Reunion of Class of 40 years ago
Were you one of the girls that began secondary school in September 1969 and on 22nd June 1974 finished their Leaving Certificate in the local Convent of Mercy, Secondary School in Lanesboro? It is hoped to have a reunion to get together to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that momentous occasion. Death
The death took place suddenly at his residence in Knocknacarra, Galway on Saturday 11th January of Seamus Farrell. Seamus was born and reared at his family home in Gurteengar before moving to Galway in later life. His remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday last. Following his Funeral Mass on Thursday he was laid to rest alongside his parents in Rathcline Cemetery. To his daughters Louise and Elizabeth, sons Johnathon and Darren, relatives and friends we extend out deepest sympathy.
Improve your English Language skills
Free English language classes for non-native speakers will take place in Lanesboro Library every Tuesday evening from 7.00 p.m. – 9.p.m. Classes will start on Tuesday, February 4th and finish on Tuesday, March 11th. Boro Celtic go down by odd goal in three
On a pleasant dry Saturday afternoon Boro travelled to Longford to take on Camlin Utd. in a league game. In a very competitive first half both teams were limited to chances and Boro came close a couple of times without converting. Henry Kenny shot marginally wide from a free kick before Boro failed to hit the target when David Rooney found Daragh Hussey in the 6 yard box only for the shot to go over. The first half finished scoreless. The home team came out strong in the second half and scored twice in 20 minutes. Boro regrouped and began to apply pressure later in the half grabbing a goal through Aiden Dooney. The game finished with Boro pushing for the equaliser but the clock was against them. The final score was 2-1 to the home side.
Open Evening Wednesday 22nd January
On Wednesday 22nd January at Lanesboro Community college the school will host their Open day and evening.10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: All 5th and 6th classes from the local National Schools will attend an open morning in the school. They will experience a taste of secondary school life, visit all the different departments, meet teachers and pupils, and begin to think of which subjects they will choose from the 18 currently on offer right through Junior Cert to Leaving Cert, all to Higher Level.
7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. All parents are invited to meet the teaching staff, discuss subject choices, take a tour of the school, and make any enquiry they may feel is relevant. The Principal’s address will take place at 7 p.m. sharp. Tea will be served.
A Talk on the Wildlife of Lough Ree
The Irish Wildlife Trust Longford branch is organising a presentation on the Wildlife of Lough Ree in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Tuesday evening 28th January at 8pm. Mark Craven will give a video presentation of the animals and birdlife he recorded in and around in the area of Lough Ree.
It promises to be a fascination evening and it is one that nobody should miss as it will increase the knowledge base of all the wildlife in and around our area.
In 2007 white tailed eagles were reintroduced to Ireland and last July the first Irish born chicks were born on Lough Derg. One of the remarkable scenes that will be shown on the night will be a close up video presentation of Lough Ree’s White Tailed Eagle. Mark will also show starlings settling to roost in the reeds among many other scenes.
This is an evening of sheer beauty for all the family and one not to be missed either by young or old.

