Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 24th March 2014

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Time Changes on Saturday night

You are reminded that on Saturday night next 30th March we will see the end of winter time and the arrival of summer time. It will be time to put your clocks forward one hour and look forward to extended daylight days. Let us hope with the arrival of summer time we will get more clement weather and another long hot summer.

Further awards for Diarmuid

Many congratulations to Diarmuid Murtagh who earlier this week was name on the Irish Daily Mail “Future Champions” (Third-level) Team 2014. This is similar to the All Stars awards and his selection is all the more remarkable by the fact that he was selected ahead of his team mate and All Ireland winner Ciarán Kilkenny, Dublin, and also by the fact that his college St. Patrick’s Drumcondra was not playing in the Sigerson Cup. It is a marvellous achievement and one I am sure his parents Andy and Breda brothers Brian and Ciaran are rightly proud of and we all share in our pride of one of our own gaining so much success and acclaim.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrated in Style

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade despite the best efforts of the weather to spoil the day was the best one ever. The morning and early afternoon was overcast with some intermittent drizzle and we thought that the day might be spoiled if more rain or drizzle came but fortunately the rest of the day remained overcast and dry.

From early morning, as it the tradition, our local butcher Terry Mc Loughlin, had a pig cooking on a spit and the sweet aroma circulating around the area. At 11.30am mass Fr Mickie celebrated the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Mass to launch the day’s activities. From 1.30pm as the crowds began to gather they were entertained by wonderful tradition music by Johnny Duffy, Jimmy Flanagan, Joe Mc Grath and Teresa Costello. The crowds grew larger and larger and it was estimated that there was at least 5000 people on the streets of Lanesboro and Ballyleague to greet the parade as it stared to weave its way onto the main Road from St. Faithleach’s GAA pitch. 40 floats, each one better than the next, made its way through Ballyleague towards the viewing stand on Main Street where the inimitable Eugene Murphy did MC in a very efficient manner. On the view stand was Canon Liz mc Elhenny, Fr. J. Mc Manus, PP, Fr. M. Reilly, PP, Cllr Mick Cahill, Cllr Sean Farrell, Cllr Colm Murray, Cllr Larry Bannon, Cllr Mark Casey and Larry Brennan.

The St. Patrick ’s Day Parade in Lanesboro is gaining a greater reputation as each year passes and it was fitting that the RTÉ cameras should be in Lanesboro to cover the parade especially with  records being set for the number of floats and also a record attendance of over 5000 people. The comment about the standard of floats was very pleasing to hear and it is a great credit to everyone involved in the 40 floats entered that they should go to such efforts to make their float and our parade unique.

The winners of the prizes for best floats went to Overall – Ming Flanagan and the Whistleblowers, Most Original – Ballyboro Scouts, runners up – The Men’s Shed, Best Junior – Newtowncashel NS, Best Club – Lanesboro Triathlon Club, Best Vintage – Clarkes Bar, Best Business – Gerry Shanley, Carpentry, Best Window – Costello’s Nursing Home, runner up – Terry mc Loughlin,  Butcher Main St.

The draw to help towards the running of the Parade was a huge success and the lucky winners were; 1st €300 Joe Mc Grath, 2nd John James O’Reilly, 3rd €100 Tim O’Connor, 4th €100 Conor Boland, 5th €100 Sarah Jane Lane, 6th €100 Patricia mc Gann and 7th €100 Aidan Carley.

We would like to say a huge thank you and congratulate the organising committee for producing such a wonderful occasion for the 5000 plus that came to Lanesboro and Ballyleague for the parade. We would also like to congratulate each and every float and thank them for making the parade so vibrant and colorful. There were many people gave of their time to help out the committee and we would like to once again say a huge thank you to the volunteers of Lanesboro and Ballyleague for the giving of their time – it meant so much to so many.

Historical Reenactment

It is proposed to have historical reenactment of a 19th century event that occurred in Lanesboro involving Parnell. The idea has recently been mooted and if there is an interest then the proposers are hoping that a great day can be held in Lanesboro with this reenactment. This is an all-encompassing event involving both sides of the bridge and to hear the history of the 19th century event alone is hugely interesting.

