On Monday last in the Irish Times I read an article relating to the proposed MetroLink in Dublin and its costing. The new 18.8km MetroLink running from Swords to Charlemont was originally estimated to cost between €7.16 and €12.25 billion and it will serve 16 stations on its way. In the Times on Monday last the new figure for the build was estimated to be now in the region of €19 billion. The decision on its approval will be made by the cabinet in the near future.
Reading the article brought to mind the recent opening of the new Metro Tunnel in Melbourne, Australia. The official opening took place on 1st February with the underground tunnel; twin tracked, extending to 9km and the building of 5 new stations on the line. The cost of the completed work came in at 15 billion Australian dollars – that would equate to €9.14 billion. Planning began in 2015 with work commencing in 2017 and the completed project was put into use in late 2025.
The Metro Trains Melbourne has a local man its Chief Executive Officer and he is a frequent visitor back to his hometown. Raymond O’Flaherty, son of Mona and the late Tony O’Flaherty, Ballyleague and formerly Main St., has been leading the company and its over 7,000 workers since 2018 where he has managed this incredible expansion. On a recent trip home Raymond was telling me that he is looking forward to the development of the new link to Melbourne airport in the near future. Raymond keeps up to date in all the local news as he reads the Lanesboro Ballyleague notes weekly. On his trips home he enjoys strolling through the town meeting and chatting locals and visiting his mother and his sisters Geraldine and Monica.
Congratulations to Raymond on leading such an accomplishment and the very best of luck for many more successes to in the future.
Does the Future for Rural Ireland health services depend on us?
As you have read in these notes and most likely heard in many conversations with local people about the lack of local treatment in our community by the doctor that recently was awarded the HSE contract for a the clinic in Lanesboro.
Dr. David Booth was awarded the contract for the Lanesboro Medical Centre and since then the doctor’s attendance at the clinic has been haphazard to say the least. Last week I reported that the Lanesboro clinic was temporarily closed and if you wanted to be treated you had to go to Longford to his clinic there.
If there is not an uprising from the entire people of the community it will be a shame.
This is the litmus test not just for Lanesboro and Ballyleague but for the entire rural community of Ireland as if this behaviour is allowed to happen in our community by the HSE then there will be no treatment centre in towns and villages countrywide and everyone will have to go to the bigger towns. The HSE hierarchy has to be made aware of the lack of treatment in Lanesboro and they must act immediately to ensure that everybody in rural communities have availability to treatment centres in their own rural community.
A determined stand has to be made by everyone whether they are patients of that surgery or not to ensure that the communities of Lanesboro, Ballyleague and surrounding communities are not to be left high and dry.
At present a petition is available to be signed in all local shops and we encourage everybody to sign it.
The following is the wording of the petition ‘This service has been an essential part of our village life for the past 23 years. It is crucial that this service remains in Lanesboro. It is vital for the wellbeing of our vulnerable and ageing population who need to know they can get timely appointments and to know there is a doctor available in case of emergencies’.
Death of former local
On Friday 24th July we learned of the death at Woodlawn Manor Nursing Home, Malahide, Co. Dublin of former local resident Philomena (Phyllis) McBride. Phyllis formerly Reilly, Barnacor, moved away to work in England in her younger years before returning to live and work in Dublin a time later. She was a lady that always had a great affinity to Lanesboro and some years ago foresaw a time ahead and her passing by buying her own plot in Clonbonny cemetery.
Phyllis reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home on Sunday 26th and following her Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church she was laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery. Phyllis was predeceased by her son Gerard, her sisters Kitty and Nancy, her brothers Joe and John. She is survived by her daughters Caroline and Shannon, her sister Beatrice Collins (nee Reilly), and her brother in law Peadar, their family Michelle, Denise, and Noel Collins, her grandchildren Josh and Tara, relatives and friends to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
Mayo share goodwill in Temple Street
As we know the tradition for All-Ireland winning teams is that the Monday following their victory is to visit the children’s hospitals in either Crumlin or Temple Street.
On the Monday following Mayo’s fabulous victory over Kerry they went to visit the sick children in Temple Street in inner city Dublin. This is a major logistical operation and facilitating the smooth running of the event was none other than Odie Lawlor. Odie, son of Una and the late John Lawlor, Rathcline, is head of Operations and Human Resources at the nearby Belvedere College and his background and experience in hospitality made him the ideal man for this operation. Well done Odie.

