Lanesboro Community College BT Young Scientist Projects will be on display in the Library from Monday 10th February for one week.
The projects are as follows; Perception of iPads in Irish Education
Are computer games the way forward for teaching maths? Can computers take the guess work out of gambling?
Why not come along and see the fine work these students have produced.
Weekfield National School – Past Pupils Re-Union
It is proposed to hold a re-union of past pupils of Weekfield National School later in the year. If anyone has old school photos, stories, etc. or any feedback the committee would be grateful to receive them. Tidy Towns litter survey
The first year students from Lanesboro Community College met members of the Ballyleague Tidy Towns committee on Monday last to begin the process of surveying three sites over the next six weeks. This will entail visiting and documenting each site on a weekly basis. The students will analyse and present the data gathered in a report. They will also begin planning and designing a survey which will be administered to people from the Ballyleague area. It’s a great opportunity for the students to get involved in their community and follows on the very successful project for the Tidy Towns committee last year which is on display at the old Slieve Bawn hotel. Cloontuskert N.S. Enrolment
Enrolment of new entrants for September 2014 will take place on Thursday, February 13th from 6.30pm – 7.30pm. Please come along with your child and bring a copy of your child’s birth cert. St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Monday 17th March, St. Patrick’s Day, is approaching rapidly and there is much work to be done in preparation of floats for what is one of the finest parades in the country.
The uniqueness of our parade beginning I n a different parish, county, parish, province and diocese is something that makes our parade inimitable amongst all other parades.
This year we are hoping that every club committee institution, business and individuals with their own uniqueness and creativity will make the 2014 parade bigger and more colourful than any other year.
There is a big invite to everyone that has any association to the parish of Kilgefin/ Ballyleague and Rathcline/Lanesboro to come along to the parade. Our community has something very special and the parade route should be full to capacity to celebrate out patron saint’s day along with a wonderful community celebration.
Lourdes Church Collection
As this collection is a diocesan collection, an instruction has come that the collection next weekend will take up in the church. In consultation with Fr. Mickey it was decided that the collection will take place in the church porch.
The annual Lourdes Pilgrimage collection will take place at all masses Saturday next 15th and Sunday 16th February. The collection diocese-wide is taken up each year to bring those people who have suffered or are suffering illness to Lourdes. You have been extremely generous every year even during these trying times and the committee hopes you will again be very generous.
Enrolment in Lanesborough Primary School
Lanesborough Primary School is holding an enrolment afternoon on Friday next February 14th from 1pm. This is an opportunity for parents, girls and boys for Junior Infants 2014 to meet with the principal Claire Murphy and other staff members, and to enrol for September 2014.It is also an opportunity to find out what goes on in Lanesborough Primary School.
Fair Day
With just three weeks to go to the annual re-enactment of Lanesboro Fair Day the committee is a hive of activity in preparing the full schedule for the day and to ensure a smooth running of what is always a very special day in our town.
If you have not made it back yet for the ‘Fair’ then make Saturday 1st March a date to be in Lanesboro.
The ‘Fair’ this year returns to the street from the church right back down to the corner. We again look forward to that area filled to capacity with horses, ponies, foals, donkeys and many other animals and side shows that annually makes this day a very special day and brings back memories of the Lanesboro Fair of old. The sight of the wheeling and dealing is a sight to behold and the distinctiveness has to be seen to be believed. The ‘Fair’ rolls back the years and memories for many people of an age that remembers all the fairs throughout the area. It is also a wonderful experience for the younger people to see what a traditional fair day was like and all the events surrounding it.
Part of the day’s events is the Dog show and the enthusiastic members in charge of the Dog Show are presently busy completing the arrangements. It is now time to be grooming and training your dog for what is always a very popular sideshow at Lanesboro Fair.
Pilgrimage to Lourdes
The annual Ardagh and Clonmacnois Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place this year from Tuesday 27th May to Sunday 1st June and the pilgrimage director is Monsignor Bernard Noonan, Moate and his phone number is 090 64 81180. Rev. Michael Scanlon will take charge of the special section for the sick and his phone number is 090 64 57122. Places are available on the pilgrimage and they can be booked with Joe walsh Tours, Dublin phone 01 2410812.
Fermoyle N.S. Enrolment
Enrolment for the academic year 2014/2015 at Fermoyle mixed National School will take place in the school on Wednesday 19th February between 2.00pm and 3.00pm.

Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs Bernadette Clancy, Rathcline Road, and family on the death of Fr. Seán Tynan on Wednesday last 5th February at Laurel Lodge Nursing Home Longford.
Shannon Gaels
The attendance of parents registering their children to play football with the Shannon Gaels club this year was very poor on Friday night last. Parents are asked to remember that the registration covers your young children to play football with the club and they cannot train or play football until this registration is paid. The club would appreciate prompt payment as the registration has to go through the process until it is logged in at Croke Park.
