Open Day at Community College
Just a word of thanks to all those who came up and had a look around our school on the occasion of our open day, Wednesday the 22nd of January. We are very proud of our school and are delighted to be able to show it off to those living in our own locality. We are a community college so our links with the people of this area really do matter to us. From fundraising for the less fortunate to visiting local nursing homes, from raising awareness on local environmental issues to working with the ISPCA, our students are getting the chance to develop a strong sense of loyalty and belonging to this community and to make their very own contribution. Many people have links to the school and it is wonderful to hear all the stories from the last 50 years. Hard to believe it is nearly 25 years ago now since the Vocational school or ‘Tech’ as it was known, amalgamated with the Convent secondary school to become Lanesboro Community College. So much has changed since those days, and we are not just talking about the new buildings, renovations and continuous upgrades. Education is now for life and everyone goes to 3rd level. Our students successfully compete and win top awards at national competitions and events and our past pupils are on the faculties and boardrooms of some of the country’s most prestigious institutions. So of course we are proud and delighted when we get the chance to show you around …and invite you to be part of a school which has the community at its heart.
Support for Cuban Mission
Newtowncashel native Fr. Tom Kearney has spent many years on the Cuban Mission. Fr. Tom has many projects as part of his mission and your support for this Social on this Friday night 31st January will help greatly in supporting his great work. He has connections to our parish and we hope that there will be a great turnout from both parishes to support Fr Tom and his great work. Let all roads lead to the Peer Inn in Lisnacusha for a wonderful night. Music will be supplied by the Casey and admission is optional.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The results of the competition held on Wednesday night last 22nd January are; N/S 1st Gemma Douglas and Elish Gray, 2nd Bernadette Gillen and Mona O’Flaherty and 3rd Frances and Frank Brennan. E/W 1st Eileen Kelly and Una Clarke, 2nd Brid Mc Dermott and Una Lawlor and 3rd Mike Flynn and Brendan Dowling.
Club members are reminded that our Pairs Competition commences on Wednesday next 29th January and ends on Wednesday 5th February. Members should pay their full fee this week.
Rathcline GAA Lotto
The numbers drawn in the lottery on Saturday night 27th January were 1, 4, 10, 20, 30 and 45. There was no winner of the lottery jackpot of €100. The four winners of the €25 prizes are Aidan and Mary Ganly, London, Frank Kiernan, Killoe, Kevin Diffley, Ballymahon and Brigid Mullooly, Lehery.
Ballyleague N.S. Enrolment Day
Parents of new entrants who wish to enrol their children for September 2014 are invited to visit the school on Friday February 7th from 2p.m. to 3p.m. If this date/time is unsuitable please contact the school at 043-3321906 to make alternative arrangements. Please bring along a copy of your child’s birth certificate. We look forward to meeting you on the day.
Ben wins the €1500
Congratulations to Ben Mc Nelis, Ardara, Donegal on winning the Rathcline GAA New Year draw that was held in Adie’s Bar on Saturday night last. Ben is son of Dominick and Catherine (O’Sullivan) and grandson of Hilary and Vera O’Sullivan. Second prize €750 went to Dan Mc Gann, Killashee; third prize €500 was won by Alan Skelly, Aughamore; fourth prize €250, Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Lehery, 5th prize of €200 was won by Oonagh Taylor, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, 6th prize €200 went to M&E Hanley, Cashelbeg, 7th prize €200 went to Matthew Clancy, Roscommon and the final prize of €200 was won by the Horohoes, Lanesboro.
Reunion of Class of 40 years ago
Were you one of the girls that began secondary school in September 1969 and on 22nd June 1974 finished their Leaving Certificate in the local Convent of Mercy, Secondary School in Lanesboro? It is hoped to have a reunion to get together to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that momentous occasion. Improve your English Language skills
Free English language classes for non-native speakers will take place in Lanesboro Library every Tuesday evening from 7.00 p.m. – 9.p.m. Classes will start on Tuesday, February 4th and finish on Tuesday, March 11th. Lanesboro Community Games
Art and Handwriting competitions will be held in the Co-Op Hall on Saturday 1st February from 4pm to 6pm. U 10 Handwriting is for contestants who will be over 8 yrs. and under 10 years of age on 1st August 2014. The Art competition is for all ages from U8 (Over 6) to U16. Contestants are asked to bring their own art materials – paper will be provided. Admission €3 (unless already registered).
Soccer
Well done to the U10 boys’ soccer team who had a great game on Friday night but unfortunately will not progress in the competition. Thanks to their manager Padraig O’Dowd. The U 13 boys are delighted to be through to their next round with their manager, Tina Dowd.
Chess
Our U 12 Chess team were runners up in the Chess County Finals, held in Killoe on Saturday last. Although determined and well prepared, they lost out to a very strong Ardagh team who will now represent the county in Leinster. A huge thank you to Teresa Ryan for her organisation of this competition and for her training of the team.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mary and Eugene Kelly and family on the death of Mary’s aunt and the extended Flanagan family on the death of Mrs Kathleen Wallis nee Flanagan formerly Lisnacusha who died in England recently.
Keep Local Cemeteries Clean
With three local cemeteries in the parish of Rathcline and two in the parish of Kilgefin there a great onus on everyone to ensure that when they are doing work at their family plot that they remove all and leave the cemetery spic and span.
I have been asked to mention this as there has been some work done at Lanesboro cemetery and the excess has been placed at the back of the cemetery. Hopefully this was left there temporarily. The committee would appreciate if all the materials were removed sooner rather than later.
Rathcline Ladies
Presentation – The presentation of the Intermediate medals to the victorious team will take place on Saturday night next Peer Inn. The function will commence at 10pm with the presentation of medals at 11pm. It is hoped that there will be a bumper attendance in the Peer for what promises to be a wonderful night. Admission to the function is €5.
Our under 18 players are reminded of county minor training every Tuesday night at 8pm. The club is proud to have representation at county level and we look to them representing us and the county following their training.
The clothes collection is continuing and if you contact Mike or Madaleine to arrange drop off or collection.
Active Age Group
Following their break the Ballyleague Lanesboro Active Age group has recommenced their activities in St. Mary’s Parish hall every Tuesday afternoon at 2pm. The group welcome new members to their meetings and activities.
Lanesboro Tri Club
Open Evening: Lanesboro Tri Club held a very successful Open Evening on Saturday 18thJanuary in the clubrooms. Current members came out in force to welcome newbies to the club while also sharing their experiences of triathlon. The club wishes to express a big welcome to the new junior and senior members who signed up on the night. Best of luck with future training! A huge thanks to all who helped out.

