergencies, including fires, road traffic collisions, floods, and incidents involving hazardous materials. They are also involved in rescue operations, such as water rescue, general rescue, and extrications from vehicles. Beyond emergencies, fire services work in prevention, community education, and can act as first responders for medical situations.

Long gone are the days of just putting out fires and the training received shows that the training is for all eventualities.

Working on the local fire brigade service is not just something taken lightly by the local team; it is a commitment by all its members to our local community and they give up their valuable time to be at the ready to help any one of us in our hour of need. The local team is one of remarkable comradery with people from all walks of life giving of their time for us in their catchment area.

At present there are a few vacancies for men or women at the Lanesboro Fire Service and if you feel you would like to be part of this remarkable team you should apply at www.hrrecruitment@longfordcoco.ie

There are a few requirements in relation to response time but it should be no problem for those in the Lanesboro, Ballyleague, east Killashee and Derryhaun, Cloontagh area. For the younger generation there is a great trend for them to be in the gym and this physical fitness regime makes them ideal candidates to become members of the fire service.

Full and intensive training will be given to the successful applicants and even though this is a part-time job the remuneration is excellent with excellent opportunities for advancement to other opportunities.