Dogs soiling our Streets
Once again it has been brought to my attention of the amount of dog soiling on the Main Street and the walkways around the area. Again, we ask everyone that walk dogs in the vicinity to bring along with them some method of cleaning after their dog soils the walkways of others. We ask you to be very conscious and to be civic minded. Pooper scoopers are available FREE OF CHARGE in O’Brien’s shop; just drop in and pick one up as you are walking by the shop.
Fair Day
The Annual General Meeting of the fair Day committee too place recently. There was great enthusiasm about the Fair Day that will take place this year on Saturday 1st March. The fair will again return to the street between Adie’s and the church. The committee looks forward to this year’s fair being even bigger and better than anything gone before.
Break In
On Saturday evening last two houses in the Green were broken into and an attempt was made on a third house. Numbers 50 whose occupant is Mick Tracey and 51 whose occupant is Mike Greene were broken into between 5pm and 7.30pm. There was a sum of money taken from one of the houses. An attempt to break into number 49, which is presently unoccupied, was also made but the thieves either were not able to gain entry or were disturbed.
If you happened to be in the Green area on Saturday evening and seen anything that created a suspicion with you please call to Lanesboro Garda Station 3321102 or Longford Garda Station 3350570.
It is very important that we are all vigilant and report anything at all that we think is out of the ordinary. Thieves and thieving should always be immediately reported to help ensure that our area is free of people that perpetrate dastardly acts in our community. If you see or know anything please do report it.
Rathcline Ladies
The presentation to our U16 girls took place at a presentation evening in the clubhouse in Clonbonny on Saturday evening last. County player and local lady Claire Greene was guest of honour and did the honours in presenting the medals to the girls. The club would like to thank Gerard Farrell for supplying the food for the evening.
The clothes collection is still ongoing and if you need clothes collected you can contact Mike Greene or Madaleine and they will arrange collection or drop off. There must be some clothes in each house that has been replaced with Christmas presents and by donating them to the club it will help make a great difference.
The club will field for the first time 5 teams in the ladies competitions- they will field at U12, U14, U16, minor and senior. If you feel you can give a hand you are very welcome, also, if you want to be part of a developing club either as a player or coach come along and be part of something great in Ladies football. Please contact Mike or Madaleine to register your interest. Be proud to be part of a great club.

Draw on Saturday night next
The Rathcline GAA club annual New Year draw will take place on Saturday 25th January. Traditionally the funds collected from this draw go towards insuring the club for the coming year and will also pay for registration of members and players along with the entry fees to all competitions.
This year there is a great need for a hugely successful draw to keep the repayments on the clubhouse and grounds up to date. With a new executive in place for the coming year they need your support to help ease their way into the running of the club for the coming year and supporting the draw will make the start a great one.
There is no need for me to stress further but this draw is hugely important to the club and they would ask absolutely everyone to support by buying tickets and also encouraging others to buy. Tickets are priced at only €10 and the prize structure is – 1st €1500, 2nd €750, 3rd €500, 4th €250, 5th €200, 6th €200, 7th €200 and 8th €200.
The draw will take place in the Swan Tavern on Friday night 25th January at 11am. Tickets are available locally or from O’Brien’s.
Shannon Gaels
The club will hold its registration night on Friday night 7th February. The club has agreed that the registration for the coming year will be; €30 for single player and €45 two or more children or family.
Rathcline GAA Lotto
The numbers drawn in the lottery on Saturday night 20th January were 4, 5, 13, 21, 29 and 37. There were 2 jackpot winners of the lottery and they shared the jackpot of €800. Timmy Nolan, Fermoyle and Kathleen Smith, Lisduff, Longford both receive €400. The jackpot will now revert to €100 for next week’s draw.
Ronan Mc Cormack Rosactive Weekend
Last year was the first year remembering the passing of Ronan Mc Cormack Charity Challenge with a variety of events to raise money for a number of charities. The response was thoroughly phenomenal and the event will again take place this year on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March.
Ronan was a local lad, a larger than life character with a great attitude to life and his passing deprived us all of many happy days in his company. This is a wonderful way to acknowledge and celebrate his life and we should all support in whatever way we can be involved during the weekend. The entire weekend is in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation and Roscommon Special Olympics.
Saturday will commence with the 100km cycle from Roscommon to Mountbellew and back again to Roscommon. Alternatively you can cycle the 100km from Carnmore in County Galway to Mountbellew and back again to Carnmore. The cyclist will meet up in Mountbellew before returning to their original starting point. To register for the cycle it is €30 the 5km is €15 or the cycle and 5km €40.
On Saturday night there will be a Social Nigh t in Foxe’s bar which will include a Dart competition – the fund of which will go to Special Olympics Roscommon.
On Sunday 2nd the day’s events will commence at 10am with Invacare Series Elite Paracycycle Criterium featuring Ireland’s Elite Paracyclists – sign in 8.45 to 9.30am.
At 11am “Taking the Dis” a 2km Push, Cycle or Roll to showcase the talents of people with different abilities – sign in from 9 to 10am.
12 noon will see the commencement of the 5km Sub 30 Run – a close circuit road race – sign in 10 to 11.30am.
At 12.30 5km Lappers Challenge a Fun Run or Push around the streets of Roscommon Town – sign in from 10.30 to 12noon.
Pike Angling AGM
Lanesboro Pike Angling club will hold their AGM on this Wednesday night 22nd January at 8pm in the Yacht Bar Lanesboro. On the agenda will be – chairman’s address, secretary’s report, treasurers report and the election of the committee.