If you are interested in getting involved in the discussion group you are asked to give your name into Martina or Joe O’Brien in the shop and they will pass on all the names. You can call in or phone 3321107 or email joea@iol.ie

Céilí in St Mary’s Hall

The invitation to ‘step it out’ in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro is extended to everyone that enjoys a great night out at a Céilí. It has been a time since there has been a céilí in the hall and it evokes great memories of the wonderful nights at céilí’s in the hall.

Searching for lost fisherman

We have all been waiting for the past number of day for some good news on the search for the missing fisherman’s body on Lough Ree. From a boat of three two have been recovered but unfortunately one of the rescued men died the following day.

Lough Ree  Sub Aqua club have put themselves at the disposal of the RNLI lifeboat who are co-ordinating the search and right up to the time of writing our local lads and girls have been diving in a search and rescue mission.

It is gratifying to see our local sub aqua club working hard and making themselves available to a family in need as they continue to search. We hope that the trauma that this family is suffering will soon come to an end with the recovery of the missing body and we congratulate and acknowledge the great work being done by the dedicated people of the Lough Ree Sub Aqua club.

The team was led by captain, Seadhna Ryan, with Briain Casey in goals, backline Jakub Kajan, Óisín Mc Gowan and Mechal McCarthy. Midfield comprised of Michal Kajan and Seadhna Ryan, the forwards were Cormac Casey, Cillian Cox and Duileach Ryan. Music will be provided by the very popular and local musician Jimmy Hussey. Come along for dancing, singing, music and lots of fun and a most enjoyable evening.

Death

We were all shocked and saddened to hear the sad news of one of our local residents at Mullingar Hospital on Sunday 16th March of Brian Tucker, Lehery. Brian along with his late wife Mary moved from England to Ballyleague – Mary’s home parish. They bought the filling station on the outskirts of Ballyleague where they ran a very successful business until their retirement. The Tucker family became very popular in the wider area and it was always a pleasure to deal with Brian, his wife Mary and family. Brian was a very personable man who loved to stand and chat and was always interested in the affair of the locality. He had a great interest in sport and none more so than equine sport. Following his move to Lehery he bred and reared many horses with great success and was always seen tending to his animals as one passed the road. His passing leaves many empty hearts and minds and he will be sadly missed by everyone that came to know him.

To his son Martin, daughters Claire and Lorraine, brother, Philip, sister, Hazel, relatives and many many friends we would like to extend our sincere sympathy. Brian has donated his body to medical science at Trinity College. Coincidently Trinity College is where his grandson Gavin is studying to become a doctor.

Camera Lost

During the after wedding celebrations of Kevin Hanley and Fiona Egan on Monday last St. Patrick’s Day in Adie Farrell’s Fiona mislaid her Samsung Red Digital camera. If you happen to come across it or even know where it is, can you contact Fiona or Kevin or leave it into Adie’s or O’Brien’s. It is particularly valuable as it has the first photographs of their newly born twins and also from the wedding day itself.

Sunday Opening

The Friends of Asthma Charity shop from Sunday next 30th March will open their furniture department on the last Sunday of every month from 12 noon to 4pm including Bank Holidays. Come along and see what may there for you or if you have any furniture donation you can also make it during opening hours each day.

Rathcline GAA

Our first league game took place against Legan, in Clonbonny on Saturday evening. The team got a deserved win on a score line of 1- 17 to 6 pts. The first half was a tight affair, with scoring at a minimum; both teams had chances but didn’t take them. The half time score was 5 pts. to 2 in favour of Rathcline. The team settled into a better rhythm in the second half and dictated the pace of the game. With good runs coming from defence and midfield, Rathcline found space and took several scores very well. Colin Fayne scored the only goal of the game half way through the second half. It was a decent team performance and can be built on in both this league and the reserve league. Legan will no doubt improve, but Rathcline will take heart from a strong 2nd half performance. Training continues midweek. Thanks to all who had the pitch looking immaculate and to everyone who helped out on the day.

A reminder to everyone, that the Croagh Patrick climb is taking place very soon. Anyone whom is interested should contact a member of the executive for details.