Joy Unbounded
Last week we wished Ellen Irwin and her Roscommon teammates the very best of luck in the All-Ireland Intermediate Final in Croke Park on Sunday.
To win in Croke Park any day is a thrill but to win on All-Ireland Final day is the stuff of dreams and Roscommon produced the game of their season on this the most important day of the year.
Leading the attack at number 11 was local Cloonadra lady Ellen Irwin and what a performance Ellen put in in aiding her team to this marvellous victory. They finished on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-6 and celebrations took place long into a wonderful night for the ladies and all their supporters.
Congratulation Ellen, your teammates and management on a fabulous victory and we would like to wish them the very best for 2027 when they will be performing at senior level. It was also a fabulous day for Ellen’s parents, her sister Orla, her brother Jack, her St. Faithleach’s club, parish and entire community who share in this wonderful success. We are really anticipating next year’s Connaught Championship when Roscommon the Intermediate champions will meet Senior All-Ireland Champions Galway – already a mouth-watering fixture.

Championship Updates
To continue the red lettered Sunday for the St. Faithleach’s club the opening round of the Senior Championship saw them pitted against Castlerea St. Kevin’s in the club grounds. The game was expected to be a tight and tough game but in the end St. Faithleach’s finished a mighty day with a wonderful victory on a scoreline of 3-14 to 1.09.
Rathcline, following their free weekend are back in action on Sunday next 9th August where they will travel to Oliver Lynch Park, Abbeylara to play Dromard at 2pm.
Women’s Choir
Roscommon Women’s Choir ‘Cór Comáin’ wants to invite you to experience singing in harmony and to join the choir.
They will hold an Open Day on Thursday 3rd September and they would like to invite you to go along and be part of a very exciting day.

Solstice Choir in Backstage Theatre.
Following on from their huge success in the Roscommon Arts Centre the Roscommon Solstice Choir will present “Songs that Built a Nation” in the Backstage Theatre Longford on Wednesday and Thursday, 9th and 10th September.
With a script by well-known Roscommon Playwright and Historian Tommy Murray the choir will present “Epic moments of Irish History as told in Ballads, Songs, Poems and Music”. Beginning with the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798 the show tells the story of this traumatic and tumultuous time in our history up to and including the War of Independence 1920/21.
This show which has been described as “a very moving production, which immediately takes its place as one of the outstanding highlights of this choir’s distinguished ‘body of work’ is definitely not to be missed.