Cheque for €2250 for GOAL
On Wednesday last Lanesboro Community College made a presentation of a cheque totalling €2250 to a representative of the well-known charity Goal. The cheque was presented on behalf of the school by Ms Ailbhe Sheehan, who produced the show’ Fundraising for the Philippians’. Thanks to all the hard work put in by the school community and to the generosity of the people of our community, the money raised is on its way to make a real difference to those who are most in need. The school is very proud of what they have achieved and hope that the money that was raised will make a real difference to the people of the Philippians.

U16 Community Games Chess
Hard luck to the U16 team who were unfortunate not to advance onto the next stage of the competition having drawn with their opponents on the night. Thanks to all those who got involved and for all the parental support which was much appreciated!
Roscommon Hospital Urgent Care Centre
Since the closing of the A&E at our local Roscommon County Hospital there has been some confusion as to what now happens at the hospital. The Urgent Care Centre (minor injuries unit) formerly the A&E is open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm. The Urgent Care Centre is staffed by a team led by a Consultant in Emergency Medicine, including doctors, clinical nurse managers, staff nurses, radiographers, physiotherapists, clerical and support staff.
The Urgent Care Centre treats the following injuries in adults and children of 5 years and over:- Suspected broken bones to legs (from knees to toes), Suspected broken bones to arms (from collar bone to finger tips), All sprains and strains, Facial injuries (including nasal and oral injuries), Minor burns and scalds, Wounds, bites, cuts, grazes and scalp lacerations, Splinters and fish hooks, Small abscesses and boils, Foreign bodies in eyes, ears and nose, Minor chest injuries, Minor head injuries (fully conscious patients, who did not experience loss of consciousness or vomit after the head injury, Road traffic accidents – delayed presentations only, Changes of Indwelling Urinary Catheter (adults only), Peg tubes re-insertion (adults only) and Dislocated shoulders (adults only).
The following injuries or conditions CANNOT be treated at the Urgent Care Centre: – Children under the age of 5 years, Injuries following a fall from a height, Road traffic accident, Serious head injuries, Chest pain, Abdominal pain, Gynaecological problems, Serious back or neck pain, Pregnancy related conditions and Pelvis or hip fractures.
If you have a medial card, are a patient with a valid medical/GP referral letter, are on a Review appointment there is no charge. For non-medical card holders there is a current charge of €100 and Non-EU short term visitors the charge is €200.
Tony Mulligan’s Huge Challenge
Tony Mulligan is about to put himself through a torturous challenge in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital on Sunday 2nd February and he seeks your support for his chosen charity. HELL & BACK challenge is specifically designed and created by outdoor specialists to test your physical and mental boundaries to THE limit! This is not a multi-sport event – it is a running event through, over and under various different types of terrain, including the Little Sugar Loaf Mountain, The Pond, The River, Satan’s Pit and The Swamp.
And if that wasn’t enough, you must also scale 7 foot walls, crawl under barbed wire and run through Shock of Horrors where you will get a nice little electric shock!
Sponsorship cards are in shops and businesses throughout the town and you are asked to be generous towards Tony and Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

Another Award for Shauna.
Following on from her tremendous success at last year’s Young Scientist competition Shauna O’Neill, daughter of James and Margaret O’Neill, Cloontuskert scooped third place in the senior individual category of this year’s competition. Shauna represented her school Scoil Muire gan Smal in Roscommon with her project entitled, an extended investigation into the effect of static magnetic fields of molecular properties of water and its consequences for water in protein cavities. This award is further recognition of the caliber of Shauna and the bright future she has in front of her.

