Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Historical Reenactment

It is proposed to have historical reenactment of a 19th century event that occurred in Lanesboro involving Parnell. The idea has recently been mooted and if there is an interest then the proposers are hoping that a great day can be held in Lanesboro with this reenactment. This is an all-encompassing event involving both sides of the bridge and to hear the history of the 19th century event alone is hugely interesting.

If you are interested in getting involved in the discussion group you are asked to give your name into Martina or Joe O’Brien in the shop and they will pass on all the names. You can call in or phone 3321107 or email joea@iol.ie

Birth

Congratulations to Ray Donlon, Church View and Leanne Mc Dermott, Strokestown on the birth last week of a baby boy.

Destruction

It is hard to fathom out the minds of people when they embark on a series of destruction. Along the banks of the Shannon as you walk on the path from the bridge you come to a marble seating erected in 2008 by Shannonside Heritage group and Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op in memory of the 35 that were drowned in a boating accident as they made their way to the Fair Day in Lanesboro in 1701 and also to the memory of all those that have lost their lives in the River Shannon in the area.

The seating was always used by those – both young and old – walking along the river bank. It was a popular meeting and chatting area and as you would pass there was always great hilarity when the young people congregated there.

Some people in their wrong minds on the weekend, (Friday 21st –Sunday 23rd March), decided to smash up the seating and the table top and do a huge amount of damage.

This is not in any way acceptable within any community, not alone ours, and if anyone knows anything at all about this vandalism can the contact the local Gardaí. Please let us try and rid this kind of thuggery and mindless behaviour from our community. It cannot and should not ever be accepted that this behaviour ever goes on in our community. Let us ensure that the rigors of the law are brought to bear on those thugs. No stone should be left unturned to identify the thugs that did this damaged and spoiled so much for so many people.

Foróige returns

For a long time Foróige was a very active club in our community and for some reason it was allowed to lapse. There is a recognition that the young people of Lanesboro and Ballyleague deserve to have an active club in their community. For that reason an information evening will take place in Lanesboro Community College on Friday 11th April at 8pm with the view to setting up Lanesboro/Ballyleague Foróige Club.

The organisers invite all parents of young people 12 – 18 years and potential adults volunteers interested in setting up of a Foróige Club are welcome to attend and support this meeting.

Foróige Clubs offer young people the opportunity to run the club themselves in cooperation with their adult volunteers, learn new things, make friends and have a great time along the way.

To find out more about Foróige you can log into their website www.foroige.ie alternatively you can contact Megan Depinna Regional Youth Officer on 086 2566480 or by email at megan.depinna@foroige.ie for more information.”