Echoes of BnM and ESB: The Grand Lanesboro & Ballyleague Reunion
We are endeavouring to make a magical trip down memory lane for all the families that came to Lanesboro and Ballyleague communities when they came to work with Bord na Mona and ESB since the mid 1950’s. We are remembering their parents and all the families that grew up going to school in the all the schools around the three housing estates of The Green, Cloontuskert and Derryhaun. We are also remembering all the families that came to work from all the surrounding parishes. There were also a number of years of apprentices that came to Lanesboro Vocational School now Lanesboro Community College and the committee would love to welcome them back too.
To help with the reconnection of everyone we would like that everyone that reads these notes and that have connections to anyone that comes from the above mentioned families that they would pass the word around of a giant gathering in Lanesboro on Saturday 26th September where we will all reconnect with Bord na Mona and ESB.
It is fitting and a right time to do this as the power station has been closed for seven years now and the Bord na Mona works is rapidly come to its life end and we should all celebrate what both companies and the people that it brought to work here and bring families and former workers back to the community that they made so great.
The organising group is asking you to share the news with old school friends, send vintage photos with names to lanesbororeconnection@gmail.com or drop physical copies into O’Brien’s. It would be made all the better if you could include names of the people in the photographs. Rathcline 50/50 Draw
The draw for the club 50/50 draw took place on Monday night last 26th July was for a pool that amounted to €699. The winning ticket was in the name of Padraig and Ger Dooney, Lough Ree Park. As usual the winning cheque will be left in O’Brien’s for collection and can be usually collected on Wednesday evenings.
The Rathcline 50/50 draw takes place every Monday night in one of our local bars at 7.30pm. Your continued generous support is keeping the pool at a wonderfully high figure and it is greatly appreciated as it is making a great difference to the winner each week.
National Heritage Week
As previously mentioned in these notes The Shannonside Heritage Society will be holding a photographic exhibition to coincide with Irish Heritage week, which this year runs from the 15th-23rd August.
The theme this year is ‘Heritage at Risk’ and the exhibition will be held in St Mary’s hall.
We are looking in particular for any old photographs relating to: Bord na Mona, varies versions the Power Station, any domestic bog workings – cutting, harvesting, footing etc., any other photographs relative to other industrial works such as the Quarry, Tomato Farm, Windmill etc. etc.
Also, photographs of any lost buildings, buildings that have changed their use over the years, i.e. shops, pubs, hotels and any photographs of land and areas prior to development.
We are particularly keen to have any pictures that might show the river as a working environment, including any photos of the river banks packed with fishermen and boats as was often the case.
If you have any such photographs that you think will fit nicely with our exhibition then we would ask you to please:
Mark the back of the photograph with your name and phone number so that we can return them to you.
Leave them in an envelope with O’Brien’s Corner Shop marked for the attention of Andrew Knowles at Shannonside Heritage Society.

The Lanesboro Tidy Towns lottery draw takes place every Tuesday morning in O’Brien’s at 10.30am. For the past number of months the jackpot has hit its upper limit of €15,000 and with nobody having the correct numbers that €15,000 there is still a chance that you can be the winner. The Joker continues to evade the cut
The Joker is on the rise once again and on Sunday night last 2nd August the Joker was, again, not cut from the deck of cards and another €100 will be added to the jackpot for next week. Book Launch
We are delighted to welcome Gerry Donlon (Moher) back to Lanesboro this Summer where he will launch his second anthology of stories. Tales of Bards Aloud, Comic & Quirky: Anthology 2 will be available in Lanesboro Library to purchase and to borrow. Gerry will be launching his book on August 20th from 6pm in the library. He will read a selection of stories which are all based in the local area. Everyone is welcome to celebrate local art.

Killashee & Clondra Parish History
The process of collating the historical records of Killashee and Clondra Parish has just begun and the first publication sees a very detailed account of the history of faith in the parish subtitled ‘A History of Faith ‘is now available.
The faith history and records of the parish is phenomenally detailed so much so that the list of the clergy that served both the Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic Church were comprehensively recorded to the extent that there is a record going back to 1411.
The communities of St. Paul’s Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic churches of St. Patrick’s (Killashee) and St. Brendan’s (Clondra) has and continues to play a major role in the parish for such a long time.
This book is launched to coincide with a momentous occasion that is presently happening in the parish where Fr. Shea Casey and Fr. Jimmie McDonnell are both celebrating the Golden Jubilee of their ordination into the priesthood.