Everyone home and away should make Saturday 12th April to be back in the parish for what promises to be a very special evening in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. There is a lot of work going into the preparation of the evening events and it will be great to welcome everyone to the hall on the night.
The club once again encourages all parents to come along and play their part in the club. We have many and varied activities for both your sons and daughters going on in the club. Your kids are a pleasure to be with in all of those activities but as we expand we seek the help of both parents and supporters that can give some of their time to the promotion of the young people within our club. We are rightly proud of the efforts of all our players but equally so with our Scór groups in all categories, our choir and also our youngsters who go on stage for us. We hope that you can come along and play your part in the club and help us develop the club and activities further. Please contact our senior executive members Sean Kenny, Seadna Ryan or Brendan Keane and they will welcome you to our and your active club.
Congratulations to Shane Kenny and his team mates, manager Gareth Johnston and his team management on a great win in the minor league over Tipperary on Sunday last.
Herbal Remedies
Staying with matters environmental Laneswould like to thank all those people who have participated so far in our biodiversity study for the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Award project. What a group of 4th year students from the Community College are doing is to gather information about the healing properties of our local plants. This is lore that is being lost and these young people are trying to save it for the next generation. St. Mary’s Parish Hall committee would like to say a big thank you to everyone that contributed to their recent church gate collecting. The sum collected was €560. The collection will go to the upkeep of the hall.
Rathcline GAA Lotto
The lotto numbers drawn on Saturday night last were 7, 11, 16, 17, 36 and 44. There was nobody with four of these numbers and jackpot of €300 was not won. The four winners of the €25 prizes were Donal Brady, Carrickboy, Longford, Shane Carroll, Leixlip, Tom Mulvihill, Cullentra, Michael Shanley, Killashee. The jackpot for Saturday night next will now rise to €400.
Clothes Collection
If you have old clothes and bed linen that you no longer require you can give them to the Rathcline Ladies club who are presently doing a clothes collection. You can drop them off with Mike Greene on the Green or contact Mike or Madaleine Murray to arrange collection
Credit Union Quiz
Lanesboro Ballyleague Annual Primary School quiz was held in St Mary’s Hall, Ballyleague on Sunday 2 February 2014. A total of 26 teams took part from all the National Schools in the locality. A large number of supporters also attended. Quiz master was Donal Casey, Chairman Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union and score keeper was Mark Casey, MCC, Director Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union.
The winners in competition A, i.e. under 11 years were: Lanesboro National School represented by: Cormac Casey, Jack Madigan, Orla Lyons and Louise Costello.
Runners up were Newtowncashel represented by: Joseph Kenny, Emma Casey, Conor Scally and Eabhan Slattery.
Winners in competition B, i.e. under 13 years were: Roxboro NS represented by: Keelan Gallagher, Joey O’Malley, Joe Finnegan and Ruairí O’Connor.
Runners up were Roxboro represented by: Jamie Finnegan, Isobel Ryan, Saoirse Murray and Tom Ryan.
The winners in each competition were presented with cash prizes, and now go on to represent Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union at Chapter level and this competition takes place on Friday 28 February in Moate Community Centre at 8.00p.m.

Three children’s jackets were found in Ballyleague Hall following the recent Credit Union Schools Quiz. The owners may collect them by calling into the Credit Union.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Sean, Michael and Geraldine Murray, late of Thureen, on the death of their aunt Mamie Meleady, who died and was buried in Clonbonny cemetery following her Funeral Mass on Tuesday last 4th February. Mamie was sister of the late Mike Murray, Thureen and spent most of her life living in Cheshire, England.

Sympathy
The death took place in London of Brendan Casey, formerly Main Street. Brendan left Lanesboro for England in 1953. He is survived by his wife Bridie, and children Michael, Mark, Stephen and Caroline to whom we extend our sincere sympathy. Brendan was predeceased by his sister Betty. We would also like to extend our deepest sympathy to his brothers and sisters John and Mary Casey and family, Gurteengar, Philomena, Michael, Paddy and Mary. Brendan’s remains were laid to rest in London on Tuesday 11th February.
Ballagh N.S. Enrolment
Ballagh National School is holding an Enrolment day on Wednesday, 19th February from 2-3pm. We invite you to come along with your child to view the school and its facilities and meet the teachers. Death of Longford Legend
Last Tuesday 4th February was a sad day for the Donlon family, Derryhaun, and for the entire county when the death was announced of John Donlon. John was a living legend and his passing will resonate worldwide with every Longford person.
John played in a pivotal role in the wonderful Longford teams of the 60’s and was a National League medal winner and Leinster championship winner – both history making teams. Those of us that remember those heady days for Longford football will remember John’s immense contribution.