Social Dancing
Social Dancing Classes with Eamonn Cunniss starting in the Chestnut Tree Killashee on Sunday 26th January from 5.30pm to 7.30pm for six weeks. Waltz, Jive, Quick Step, Shoe the donkey, Stack of Barley and a spot of line dancing. Any dance you want, he’s got it.
Lanesboro Community Games
Lanesboro Community Games has got off to a great start with U10 draughts, U12 and U16 chess and U 15 Badminton. Well done to the draughts team (Kieran and Cormac O Dowd, Sam Murphy, Alice Johnston, Daire Cox and Luke Dowd) for getting to the 2nd round of their competition on their first ever outing.
They were narrowly beaten by Dromard and are already looking forward to next year’s attempt. Meanwhile U 12 chess team, Dylan and Laoise Hanly, Duileach Ryan, Conor Sorohan, Orla Lyons and Cormac Casey beat Kenagh and have progressed to Round 2 against Mostrim. The U16 team played against Ballymahon Forgney and conceded defeat after a very close contest. Similarly our badminton team, Brian Casey, Ronan English, Sean Maguire and Cronan Flood, was narrowly beaten in the first round but had a very enjoyable day out.
The soccer teams are now in training and the U 10 handwriting and Art for all age groups will be held in the co-op hall on Sat 1st February from 4pm to 6 pm.
Shannon Gaels
The following is the training schedule presently in operation within the club – U12’s will train at the Community College every Friday evening from 7 to 7.45pm, the U14’s will train also on Friday night from 7.45 to 8.30pm. The minors will train every Monday night from 7 to 8pm in the Co-Op and also on Saturdays.
Padraig Shanley has been ratified as trainer of the U16 panel for the coming year.
Parents are encouraged to ensure that all young players are at training and present 15min before training. A big effort is being made to ensure that all our young players get the best of training and managing and we ask parents to also play their part.
Best wishes to Cillian Flood, Eanna Mc Grath, Ronan English, Oran Kenny, Cian Gilmore, Cronan Flood, Eanna Donoghoe and Loughlin Healy, all part of the Ballymahon Convent U14 team that embark on their Leinster campaign this week. We also wish Óisín O’Sullivan and Shane Kenny the very best with Ballymahon Convent seniors also playing in Leinster this week.
The minor club wishes Joe Rooney and his team management the very best for the coming year following their appointment and ratification last week.

FBD Connacht League Final: Best of luck to Ciarán and Diarmuid Murtagh with the Roscommon County senior panel in the FBD Connacht League Final against Leitrim, this coming Sunday, 26th January at 2.00pm in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Membership/Registration: 2014 Player registration and club membership is now due. The fees for the coming years are adult players €60, U18 players and students €30, family membership €100, social membership €30. The Club Executive ratified the Intermediate team management for the year. Manager – Joe Rooney, selectors – Anthony Farrell and Cathal Chapman and trainer – Kieran Feeney.
Ladies Club: The U 16 medal presentation took place in Clonbonny on Saturday evening. A very well attended evening saw the brilliant U 16 squad receive their medals from Rathcline and County Longford footballer Claire Greene. Thanks to all who contributed to the great array of food in the clubhouse, including Adie’s and the home made cakes and buns from Ladies involved in the club. Madeline, Mike and the senior ladies had the clubhouse looking very well. It was wonderful to see all the parents there as their children put in a serious effort throughout the year. There is a good sense of community around this club and the year was made memorable from support from parents, relatives, and friends. A tough year was capped by a one point win over Carrickedmond in the final, and those memories will last for a long time. Thanks to the management, the behind the scenes work by Madeline, Mike and Paddy, parents who helped on the line, especially Ann Bannon!! and all those who contributed to the year. But again thanks to the players who worked so hard on the training pitch and brought silverware back to the U 16 level.