“Seeking Safety” is a free coping skills program for women affected by trauma, mental health and/or addiction. Lanesboro Garda Station
Lanesboro Garda Station has just posted a notice telling of its opening times where the station will have a member of the force in attendance for the public. Lanesboro station will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 11am. The station will be open at those times unless the local Garda is dealing with a situation that requires their attendance.
Co. Longford Citizens Advice Centre
Co. Longford Citizens Information Service has recently been restructured and is currently under new management.
They continue to provide free, impartial, and confidential information, advice, and advocacy services to the public on social services, rights, and entitlements. The range of areas covered by the citizens information centre are extremely wide including social welfare rights and entitlements and other social issues such as employment, health services, housing, education, family matters and consumer rights, all where people need access to information.
The way people access the services changed during Covid and now they currently deal with a large number of queries over the telephone, however, they continue to provide our drop-in times and welcome people to their face-to-face service five mornings a week from the Longford office. The services are provided by experienced trained Information Officers who are there to help you.
The centre is located on level 1 within Longford Shopping Centre and direction can be obtained at the reception desk from Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 5.00pm. The office closes for lunch from 1pm until 2pm.
Gambling Anonymous
Meetings for those with problems with gambling take place in in the Family Centre, Longford (at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral) on Tuesdays at 8pm.
Support Group
Relatives and friends of anyone who has an alcoholic problem are welcome to attend meetings in the Family Centre at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral. The meetings take place every Tuesday evenings at 7pm.
ALONE
Support line for older people
ALONE manage a national support line and additional support for older people who have concerns or are still facing difficulties relating to Covid-19. Professional staff is available to answer queries and give advice and reassurance where necessary. The support line is open seven days a week from 8am until 8pm. Text TALK to 50808 to begin.

Roscommon University Hospital Injury Unit is available from 8am to 8pm seven days, a week and the contact number is 09066 32212.
Emergency Department deals with serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies if you need urgent medical help. They are open 24 hours a day and can be contacted by phoning 999 or 112.

Poor Clare Sisters: A day pilgrimage is being organised to visit the Poor Clare Sisters in Drumshambo on Thursday 13th August. The schedule is presently being put together and it will be published in next week’s notes.
Deferred: The scheduled church gate collection for St. Joseph’s Young Priest Society collection had to be deferred and it will now take place before Mass next weekend on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August.
Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confession time in the Prayer Room takes place on the first Friday of each month from 6.30pm to 7pm.The next opportunity is on this Friday 7th August.
Smart Recovery: Smart recovery is an evidence based addiction recovery group, where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour. Pioneer Mass: Everyone is invited to join in the special Pioneer Mass that will take place in Ballyleague Church on Friday next 7th August at 7pm. At the Mass members, both living and dead, will be remembered. If anyone would like to enrol, receive their silver or gold emblems, they should make contact with Brenda Reynolds (086) 8896969 to ensure that arrangements are finalised and presentations can take place at the Mass.
Cloontuskert Cemetery Mass: The annual Cloontuskert Cemetery Mass will take place on Sunday next 9th August at 6pm. A collection will take place on the evening with your contributions going towards the upkeep of the cemetery.
Kilgefin Cemetery Mass: On Sunday 16th August, Mass will take place in Kilgefin Cemetery at 6pm.A collection will take place with the proceeds going towards the upkeep of the cemetery.

Medjugorje Pilgrimage: The Medjugorje Pilgrimage will take place from the 21st – 28th October, from Knock €915 (Single Supplement €170). There is limited availability so early booking is advisable. Dioceses of Achonry And Elphin Pilgrimage To Lourdes –
Assisted Pilgrim Section: The Dioceses of Achonry and Elphin Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from 28th August – 2nd September inclusive, under the leadership of Bishop Kevin Doran. Pilgrimage highlights includes Mass at the Grotto, Torchlight and Blessed Sacrament Processions, Anointing of the Sick, Water Ceremony. Flights are ex Knock Airport. The Pilgrimage includes the Assisted Pilgrim Section. Those who travel as part of the Assisted Pilgrim Section will stay in Accueil Notre Dame, which is situated near the Grotto and Sanctuary area. They will be cared for by the Diocesan Pilgrimage Care Team whilst in Lourdes. Application forms for the Assisted Pilgrim Section and full details are available from Very Rev.