John worked with Bord na Mona, was a county councillor and also managed the Longford county team. He was always a pleasant man who never spoke ill of anyone and indeed never allowed anyone else to speak ill of anyone. He was a character with wonderful stories to tell of his times and the related stories of his lifetime. During his time on the successful Longford panel John was a team mate of our local parish priest Fr Mickey Reilly, Seamus Flynn and Brendan Gilmore. John was a great friend of our parish and we join with his relatives in the parish, his wife Maureen, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and the wider Longford GAA community in mourning his death.
John was laid to rest in Moydow cemetery on Friday last.
Rathcline Ladies
The club will hold its registration night on this coming Saturday afternoon15th February in the clubhouse. Registration takes place between 3 and 5pm. The cost of registration is U 12 to minor level is €35, and senior ladies €50.
Training for home senior ladies every Wednesday at 7pm and for all seniors on Sunday mornings at 11.30am.
The club extends its deepest sympathy to the Donlon family Derryhaun on the death of John Donlon.
Ronan Mc Cormack Rosactive Weekend
Last year was the first year remembering the passing of Ronan Mc Cormack Charity Challenge with a variety of events to raise money for a number of charities. The response was thoroughly phenomenal and the event will again take place this year on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March.
Ronan was a local lad, a larger than life character with a great attitude to life and his passing deprived us all of many happy days in his company. This is a wonderful way to acknowledge and celebrate his life and we should all support in whatever way we can be involved during the weekend. The entire weekend is in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation and Roscommon Special Olympics.
Saturday will commence with the 100km cycle from Roscommon to Mountbellew and back again to Roscommon. Alternatively you can cycle the 100km from Carnmore in County Galway to Mountbellew and back again to Carnmore. The cyclist will meet up in Mountbellew before returning to their original starting point. To register for the cycle it is €30 the 5km is €15 or the cycle and 5km €40.
On Saturday night there will be a Social Nigh t in Foxe’s bar which will include a Dart competition – the fund of which will go to Special Olympics Roscommon.
On Sunday 2nd the day’s events will commence at 10am with Invacare Series Elite Paracycycle Criterium featuring Ireland’s Elite Paracyclists – sign in 8.45 to 9.30am.
At 11am “Taking the Dis” a 2km Push, Cycle or Roll to showcase the talents of people with different abilities – sign in from 9 to 10am.
12 noon will see the commencement of the 5km Sub 30 Run – a close circuit road race – sign in 10 to 11.30am.
At 12.30 5km Lappers Challenge a Fun Run or Push around the streets of Roscommon Town – sign in from 10.30 to 12noon.
The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley
The Acorn players present ‘The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley’ in Ballyleague Hall on this coming Sunday night 16th February. This 3 act play will have you rolling in your seat with laughter such is its hilarity. This is a play not to be missed as it will lift your spirits for days and week to come. Admission is €10 and for .children €5.
Rathcline GAA
Rathcline GFC would like to pass on our condolences to the Donlon family on the passing of Cashel and Longford great John Donlon. A well-known face in the parish, he will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
Intermediate player registration is due. It’s a necessity for all players to pay the fee. Registration money can be brought to training on a Friday night or given to any member of the executive committee.
The brains of all club members both young and old can be tested at the Rathcline Table quiz in the Peer on Friday the 21st of February. A night of high tension is guaranteed and is not to be missed!

Minor Club
There was a small turn out for club membership for the Minor club. It’s important for parents of children that want to get involved in GAA that they register. The club has great facilities and coaches from U 6’s all the way up to Minor level. The registration night will be rescheduled at a later date.
Congratulations to Gareth Johnston and our local players who were involved in the county minor team who defeated Tipperary. Keep up the good work.
Rathcline Ladies
The clubs registration night takes place on the 15th of February in the club house. U 12 to minor level is 35 euro, and senior ladies fee is 50 euro.
After pre-season training in the Peer at the dinner dance, the real stuff has started out on the training pitch, a big year ahead for our ladies, so if you’re interested please contact Mike or Madeline for training times.
Well done to the Co Longford ladies and our players who defeated Sligo on a score line of 5-6 to 1-11 in Killoe on Sunday.
Just a reminder again that the clothes collection continues for the club. If you have any unwanted clothes, Mike and Madeline will find them a good home, nothing like a spring clean!
St. Faithleach’s GAA
Membership/Registration: St. Faithleachs GAA Minor club Registration Night takes place in the clubhouse this coming Wednesday 12th February from 8.00-10.00pm. Adult Registration Night takes place in the clubhouse this coming Friday 14th February from 9.00-10.00pm. Membership/Registration forms will be available to local schools during the week. Adult players €60, Under18 players and students €30, family membership €100, social membership €30. Please note, registration fee must be paid before players can train or compete for the club.
GAA National Club Draw: Your support for St. Faithleachs GAA Club in the National GAA Club Draw would be greatly appreciated.
