St. Mary’s Secondary School Ballyleague

In the time of St. Mary’s Secondary School in Ballyleague there was the “Abbey Chronicle” published for a number of years during the school’s existence. The school was operational from 1958 to 1967. From the partial copy that I have seen I am of the opinion that the following information was from the 1966 edition. I want to thank Gerry Trautt who was given a copy of the details to pass on to me.

The teaching staff of the school that year was Mr Hannon, Mr O’Brien, Mr Murray, Rev. T. Foy and Rev. H. Tonra.

The curriculum in the school covered an amazing total of 17 subjects; Christian Doctrine, Irish, English, Latin, French, Mathematics, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Physiology and Hygiene, Agricultural Science, Woodwork, Drawing, Commerce and Civics. That was truly amazing with such a small number of teaching staff and it showed thee talent of the teaching staff to cove so many subjects.

In 1966 the students produced a pageant to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Easter Rising.

The student roll for that year is as follows: First (Roll) Year – S. Carbury, C. Carroll, B. Carty, K. Dalton, J. Donlon, P. Donnellan, A. Dooner, O. Dooner, D. Gibbons, M. O’Donnell, J. Ryder and P. Skelly.

Second Year – M. Best, P. Carberry, D. Fallon, F. Feeney, H. Greene, J. Harte, R. McCormack, M. McGann, and T. O’Leary.

Third Year – L. Cassidy, B. Connor, J. Farrell, L. Farrell, K. Harney, G. Healy, J. Healy, S. Lindsay, T. Murtagh, F. Regan and M. Sweeney.

Fourth Year – B. Dowd, P. Farrell, M. Fallon, P. Lindsay, G. Regan and T. Sweeney.

Fifth Year – P. Carroll, T. Connolly, G. Flanagan, J. Kilcline, H. O’Donnell, S. Sweeney, L. Rollins, T. Cullen and L. Gibbons.

The following were the results in the first year exhibition of 1965 were Painting – 1st T. O’Leary, 2nd M. McGann and 3rd J. Harte. Drawing – 1st D. Fallon, R. McCormack, P. Carberry, and H. Greene. Handcraft M. Best, Declan Connaughton, F. Feeney and H. Greene.

The following students finished their studies last year – Jude Murphy, Declan Connaughton, P. Dalton, P.J. Delaney and K. Flynn.

Naughton Foundation Award

The Naughton Foundation was established by Martin and Carmel Naughton in 1994. It is a private family foundation and its goal is to support worthwhile causes in the arts and education. In 2008 we decided to create the scholarship programme to increase our support for Leaving Certificate students who would like to study engineering, mathematics, science and technology at third level in Ireland.

Each year 36 students are awarded Naughton Scholarships. The scholarship is intended as a reward and encouragement to exceptional students who are studying in University in the STEM field.

Being one of the 1st boys in Ireland to achieve the Level 6 university-accredited STEM passport in 2025 to winning the SciFest award to winning the Regeneron Award (Technology) at the Stripe Young Scientist Exhibition 2026 and winning the Broadcom Foundation award at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona earlier this year Ronan Lyons was well celebrated for his great achievements. Ronan’s successes and his Leaving Cert results were again recognised when in recent days he was awarded one of the Naughton Foundation awards for 2026. This award by the late Martin, his wife Carmel Naughton and their Foundation will support Ronan to the tune of €6,000 a year for the duration of his 4 year Biomedical Engineering degree course in University College Galway.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy Olive and Sean Cox, their family, Bogwood, and their extended family on the death of Olive’s father Eugene Smyth, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath who passed away on Wednesday 7th October.

Exceptional Local Talent Honoured

Stretching to both ends of the life spectrum it was fantastic to see two former local Rathcline parishioners being acknowledged for their incredible talent in the discipline of Art at the inaugural Longford Arts Recognition Awards held recently in the Backstage Theatre. Remarkably, both men have worked with our bog heritage whilst making their massive impact in the world of Art.

Working from his workshop at Barley Harbour Michael Casey became instantly recognisable for his pioneering sculpturing and creations of Bog Oak. Michael’s work has been presented to world leaders and his work can be seen in the homes of the rich and famous all over the world. His creations have captivated many audiences for so many years. Michael is formerly of Main Street, son of the late Michael and Elizabeth and brother of Mary and John, and the late Brendan, Paddy, Betty and Philomena. Michael’s son Kevin is following in an equally impressive way at their studio and workshop at Barley Harbour, Newtowncashel that is well worth visiting.

Luke Casserly, son of Con and Yvonne Casserly, Clonfower, is a very talented young man that is already attracting worldwide audiences for his productions. Amazingly, one of Luke’s early works Distillation in 2023 brought his audience imaginations to the boglands of his native parish and the development of an organic perfume made using botanicals from the Irish bog. He has been recognised internationally through being chosen to participate in the International Berliner Theatertreffen in Germany, winning the Norman Houston Multidisciplinary Award with Solas Nua in Washington DC. Luke is currently Biodiversity Artist in Residence with Dublin City Council. He sees himself as multidisciplinary performance maker weaving together ecological research, autobiography, sound art, and site as a way of carving out space for new possibilities to emerge between live performance and physical landscape.