Congratulations to Brid Gordon: Big congrats to our very own club member Brid Gordon who won the Irish Runner Magazine’s competition sponsored by Base2Race. Brid was the lucky winner of a full triathlon starter kit, which includes a bike, wetsuit and much more. Brid came to our Open Evening last year and signed up with the intention of one day doing her first triathlon. She is well on the way to achieving this and can now do so in style with all her new gear. It is so well deserved. Big congrats!

Vo2 Testing: Two days of Vo2 Max testing took place over the weekend with members being tested by a Cardio Coach from My Health Matters to measure their ability to transport oxygen from the air and deliver it to the working muscles, in order to maximize training. It provided each member with a detailed breakdown of his or her unique fitness profile and also gave the information needed to reach the next level of training. Some members also availed of bike testing.
Big Heart Fun Run in aid of Croí: On Saturday January 25th members of the club headed to Mote Park to take part in the annual 5 mile fun run in aid of Croí. Well done to all.

The club will hold its registration night on Friday night 7th February. The club has agreed that the registration for the coming year will be; €30 for single player and €45 two or more children or family.
Ronan Mc Cormack Rosactive Weekend
Last year was the first year remembering the passing of Ronan Mc Cormack Charity Challenge with a variety of events to raise money for a number of charities. The response was thoroughly phenomenal and the event will again take place this year on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March.
Ronan was a local lad, a larger than life character with a great attitude to life and his passing deprived us all of many happy days in his company. This is a wonderful way to acknowledge and celebrate his life and we should all support in whatever way we can be involved during the weekend. The entire weekend is in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation and Roscommon Special Olympics.
Saturday will commence with the 100km cycle from Roscommon to Mountbellew and back again to Roscommon. Alternatively you can cycle the 100km from Carnmore in County Galway to Mountbellew and back again to Carnmore. The cyclist will meet up in Mountbellew before returning to their original starting point. To register for the cycle it is €30 the 5km is €15 or the cycle and 5km €40.
On Saturday night there will be a Social Nigh t in Foxe’s bar which will include a Dart competition – the fund of which will go to Special Olympics Roscommon.
On Sunday 2nd the day’s events will commence at 10am with Invacare Series Elite Paracycycle Criterium featuring Ireland’s Elite Paracyclists – sign in 8.45 to 9.30am.
At 11am “Taking the Dis” a 2km Push, Cycle or Roll to showcase the talents of people with different abilities – sign in from 9 to 10am.
12 noon will see the commencement of the 5km Sub 30 Run – a close circuit road race – sign in 10 to 11.30am.
At 12.30 5km Lappers Challenge a Fun Run or Push around the streets of Roscommon Town – sign in from 10.30 to 12noon.
Tony Mulligan’s Huge Challenge
Tony Mulligan is about to put himself through a torturous challenge in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital on Sunday 2nd February and he seeks your support for his chosen charity. HELL & BACK challenge is specifically designed and created by outdoor specialists to test your physical and mental boundaries to the limit! This is not a multi-sport event – it is a running event through, over and under various different types of terrain, including the Little Sugar Loaf Mountain, The Pond, The River, Satan’s Pit and The Swamp.
And if that wasn’t enough, you must also scale 7 foot walls, crawl under barbed wire and run through Shock of Horrors where you will get a nice little electric shock!
Sponsorship cards are in shops and businesses throughout the town and you are asked to be generous towards Tony and Temple Street Children’s Hospital.
Shannon Gaels
The following is the training schedule presently in operation within the club – U12’s will train at the Community College every Friday evening from 7 to 7.45pm, the U14’s will train also on Friday night from 7.45 to 8.30pm. The minors will train every Monday night from 7 to 8pm in the Co-Op and also on Saturdays.
Padraig Shanley has been ratified as trainer of the U16 panel for the coming year.
Parents are encouraged to ensure that all young players are at training and present 15min before training. A big effort is being made to ensure that all our young players get the best of training and managing and we ask parents to also play their part.

St. Faithleach’s GAA
Membership/Registration: 2014 player registration and club membership is now due.
